General Installation Guidelines

Read all instruction procedures before starting
installation . The PIPETRAB should be installed by
an authorized electrician or instrumentation
technician. Observe all relevant local electrical safety
regulations and guidelines for installation. The
operating voltage of the system must not exceed that
of the arrestor (28 VDC max ).

INSTALLATION LOCATION: The PIPETRAB should

be installed as close as possible to the sensitive
electronic equipment. This installation can be made
by connecting the pipe nipple directly to the chassis of
the device, or with the use of a T-Coupler fitting at the
conduit entrance to the device. The thread size of the Figure 1. Pipetrab Wiring Diagram
PIPETRAB is 3/4” NPT. A thread adapter can be
used if other fitting sizes are needed (not supplied).

Installation Procedures Continued

Pull all four wires through the pipe nipple (see
Figure 1.).

Install the PIPETRAB nipple into its mounting

location while holding the four wires outside the top
of the nipple. Tighten nipple finger tight and then
an additional quarter turn. Use a pipe wrench if
necessary.

Connect the PIPETRAB protective element to the

our wires outside the nipple (in series with the
loop). The direction of installation is determined by
“IN” and “OUT” designations on the PIPETRAB
circuit board. Surge Suppression devices must be
connected upstream of the signal input to be
protected so that “IN” points toward the direction
from which the surge voltage is expected. The
incoming field cable should be connected to the
“IN”. The signal input of the device should be
connected to the terminal blocks marked with
“OUT”.

Replace the PIPETRAB circuit board into the pipe

nipple. Reattach the cap over the grounding
disk. Tighten cap finger tight and then an additional
quarter turn.

Grounding Procedures
Surge protective devices (SPDs) operate by
“diverting” unwanted transient energy away from
sensitive electronics to ground. Therefore, the
reliability and efficiency of any SPD is dependent
upon a good earth ground connection. A ground of 5
ohms or less is optimal.

Installations with ground established. The surge

discharge path of the PIPETRAB is automatically
connected to the pipe nipple when assembled. No
additional ground connections need to be made. If
the installation is directly to a transmitter chassis, the
chassis must be grounded. If connecting to a T-
coupler, make sure that the conduit at this point is
connected to earth ground. The PIPETRAB must be
grounded for effective operation.

Grounding Procedures (cont'd) Specifications

Installations without a ground reference. Table 1. General Specifications
If installing to a conduit or transmitter housing that is
not grounded, a ground path will need to be
established.

Option #1 - Connect the PIPETRAB protective

element directly to the ground screw within the
transmitter housing. To do this, remove the
grounding disk (see Figure 4.) and run the ground
wire back to the earth ground reference inside the
transmitter head. Attach a longer ground wire with
a splice if necessary.

Option #2 - Strap a #6 AWG or larger copper

conductor to the PIPETRAB nipple with a stainless
steel clamp. Route this #6 AWG ground wire as
straight as possible to the closest grounding
system connection. Or, drive a ground rod at the
installation location.
