A sigh of obvious disappointment escaped
the capacity crowd of 5 0 0 0 when it was
announced Kathryn Kuhlman would not be
conducting the meeting they were attend­
ing—and that Kenneth Hagin would be
ministering instead. (This was at the N e w
York F G B M F I Convention in late N o v e m ­
ber.)
The spirit of the group quickly picked up,
however, at the teaching from God's W o r d
on the various ways o n e can receive heal­
ing—through the manifestation of the
Gifts of the Spirit, as in Miss Kuhlman's
ministry—through a special anointing of
G o d ' s healing power—through one's own
faith in the W o r d of G o d — e t c .
Then it began. T h e anointing of God's
healing p o w e r was great. T h e y walked out
of wheelchairs and pushed them back up
the aisles. Blind eyes w e r e opened. Sores
which had covered one woman's face, ins­
tantly disappeared. Brother Hagin said you
could tell where they had been as the heal­
thy new skin took their place.
The highlight of it all came when an esti­
mated 1000 responded to the invitation
for salvation Brother Hagin gave at the
close of the service. T o G o d be the glory.

EPHESIANS 4:11-12
11 And he gave some, apostles;
and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some; pastors
and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the
saints, for the work of the minis­
try, for the edifying of the body of
Christ:
T eachers and teaching hold a
well-defined and important place
in the N e w Testament. Teachers
are mentioned in all three lists of
ministries, or ministry gifts, in the
church. (Eph. 4:11-12; I Cor. 12:28;
Rom. 12:6-8.)
We separate these ministries to
define them, however one person
can stand in more than one office.
The prophet, the evangelist, the
pastor, the teacher, all seem to
combine in the one office of apos­
tle. The teacher and the pastor can
unite in one man. A s could the
prophet and the teacher.
Acts 13:1 says, "Now there were
in the church that was at Antioch
certain prophets and teachers...."
Then it lists the names of five men.
One was Paul. Another was Bar­
nabas. This verse emphatically
states each of these five men was a
prophet, or a teacher, or a prophet
and a teacher. Barnabas was a
teacher—the 11th chapter of Acts
says so. Paul was a teacher. H e was
also a prophet. He had revelations.
H e r e c e i v e d the w h o l e gospel
which he preached by revelation.
(Gal. 1:11-12.) Both Barnabas and
Paul then stepped into the apos­
tle's office. They were called by
the Holy Ghost and sent forth to
be missionaries, or apostles to the
Gentiles.
A R O V I N G MINISTRY
Pastors are settled men. They
live in one place because they're
to have the oversight of the flock.
A pastor couldn't v e r y well have
the oversight of a flock in Tulsa
and reside in N e w York City.
A teacher does not have the
oversight of a flock. A teacher
usually has a roving ministry—a
ministry among the churches and
among the flock of God. Like the
apostle or the evangelist, he is on
the move. Apollos is an example of
a teacher who plainly traveled
continually. (See Acts 18:27; I Cor.
16:12; Titus 3:13.)
A DIVINE GIFT
The teaching ministry requires
a divine gift. One thing which has
hindered our seeing what God
says regarding this ministry is
that w e ' v e left the impression Sun­
day School teachers are the gift

true, partially, but in the general
sense it is not true.
A n y b o d y w h o has knowledge—
whether spiritual knowledge or
natural knowledge—which would
be a blessing should impart it.
A n d to the best of our ability w e
should be able to teach that to one
another. But God is talking about
an office as important as the office
of pastor—as important as the
office of evangelist—which stands
in the same list—where men or*
women are called by God, set by
the Spirit of God, and endowed by
the Spirit of God to stand in that
office and teach. T h e r e is a
difference!
Y e a r s a g o , I used to teach
because it was required of the pas­
tor to teach the auditorium class. I
stayed with their tradition—but
oh, I hated to teach. I liked to
preach. I thought you couldn't get
anointed unless you were waving
your arms, shouting at the top of
your voice, and spitting cotton. I
liked to preach and sense the
anointing of God to preach. I hated
that Sunday morning session of
teaching. I was so glad when that
class was over and I could get to
the preaching business. It upset
me so that rather than think about
it and be upset all the week, I
wouldn't even look at the Sunday
School quarterly until late Satur­
day night. I taught the class and it
grew all right—but I was so glad
when it was through. I didn't have
the gift.
But one day—God gave me a
gift! A n d when it came down into
m y spirit I was conscious it was in
there! I found out you can stand
before a small crowd of half a
dozen people or before a large
crowd, and never move, never
even hardly lift your voice, never
even hardly wave your arms, or
lift your hand—but such a strong
anointing of the Spirit of God
comes that the Word of God comes
flowing out of you like water out
of a faucet. A n d what a blessing
when it comes! I k n o w a little, not
a lot, but a little bit about this
office because I've stood in it now
for some time.
A teacher is not a teacher
merely by virtue of natural ability
or a natural inclination to teach. In
some cases the natural ability and
inclination might provide a back­
ground for this gift God puts in
you if H e calls you to teach to
come shining through. But it is not
just a natural something.

