Power Transformer & Feeder Protection

Performance Report (Dec’12-Jan’13)

Comparative results of selected 96 feeders and 32 Power Trafos, after installation & activation of
protections was analyzed. A comparison of same period tripping performance of last year with current
year (Dec-Jan) is tabulated below.

- Improvement (reduction in tripping)
- Deterioration (increase in tripping)
Analysis:
 At Grids, substantial reduction (57%) in power transformer tripping observed, due to activation
& coordination between feeder relay and Transformer incomer protection relay.
 Improvement in feeder tripping (18%) has also been observed as coordination between feeder
and S/S protection revived after installation of VCBs at 39 S/S. These tripping are expected to
reduce further in upcoming months after completion of project. However, the scope of work is
limited due to the insufficient number of VCB’s available.

Weekly Progress Report (28th Jan -3rd Feb’13)

Overall 92.5% assigned task for installing protections at Power Trafo at Grids and 83% protection
installation & setting at Sub-stations has been completed. The project is ahead of schedule and shall be
completed well within time. The coordination and setting of relays at substation with Grid feeders is
under constant monitoring to assess their impact on trafo trippings.

Analysis:
 R-II (Society) & R-III have completed S/S planned for phase I on which VCBs were to be installed.
 R-I is lagging behind as only 2 S/S out of 7 planned have been installed with VCBs , so far.
Power Transformer & Feeder Protection
Weekly Progress Report (21st-27th Jan’13)
Overall 89% assigned task for installing protections at Power Trafo at Grids and 72% protection
installation & setting at Sub-stations has been completed. The project is ahead of schedule and shall be
completed well within time. The coordination and setting of relays at substation with Grid feeders is
under constant monitoring to assess their impact on trafo trippings.

Analysis:
Protections installed at selected S/S’s shall ensure tripping due to fault is arrested at the S/S, without
effecting the Feeder/power trafo at grid. The scope of work is limited due to the insufficient number of
VCB’s available. Two months (Dec/Jan) tripping performance shall be shared at the end of Jan ’13,
which shall show results of the undertaken project & guide future course of action.
