EXCURSION INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Piney Lakes Nature Reserve

Winthrop, Western Australia

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The following details relate to a very exciting educational excursion to Piney Lakes Nature Reserve which is
being organised for the Year Fours.

As a part of the Science curriculum in Year Four, students have been learning about living things and the
environment; and in Design and Technology students have been learning about how products and
environments are designed to meet community needs.
Students have also been learning about the importance of natural resources and environments and different
ways in which they can be protected. It will be an invaluable experience for students to explore the nature
reserve and enrich their learning of the environment and our role in protecting it. The students will be guided
through two fantastic education programs provided by Piney Lakes Nature Reserve: Plantastic and Go Green.

This term students have also been learning about the importance of sustainability. On the Plantastic guided
walk, students will learn about the native and introduced flora of the region and the guide will explain the
critical role plants play within the Piney Lakes ecosystem. The Go Green tour of the Piney Lakes
Environmental Education Centre will teach students about sustainable building design, waste resource
management and ways in which we can minimise our carbon footprint.

Itinerary

On Wednesday 19th September, we will depart from our classroom at 9.50am to walk as a class to Piney
Lakes Nature Reserve (see map below). First, we will take part in a guided walk as part of the Plantastic
program, with a tour guide from Piney Lakes Nature Reserve. Students will then have their morning tea before
we begin our next program; Go Green at the Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre. After, students
will have their lunch and will be given the opportunity to play on the Piney Lakes Sensory playground and
explore the nearby grounds of the reserve. Finally, we will return to school at 2pm along the same route.
Students should arrive and leave school at the normal bell times.

be run; as well as to give you some background information on how to assist students with their
exploration and learning on the excursion. If you would like to join us as a parent-helper, and you are
able to attend the above stipulated time, please indicate your interest on the attached permission slip

The teacher in charge will have the school mobile phone. In case of emergency, ring the school office on

Staff accompanying students on the excursions will take all reasonable care while the students are in their

appropriate medications for individual children will be kept on hand by a teacher at all times. However,
if an incident is to occur, we will contact you on the phone number you provide on the permission slip
below.

Parents should be aware that staff members are not responsible for injuries or damage to property which
may occur on an excursion where, in all circumstances, staff have not been negligent. Parents should
warn children of the risk to themselves, to others and to property, of wilful or disobedient behaviour.

1. Home packed recess and lunch. Please pack your child’s recess and lunch in separate disposable
bags labelled with their name on each bag.
2. Water bottle labelled with name.

attached permission slip and ensure you hand this to your child’s teacher on the morning of the

5. Attendance on this excursion will depend on the students’ displaying appropriate behaviour at school
and maintaining ‘good standing’ status.
6. Students are expected to be respectful and engaged on this excursion. If a student’s misbehaviour is
deemed unacceptable after three warnings, this student’s parents will be called to negotiate parent
