Belief Statement: We, the physical educators at Renaissance Middle School, believe a sound body
enhances a sound mind, which improves a child’s mental alertness, academic performance,
readiness to learn and enthusiasm for learning.

As a quality physical education program, we provide our students:


 75 minutes of instructional time two or three times per week
 Highly qualified and certified Physical Education teachers
 Adequate facilities and equipment to accommodate each child
 A variety of physical activities for all students including team and lifetime sports, racquet sports,
dance, gymnastics, track and field and much more
 Maximum opportunities to be physically active and to improve personal fitness levels
 Opportunities to practice at varied skill levels
 A positive, supportive and cooperative learning environment

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Renaissance Middle School Physical Education Program strives to
educate the whole student physically, emotionally and mentally by providing the student with a wide
variety of enjoyable sports and activities to help develop teamwork, social skills, self-worth and an
improved level of fitness.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 Develop skills, attitudes and the understanding necessary to participate in a wide variety of
physical activities
 Develop appreciation of individual, dual and team sports, as well as lifetime recreational
activities
 Develop an awareness of the values of physical fitness
 Develop knowledge and skills necessary to attain optimum personal fitness
 Develop a sense of cooperation, fair play and sportsmanship through participation in class
activities
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLOTHING: It is an expectation that each student changes


clothes in order to participate in activities in a safe manner, as well as to maintain proper
hygiene. Students must wear clothes of an appropriate size and or length which do not violate
any state, county or local school rules. The Renaissance Physical Education Department request
students dress out in gray shirts and black shorts/jogging pants. In cold weather, sweats or
warm-ups and hats are to be worn.

LOCKERS and PERSONAL PROPERTY: Lockers are available in each locker room for
storage of each student’s personal property during class time. Students are expected to keep all
valuables secured in their assigned locker, if purchased (Physical Education lockers are available
for $5). Parents please note that large sums of money should not be brought to school. In
addition it is your understanding that the Physical Education Department will not be held
responsible for lost or stolen items.

GRADING POLICY: This class will adhere to Fulton County Grading Policy that consists of
the following grade scale:

A 90% and above


B 80-89%
C 79%-70%
F 69% or below*
NG No Grade
INC Incomplete

*Note: By state rule, any grade 69% or below is failing

The final grade in this class will be determined using the following formula/criteria:

60% Class Participation: MVPA (Moderate Vigorous Physical Activity) is


expected daily.
30% Performance Assessment: Activity, game and or sport-related skill testing
10% Test: Test on the rules and history of the sport

100% -Total

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to follow all school policies (PBIS) and
classroom procedures. Students will

 Listen: Listen to the teacher when he or she is talking


 Respect: Be respectful to others by words and actions (e.g. school/personal property)
 Show Sportsmanship: Be encouraging to others and skill differences
 Stay on Task: Students should remain with their group and engage in the activity, which
means no horseplay, excessive talking or disruptive behavior
 Positive Attitude: Students arrive Ready, Able and Willing to learn (R.A.W)
PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION: An open line of communication is encouraged
between teachers and parents. Physical Education teachers can be reached at the school by
calling (770-306-4330) and leaving a voice message. Physical Education teachers will check
their voicemail each day. It is our goal to respond to your message within 24 hours.

Note: This syllabus is a general outline of the course and is subject to modification.
