"The Crusader"

Brother Rice High School stands as a beacon in the education of students from all over the area.

10001 S. Pulaski Chicago, IL 60655 773/779-3410

O ommon Threads. People! Academics! Actvities! Events! These are the common hreads that keep BRHS together. Although each individual student comes from a different part of the city, comes from a different

background, comes from a different neighborhood or suburb, and comes from a different culture, each student shares a part in this great community. Each helps form the goals that bind all together, and all share a "common" goal by attending Brother Rice; that goal is to succeed.

Although some students are more vocal and noticeable in the Brother Rice Family than others, all students, faculty, and alumni are a part of the entity that makes up Brother Rice. Any student, no matter what he participates in, is a part of the family. If a student plays baseball, or basketbal~ or belongs to the National Honor SOCiety, or writes for a publication, or belongs to the fishing club, he is a part of the family.

The teachers at Brother Rice also share a "common" goal. Their goal is to provide students with an education that will help prepare them for the real world. Through the efforts and ambitions of the teachers and students, a "common" link to tomorrow will be reached.

SPIRIT WEEK

Each student as he enters Br. Rice inherits a sense of pride. As the school year progresses, the pride begins to grow. During Spirit Week, this pride showed on the faces of the students, faculty, and staff.

Excited talk about the Homecoming football game against Mt. Carmel filled the normal hallway chatter. Signs were hung in the corridors, and festivities were set up in order to get the students into the spirit. Spirit Week included "Hawaiian Day," where students and faculty dressed in their favorite Hawaiian clothes, and "Roll Out Of Bed Day," where students practically just woke up and came to school

Spirit Week continued with

the annual Homecoming pep rally, led by enthusiastic Student Council president Kevin Carter, as well as speeches from Coach Gleeson, Mr. Ryan, and football co-captains, Ryan Muldoon, David Diehl.

As the Homecoming hoopla of Spirit Week settled down to the big event, the football team brought the level of excitement up to a new high as the Crusaders' were victorious over the Caravan. This was the Crusaders first victory over Mt. Carmel since 1981. The exciting victory was capped off by a happy Homecoming Dance held that evening in the school gym.

The seniors certainly got excited during the pep rally. Maybe a foreshadowing of the game's outcome'

HOMECOMING

Day of Victory!

With a record of 3-2, the Crusaders were struggling as Homecoming week approached. After starting off 3-0, they had lost two straight games on the road and had not scored since week three. To add to Rice's problems, their homecoming opponent was Mount Carmel, then the Number two ranked team in the state. They had not beaten Mount Carmel since 1981, the year of their last state title, and they were still stinging from a 48-12 embarrassment suffered at the hands of the Caravan the previous year.

When the day finally arrived, more than 4,000 fans held their breath in anticipation and anxiety. After giving an early field goal to the Caravan, Brother Rice

controlled the game the rest of the way. The defense played with reckless abandon and exhibited a ferocity that hadn't been seen in recent weeks. They managed to force four turnovers and were able to subdue all of Mount Carmel's offensive weapons. Led by quarterback Kevin Badke, the offense dominated both on the ground and in the air, scoring three touchdowns. After the dust had settled, the final score was 21-3.

At the end of the game, the student body rushed the field. The Carmel victory was a long time coming, and everyone wanted to savor the joy of it.

FOUNDER'S DA Y / HALL OF FAME

On January 20, 1998, the Brother Rice Community gathered once again in celebration of Founder's Day. Founder's Day is the day in which the school pays tribute to Edmund Rice and to all those who have sculpted Brother Rice into what it is today.

The assembly began with seniors Frederico Garcia, Ryan Muldoon, and junior Frank Cheers delivering speeches on the Hispanic, Irish, and AfricanAmerican lifestyles and how community applies to them. Frederico spoke of the unique aspects of the Latino heritage and how they contribute to Brother Rice. Ryan talked about the importance of understanding different cultures and how such understanding fosters tolerance toward others. Frank spoke about the African-American way of life and one of the greatest AfricanAmerican leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As a conclusion to the three speeches, Brother Patrick Martin stepped up to the podium and reflected on the life of

Edmund Rice and his motto: "Act Manfully in Christ Jesus." This slogan was impressed upon every student in attendance.

