Understanding Culture, Society and Politics

Politics - It is referred as the theory of Art and practice


governance.
Government - Is an Example of of a political Institution, It
exercise power especially in relation to governance and decision
making.
Power – is defined as democratic principles, is a status
granted to individuals or institutions to properly run the
government and implement the rules of the law in the
society.

The Philippines is a republic with a presidential form of


government wherein power is equally divided among its
three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial.
Defining Culture, Society and Politics
Culture - Defined as the sum of an individual’s way of life, ranging from food
he or she eats , the clothes he or she wears and the house where he or she
lives.
It is divided into the ff.
Material and Non Material.
Non Material – Are the norms and Values as well as the intangible aspects of
his or her existence: Music , Dance , Poetry and other forms of expression to
showcase their existence. It also includes fashion trends, taboos manners
etc.
Society – Defined as an organized group or groups of interdependent
people, who share a common territory, Language and culture and who act
together for collective survival and well-being.
There can be no culture without the Society. So far there are no human
society that doesn’t exhibits culture.
Gender
Gender – Is the socially characteristic of being a male or a female. The
distinction of human being according to sex.
gender serves as a guide on how male or females think and act about
themselves, the way they interact with each other and how they perform
their various roles in the society.

Sex Focuses on the biological differences while Gender is culturally learned


difference between male and female.

Socioeconomic Status

Socioeconomic Status – Refers to the category of persons who have the


same economic privileges in a society. These privileges can be inherited
wealth or can be occupational status.
Three social status in the Philippines.
Upper Class – Consists of Elite Families, they are rich and most
productive in every form. It is divided into two
1. New Rich – Those who have humble beginnings and often
experienced rags to riches turn of fortune.
2. Upper Class – Made up of powerful descendants from the past,
powerful elite families
Middle Class- Composed of small industry operators, mostly
owners, managers , office workers and professionals, farm owners
with sufficient income and have a comfortable and decent living.
OFW are also included in this category.
Low Class - Low class farmer, Unemployed persons and low income
families belong to this group.
