SManager can datalog from the ECU when connected to the ECU and the vehicle ignition is switched
on. Note that some sensors are not datalogged if the engine is not running.
SManager uses frames to datalog. A frame is like a snapshot of all sensor values taken at one point in
time. The number of datalog frames and datalog length is shown below the menu bar in the main window.
Datalog files have the extension .sdl, and normally are associated with SManager so that double-clicking
on a datalog file will open the recording in SManager. If the file extension association does not work then
open the Settings dialog and check 'Associate calibration and datalog files with SManager'.
On Board Datalogging
The s300 has built in flash memory for datalogging with a laptop. The s300 has 16 mbit (2 mbytes) of
memory, and can datalog from 20 to 60 minutes depending on datalogging speed. The s300 v2 and v3
have 32 mbit (4 mbytes) of memory, and can datalog from 20 to 120 minutes depending on datalogging
speed and analog input options. The total number of datalogs is limited to 20 before the datalogs need to
be download to a laptop or PC. Note: The flash memory has a write lifespan of at least 100,000 write
cycles but it is not recommended to set datalogging on constantly.
See Datalogging Parameters for more information about setting up on board datalogging.
To download datalogs from the s300 to a laptop select the 'Datalogging' tab of the S300 Window.
Sensor Setup
This window allows you to customize sensor settings.
Abbreviation
This is the name shown in the sensors window.
Display Name
This name is shown in print-outs.
Description
Further explains the function of the sensor.
Unit
Shows the sensor data type.
Unit
Allows you to specify the unit for the sensor.
Import/Export Sensors
Import/Export buttons allow sensor setups to be saved and uploaded from any computer.
To download a datalog select the recording and either use 'Download', which downloads the recording
into SManager, or 'Save As...' which downloads the recording and saves to disk. Datalog recording
downloaded into SManager can subsequently be saved to disk as well.
'Delete' and 'Delete All' are used to delete recordings once they are downloaded.
Garbage collection - in order to reduce flash memory wear garbage collection is not performed on
deleted datalogs in the s300. Thus if anything but the last datalog is deleted, an unused gap will be left in
the flash memory, and the memory capacity subsequently is reduced. Such gaps are automatically
returned to available storage once the last datalog is deleted to form a contiguous memory block.
Export Datalog
The command exports the current datalog file in a comma separated value format.
Export Movie allows you to export a datalog recording as a avi movie file. The movie uses a blue
background which may be merged with in-car video footage to create a video overlap of engine
parameters over the in-car footage.
Filename
This sets the start and end time of the recording for video export.
Settings
FPS - frames per second. NTSC movies use 29.97 FPS, PAL movies are 25 FPS.
Width & Height - video frame width. NTSC movies are normally 720 x 480, PAL movies are normally
720 x 576
Font Size - The font size of the overlay information.
Information
This allows each datalogging parameter to be enabled/disabled and positioned on the video frame.
Compression
After Export is selected, a window is displayed requesting the video compression method. Uncompressed
avi video is very large (~30MB per second) but using a video compressor will result in a much smaller
file (~1MB per second down to 30 Kb per second).
Note that the compressor which are displayed are those which have been found by Windows. Not all
compressors will work effectively so it is best test each compressor using only a few seconds of recording
to see which compressor works the most effectively.
Output Example
On Board Datalogging Parameters
Datalogging parameters control the datalogging to on-board flash memory on the s300.
Datalogging
Enabling on board datalogging will automatically start datalogging once the start condition(s) are met.
Datalogging Start/Stop
Datalogging can be setup to start and stop in two different ways: using a unused ECU input as a switch, or
based on engine parameters.
Using a manual switch will start datalogging when the switch is on, and stop once the switch is off.
Base on engine parameters will start datalogging once the start conditions are both met (engine speed
and throttle). Datalogging continues until both the stop conditions (engine speed and vehicle speed) are
met.
The flash memory has a write lifespan of at least 100,000 write cycles but it is not recommended to set
datalogging on constantly.
Datalog Setting
Datalog AutoSave
Datalogs may be automatically saved when recording. The datalog is saved when datalogging or
recording is stopped, or the ignition is switched off.
When saving datalogs the datalog filename is generated from a directory, filename prefix and filename
suffix.
