Hard Drive not Visible in My Computer - How to Fix It - Full Version

Ajoutée le 3 sept. 2012

A 3-page mini-site with help for other hard drive issues:

BACK UP YOUR FILES

My youtube how-to video:
http://youtu.be/OVoVbeBbV-o

If your hard drive is not detected, or is not found or not shown in My Computer, then it's a fairly
simple job to fix the "not recognized" problem in the Computer Management Console. This is
the full version of how to Initialize the drive, or otherwise fix the problem in the Disk
Management Utility, with added links showing how to repair or, as a last-hope effort, delete the
MBR.

@Squall Ranger An i/o error means input/output error. This means some self-check numbers
don't match, which can mean corrupt data. It might be your data that's corrupt, or it might be
the hard drive's own operating files.

Either way the situation is a bit grim, but by no means hopeless. Click through to my mini-site,
which is here: http://www.bentsnake.com/repair-hard-drive-how-to.html

Your interest is in page two, non-destructive MBR (Master Boot Record) repair. The procedure
given doesn't affect your data at all, but repairs (replaces, actually) the hard drive's own
operating files.

Hopefully this will give you access to the drive. If so, as soon as you can do two things:

1. Shameless plug, back up your files. My own how-to is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=OVoVbeBbV-o

The backup software is free, so you can stay safe for the price of a USB flash drive.

2. Check your drive for errors. Both Seagate and Western Digital have free software for checking
hard drives. Download and run.

NOTE: With both Seagate and Western Digital, a short check takes only a few minutes, but a long
check can take several hours. It's something you start before you head out to work in the
morning, or run it overnight.

And after all that it wouldn't hurt to run Windows' own disk checker (Windows chkdsk). I've
found that sometimes Windows catches errors that the manufacturer's software misses, and
vice versa. Once again, a short check takes only a few minutes, but a full check with fixing errors
is an overnighter.

I hope this might help.

@cheekynia it worked for me, but im not sure if your case is the same as mine, in my case i
backed up everything and wiped, i have no idea what your case is
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 3 ans
@cheekynia No you should not. Initializing will blank your hard drive, as the video warns.
You only unplugged, so unless your hard drive got some rough handling and was damaged you
probably just need to wiggle wires. Work both ends of your connecting cable(s), push, pull, twist,
bend, it's not impossible for these plugs to become loose.

If your hard drive was connected to a different computer, then there's some small chance that
your MBR (Master Boot Record) was damaged. This is not really likely. but it could happen. Look
at page 2 of my mini-site here: http://www.bentsnake.com/repair-hard-drive-how-to.html

The MBR restore given has not damaged any of several hard drives I've used it on.

I hope some of this might help.

@koko mu well, i have a program called umbunto, and remember what i did was an external

Ivy Mitsuno [Ivychandessu]
Ivy Mitsuno [Ivychandessu]
il y a 3 ans
@koko mu I think that sadly you have to wipe it, or maybe get unbunto and try to recover your
files, windows is kinda picky :/
I think the best advice you is that one, get unbumto, try and recover your files, thats the best
choice, if it doesnt work, well maybe wipe your drive, and with luck try and recover your files
with a file recover, i used that as well for my old HDD i even saw files i didnt remember I had xD
Actually unbunto was the only OS who recognized my external HDD and i was able to recover (:
I hope that works for you ^^

il y a 4 ans
Your drive is not in disk manager because it's not installed, meaning the computer doesn't know
it's there. The computer can't "see" it.

Always first suspect a bad connection. Don't use a hub. Wiggle, twist, push & pull the
connecting cable.

Take a look at my 3 page mini-site of hard drive issues. Apparently YouTube lets us post links
now so here ya go.

