This guideline provides an extensive step by step process of the correct way to measure and
record height, weight and head circumference of paediatric patients. All children and
adolescents should have their height and weight recorded on admission to paediatric
services. In addition, children under the age of two years should have their head
circumference measured and recorded.
Scope
This document has been developed to guide clinicians in the correct measuring and
recording of paediatric heights, weights and head circumference. The correct recording of
these measurements is vital in assessing and monitoring growth and development,
calculating therapeutic drug doses and anaesthetic requirements and to assist clinicians in
calculating nutrition, energy, protein and fluid requirements.
