TRAVEL REPORT

I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Intravenous therapy is defined as the infusion of liquid substances directly into a vein.
Intravenous simply means “within vein”. Therapies administered intravenously are often included in the
designation of specialty drugs. Here in the Philippines, the RA 9173, otherwise known as the “Philippine
Nursing Act of 2002”, states that the administration of parenteral injection is included in the scope of
nursing practice. The Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) believes
that the nurses who practice IV therapy nursing are only those registered nurses who have been
adequately trained and have completed the training requirements of the IV Therapy Program are
Certified IV Therapy Nurse.

We arrived in the Conference Hall of Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) to
attend the update required for renewal of our IV therapy certificates at around 8:00 am, August 13,
2016. After the registration, an opening program was held led by none-other-than the Chief Nurse of
EVRMC herself, Fe B. Cuaton, RN, MAN. She oriented us on the flow and the expectations of the
updates/seminar. This was then followed by the discussion of the first topic, Fluids and Electrolytes
Management for Elderly. It was given emphasis that the older individuals are more likely to develop fluid
volume overload that the younger ones.

The next update following the break resumed at around 1:00 pm with a topic: Managing
Complications of Intravenous Therapy. The discussion tackled the different manifestations ranging from
basic to more delicate complications and how this can be resolved without going beyond the scope of
nursing. Previous practices such as flushing IV cannulas when they are clogged are eradicated from the
current practice since this can cause further harm to the patient.

The third topic, Intravenous Therapy on Blood Transfusion (BT), which was scheduled on the
second day had the most update. Previously, the physicians usually orders an anti-allergy
(Chlorphenamine Malaete) to patients receiving blood components as one of the pre-BT medications.
But according to recent studies, the medications will just delay the reaction to the drug thus may result
to delayed hypersensitivities leading to late symptoms. Diuretics are still play a vital role in preventing
hypervolemia or fluid excess post-transfusion.

The final topic along with the open forum ended at 5:50 PM. Thereafter, certificates of
attendance were then distributed to the learners. Finally, the evaluation and the closing program
eventually followed respectively. Moreover, the attendees registered for ANSAP membership ending the
whole 2 day seminar at 6:00 PM. We went home to Baybay City bringing new and interesting knowledge
not just for ourselves but for the interest of our VSU-BSN students.