in the church at large because

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, longsulfering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, Meekness, tem­
perance: against such there is no
law. Galatians 5:22-23

T his fruit of the spirit is not the
fruit of having the baptism of the
Holy Spirit. It is the fruit of the
recreated human spirit.
T h e translators of the K i n g
James version capitalized the let­
ter "s" in Spirit in this 5th chapter
of Galatians. But W. E. V i n e points
The Fruit of the Spirit is Love
out in his Expository Dictionary of
New Testament Words that it is
sometimes difficult—particularly
in Galatians—to tell whether it's
talking about the H o l y Spirit or
the human spirit. There is only
one Greek word for spirit—pneu-
ma. If it specifies H o l y Spirit, w e
know it refers to the H o l y Spirit.
But when a scripture just says
"spirit," you have to determine
from the context whether it's talk­
ing about the H o l y Spirit, or the
human spirit.
A g a i n , this fruit is not the fruit
of having the baptism of the H o l y
Ghost. It is the fruit of the recre­
ated human spirit because of the
life of Christ within. I think this
can be easily proven b y the scrip­
tures. Notice what Jesus said.
JOHN 15:5
5 I am the vine, ye are the bran­
ches: He that abideth in me, and I
in him, the same bringeth forth
much fruit: for without me ye can
do nothing.
Where does the fruit grow?
On the branches!
Who are the branches? The H o l y
Ghost?
No! We are!
Jesus uses the illustration of a
tree. We used to have a pear tree in
the backyard of our little frame
home down in Garland, Texas—a
little sugar pear—it made great
pear preserves. I've gone out there

and pulled pears off that tree. A n d
I never did see those pears grow­
ing anywhere else except on the
branches.
N o w w h y did that fruit grow out
there on the branch? Because it
was receiving something from the
trunk of that tree—the vine of that
tree. A life which was in that vine
was flowing out into the branches
also.
The fruit of the spirit is the fruit of
the recreated human spirit—be­
cause of the life of Christ within;
because of the nature of God in
our spirits.
The Fruit of the Spirit is Love
The fruit of the spirit is, number
one, love.
I JOHN 3:14
14 W e k n o w that w e h a v e
passed from death unto life,
because w e love the brethren....
John is talking about the new
birth here. H e says w e know w e
have passed from death unto life—
that's spiritual death unto spiritual
life. A n d h o w do w e know it?
Because w e have this fruit called
love. It's in our spirits! The Bible
says the love of God has been shed
abroad in our hearts b y the H o l y
Ghost. (Romans 5:5.) That doesn't
mean by the baptism of the H o l y
Ghost. We are born of the Spirit of
God. A n d that's when the love of
God comes in.
Eternal life is the life and nature
of God. W h e n w e w e r e born
spiritually, w e partook of God's
life, and God's love. In our fleshly
birth w e partake of the life and
nature of our parents. When w e
are born of God, w e take on God's

nature. God's nature is life and
love. The love of God has been
shed abroad in our hearts.
You can develop in love. Fruit,
you see, grows. It doesn't come
fully mature. John, in His First
Epistle, talks about being made
perfect in love. That means matur­
ing in love—maturing in this fruit.
I don't think any of us have
matured in it yet—but I think
some of us are making some
progress. Praise the Lord.
It has disturbed a lot of folks that
sometimes you can see Christlike-
ness in character in the lives of
some people w h o are not Spirit-
filled, more than in some who are
Spirit-filled. You see, the fruit of
the spirit is for holiness, Christ-
likeness in character. A n d that's
what will convince people of re­
ality. If you have spiritual gifts,
which are not balanced out with
Christlikeness and holiness, it
won't amount to too much.
T h e difference b e t w e e n fruit
and gifts is: fruit is from within, it
takes time to develop; gifts are
from without, usually complete as
given. Fruit grows gradually from
within. Gifts come immediately
from without.
Love is not a spiritual gift. Love
is a spiritual fruit—a fruit of the
spirit. Paul sandwiched in what
w e call the Love Chapter right bet­
ween the 12th and 14th chapters of
First Corinthians. A n d the 12th,
13th, a n d 14th c h a p t e r s g o
together. T o be balanced, w e need
to stay in all of them.