MY DEAREST BENTSNAKE!!!
You sir saved my life! And a newly bought $75 SeaGate External Hard Drive that I desperately
needed to back up my laptop prior to sending it off to DEll for repairs to the speaker outlet.
I had foolishly deleted the SeaGate Dashboard. It did not allow the 1Tb Ext. HD to be recognized
by my laptop after tying to use the clone programme Macrium Reflect software. The USB plug
accidently came out at 85% and when I plugged it back in - my Dell laptop no longer SHOWED
the F:// SeaGate Drive. I was DEVASTATED! My husband and I went so far as to go buy yet
ANOTHER Ext. HD this one was called an expansion drive by Toshiba this time, again 1Tb. Due to
YOUR video here I think I may not have to use it, and can try once again to make a clone of my
laptop on the SeaGate Ext. HD because it is NOW visible in my Windows Explorer Folder which
shows my drives and DVD player. Thank you Thank You Thank you sir! If you ever come to Palm
Bay Florida you have a lovely dinner out on us! I'll let you know if I get this clone accomplished
this time. Yours MOST Sincerely Sir. Antoinette Jackson (islandantoinette at yahoo.com)

Thank you soo much!!!! I was able to fix 3 hard drives using this method. I had taken apart 2 old
computers and wanted to put the hard drives in my htpc running windows 8 but they were not
detected. Using my desktop running windows 7 I was able to do this. For some reason windows
8 could not see the drives but windows 7 could. After I finished doing these steps on my desktop
I did have to set partition as active so my htpc could see the drive. :) IT'S ALIVE!!!!

I used this hard drive a few days ago no problem but since few days I can't seem to get it to work
anymore. I would plug it into my laptop and not get anything at all, I then noticed the light was
blinking so I knew that isn't a good sign. So I tried plugging it to my desktop and it still had the
same problem. Blinking light and no detection of the hard drive being plugged in.

Anyone have a solution for this sort of problem? I would hate to lose all my movie and work. I've
had this drive for about a year and a half now.

Excellent presentation... Informative and laid out logically in a linear form. A far cry from some
who are not organized and think that extremes of profanity imparts knowledge ... Nothing more
than cover for stupidity and ignorance . This should be used as a bench mark in how to present
instructional videos, without the blaring , pounding "music" that adds absolutely NOTHING.
Professional. Well done.

Hi. I have a freeview box hard drive and I want to format it for use as a spare external HDD. Thing
is, the freeview boxes are not recognised by windows so it doesn't show up in my computer or
disk management. Although the computer bubble pops up, drivers installed and the item is
working fine, I cannot find a way to format it seeing as windows doesn't add it to the my
computer section. Have you any ideas on this? I did find this pieve of text online but it went over
my head lol>>>

"Grab the ISO for GpartED - throw it on a CD, and boot to the CD -
It will recognize whatever format it is in because it is either a UNIX OS or Linux OS that created it
in the first place. Then you can make it NTFS or FAT32, even exFAT"

I have no idea what that is on about. What I do know, there's a lot of people trying to format
freeview box hard drives but there's no answers for them. I am guessing in America you don't
have them or there would be a lot of info on here somewhere on how to do it. A freeview box,
just in case you don't know, is a set top box, like TiVo I guess, but it receives tv signals through an
aerial on your roof, (this is in britain) and converts the signal into pics ofr your tv and it also
records tv. Your help would be very appreciated, or anyone elses. Thanks.
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
You're right, I don't know what a freeview box is. But Gparted will do the job if anything will. It's
a freebie, download it from gparted.org

The trick is that Gparted does not run in Windows, it runs independently, complete unto itself.
The .iso is burned to a CD (see below), and then your computer runs off of that CD. Thus you
bypass Windows' limitations.

An .iso is a type of file meant only to be burned to a CD. BUT you don't just burn it, you "burn
.iso to CD." Search for that (sans quotes) here on YouTube, there are how-tos.

Then you boot (start) your computer to the CD. Search "boot to CD" (sans quotes) here on
YouTube.

