Why do men want flashy cars and designer clothes?

expensive watches, and other
luxury items may have deep roots
in chemistry. A study of 243 men
between the ages of 18 and 55
found that those who got a dose of
the male sex hormone
testosterone responded with an
increased preference for status-
signalling goods.
The results, published in Nature
Communications, add a biological
dimension to the psychology of
conspicuous consumption, or
using flashy, expensive material
goods to broadcast social status.
Intriguingly, they also suggest that
showing off high-status goods is
the human equivalent

certain male animals,
such as the peacock's

different types of goods.
In the first task, researchers
presented the participants with
five pairs of apparel brands that
pre-testing had found to be
associated with different levels of
social status—Calvin Klein jeans
represented higher status, for

substantively different in terms of
quality, to avoid that variable
influencing the results. The men
who got the dose of testosterone,
they found, showed a greater
preference for the high-status
brands.
Next, they showed the men a
series of ads for products such as
a car, sunglasses, or a coffee
machine. The ads were identical
except for using different
phrases—also pre-tested—that
either associated the item with
status, quality, or power and
dominance. Men who received the
testosterone showed more
positive feelings toward products
framed as magnifying status than
the placebo group. But the
testosterone group showed no
increased preference for items
marketed as being high quality or
those described as increasing
power. (The goal was to separate
out an attraction to status from
those other features, specifically
power, since the two are closely
linked in the animal world but not
necessarily so among humans.)
“The findings need to be
replicated, but we used a sample
size that is four or five times larger
than what has been used before,
so we have more evidence than
we've ever had that testosterone is
affecting these preferences,”

sellout contrasts with
the 19,211 crowd for
last Friday night's
semi-final between
Cronulla and Penrith
at the same venue.
That match left many
asking after the
Sharks gripping 21-
20- win why there
hadn't more fans in
attendance.
The match was one of
three 2018 finals
games decided by a
field goal – equalling
the record for one point results from
the 2014 finals and bettering the 1946,
1948, 1969, 1978, 1994 and 2015
play-offs, which each had two
matches with one point margins.
However, the attendance was the
second lowest for a finals match
between two Sydney teams since the
NRL scrapped the policy of allowing
teams hosting play-offs at suburban
venues in 2011, with only last year's
Manly-Penrith clash at Allianz
Stadium (15,408) drawing a smaller
crowd.
The fact that the Sea Eagles,
Panthers and Sharks also dominate
the list of lowest crowd figures for
finals matches at Allianz Stadium and
ANZ Stadium against non-Sydney
teams highlights the challenges faced
by clubs on the edges of Australia's
largest city.
Cronulla and Penrith are Sydney's
newest stand-alone clubs - having

been admitted to the competition in
1967 - and many fans who live in
those areas grew up supporting more
established teams favoured by their
families, or have moved there and
taken their allegiances with them.
Ticketing and membership data
suggests the Rabbitohs are one of the
best-supported clubs – if not No.1 - in
western Sydney, while St George
Illawarra also have a broadly-spread
fan base.
This was backed up by the results of
NRL.com's recent fan poll, in which
respondents were asked to nominate
the club they supported and the
Rabbitohs, Dragons and Roosters
finished behind only Brisbane and the
Warriors.
An NRL supporter ladder compiled by
Roy Morgan Research Institute and
published last weekend ranked
Brisbane No.1, ahead of Melbourne,
North Queensland, Wests Tigers,
Parramatta, Souths, Canterbury and
the Dragons.
The Broncos are also Australia's most
watched sporting team, with Fairfax
Media reporting last week that the
club attracted a cumulative audience
of more than 18 million for their regular
season matches this year.
The Cowboys were the NRL's second
most-watched team, with a
cumulative audience of almost 15
million, while the Roosters (14.3m)
were No.1 among Sydney's nine
clubs.
The absence of a Queensland team in
the last six sides in the play-offs
explains a decline in television ratings
as viewer numbers in Brisbane were
down 45 per cent last weekend
compared to the 2017 semi-finals.

largest growth.
Penrith's average home attendances
of 14,196 were the club's best since
2004 when they attracted average
crowds of 17,263 on the back of the
previous year's premiership success
but they have been relatively steady
for the past decade.
Cronulla's average home attendance
of 12,700 was down on their 14,579
average in 2016, when the Sharks
won their first title, but is also in
keeping with crowd figures at
Southern Cross Group
Stadium since 2009.
While the Panthers
bought 19 busloads of
supporters to Allianz
Stadium last Friday
night, it was hardly a
surprise that two clubs
with a combined
average attendances
of 27,181 drew a crowd
of less than 20,000 as
fans of both teams
needed to travel
across Sydney in peak
hour traffic.
Some fans from
Penrith said the trip to Moore Park had
taken two hours.
While some argue that a return to the
NRL's pre-2011 policy of allowing
Sydney clubs to host some play-off
matches at their home grounds would
look better on television, the reality is
that no finals game played at a
suburban venue between 1998 and
2010 ever drew a crowd of 20,000.
However, the opening of the new
Western Sydney Stadium next
season is expected to provide the
NRL with an ideal venue for hosting
finals matches such as last Friday
night's Sharks-Panthers clash or
games featuring out-of-town teams.
Wests Tigers have announced that
they will play four home matches at
the 30,000 seat stadium in Parramatta
from next season and other clubs are
expected to follow suit.

