ELEMENTS
(Identify what is asked for in each number)
1. Main characters
Ryohei: I think Ryohei is a protagonist because he didn’t do anything wrong. He was just a
little boy who likes Flatcar.
2. Setting
- Edge of town (When Ryohei watch the labourers transport the dirt from flatcar)
- Tangerine orchard, Bamboo grove, Sea (places where Ryohei passed by)
- Teahouse (When the flatcar had stopped)
- Home (When Ryohei finally arrived at home in the evening)
3. Plot Summary
There was a little boy who likes flatcar and had a chance to travel on it. However, he had
traveled too far from his home and regret his decision then he returned to his parents in the
evening.
4. Type of Conflict
In this short story, the type of conflict is a character against himself. The reason why I
think like this is because Ryohei, at first, he likes to ride on the flatcar, but when he travel
too far from his home, he struggle to decide whether he should go back home or continue
to travel.
In my opinion, I think that this story wants to teach the readers to think before they act
and ignore the things that are wrong because if you don’t, there will be a lots of trouble.
6. POINT OF VIEW
Flatcar used 3rd point of view(limited) because the narrator is not a character, the
narrator talks about a character.
PLOT LINE
(BRIEFLY explain what is asked for in each number)
1. EXPOSITION
A. How do the characters’ physical, emotional, and mental characteristics affect the other parts of
the story?
Ryohei’s physical characteristic affects the part of the story when he had to push the flatcar along
the track. His emotional and mental affect most of the story because at first, the story make the
reader believe that Ryohei likes the flatcar. However, in the end, the story twist that Ryohei
dislikes the flatcar because he has to runs home alone in the evening.
B. Do you think that setting is important in other parts of the story? Why or Why not?
The setting is very important because the setting is the things that will cause when and where in
the story. How the story will be in the next scene.
C. Identify ONE figure of speech or idiom used by the writer in this part of the plot, and explain its
meaning.
In this short story, the author used imagery in this “The quivering flatcar dancing under his feet”
part, which is a figure of speech. The author used it to make the reader imagine when the flatcar
is shaking.