Booting to a CD takes a couple-few minutes because CDs are much slower than the computer's
actual internal speed. I don't mean ten minutes, but a few. Don't think it's not working, sit back
and let it start in its own time. Unless you have special requirements, answer startup questions
by just hitting the Enter key.

With Gparted running you can deal with any drive that your computer (not Windows) can
detect. How, exactly, to do that? How else, search "gparted" (sans quotes) here on YouTube.

If Gparted doesn't list the drive you want to work with, well, your computer can't detect that
drive, and that's pretty much the end of it. I hope this might be of some help.

Thanks for the video! When the "Disk Management" window first comes up, Windows 7 has
recognized the new drive- a 1tb HGST. A dialogue box titled "Initialize Disk" is already showing
which asks which partition style to use-either MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition
Table). Which do you recommend?
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
The Master Boot Record (MBR) is a small collection of files that identifies the hard drive to the
Windows operating system. This is the one you want.

You'd use GPT only if you had a specific reason for doing so. It's in the "if you need it, you'll
know" category.

bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
This confusing error message doesn't actually apply to your computer, it applies to the hard drive
you're trying to work with. Generally, Windows cannot assign a letter to the drive, so it can't
control the drive. Here are my best-guess solutions, which are only that.

First and always, check your connections. Both ends of the cable connecting the drive, and try
another cable if you have one. Try another computer, if possible.

Did you install a driver for the hard drive? Uninstall it and restart. If you can't find the driver to
uninstall it, never mind about this.

When doing the steps in this video, did you make the drive a "dynamic drive"? Nope, you can't
do that. Do the steps in the video again, but don't choose dynamic drive. If you never saw a
dynamic drive question, never mind about this too.

How geeky are you? Can you get into Device Manager? If you can find the drive you want to
work with (not always easy), right-click ~> Disable the drive, then restart. If Windows doesn't re-
enable the drive after the restart, do so yourself. If you don't know how to do this, never mind
again.

Probably your best bet in the first place...maybe. Look in "Show More" underneath this video,
and click through to my mini-site. Look at page 2, non-destructive MBR (Master Boot Record)
repair. In this case you don't care about destructive or not, you're just writing a new MBR to the
drive.

In the getting-pretty-wild department, disable anything by Acronis that might be running. Go so

far as to uninstall, and later re-install. Some say that Acronis has been known to lock things up
and interfere with Windows. BUT with this I'm going on pure hearsay, don't get too excited
about it.

Same "interfering with Windows" theory, disable your antivirus, and later re-enable.

Remember that both Seagate and Western Digital make disk checking programs for their drives.
Download and run. But of course this only works if the program can find the drive. If it does
work, be aware that a short check takes only a few minutes, but a long check takes several hours.

I hope some of this might be helpful.

What if I want to restore my Hard Drive back with all the stuff I had on the Hard Drive? I just
normally plugged in my Hard Drive to my PC and just suddenly it didn't appear on the computer..
can you please help me?
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
You're talking about data recovery, which is a different subject. But see below.

If a drive doesn't appear in Disk Management, the most common causes seem to be either
plugging into a hub, or loose connectors at one or both ends of the connecting cable.

Hubs can reduce power to the drive. Plug directly into a USB port on the back of the computer
(these receive power directly from the motherboard, no wires).
Wiggle, twist, push, pull, bend the cable near the connectors, try to get the cable connectors to
make contact. If possible try a different cable, or plug into a different computer.

If none of this helps, then please look in Show More underneath this video, and click through to
my mini-site. You might look especially at page two, which is non-destructive MBR repair. But
please remember that I'm guessing from a distance. I hope some of this might help.

in an error box accompanied by the error beep, " Data error(cyclic redundancy check)"
bentsnake

.
A Cyclic Redundancy Check error means some self-check numbers don't match, which can mean
corrupt data. It might be your data that's corrupt, or it might be the hard drive's own operating
files.

