Week 3 Assignments ‑ Due 10/2

Mindfulness
This week, in various places, practice dropping into your body and checking the places where you know you
hold tension (maybe your forehead, your jaw, your shoulders, your stomach). Breathe deeply. Allow your breath
and your awareness to help you relax and soften all the little muscles. Try this with your eyes open or closed.
Try this in class, in the dining room, when you're walking, when you're hanging out with your friends, and
especially when you sit down to write or when you get stuck.

Reading & Forums
Rèaḋìñǧ Lìǩè a Wṝìțèṝ ❞ Read Chapter 3 ‑ "Sentences" and post to forum.
Sñõẇ Mèñ ‑ Danielle will kick off the discussion next week.

Workshop
We will be workshopping stories by Danielle, Emily, Stevie and Em next week.
Everyone, please familiarize yourselves with the Gúìḋèḽìñèṡ ḟõṝ Wõṝǩṡȟõq ] Fèèḋḇaćǩ, and then read the four
stories carefully and prepare for the workshop. If you have any questions, please email me.
Writers: this is a rare chance to have twelve intelligent readers’ minds focused on your work, so figure out
how you want to use them and what you want to learn from them.
Readers: this is a rare chance both to learn from and to help a fellow writer, thereby increasing your
beneficial writerly karma.

Writing
Group 2 will be turning in stories next week. Please bring 12 hard copies for the class, and post a digital copy to
the Moodle forum.
Writers in Groups 3 and 1 should be thinking about a new story.
Set aside some time. Open up a new document or get a fresh piece of paper and get started, even if it's just
brainstorming and making random notes about character, setting, dialogue, etc.

If you're not sure what you want to write next, then chose a vivid memory from your "I remember" list and
9/25/2018 ENG296- 01_201901: Week 3 Assignments - Due 10/2

give the memory to a fictional character, someone who may be like you, but is in some significant
way different from you, then start to write. Use the memory as a starting point, and then start making it
fictional. (See Process Journal exercise, below.)

Process Journal Writing Exercise – Words & Sentences & Psychic Distance

This is another 30 minute writing exercise to do in your process journal.
Close your eyes. Relax. Let your mind drift back to an early point in your childhood and let the memories start to
surface.
Do 5 or 10 minutes of “I Remembers”, starting each memory with the phrase, "I remember". Keep the
descriptions of the memories brief and aim to fill a page.
Now to back and choose the memory with the most energy and change the memory from the 1st person to the
3rd person. Do this twice:
The first time, use very short, declarative, simple sentences and short, 1 or 2 syllable words that a very
young child would know. Notice what kind of psychic distance this creates.
Now, rewrite the memory using more longer words and complex sentences. Again, notice how the psychic
distance changes.
Feel free to change the memory, make up details and fictionalize the character you’re writing about, who shares
your memory, but is no longer entirely you.

ALSO: If you haven't set your intentions for your writing this semester, take a moment and do so now.
What aspects of your writing do you want to work on? What challenges can you set for yourself? DON’T
FORGET TO POST THESE TO THE SANDBOX.