Following Br. Martin's speech, former principal Br. Segvich introduced the newest recipient of the Hall of Fame award, Mr. James Antos. As assistant principal, Mr. Antos was in charge of the Hall of Fame candidates, but when seeing his name on the nominations ballot, he turned the job over to Br. Casey. "I seriously thought it would be Br. Segvich," Mr. Antos commented. "J was looking for his family all morning."

"Speechless doesn't describe the feeling, said Mr. Antos, "I was really humbled ... this was quite an honor. Everyone wants to do a good job, the best that they can. When I looked up and saw my family arrive, 1 realized how lucky 1 was." Mr. Antos joins the same great vein with many other Brother Rice legends in the Hall of Fame.

TAKE A LOOK!

Hail our Crusader team, as it advances in the frey .... Everyone hears it; everyone sings it; as one school weaving common threads; together. When speaking of Brother Rice High School, academics and spirituality are a given. Athletics, on the other hand, are a whole different ball game, and that's what makes them so exciting to be a part of.

Through years of dominance in their respective sports, many Rice squads have been dubbed power houses in the Chicago Catholic League. These teams include basketball, baseball, bowling, swimming, volleyball, and of course, water-polo.

Brother Rice students participate in multi-

sports teams.

With an abundance of talent on lower levels, more teams are expected to rise to the top. The success of these teams pits Rice as one of the most successful sports programs in the Catholic League.

Having the ingredients for success: talent, hard work, dedication and pride; the teams still cannot do it all by themselves. They need help from contributing factors. Coaches, parents, friends and family, and the student body, provide them with support on their long journeys.

Rice Pride is a rare gift instilled in and a vaila ble to every Crusader willing to accept it. It quickly develops and matures into priceless school spirit. This pride brings the whole school, student by student, together working towards one common goal, greatness. Lasting friendships are quickly created as well as something in common to talk about. This mixture of these elements provides a stable background in Brother Rice, also having young men interweave athletics, school, and family into a wonderful result. .. and will break right through straight and true, onto victory!

The team opened the season at home with a 20-0 pounding of Bogan. They then went on to pummel St. Joseph's 35-0. The following week, the Crusaders played host to rival Marist. Brother Rice scored 21 fourth quarter points to overcome Marist in the most thrilling game of the year. The defense played extremely well in the second half and the offense came alive by passing more often. More than 5,000 fans attended this game.

The team sleepwalked into next weeks game against Loyola,

and they went on to lose 14-0. The next week, the Crusaders were embarrassed at Notre Dame 30-0.

The team had a two game losing streak going into homecoming week against Mount Carmel. The last time the Crusaders beat the Caravan was in 1981, and the seniors were thinking of last years humiliating 48-12 loss. However, the Crusaders finally played to their potential embarrassing the Caravan 21-3. Marian Catholic came to Joe Johnston Field the following week. The

Crusaders had several chances to win in the closing minutes of the game, but Marian prevailed 21- 14. The team was playing for their playoff hopes as thy traveled to St. Rita. The Mustangs edged the Crusaders 14-7. The team ended on a high note as they routed St. Francis de Sales 41-0 on Senior day. All of the seniors got to play in the game and were able to experience playing Brother Rice football one last time.

Coming off of a wonderful 6-3 debut season as freshmen, the Crusader sophomore team needed big shoulders to live up to the high expectations.

After defeating Bogan and st.

Joseph, the team flew into a tough Catholic League schedule in which they dropped six in a row. Fortunately, they were able to rebound and end the season on a positive note in thrilling fashion with a season finale overtime victory over Fenwick, 13-12.

