Commend Maintenance Management _ Inspectio
(CMI's, Technical Proficleney Inspections (TPYs), Anny
General Inspections (AGIs), Feld Alert Status (FAS) h
spections, ete, ete, form a never ending chain. Where do
‘all get us? Is it pure harassment or does i serve a ust
purpose?
"Basically an inspection Ig conducted by, or in the nar
of, @ commander 10 examine a particular aspect of t
‘operation of his eommand, trom their section chit to
"peetions conducted in the name of General Westmorean
the Army Chief of Staff, by Department of the Army (Dé
aif members. Each commander ls responsible for t
(operations afhis commend and, in prineiple, it matters It
‘whether we talk about an NCO seetlon cet of the highe
sankeing Army officer. Each rust ake a Loo at his eomma
tosatisty himself that things are as they should be. Tru
the lower the command level, the more frequent and th
less formal the inspection.
Perhaps the greatest single value of an inspection i
‘work accomplished in preparing for ie. Can any man in tt
Group fail to appreciate how much we have improved t
‘maintenance of our equipment in preparing for the ann
(CMMI? 7 personally learned lot about maintenanee and
fam sure many others did sls
‘There is one truism about inspections that fs worth ta
king about. Every unit in the Army passes every inpeetc
given. If you put in the effrt, you Pass with flying colo
the frst me. You are. hero and the inspection is over an
done with. Tf you flunk the inspection, you and your tn
{get a black eye and, worse yet, you must put in many mot
hours preparing for the reinspection. The preparations ¢
on endlessly and, sory to say, there Is no great ered
passing the reinspection even with 100% grade. Tt
Tesson is that Its worth any amount of effort to do the J
"ght the flat time and pats the inspection with feels
(of accomplishment and the satisfaction thatthe inspectic
{3 over and done with, and dane wel
Another benefit of inspections f& that we all ean lest
‘much from an outsider taking an intimate lode at ot
operetion and giving usa ertique whic, in essenea, defin
the standards we should meet, How dificult itis for aun
to prepare for an inspection dapends almoat exclusively @
how big a gap there is between our every day standar:
snd inspection standards
‘Two messages then follow. First, set & igh standard {
your daily work and you will be sble to prepare for a
Inspection with relative ease. Secondly, put forth whateve
effort is required to insure you will pass the inspestion th
first time. The man too lazy to meet the standards the fr
time will inevitably end up putting in more total hout
setting ready for the reinspection and, to add insult
Injury, he will receive less eredit and eatiefaction than th
man who made the grade the fist Hie sround.