DUSTIN Martin is
struggling with a
“significant” knee issue,
according to two-time
North Melbourne premiership
player David King.
Martin failed to train with the main
group on Monday after leaving the
track early on Friday with what
teammate Daniel Rioli described
as a corky, before footy boss Neil
Balme provided more context.
“There is nothing wrong with him.
Trained exactly as we planned,”
Balme told The Herald Sun.
“They're all on their own
programs. If they train together, it's
more of a coincidence than
anything else.”

Martin has played 22 of
Richmond's 23 matches this year,
averaging 25.7 disposals per

A TACTICAL blunder by Ferrari
has helped Lewis Hamilton firm his
grip on a fifth world championship
by winning the Singapore Grand
Prix on Sunday night.
A showdown between Hamilton
and his nearest title rival
Sebastian Vettel loomed as the
Ferrari driver jumped Red Bull's
Max Verstappen on the opening
lap.
But an early pit stop on Lap 14 – an
attempt to undercut the
Mercedes – backfired as
Vettel lost ground to
Hamilton, and then
position to Verstappen
three laps later.
Vettel also fitted the less
durable tyre, meaning he
couldn't launch a late
assault on the top two
positions, which
H a m i l t o n a n d
Verstappen held.
Hamilton now has almost
two races in hand over
Vettel after extending his
championship lead to 40
points.
Daniel Ricciardo enjoyed several
laps in the lead, as he ran the
longest out of the front runners
during his opening stint. He
ultimately couldn't improve on his
grid position of sixth.
Hamilton was elated over team
radio after the race, telling his
garage: “We've got these guys.”
After stepping out of his car, he
said the race felt like “the longest”
of his life.
Vettel on the other hand lamented
the “aggressive” strategy to pit
early, saying that he wasn't
convinced the ultrasoft tyre would
make it to the end of the race.
“I think overall we were not fast
enough and didn't have pace in the
race but I also think we tried to be

aggressive in the beginning and
obviously it didn't work out,” he
said.
“After that I had a different race on
a different tyre and I wasn't
convinced we could make it to the
end but pitting [again] wasn't an
option because we'd lose too
much time.
“I said before the weekend we
could only beat ourselves and I
think today we didn't get
everything out of our package.”
The opening act of the race was
headlined by a crash between
teammates that brought the safety
car out after just seconds.
Force India's Esteban Ocon
attempted to pass around the
outside of Turn 3 Sergio Perez,
who didn't leave enough room and
planted his teammate into the
barrier.
As the debris settled around
Ocon's mangled wreck, Vettel
made a timely move on
Verstappen to claim second place
just seconds before the safety car
was deployed.
The German flexed his Ferrari
muscle to pass him on the run
down Raffles Boulevard, setting
up a tantalising one-on-one
showdown with Hamilton that
ultimately failed to come to fruition.
Ferrari attempted to undercut the
Mercedes by pitting first on Lap 15
and placing the quicker but flimsier

ultrasoft tyre on. But Hamilton
comfortably covered the tactical
move, finding extra pace to come
out well ahead of Vettel who was
forced to spar with Perez before
resuming his chase.
To make matters worse for Vettel,
Verstappen reclaimed the spot by
pitting the latest out of the three on
Lap 18. He also placed on the
more durable tyre to ensure Vettel
would curse the tactical stop
further in the race's latter stages.
Meanwhile, Perez wasn't finished
creating carnage, making contact
with Williams' Sergey Sirotkin on
Lap 35 after a robust defensive
manoeuvre. The
stewards handed Perez a
drive-through penalty for
the second incident of his
race.

threatened to spoil
Hamilton's party as he
closed the gap to within
two seconds late in the
race.
But Hamilton engaged
another gear to extend his
lead and win the Grand
Prix by a sizeable nine
second margin.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff
held the ultimate praise for
Hamilton after the race, but not for
his Sunday efforts.
He said Hamilton's qualifying lap
on Saturday was the “best lap ever
seen in a Formula One car”.
“It's going to go down in the history
books,” he added.
Ricciardo cut a frustrated figure
after showing good race pace, but
failing to overtake Kimi Raikkonen
on the narrow Singapore streets.
“Qualifying is so important and it's
hard to not only overtake but to
follow,” Ricciardo said.
“I couldn't do anything with the
pace. At the end, you get close but
not close enough and you lose the
tyres and the track is so narrow. If
they defend a bit it's too hard.”

A young doctor had moved out to a small
community to replace a doctor who was retiring.
The older gent suggested the young one
accompany him on his rounds so the community