"The guys stepped up their play on this level nicely, even facing adversity; they never gave up," stated Coach Griffin, offensive coordinator. "Expectations might not have been fulfilled in the win/loss column, but in the effort column, 100%, day in and day out."

Led by the play of fullback Vic Yanz and quarterback Mike Nolan, the Crusaders were loaded with talent. "Mike is my M.V.P. He did a great job stepping up for Steve, (Steve Scott, varsity) at a

position he has never played before," said Coach Griffin.

In their first year of play at the high school level, the freshmen did a decent job, finishing with a respectable mark of 4-5. Led by Coach McCann, linebacker Tim Winters, and running back Luis Rodriguez, they highlighted the year with a 29-0 romp over St. Laurence in the season opener.

The Cross Country team trained harder than ever, hoping to meet their ambitious goal of winning the Catholic League Conference. According to Coach Molenda, the team needed to run relaxed, knowing the runners prepared themselves the best they could.

To ease the competitive tension, the team slogan was "Run Ugly." Unfortunately, the players took this motto to heart. Although each individual member showed moments of brilliance, these moments never all oc-

curred in the same race. The team never once ran as a single dominant pack, and throughout the season several players encountered menacing injuries.

But the entire team still had fun. The team gathered together for a pasta dinner after school on Fridays before their Saturday morning race. One weekend the Varsity squad traveled down to Peoria after school on Friday, spent the night at a hotel, and the next day ran on the course where the state meet would be held.

The Varsity Team, comprised of seniors Ed Hosty, Bill Guinane, and Jeff Schultz, juniors Mike Cava to, Marty Maloney, and Keith Gutierrez, and sophomore Dan Wnek, finished fifth in the Catholic League, but captured third a week later at Regionals. However, a week after that the season ended with an eleventh place finish at the state sectionals. Ed Hosty gave a valiant effort and just missed qualifying for state.

Meanwhile, the Varsity " ovice" team went down in history. Led by seniors Mike Burns, Jason Fitzpatrick, and Tim Kinsella, the team recorded its best finish ever at the Roy Gummerson meet, winning second place. Juniors Dan Richie, Bill Funk, and Dan Forman also strengthened the J.V. team.

Do not overlook the FroshSoph team. Led by sophomores Greg Potter Mike Wazio, and Pat Mc ally, the team possessed promising talent and great enthusiasm. Freshman Nick Romo's dad provided everyone with Gatorade, ice water, and snacks at each race! That was the enthusiasm the team needed.

Under coaches Han Williams and Jimmy Harkness, the Crusader soccer team fought through another tough schedule. 'We had a relatively young team," said George Limberopolous. There were great expectations for the relatively young team. Out of eleven starting players on the field there were only two seniors George Limberopolous and Roger McGreal. With senior George Limberopolous and junior Edgar Navarro as captains the team began the bat-

tle for Catholic League.

At first the possibility of a Catholic League championship seemed bleak for the Kicking Crusaders. Then they took on the undefeated Mt. Carmel Caravan. The 2-0 victory over Mt. Carmel lifted the spirits of the Crusaders. The win over Mt. Carmel left only Providence in the way of winning the Catholic League South.

However, the high hopes of the Kicking Crusaders were crushed by Providence in a 2-0 loss. Los-

ing the Catholic League damaged the spirit of unity amongst the team. A broken team prepared to play Marist in the first round of the play-offs. The lack of unity cost the Crusaders the game 2-0.

"We had a blast!" said Jack Huminsky. The Crusader soccer team may not have been successful in bringing home the Catholic League title or a State Championship, but they were successful in having fun.

Senior captain Mike Buttron led the team the entire season, including an individual second place award at Regionals, scoring a 78. "The regular season was a very important part of our year, preparing us for a competitive post-season," said Coach Alberts.

After the regular season, the team prepared for the Catholic League Championships with hard work and determination.