Either way the situation is a bit grim, but by no means hopeless. Look in "Show More"
underneath this video, and click through to my mini-site. Your interest is in page two, non-
destructive MBR (Master Boot Record) repair. The procedure given doesn't affect your data at
all, but repairs (replaces, actually) the hard drive's own operating files.

Hopefully this will give you access to the drive. If so, as soon as you can do two things:

1. Back up your files. Still in "Show More," look at my YouTube video on file backup. The backup
software is free, so you can stay safe for the price of a USB flash drive.

2. Check your drive. Both Seagate and Western Digital have free software for checking hard
drives. Download an run.

NOTE: With both Seagate and Western Digital a short check takes only a few minutes, but a long
check can take several hours. It's something you start before you head to work in the morning,
or run it overnight.

And after all that, it wouldn't hurt to run Windows' own disk checker (Windows chkdsk). I've
found that sometimes Windows catches errors that the manufacturer's software misses, and
vice versa.

I hope this might help.

What should i do?
bentsnake

I don't know that I can help much, but here are my guesses.

Don't use a hub. Plug the USB flash (pen) drive into the rear of the machine. This connects
directly to the motherboard.

Wiggle (gently). Twist (gently). Try another port (plug), usually there are 2 or 3 on the back of
the machine. Does it work in a different computer (if available)?

Sorry, but looking for a bad connection is about all I got. Wishing you luck.

Hi. I have windows 7 and while i'm trying to format it, the message pops out "Windows was
unable to complete the format". Can you help me?
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 3 ans
Maybe. First of all you can't format a drive that's in use (such as C: drive), so consider that.

Otherwise, click through to my mini-site, which is here: http://www.bentsnake.com/repair-hard-

drive-how-to.html

First try page 2. You don't care about data on the drive (if any) since you want to format it, but
fixing the MBR is the least intrusive process.

Otherwise try page 3, the nuclear option. Don't be put off by the length of the page, I just give
lots of warnings. Scroll down to "4 Doing it" and fire away.

The nuclear option returns the drive to a blank factory state. Note that afterwards you'll have to
run the processes on this page to make the drive usable.
Sorry, no guarantees, but I hope this might help.

My Samsung external HD isn't even showing up on the device manager screen. Literally the only

bentsnake
bentsnake

Sorry, I can't help with the events viewer. That's unknown territory to me.

But if a drive doesn't show in Disk Management, then suspect a bad connection. The drive is just
literally not connected, even though it appears to be.

Please look in "Show More" underneath this video and click through to my mini-site. This is a
collection of pretty much all I could find on the subject of problem hard drives. There's lots of
emphasis on wiggling the connecting cable, and PS don't use a hub, plug directly into the

bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
If a drive doesn't appear in Disk Management the most common causes seem to be either
plugging into a hub, or loose connections at one or both ends of the connecting cable.

Hubs can reduce power to the drive, so plug directly into a USB port (plug) on the back of the
computer because these receive power directly from the motherboard. If that doesn't help then
wiggle, twist, push, pull, bend the cable near the connectors, try to get the cable connectors to
make contact.

Use a different port on the same computer. If possible try a different cable, or plug into a
different computer.

If none of this helps, then please click through to my 3-page mini-site, which is here:
http://www.bentsnake.com/repair-hard-drive-how-to.html

Page 1 is more about loose connections. Page 2 might help when the hard drive spins, but won't
do anything else. Page 3 is the nuclear option, you'll lose all your data but the hard drive might
be restored to good as new.

I hope some of these might help.

hi bentsnake, thank you for sharing the video. I'm currently having a problem similar to which
had been explained by you in great detail.

I'm using Win 7 and my external HDD is WD my book 2TB, in the disk management section it's
said that my disk is not initialized. But, I'm actually have been using this external HDD for around
6 months prior to this problem of undetected drive by Win explorer occur.

