TEENS 3 / READING & WRITING TEST UNIT 10 / ACTIVATE A2

1/ READING COMPREHENSION

A- Read the following article carefully.

Are the sentences RIGHT or WRONG? If there is not enough information choose “DOESN’T
SAY”.

The Big Apple

New York is the largest city in the United States, with a
population of more than 8 million. If you include the
areas around the city, the total population is about 19
million. The city has lots of famous buildings, including
very tall skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building.
Many of the skyscrapers are in the district of
Manhattan. Because so many of its businesses and services function 24 hours a day, New York
is sometimes called “The City that Never Sleeps”. New York is also known as “The Big Apple”,
though no one is sure where this name comes from.

Around 40 million tourists from all over the world visit New York every year. The most popular
tourist attractions include the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and Central Park. New York is
one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Around 170 different languages are spoken in
New York, and more than 35% of the city's people were born outside the United States. The
United Nations has its headquarters in New York, and so do many multinational companies. The
city also contains important universities, museums and theatres. Some films and TV
programmes suggest that New York is a dangerous city with a lot of crime. However, it has
now become one of the safest cities in the United States, with much less crime than in the
1980s and early 1990s.

Most New Yorkers travel around by public transport, and the city is the only one in the United
States where half of the city’s households own a car. New York's subway (underground train)
system has more than 450 stations, and functions 24 hours a day.

B- Read the following passage carefully.

A Norwegian Adventure
Calvin Gillian didn’t believe that Norway was the place for an adventure holiday. However, some
friends told him to go there and he didn’t regret it…

“I’m an extreme-sports maniac. I’ve travelled to many different countries looking for
excitement, but I didn’t expect Norway to be a good place for an extreme holiday. Tourists
usually visit Norway because of its ancient Viking history or to enjoy a relaxing holiday and go
salmon fishing in the famous fjords. But I didn’t go for salmon, I wanted adventure!

I’ve skied in some fantastic places so far but I have to say, nothing compares to skiing on a
million-year-old glacier. Svartisen (the Black Ice glacier) is amazing! The ice is not the usual
white but a deep blue colour, like the sea.

Then, there is Hunderfossen Family Park or “Troll Park”. A nice quiet day out, you probably
think. It certainly is a beautiful place, but there are lots more you can do there. For example,
you can go white-water rafting or ice-climbing. Perfect for an adventure-lover like me.

I also visited the Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo. The view from the top of the ski jump was
wonderful and the ski museum was very interesting. I wanted to try a jump but unfortunately,
it’s only for professional ski-jumpers. Anyway, one of Oslo’s top restaurants is at Holmenkollen.
So I took a break from all the adventure and tried some salmon, instead!