The work paid off, earing them a strong third place finish. The team was lead by junior Kevin Dalton and senior Kevin Carter, who both shot a 76. Junior Sean Collins followed with an 81 and senior Jim Gergits shot an 83.

The Regionals followed Catholic League, leaving the team with a disappointing tie for first but a meritorious trip to sectionals. At sectionals, the team failed to qualify for a trip down state but ended the season with a feeling of accomplishment. Junior Mike Hynek described the season with.

one word "chop."

The Junior-Varsity golf team finished the regular season with a five and four record. The team, lead by sophomores Brian Siska and Marty Hynes. ended the season with a fourth place finish at Catholic League. Although the Brother Rice hockey team didn't win many games this season, it was still a very successful year. During the season, the young Crusaders gained valuable playing time and experience. The team, consisting of eleven underclassmen and four seniors having previous experience with Catholic League style of play, competition with top teams proved difficult throughout the season. Led by team captains Brian Fielding, Brian Williams, and Philip Zaleski, the team finished the season with a season record of 18 wins and 32 losses.

However, bright spots did occur, too. This was most emphasized when the team stuck together and played hard, especially against #1 ranked Mount Carmel, but unfortunately lost 2-1 in the final minutes.

Brother Rice had a great basketball team this year. Under the coaching of Pat Richardson and Jeff Budz this team became Catholic League Champions as well as Regional Champions. The Crusaders have shown their strength when they beat teams like Nazareth early in the season with a score of (91-54). This was just the beginning as the Crusaders went through their schedule beating teams like Gordon Tech, Weber, Loyola, Providence and etc. No one who attended the games will forget the Crusaders' battles against Fenwick, Leo, and Richards. The Crusaders fought their way to the sec-

tionals only to walk away empty handed after a (51-60) loss to Richards.

Starters Pat Harvey, Tim O'Neill, and Tom Pavljasevic, led the team in points. Pat Harvey ended with a total of 521 points, and a three point percent of shooting percent of 43%. Tom Pavljasevic ended the season with 335 points and 190 rebounds. Tim O'Neill ended the season with a total of 366 points and 128 assists. They all played a major role in the success of their team.

The 1997-98 season for the freshmen and sophomores was equally successful. The sophomore team lost its first game of the year to Rockford Boylen. However, the sophomores, coached by Mr. Alberts, came back strong, winning their next fourteen games, and capturing first place in the Shephard Christmas Tournament on the way to a finish of 22-2. The team defeated previously undefeated Leo 59-53 in overtime to pace them to a perfect 14-0 record in the Catholic League and the Catholic League Title.

The freshman team won the two tournaments they entered

the Notre Dame Holiday Tournament and the Nazarath Christmas Tournament. The team finished with a 20-4 record, second best in the Catholic League. The B-Team finished with a 14-4 record.

As my self-proclaimed title, "Captain of the Substitutes" implies, I usually sit back and ride the bench. However, this enables me to watch the sheer greatness of our bowlers and appreciate what we do. For instance, did you know that percentage-wise, bowling is the most successful sport in Brother Rice history? Well, it's true.

Both teams concluded the season with great ease. The Varsity took 2nd Place in both the South Section and Catholic League. Leading the way was Senior Jeff Enriquez with an average of 182, who also had the high game (237) and high series (645) for the season. Following him was Senior Bill Zerinskas with an average of 176.

The Junior Varsity ended up in 1st Place in the South Section, but was bumped by De La Salle to 2nd Place in the Catholic League. Alex Santiago led the team's high game and high averages for the second consecutive year. This year Alex finished with an average of 183, and his high game of 244 also led the entire Catholic League.

After all the pins had fallen, this year's All-Star Team disappointedly finished in 3rd Place. Most teams would be satisfied to take Third in a group with so much competition. However, this was our worst finish in six seasons.