Is there anything I can do to save my data? And after I save my data, do all I need to do is
initialize my external HDD as in your video?

@Lin Halim DO NOT initialize your drive now, this will blank it.

Here's my guess, and it's only that. Sorry, no guarantees. Go to my mini-site listed in "Show

Wish I could do more, but that's all I have to offer. Except...well...back up your files. My own

The drive is obviously good, since it works on the one computer. You have to figure a bad
connection to the second computer.

Hubs are famous for causing problems with external hard drives because some don't deliver
enough power (as opposed to data) for the hard drive to operate. Solution: don't use a hub.

Otherwise, about all I can suggest is plugging into a port (plug) on the rear of the second
computer, because the rear ports are connected directly to the motherboard. And of course try
different ports/plugs, and wiggle-twist-pull-push-bend the connecting wire.

The hard drive should spin even if the drive can't otherwise work. The drive can't work at all if

This points to the power cable, or a power connector. There's probably a spare power connector

checked your power cables and connectors, do it again, and this time get serious.
Wiggle, twist, push, pull on the power cable and connectors. If possible try a power

Apparently (remember that I don't know) this happens when you have a "dynamic" (not "basic")

You checked the Seagate (also Maxtor) site, yes? They have a disk check/repair utility that runs
from CD, so you don't have to have Windows running to check a disk. I'm pretty sure they also
have one (maybe the same one) that runs from a USB flash drive.

Otherwise, I can only suggest hooking the Maxtor up as a slave drive--perhaps on another

Not to worry. Like the man says, it's not a bug, it's a feature.

Write protection is intended to protect your data from accidental erasure. You can turn it on or

But there is no standard way of turning write protection on or off, every manufacturer has their
own method. So go to the manufacturer's site for your hard drive, or, probably just as good,

There's a setting or switch that disables changing the data on your drive. This is to prevent
accidental data loss, and/or for security.

This might be a software setting that you change with your keyboard or mouse, or a password,

Every manufacturer has their own scheme. Go to the manufacturer's site, or search your model

Wiggle, twist, push, pull, bend the connecting cable near the connectors, try to get the

An i/o error means input/output error, which means some self-check numbers don't match,
which can mean corrupt data. It might be your data that's corrupt, or it might be the hard drive's
own operating files.

Still in "Show More" underneath this video, look at my YouTube video on
file backup. The backup software is free, so you can stay safe for the price of a USB flash drive.

2. Check your drive for errors. Both Seagate and Western Digital have free software for checking
hard drives. Download and run.

NOTE: With both Seagate and Western Digital a short check takes only a few minutes, but a long
check can take several hours. It's something you start before you head to work in the morning,
or run it overnight.

And after all that it wouldn't hurt to run Windows' own disk checker (Windows chkdsk). I've
found that sometimes Windows catches errors that the manufacturer's software misses, and
vice versa.

I hope this might help.

Sorry, I have to say that Windows 8 is an unknown to me.

I'm still willing to say that yes, the procedure is the same, because Microsoft famously tacks on
some more bells and whistles, then advertises a "new and improved" Windows--this being only
my personal opinion, of course.

But the trick is always in knowing where to click, and with Win8 I have no idea. All I can say is
right-click My Computer and see what happens.

@bentsnake I can find disk management just fine...In fact Windows 8 is somewhat like Windows
7 in many regards, I have a Windows 7 machine and a Windows 8 machine...

I personally don't care for Windows 8 but unfortunately you'll be hard pressed to buy a PC
without Windows 8 on it nowadays unless of course you build it yourself and pay $150 for the
Windows 7 OS...

Thanks for the reply, most people don't even have the common courtesy to reply when someone

bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 4 ans
You mean when you right-click the new drive in Disk Management, yes? It sounds to me like you
right-clicked the new drive, then clicked "Mark Partition as Active." Computers try to start to the
active partition.

