The Character of Ophelia

Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius and the ‘beloved’ of Hamlet. In the play,
Ophelia certainly earns the pity of the audience/reader because of her situation. She is
forced to play the role of a good daughter and sister to Polonius and Laertes. She has no
freedom in any matter. Although she loves Hamlet, she is prevented from encouraging
him because he is above her in status.

Ophelia is driven by her obedience to her father to spy on Hamlet. When Hamlet
shows anger and indifference (not caring for her), she is shattered. When Hamlet
accidentally stabs her father to death, she is unable to take it anymore and becomes
mad. In fact, her madness and suicide are mainly due to the pressure applied on her by
Polonius and Hamlet.

Till the very end, Ophelia remains a victim of circumstances (situations) and
earns the pity of the audience/readers.