WRESTLING

The 1997 wrestling program was highlighted with much success. Much needed senior leadership was provided by captains Matt Earner, Gerry Shannon, and Brendan Butler as well as by Mike Dennis and Brent Annen. Finishing with a 12-9 record, they collected three victories each in the Rockford and Rice duels. Juniors Ryan O'Malley and Dan Ritchie stepped up to contribute to the varsity.

The frosh-soph team finished an incredible run with an 11-1 record. With tough wins over Mt. Carmel and st. Laurence, the team let the league know what they were about. They finished

in the Catholic League to Providence, and two grapplers won first place league individual honors: Matt McNulty and Paul Stankiewicz. Second place finishers included Dan Kovats, Ed Doody, and Steve Cozzie; Marty Butler took third place.

With an abundance of talent and with the help of Coach Hopkins and Coach Porgio, the team capped off an exciting and successful season.

Coached by Bill Murphy and Keith Dombkowski, the 1997-98 Crusader swimming and diving team had an up and down year, but finished with a third place performance at Catholic League and a gutty second place finish at the important Sectional meet.

Key Frosh/Soph performances were given by Tom Walsh, Mike Hague and Brad Smith in swimming and Brad Miller in diving. The varsity team received strong swims from sophomore Sean Murphy, juniors Ely Calero, David Lozano, Dermont McGuire, Steven Rowe, and seniors Ernes-

to Diaz, Federico Garcia, Wally Nied, Jason Woodward, and double IHSA State Qualifier John Holton. Diver Josh Mourillion, injured during theseason, added his usual important high spirited attitude to the team.

Best times were recorded by all at the Sectionals, with Jason Woodward missing the State qualifing time by a proverbial whisker.

The team highlight for the season was the incredible comeback win at Schaumburg Relays. Having no divers at the meet, the Crusaders went into the swim-

The Crusaders went on to winn the next five events, overtaking Hinsdale and Schaumburg, for their seventh consecutive team title. It was a stirring Crusader team victory that will be remembered by all!

Picture it.. the State Championship game ..... After rallying back in the fourth quater, the score is tied with less than ten seconds to play. The ball is tossed into the hole, but quickly thrown back out. There is the final shot and the ball skips into the net right under the arm of the Fenwick goalie to give Brother Rice the lead and the State Championship. This gamewinning shot, by Luis Diaz, was the perfect ending to a nail-biting championship game and an exciting water polo season. It was a true team effort with the entire starting team of Cabo, Diaz, Garcia Holton, Murphy, and Wood-

ward scoring goals. Much needed support was given by Juniors Ely Calero, Luis Diaz, David Lozano, Chris Murphy, Justin Watrobka, and Sophomore Sean Murphy. The team finished the season with a record of 19 and 3.

The J.V. team, coached by Frank Mulcrone and Osbaldo Ramierz concluded an outstanding undefeated regular season with a spectacular win against Fenwick to become Chicago Catholic League Champions. Sophomores Brad Miller, Dan Miller, Brad Smith, and Freshmen Beta Garcia, and Roger Garcia led the team throughout the season.

The Crusader Volleyball program has had extraordinary success in its short existence, and this year was no different. The team was perfectly chosen with five Seniors for leadership and seven Juniors for talent. Every player on the team contributed to the team's success, and each victory was a team effort.

The team finished the Catholic League season with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses, earning them second place. Their overall record included 18 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie. The team played the hardest schedule in the program's history and, although. their record was not exactly perfect, they played good all year.

Big victories came over Loyola, Mt. Carmel, and Marist, but with them came heart breaking losses aganst Providence, Oak Lawn, and Naperville Central.

"Although the team failed to live up to their preseason state rank of seven, they did play their hardest and did leave it all on the court," said Dan Sanders.

This year the tennis team has had much success and has broken the 500 mark with their record of 69-68. They have had many successful matches against stronger teams and have prevailed throughout the season with the help of Coach Grogan. Coach Grogan has been proud to have coached such a fine team. He describes the team's work throughout the year as, "terrific. "

Three members of the tennis team were named All Catholic League. Tom McCarthy placed 3rd in Catholic League, while doubles team Giancarlo Mira

After peaking as a team with a 3rd place finish at the Chicago Catholic League Championships, the varsity track squad capped a rocky season by failing to place at the Sectional meet.