Maybe the easiest thing at this point is to enter the BIOS and set the boot sequence so your
original hard drive is the first boot device. Unfortunately, BIOSs are not standardized (for no
good reason) so I can't help you with that. It might help to search YouTube for your computer
brand and BIOS.

Otherwise, I recommend Gparted, which is a freebie partition manager at gparted.org Gparted

will allow you to de-activate your new hard drive and return it to a neutral state. Again
unfortunately, there's a learning curve to Gparted--though it's not extreme.

Otherwise, you can use Clonezilla (freebie at clonezilla.org) and just clone the old hard drive to
the new one, which I assume was the idea in the first place. Yet again unfortunately, here too
there's a learning curve, although here too it's not extreme.

Otherwise, your best bet might be to install Windows on the new hard drive. By doing this you
can start to the new hard drive, enter Disk Management, and reset things to your liking. Or once
you have Windows installed you could just transfer your programs and data, of course.

Not to say these are your only options, but they're all I can come up with. Somebody else might
have a better (i.e. easier) idea.

REMINDER: Back up, back up, back up. My vid on the subject:

what i mean is if you pause at 3:16 in your video yours says Disk 1 Unknown 37.25gb Not
Initialized next to the unallocated drive. Mine says Disk 1 Basic 931.55gb online next to the
unallocated drive and when i right click the Disk 1 the only options i get are
New Spanned Volume
New Striped Volume
Convert to Dynamic Disk
Convert to Gpt Disk
Properties
Help
im using W7 i dont have an option to initialize anything when i right click the Disk 1
and no my Partition is not marked Active so i guess that's another problem i will have to address
also when i do all the steps in this video ( - the one i cant ) it says formatting like yours does then
i get a popup that says can not format then it just says Formatting next to the Disk 1 and wont
stop saying formatting till i restart my computer at which time i have to unplug the power cord to
the hard drive so my old drive will boot up then once my old drive has started up i re-power my
new hard drive and in Disk management it says
Disk 1
Basic
931.55
Online
and instead of unallocated under the new volume it say Healthy,Primary Partition but it still wont
show up in My Computer and i cant seem to put a operating system on it because my
motherboard is very old and the disk i have to use to get the programs needed so my
motherboard works properly require windows xp but when i try to put windows xp on my new
hard drive it seems to split the hard drive for some reason it will only let me format 131gb with
win xp and that seems to ok then when its all booted up i only have 131gb to use on my 931gb
hard drive and i only have W7 as an upgrade so i have to have Wxp on my computer to use W7
and when i try to put W7 on the new hard drive it recombines the 131gb with the 800gb left on
the hard drive to make it back to 931gb but it will never finish the install of W7 and i have left my
computer on for a VERY long time to try and get it formatted but after a full 51 hours on my
computer being on (from the start of installing W7) it was only 61% done installing W7 its really
frustrating that nothing seems to be working

Or: Was the drive attached while Windows was being installed? If so there might be delete-proof

Otherwise, go to my mini-site (link in "Show More") page 3, the Nuclear Option. The procedure

Don't open it. 1. This voids your warranty. 2. HDDs are not field-serviceable anyway.

If the BIOS doesn't see the drive, then the drive is effectively not plugged into the motherboard.
This can only mean a bad cable, a bad connector (on the board, the cable, or the drive), or a
broken drive.

You've tried different cables and SATA ports, so about all I can suggest is a warranty claim.

BUT anyway try "SeaTools for DOS" Google with quotes. It detected an undetectable drive for
me...once.

Write Protection is not a fault. Many storage devices can be write protected, meaning existing
data can be read, but no new data can be written. The idea is that you can protect your files
from being overwritten or erased.
I don't know how to un-write-protect your particular hard drive. Look on the manufacturer's site,
or it might be easier to search Google or YouTube. Maybe something like:

write protect [brand] [model]

For clarity, NTFS started with Windows 2000, and according to Wikipedia continues in use
through Windows 8.

