Education is synonymous within the Born in Africa (BIA) programme, however

out of programme is not limited to only education. This is clear in our mission
statement as depicted below, however, I would like to bring home just what
we mean by “well rounded, independent and successful young adults”. The
children in our programme grow up with very limited exposure which is vital
for character development. Their entire existence is predominantly based
upon what they see and experience day in and day out in the township they
grow up in. It consists of their school where their classrooms are over full, to
having very limited afternoon stimulation and to going home and having to
either take care of their siblings or clean the home before their parents get
home from work. In most cases, they go home to unemployed parents where
a daily dinner is a struggle with Mom scrounging around the neighbourhood
looking to put food on the table that evening. This all becomes NORMAL for
them and so they too will follow in their parents footsteps if there is no inter-
vention and this is where Born in Africa comes into play.
With the mentoring programme continuously boosting their confidence and the holiday outings, Born in Africa
camps and other activities we expose them to, they open their minds to a whole new world and a new positive
existence which waits upon them. We teach them to knock on that door and their bright future will unfold…
Read further on Page 3 about our life changing activities.

Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role
models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and
young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay South Africa.
BIA Tertiary Programme
What a fantastic programme with positive results! The programme was established in 2010 and it
provides study bursaries to qualifying students. This year we have 26 students studying at tertiary level.
A strict selection criteria is in place to ensure we keep our level of excellence and the students also
undergo extensive career guidance beforehand. The fields of study vary widely and include human
resource management, marketing, physiotherapy, teaching, law, business administration, early
childhood development, electrical engineering and safety in society jus to name a few. We expect an
additional 11 students to join the programme from 2016.

in which to host computer lessons. Born in Africa has
