Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key
Questions):

Explain to the students that Jesus gave his followers the

Eucharist. As Jesus’ followers receive him in Holy
Communion, Jesus strengthens them to lead good lives.

People at times find it difficult to develop their qualities

sufficiently to behave in ways that always show these
qualities. There are times when they find it hard to be:

• kind, instead of ignoring or treating people unkindly

• courageous, instead of going along with peers and others

who want them to do what they know to be wrong

• honest, instead of taking or not returning what belongs to

others, or telling lies

• compassionate, instead of ignoring, bullying or picking on

people who, for example, feel sad

People can find it hard to develop and to express their inner

good qualities because of strong emotions, such as anger,
resentment, fear or desire for what does not belong to them.
They can find it hard to overcome bad habits, such as lying
or picking on people.
To help his followers to develop and to express their inner
good qualities so that, increasingly, they show goodness in
these special ways, Jesus gave them the Eucharist. As they
receive him in Holy Communion, Jesus strengthens
goodness within them. As their good qualities grow
stronger, they find it easier to overcome selfishness and
temptations to speak or act in ways that are unkind,
dishonest or that ignore others in need.