I've tested Recovery Console on both Windows 2000 and XP, but nothing later. So the only
answer I can give regarding later versions is: I don't know.

However, my own opinion is that different Windows versions are more marketing, less substance
(What problem do the "tiles" solve?). So I expect that Recovery Console would work just the
same, but I still have to finalize on I don't know.

I have a new hard drive that has all the data of my laptop on, I've had it put into an external case.
When I connect the external hard drive using a usb cable it does not show in my computer. Yet
when I go on to the data management it shows up online with no problems. Do you know how I
can access the files on this external hard drive?

The vast majority of computers have one drive, C: drive, which is all anybody really needs.

D: drive then is the CD or DVD reader/burner/player. Other devices, like USB flash drives,
become E:, F:, and so on as they're plugged in or removed.

Stated drive sizes are nominal. Yours is 300gig, which is probably all you'll ever need. Right-click
any drive, then click Properties, for more information. Use the Cancel button to close the dialog
that opens.

In your case I'd especially suspect the cable connector (plug) on the drive. Push left, push right,

Sorry, Win8 is an unknown to me. But just for the sake of making an effort:

Is the drive new? Check at the manufacturer's site that it's compatible with Win8. You might
need to update the drive's firmware.

A version of Roxio CD recorder that's not compatible with Win8 can cause problems.

But all in all, wish I could help but I got nothing.

Since saving data is not an issue, look in "Show More" right underneath this video and click the
link for "How to Delete a Hard Drive's Master Boot Record (MBR)." This is a nuclear option that
will restore your drive to the factory state (if that can be done).

Don't be nervous about the lack of illustrations on the page. Scroll down to part 4, Doing It, and
you'll see that there are just a few steps involved.

When that's done Initialize, then Partition and Format the drive.

Sorry, but I know nothing about those units. I can only suggest suggest wiggling the wire.
Sometimes the small connectors only make a good contact when you hold the wire just so.
Or sometimes the hard drive inside the case is OK, but the circuitry that connect the drive to the
USB port has failed. It might be possible to take the drive out of the case and use it that way--but
of course that voids your warranty, and it's not real easy.

So I got nothing, sorry.

If a drive doesn't appear in the Computer Management Console (as opposed to My Computer)
the situation is not great. BUT...

Sounds like your drive is spinning up, but there's no data transfer. This points to the data cable,
which is the smaller of the two connected to the drive.

Use the data cable from your DVD or other drive. Or plug into a different SATA port (plug) on
your motherboard, they're all the same.

And after changing cables...sorry, I got nothing. At least you're under warranty.

Sorry, I don't have much help to offer. You seem to be describing a dying drive. But...

Try different cables. Use the power and data cables from your CD or DVD player.

Both Seagate and WD have repair software on their sites. Download and run.

In the "Show More" section for this video, did you see the link to delete-renew the MBR?

Generally, "not ready" errors mean Windows can detect a device, but can't control it. Not so
good. Warranty claim? That's about all I got, good luck.

Your hard drive is in an external USB case, so when you got a "device successfully installed"
message, the "device" was the USB case, not the hard drive itself. The case contains a SATA ~>
USB adapter card, and that's the "device" your computer is installing.

What I'd do:

1. Remove the problem hard drive from the case. Remove the side cover from the computer.

2. Unplug the cables from the CD-ROM (or other) drive inside the case, plug them into the
problem hard drive.
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 5 ans
(2 of 2)

(There are two cables, power and data, and they only plug in one way. All drives use the same
power and data cable configuration.)

3. Power up see whacha got.

Notes: Lay the computer on its side, and it's OK to run it that way (makes no difference at all).
You don't have to screw the problem drive into the case to test, I'd rest it on a few books.

CAUTION: Moving parts and live electrical circuits. Unplug!

I'm sorry to tell you that input/output (I/O) errors are not a great situation.

Check your cables. Substitute the cables from, for instance, your CD-ROM.