tongues of men and of angels, and
have not charity (love), I am
become as sounding brass, or a
tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of
prophecy, and understand all

though I give my body to be

Then Paul goes on to g i v e an ex­

4 Love suffereth long, and is
kind....
A lot of people suffer a long
time—but they're not kind while
they're suffering. T h e y just put up
w i t h t h i n g s and w i t h p e o p l e
because they have to. Even pastors
s o m e t i m e s suffer a l o n g w i t h
folks—but they're not v e r y kind
while they do it. Sometimes a wife
suffers with her husband, and puts
up with things, but she's not too
kind while she does it. A n d vice
versa. But love suffers long, and is
kind....

4 ...love envieth not; l o v e
vaunteth not itself, is not puffed
up.
5 Doth not behave itself un­
seemly, seeketh not her own....
That's a great rule to g o by—
Seeketh not her own.
"Yeah, but I've got m y rights."
A s long as you're going to con­
tend for them, you're not going to
walk in the love of God either.
I C O R I N T H I A N S 13:5-8
5 ...dove) is not easily pro­
voked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but
rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth
all things, hopeth all things, en-
dureth all things.
8 L o v e n e v e r f a i l e t h : but
whether there be prophecies,
they shall fail; whether there be
tongues, they shall cease;
whether there be knowledge, it
shall vanish away.
Tongues, prophecy, w o r d of
knowledge—all those things will
one day vanish. We won't have
need of them. There will be no
tongue talking in heaven, no
p r o p h e s y i n g , no w o r d of
knowledge or gifts of the Spirit
will be in operation there. Those
things will pass away. But love
won't! Love couldn't! Because God
is love! He's eternal!
I think everybody, e v e r y few
days, if not e v e r y day, ought to
read this passage from the
Amplified translation—and prac­
tice it! Let's g o back over part of
t h i s Love Chapter from the
Amplified translation. We'll begin
w i t h verse 4—the expose' on
love....
Love endures long and is patient
and kind;
love never is envious nor boils
over with jealousy;
is not boastful or vainglorious,
does not display itself haughtily.
It is not conceited—arrogant and
inflated with pride;
it is not rude (unmannerly), and
does not act unbecomingly.
Love (God's love in us) does not
insist on its own rights or its own
way, for it is not self-seeking;
it is not touchy or fretful or
resentful;
it takes no account of the evil done
to it—pays no attention to a
suffered wrong.
Some people think it's a point of
weakness to take no account of
evil done to you, to pay no atten­
tion to a suffered wrong. But it
isn't. It's the God kind of love. A n d
the closer you walk with God, the
more His love dominates you, the
more you'll be that way.
Let His love dominate you. Oh
no, not human love. Human love is
selfish. Companions, husbands
and wives, need to let the love of
G o d d o m i n a t e them—not just
natural human l o v e . Naturally
you had a certain amount of physi­
cal affection and attraction toward
your mate. But natural love is so
shallow. It can turn to hatred over­
night. The love of God won't do
that. Christians have the advan­
tage over other folks. Not only can
they love their husbands or wives
with that natural affection, but
they can add to it this divine love.
This love which never seeks it's
own, but seeks the other's welfare.
It does not rejoice at injustice and
unrighteousness, but rejoices
when right and truth prevail.
Love bears up under anything and
everything that comes.
I like that. If you walk in the God
kind of love, you've got to make it
e v e r y time. It bears up under any­
thing and everything that comes.
(Love) is ever ready to believe the
best of every person,
Some folks are always ready to
believe the worst. I never was that
way. It just seemed as if I couldn't
help it—something on the inside
seemed to compel me to believe
the best of everybody. The Bible
says that the love of Christ com­
pels us.
...its hopes are fadeless under all
circumstances and it endures
everything (without weakening.)
There are nine gifts of the Spirit
and nine fruit of the spirit. A n d
this great love chapter is embed­
ded between the two principle
chapters on spiritual gifts. It im­
plies those spiritual gifts can be
operated without love. But when
they do, of course, it just doesn't
avail. It turns people off.
Gifts of the Spirit should be
balanced out with the fruit of the
spirit. That doesn't mean we're
going to be perfect now. But at
least the fruit ought to be begin­
ning to bud a little. It may take
time to mature. But the thing that
encourages me is, I may not see
the full grown mature fruit—but at
least I can see some buds starting
to put out. ~u

