LESSON PLAN 3: MATHS

Year Level: 4/5 Topic: 3D Shapes Date: 06/09/2018

Content Descriptor:
Y4: Compare and describe two dimensional shapes that
Strand: result from combining and splitting common shapes
Mathematics: Measurement and Geometry (Shape)
Y5: Connect three-dimensional objects with their nets and
other two-dimensional representations
Achievement Standards:
Y4: Students compare areas of regular and irregular General Capabilities:
shapes using informal units.  Numeracy
 Literacy
Y5: Students connect three-dimensional objects with  Critical and Creative Thinking
their two-dimensional representations.
Overall Lesson Aim:
Students will draw a net of a 3D shape and then construct it using playdough and straws.

Learning Objectives:
Students will draw a net for a 3D shape of their choice. They must be able to identify each aspect of the shape including
the vertices, faces and edges. They will be able to create meaning between the number of edges in a 2D net compared
to the constructed shape and use a range of mathematical terms to explain their learning.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE
12:10- Students will begin the lesson by reviewing their cube net to be able to then Resources:
12:20 draw another net of a shape of their choice. The students will identify and  Pens
label each 2D shape that will construct their 3D shape while also noting how  Lined books
many vertices, edges and faces their shape will have once constructed.  Starboard
 Ruler
12:20- The students will get a section of playdough to create a “solid” 3D shape.  Pencil
12:35 They will need to be able to identify how their shape is solid compared to  Scissors
hollow and describe how they made their shape.
 Playdough
 Straws
12:35- The students will then get another section of playdough and four straws. They
12:55 will need to cut their straws into different lengths depending on what shape
they are trying to construct. They will then use their shape to determine what
aspect of the shape both the straws and the playdough represent and present
this information verbally.

12:55- To finish the lesson students will complete a self-assessment. This will involve
1:00 them colouring in a series of boxes in either green (understand completely),
yellow (understands a little) or red (does not understand).

Assessment:
Students will produce a 3D shape using playdough and straws after drawing and labeling their ideas in their books. They
will then explain their thinking verbally once they have created their shape.

I will also give students verbal feedback throughout the lesson and ask questions to identify misconceptions and what
the students are confident with in regards to 3D shapes.
