Review: Sabrent USB 3.

0 To SATA/IDE Hard Drive Adapter

In this video, I reviewed an internal hard drive converter by Sabrent which makes a 2.5 inch, 3.5
inch, and 5.25 optical drive accessible via USB externally. I discussed how it functions, the
purposes people would use this, and who I think this is for. Is this something you are looking for?
Find out during this video!

If you haven't already, check out the unboxing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zMRU...

Don't worry about that molex connector. The reason you have to play around with it to connect
is because those molex pins do not line up, they are loose when they were inserted in the molex
plug. That's how they are. Its the nature of the beast. I've been repairing computers for over
25+ years and those molex plugs are that way. I also have this same Sabrent kit in my tool case
incase I need to backup and change hard drive on the spot.

+gmlasam, Molex connectors often cause problems that hard drives get blamed for. I say it's an
on going design issue that we all seem to just put up with or do not realize it exists.

I'm about to recover files from a laptop that died on me from 2005-2008ish time frame. It got a
really bad virus and it wouldn't let me boot up windows. I'm excited and glad I didn't throw it out
because I have tons of videos and pictures on there from my time in the military! It's like
opening a time capsule, lol.

Thanks for point out that there was a switch to flip on the power connector, I was freaking out
that my HDD was busted or that the Sabrent was DOA - as my Sabrent also is missing that metal
part on the molex power connector.

it in to work.

the 2 pin power adapter, plugs into the transfer cable housing.. but, I have still yet to figure out
what it is for. Instructions are terrible.

@Victor Nolton probably to power a 2.5" IDE because for those the power is included in the
44pin connector

+Victor Nolton I had the same confusion. The instructions are no help. But I think Andre is
correct. You need the 2 pin adapter only if you are connecting a 2.5 drive to the transfer housing.

Reviews should contain real world tests (transfer speeds, compatibility etc) and comparison to
manufacturer claims. This just seems a waste considering you have already done an unboxing
video.

because molex cables made today are complete shit then there old ones that are actually
stronger than the ones made today or last year I have a molex to 8 to 6 pin connector for my
GPU and I am not satisfied with it I have a lot of trouble plugging it in to my power supply.

Same trouble here. This Sabrent is useless. It works only about 10% of the time. I have no idea
why but I think it is the AWFUL quality of the Molex connectors! Or something... even the SATA
connectors seem poor and the flexibility of them is a big issue. Going to have to return this for a
refund sadly!

The plug doesn't fit well in my kit either. The pins move around too freely. When you try to
push the plug on, the pins are shoved backwards into the plug. I had to use needle nose pliers to
eventually get my plug on with the pins inserted correctly. I'm not taking the plug off
again...leaving it as is.

doesnt show up on my computer tho.. please help if u can.. i connected everything correct.. the

I wanna know if this item could be used for a cd/dvd unit, as you know modern laptops don't
have optical discs reader anymore, and in case of disaster(never occur)), with this gadget boot
from an external unit to rescue the system you know!

ive read that some of the power supplys are garbage and kill HD's ... for quick repairs i could see
this being very useful but what if u want to use it as a permanent application ie keep a HD
plugged in all day running or constantly burning DVD's all day i would imagine it would get really
hot and fail probably destroying your device

I have bought several of these: The Coolmax (which is similar to this in its pigtail design), the All
in One HDD docking station(s) - I have two, and this ... the Sabrent. Without fail, this one works
the best. I am not using it for data backup, mind you, but rather have four dozen old IDE ATA
SATA, etc. drives, 3.5, 2.5, SSD, etc. - so I needed versatility. This one works, plain and simple.
You may need to mess with the jumpers on the old drive, but it works.

funny thing i noticed with these things is that the USB cable does not properly slot into some
USB ports - it feels like it has but actually hasn't and sometimes requires some 'forcing'. If the
drive is not showing in disk management, this could be the case. I did not like the idea of forcing
the cable into the port because i did that on another PC and i damaged the port (leaving me
with one less USB port). What I did was get a USB extension cable (or you could use a multi-
adapter or something) and plug that inot the PC and the adapter into the extension - it then
worked perfectly.

Make sure to line up your pins when connecting an ide drive. There is a little tab in the Sabrent
adapter that lines up with the notch on a typical ide drive, but the tab isn't big enough to force
the pins to line up properly. I just spent the last 20 minutes trying to figure out why this thing
didn't work when I realized I was shifted over by one row of pins. Oops!

I had the same problem with the white power plug on the SATA cable set. The pin connected to
the yellow wire did not align correctly and had to be forced into place to get it to connect. The
power transformer in my unit had a bent pin as well. I was able to straighten it and the power
supply has been ok since then.

Well, that tiny power cable that you mentioned you showed to someone and you think it for the
case or as you said a fan or something (Min 4:30). Actually it is to power up the IDE HDD.
Sometimes the IDE does requires to power up! of course you cannot connect power directly to
the IDE HDD, but that tiny two pins head goes into the adaptor itself (Look at its top side and you
would see it!) and then the power pin goes tp the power adaptor of course. This way you
provide power to the IDE HDD.

I don't believe so. This was made for internal SATA hard drives to connect externally via USB. If
you try connecting an eSATA connection, where would the USB 3.0 hard drive connect? Overall, I
don't think you'll be able to do anything with eSATA.

Good enough video, but its really missing a file transfer test (speed test) to complete the review.
Now I know the device would work for what I need, but absolutely don't know if I can really
achive maximum hard drive speed through usb3...