Right-click ~> Properties, and in the dialog that opens click Tools ~> Error Checking.

After that, Google for your exact error code, but input/output errors very often indicate what
engineers call catastrophic failure. Sorry, but as you see I basically got nothing.

Otherwise, the best thing I know to do is hook the problem drive to a working computer. You
don't need 2 computers, and you don't need to actually install the drive.

Put the problem drive on, say, a couple of books and run both data and power cables to the
drive. Take power from your existing power supply wiring harness. You'll need an additional data
cable to plug into the motherboard--the longer the better.

3. Disconnect one hard drive, then the other. Each time see what you get running on just one

a nuclear bomb solution.

Data recovery is not what this vid is about, and I can only offer a little help.

The usual best hope is to plug the problem drive into another computer. Or into the same
computer running on a different hard drive. Hopefully the problem drive will appear as a slave

Beyond that, Google for data recovery, and look here on YouTube. The whole subject is iffy, so I

That's not really what this vid is about. Google for "recover data from hard drive" or similar and
there's lots to see. Also here on YouTube.

But check again. Your drive is not visible in My Computer, but is it visible in the Disk

In the properties dialog click the Tools tab. You then can error-check the drive...which might or

Yes! Everything will be gone, your hard drive will be blank.

Both Western Digital and Seagate make repair software available on their sites, and other
manufacturers may also. These are what you need to repair a hard drive, if repair is possible.

When you use a manufacturer's check-repair software, be aware that a full scan on a large hard
drive can take several hours. So plan ahead and make it an overnighter, or start the scan when
you leave for work.

The short scans take only a few minutes.

As in Play Station 3? Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about them.

However, if they have a hard drive (and I don't know that they do), and it's giving you trouble,
the usual way to handle the situation is to remove the hard drive from the Play Station (or
whatever device) and plug it into a computer. The files are then available to you.

I guess you might need some sort of adapter to match the plugs, but as before, I dunno. Newegg
dot com is pretty good with adapters.
bentsnake
bentsnake
il y a 5 ans
In my experience a CRC is a grim situation. But your drive does appear in the Disk Management
Console so the manufacturer's repair software might detect it. Google for:

Seagate: download seatools for windows

WD: download data lifeguard diagnostic for windows

NOTE that a long/full test with either can take several hours.

If neither can detect your hard drive, then click "Show More" under this vid and look at my page
for deleting the MBR.

Sorry, that's about all the help I can offer.

You removed a hard drive from a computer that was turned on and running? Some computers
support that, some don't. In any case it's a very, very risky business. Mechanical damage is not
unlikely.

If you only want to get the hard drive running, then please see the note I've added in the
description of this vid: how to delete an MBR. But this will blank a hard drive, everything will be
lost.

It sounds like what you want is to recover data, in this case "data" including programs you had
installed before.

Sorry, but that's an iffy business I can't much help you with. It's different from what's covered in
this video.

The usual, and probably best, thing to do is plug the problem hard drive into another computer.
It will then appear as a slave drive and you can copy or drag-drop as you wish.

But if the drive just doesn't spin, well, then you're into a data recovery service. Read: $.

Input-Output (I/O) device covers a lot of territory, so I can't say, sorry.

I have to fall back on my old standards:

1) Check that both ends of both cables (power and data) are firmly plugged into the hard drive,
and into the motherboard. Push on the connectors, be certain.

2) Any drive that Windows can recognize shows up in Disk Manager, even it it's not in Explorer.

Device error + drive not in Disk Manager = the drive might be a goner, but that's a wild guess
from a distance.

The Disk Management Console lists all the drives that Windows can detect. Make sure your
cables are plugged in, both power (small), and data (large). Check that both ends are firmly
plugged in. With newer SATA drives (with the much smaller cables) it's easy to have a loose
connection.

Otherwise...well...I wish I could help you, but I can't from here.
