Robocity ’18

Problem Statement:
Design an Autonomous robot that can perform tasks such as line following,
wall-following and LED blinking in minimum possible time.

GAME PLAY:
PRELIMINARY ROUND
(Only Line Following)

 In this round, Autonomous Robot has to perform only LINE FOLLOWING.


 Maximum 1 trial can be given to a team before the game begins.
 The bot has to start from the area demarcated as “START”, and the timer is
activated as soon as the bot leaves the starting area. Maximum time limit to
complete the task is “4 minutes”.
 At all the check points, the bot has to stop and blink LED 2 times and move
forward to follow the black line after the check point.

 If the bot fails to blink LED, a penalty of 10 sec will be imposed.
 In this round, the robot makes its way on the line and
turns to reach the END POINT.
 If a bot loses its way on the course, it will be placed on the correct path at the
previous successful check point with a time penalty of 10 seconds.
 The timer will stop as soon as the bot reaches the END point.

FINAL ROUND
(BOTH LINE FOLLOWER AND WALL FOLLOWING)

 This round consists of two arenas: first arena consists of wall follower while the
second arena consists of the line follower path as in preliminary round.
 First of all, the bot has to cross the wall following maze. The bot travels through a
path with walls on either side. There are turns and bends and the bot must make its
way through the path and solve it without touching the walls. Each time a bot
touches the walls, there is a penalty of 10 seconds.
 At the end of this section is Checkpoint 1. (The main checkpoint that marks the
completion of the first zone is henceforth abbreviated as CP).

 At each checkpoint, the bot must stop and flash a bright LED twice. If the bot is
unable to recognize the CP, it will be penalized with 15 seconds.
 After Checkpoint 1 the bot must change to line follower mode, and there are no
walls anymore. The robot makes its way following the line to reach END POINT
(same as preliminary round).
 The timer will stop as soon as the bot reaches the END.

Some additional rules: -


 If the bot deviates from its path, then bot has to restart from previous completed
check point.
 No two teams are allowed to use the same bot. However, they may borrow
components from other teams (like IR sensors, batteries, Ultrasonic sensor, wheels,
etc.).
 Participants can use adapters with maximum output voltage of 12V. A 220V AC
power supply will be provided at the venue.
 Hard coding is not allowed. A team may be disqualified if a hard-coded bot is found
to be used.

Some Suggestions: -
 Participants must bring their own extra batteries.
 To follow the line more accurately, participants may use more than two IR
sensors.

Specifications of the bot:


 The robot should be capable of detecting obstacles such as walls and follow a
black line on a white surface.
 The Robot must strictly be autonomous and any attempt to communicate with
the bot during run may disqualify the team.
 Dimensions of the Robot should be less than 20cm * 20cm * 15cm and
weight should not exceed 1kg.However a deviation of 5% is allowed.
 The DC potential difference between any two components on the robot must not
exceed 12V.

SCORING CRITERIA: -
o All teams will get 400 points initially.
o 50 points will be awarded for crossing a Checkpoint.
o 10-second penalties will be imposed if the bots touch any Obstacles/Wall.
o At checkpoint, the bot must stop and flash a bright LED twice. If the bot is
unable to recognize the CP, it will be penalized with 10 seconds.
o 100 points for reaching the end.
o 50 points will be deducted if the bot destroys the arena.
o Time taken in seconds will be converted to points and then added to the score
earned so far to get the final score. The conversion formula is:

Bonus points = 900- Time in seconds

o The bot with the maximum score will be announced as the Winner.
o In case of a tie, the winner will be decided based on the number of
penalties encountered.
o If none of the Robots finishes the course, then the one which covered the
longest distance in less time, will be considered the winner.
o If the robot remains immobile for significant time, then on the spot decision
will be taken by the organizers.

Certification policy: -

 Certificate of Excellence will be awarded to the Winner and 1st runner-up.


 Certificate of Appreciation will be awarded to the 2nd runner-up.

 Certificate of Participation to all the teams participating in the event.

Prizes Up for Grabs: -


 Winner gets a prize worth Rs 2000/-
 1st Runner up gets a prize worth Rs 1000/-
 2nd Runner up gets a prize worth Rs 500/-
 Team with best design gets a prize worth Rs 500/-
 A team can win only one prize.