The team, led by Junior captains Joe Grimes, Mike Archie, Mike Cava to, Mac Fleming, and Senior captain Cliff Seaton, could not manage to find their rhythm throughout its long season.

The team was talented enough, but lacked senior leadership and consistency. "We could have done really well, but we never seemed to get on a roll," said Mike Cavato. Senior Cliff Seaton, taking second in the Sectionals for the triple jump, is

Our "Rice Pride" applies to the classes, to the sports teams, to the clubs and organizations, and most importantly to each other as human beings. Freshman year marks one of the most dramatic changes in the lives of young men. After standing on top of the world a year before, a decline takes place and suddenly they are at rock bottom. Before the year started, they thought they knew everything and that nothing could stop them, but high school started and it was time for a change. They walked the halls and suddenly they had everything to learn and everybody was in their way. During this difficult year, through common threads, a fellowship was formed. Education and Rice Pride overwhelmed them, and they were now full pledged members of the Brother Rice family. Through these common threads, friendships were born, rivalries began, experiences were shared, and together they grew into future school leaders.

The class of 2000 has accomplished a major feat by overcoming the rank of freshmen and adding another patch to Brother Rice's quilt in the 1997-98 school year. By this, the sophomores are asked to add their individual thread to the stitching, making sure that the patch they have created remains strong with the rest of the quilt. These threads can be an infinite amount of things. Whether it is a remarkable gift or talent or just a person's presence in school, they all add a common thread to the stitching of Brother Rice.

umerous accomplishments by the class of 2000 show that they are helping complete the Brother Rice quilt. These achievements, such as doing a major research paper or learning geometry or completing physical education, all demonstrate how the accomplishments allow for the entire student to be complete.

Even though there may be a few sophomores who achieve more academically or athletically than their classmates, it is the contributions of all that allow for the strength and importance of keeping those common threads strong.

Sophomores in Mrs. Hall's English class demonstrate a typical Puritan child's game of "Blind Man's a lesson for The Scarlet Letter.

As juniors prepare to take on a more important role at Brother Rice they must learn to bind togeth~r. However, this goal has already been acheived in their years here. Through stud~nts' interactions throughout their years at Brother Rice, they have learned to bind together in order to create a school atmosphere conducive to learning. The respect gained did not come easy snd the task of leading the school sannot be taken lightly. Now is :he time for the Junior class to show their Rice Pride.

Junior year is the year that creates a new attitude amongst the students. Not only do students grow within school, but also outside of school. Through Christian Service students learn to become disciplined and selfsacrificing. Junior year also makes students more aware of the society around them t~rou~h Kairos and speeches on life Situations such as drug use.

Junior year is the year that stu-

dents can gain the most. Within the classroom, students prepare for coll~ge by putting extra effort into their studies and homework. The hours of study finally payoff w hen you receive those high A.C.T. or S.A.T. scores or get a 4 on the advanced placement test. By putting in the extra time towards schoolwork you can shape the rest of your life. Junior year can make or break a student. What students must do is realize this and take their studies seriosly. By binding toget~er as a community at Brother Rice, students have a support that will carry them through the tough road ahead.

Bill Martlink

When freshman year began, we, the class of '98, were not together. We were from different social classes, different ethnic groups, and different grammar schools. We came together to be educated by the Christian Brothers at Brother Rice High Schoo!.

We have been through four years of good times and bad times at Brother Rice. We have received acheivement awards and disciplinary detentions, we have earned"A's" and "F's," we have seen good friends come and go. Now were all bound together by the invisible strings of the Brother Rice experience. We are connected to the students of the past and to the students of the future, we all have something in common, Brother Rice.
