Introdução
Atribuir estados mentais é talvez uma das formas mais complexas de raciocínio
que envolve seres humanos (Kana et.al., 2009). A Teoria da Mente é referida
como a capacidade de atribuir estados mentais como crenças, desejos,
conhecimentos e pensamentos a outras pessoas e predizer ou explicar o
comportamento das mesmas em função destas atribuições (Baron-Cohen et.
al.,1985). Crianças com desenvolvimento típico geralmente mostram evidências
da Teoria da Mente em torno de quatro anos de idade quando começam a
compreender as perspectivas de outras pessoas (Molnar-Szakacs et. al., 2009). O
prejuízo na Teoria da Mente no autismo muitas vezes resulta em dificuldades de
comunicação e interação que sustentam a vida cotidiana, apresentando um
pobre desenvolvimento social, imaginário e comunicativo (Kana et.al.,
2009). Déficits sociais específicos entre os indivíduos com transtorno autista
geralmente incluem dificuldades em expressar emoções, compreender as
emoções dos outros e empatia, bem como a incapacidade de interpretar os sinais
sociais, avaliar a formalidade de eventos sociais, e agir em conformidade. A
incapacidade de entender as expressões emocionais dos outros e responder
apropriadamente impede o desenvolvimento de relações interpessoais
significativas, colocando-os em risco de rejeição social (Frith, 2004; Baron-
Cohen, 1995). A imaginação é relevante para a teoria da mente, uma vez que
envolve a construção e a compreensão de um mundo irreal. Um estudo de
crianças com autismo investigou a capacidade de desenhar objetos irreais ou
impossíveis (como uma pessoa com duas cabeças), e descobriu que crianças com
autismo ou eram relutantes ou menos capazes de produzir tais desenhos. No
entanto, há evidência de persistentes deficiências na imaginação em crianças
com autismo em uma série de tarefas não restritas ao desenho, como contar
histórias, e medidas de criatividade padrão (Baron-Cohen, 1995). Décadas de
pesquisa em musicoterapia têm indicado que a música facilita e apóia o desejo
de crianças autistas de se comunicar. Algumas das áreas de melhoria verificadas
incluem: aumento adequado dos comportamentos sociais, estereotipia, aumento
de verbalizações, gestos e compreensão, e aumento dos atos comunicativos e
engajamento com os outros, entre outros efeitos positivos (Wigram; Gold,
2006; Molnar-Szakacs et. al., 2009 ).
