Chapter-1 COMPUTER NETWORKING AND TELECOMMUNICATION

1) What is communication?
Ans: The process of transferring information and exchange ideas between two or more persons using computer
is called communication.
2) What is telecommunication? Give example.
Ans: Telecommunication is the transmission of message, over significant distances, for the purpose of
communication.
Examples: Radio, Television, network, Mobile phone etc.
3) What do you mean by data communication?
Ans: The process of transferring and receiving data and information between computers is called data
communication.
Example: sending and receiving E-mail, E-Fax, using internet etc.
4) What are the elements of data communication?
Ans: The elements of data communication are: a) Sender b) Medium c) Receiver
d) Protocol
5) What is data transmission mode? List different types of data transmission modes.
Ans: The way in which data is transmitted from one location to another location is called data transmission
mode.
The different types of data transmission modes are:
a) Simplex mode b) Duplex mode

6) What is Simplex mode? Write with examples.

Ans: Simplex mode is a mode of transmission in which data flows in one direction only. Examples: TV
broadcasting, Radio, Books, Newspapers etc.

7) What is half duplex mode? Write with examples.

Ans: Half-duplex mode is the communication process in which data can be transmitted in both direction but
only in one direction at a time. Example: Walkie-talkie, fax machine, Wireless hand set |]=tc.
8) What is Full-duplex mode? Write with example.
Ans: Full-duplex mode is the communication process in which data can be transmitted in both direction
simultaneously. Example: Telephone, Mobile phone etc.
9) Differentiate between Simplex and Duplex(Full duplex)
Simplex Duplex

In simplex mode, data can be In duplex mode, data can be

transmitted only one direction. transmitted in both directions
simultaneously.

It is also called uni-directional It is also called bi-directional

mode. mode.

Examples: Radio, Newspaper, Example: Telephone, Mobile,

TV broadcasting etc, internet, etc.

10) Define Modem.

Ans: Modem is an electronic device which allows the computer to send and receive data through phone lines
by converting analog signal to digital signal and vice-versa.
The speed of modem is measured in bits per second (bps).
11) Define Bit.
Ans: Bit is the smallest unit of data communication.
12) What is bandwidth?
Ans: The amount of data that can be transmitted through a communication channel during a specified period
of time is called bandwidth.
13) What is communication media (Transmission media)? List the different types of transmission media?
Ans: The physical path through which a message travels from sender to receiver is called transmission media.
The different types of transmission media are:
a) Guided media (Wired media)
b) Unguided media (Wireless media)
14) What is Guided communication media? Give its example.
Ans: The media through which data can be transmitted from one location to another with the help of wire is
called guided communication media. Examples: Twisted pair cable, Coaxial cable and Fiber optic cable.
15) What is unguided communication media? Give its examples.
Ans: The media through which data can be transmitted from one location to other without help of wire is
called unguided communication media. Examples: Bluetooth, Macro wave, satellite, Infrared system, Wi-Fi
etc.
16) Define Computer Network. Write advantage and disadvantage of computer network.
Ans: Computer network is the interconnection of several computers so that they can communicate, share
resources and transfer data and information.
Advantages:
a) Share data and information between different computers.
b) Easily send and receive the message.
c) Share software and hardware.
d) Data computing system is faster in computer network.
e) Save time and money to exchange information.
f) Backup and recovery.

Disadvantages:

a) Computer virus spreads each mostly through the network.

b) Special technical skillful manpower is needed to operate and setup computer network.
c) Fear of misappropriation of data.
d) Cybercrime may be occurred.
e) The initial setup cost is very high.
17) List out the services of computer network.
Ans: The services of computer network:
a) Print service b) File service
c) Message service d) Application service
e) Database service f) Storage service
18) How does computer network reduce cost of operation? Explain.
Ans: Computer network enables information sharing, hardware and software sharing and provide centralized
administration and support. Thus, many resources like information, hardware, software or any other related
items can be shared with each other without having to buy new one.
Example: if any office has 100 computers under network system in four storeys, and they many need only 4
printers, one in each floor. And also they can share other devices like CD-ROM drive, scanner etc. Therefore,
it is true that computer network reduces the cost of operation.
19) What are the types of network on the basis of Area?
Ans: The types of network on the basis of area are:
a) Local Area Network
b) Metropolitan Area Network
c) Wide Area Network
20) What is LAN? Explain.

Ans: The computer network which is limited to a small area such as a room, building or a school and connects
limited number of computer is called Local Area Network. The main reasons for designing a LAN is to share
resources such as disks, printers, programs and data. It is normally owned by a single organization.

21) Define Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

Ans: The medium sized network that covers the area larger than LAN but smaller than a WAN is called
Metropolitan Area Network. It covers a larger geographical area such as an university, city, a valley, a district or
a zone. It is owned by a single or multiple organization.

22) What is Wide Area Network (WAN)?

Ans: The communication networks that spans globally and connects large number of computer around the world
is called Wide Area Network. It is the largest network in the world. Example: Internet.

23) Write the differences between LAN and WAN.

LAN WAN

It covers small area such as room or a It covers large area such as one country or
building. all over the world.

Data transmission rate is high than WAN. Data transmission rate is low than LAN.

It is owned by a single or organization. It is owned by multiple organization.