THE TEACHER

they have a natural gift for reduc­
ing all knowledge to a science.
A n d they've applied that gift to
Christian truths. T h e i r natural
abilities are highly trained—some­
times professionally, sometimes
self-developed b y a personal love
for teaching. Often these teachers
know nothing at all about the bap­
tism of the H o l y Ghost. A n d some­
times when they do, they k n o w
nothing at all about really getting
into the Word of God and deep
spiritual truths, and nothing at all
about being anointed to stand in
that office. A s a result their teach­
ing is dry and divisive.
Just mark it down—the d r y
o n e s are not c a l l e d and not
anointed. It's more or less natural
ability coming through them. This
ministry—this teaching gift—is
anointed by the Spirit of God just
as much as the pastoral gift is
anointed, just as much as the
evangelist is anointed, and just as
much as the prophet is anointed. It
may not be manifested in such a
supernatural w a y , but the un­
derlying current is there.
The more I thought about it as I
studied and prepared along this
line, the more I could see that
teachers, probably more than any
other ministry, are responsible for
divisions which harass the body of
Christ. It's little wonder in some
quarters that teachers are
r e g a r d e d w i t h h e s i t a t i o n and
suspicion, and s o m e t i m e s not
welcomed as they should be. But
when a teacher creates division it
simply indicates a lack of an es­
sential in that teaching gift and
teaching ministry.
N o teaching ministry in the
power of the H o l y Spirit is dry, but
it will convey rivers of living
w a t e r . A n d no t e a c h i n g e m ­
powered b y the Spirit of God and
perfumed with the love of God will
d i v i d e the house of G o d . W e
should be interested in unity and
not division.

THE WATERER
Paul described the teaching
ministry as "watering."

word garden rather than husban­
dry in verse 9.)
N o one had ever preached the
gospel at Corinth before Paul
did—he usually never built on
another man's foundation—so he
said, " I h a v e planted, A p o l l o s
watered, but God gave the in­
crease." Paul is saying here, and I
think he puts it so aptly and so
beautifully, that teaching is water­
ing.
A certain man w r o t e about
going through the greenhouse of a
v e r y successful florist. H e saw
beautiful flowers, a maze of color.
This florist was known for certain
achievements. The visitor com­
mented about how beautiful it all
was, and how it must require a lot
of time and know-how.
The florist said to him, "Do you
k n o w the most important in­
dividual involved in this whole
procedure?"
"No," he said.
"The waterer," was the florist's
reply. " N o matter what w e have if
that man does not know just how
to water these plants, it will all be
ruined."
M a n y a work of God has been
ruined. Great evangelistic efforts
h a v e g o n e to naught—though
hundreds responded to the call of
God—because that watering pro­
cess wasn't there to encourage
them to cleave to the Lord and to
b e c o m e a beautiful garden for
God.
If you've ever planted a garden
you k n o w that just because you
put the seed in the ground is no
sign you're going to get some­
thing. It has to be watered. If it
never got any water, you'd never
eat an onion, or pull up a radish. It
has to be watered. Teaching is
watering. So much has been lost
because w e haven't really recog­
nized the importance of the teach­
ing ministry.
When the watering process—the
teaching of the Word of God—is by
a spiritual gift, it leaves the people
of God refreshed and revived. If it
doesn't, it just simply isn't in the
power of the Spirit.
It is said of Apollos, he "helped
them much." (Acts 18:27.) When
the teacher waters the plant—the
seed w h i c h has already been
planted, and has come up and is
growing—he helps them much.
Teaching should be a help—not a
hindrance. It should be an en­
couragement—not a discourage­
ment. It should put something into
you—not take something out of
you.
When teaching is in the power
of the Spirit, division can be
caused sometimes b y unbelief and
hardness of heart. Under the
ministry of Jesus this happened.
T h e y w o u l d n ' t accept His
message. Paul and the apostles ran
into that. It is certainly true divi­
sion can be caused because of
these things. But, alas, alas, too
many times divisions have come
in the body of Christ because some
teacher just wanted to push some
pet doctrine of his o w n which re­
ally didn't amount to too much
and wasn't spiritually beneficial.
A true teacher should shun
causing divisions as he shuns the
plague. Except, of course, where
it's unavoidable over some great
fundamental issue.
We cannot compromise on an
issue like the virgin birth of Jesus
Christ. N o r on such a great issue as
Jesus Christ being the divine Son
of God, and both God and man.
You can't compromise on the
