As technology continues to evolve and change, we

mobile-connected ways. Consequently, the va-
riety and sheer number of mobile business op-
portunities out there have given rise to a new
crop of savvy global entrepreneurs.
Just perform a quick search online and you’ll find
everything from pet grooming and dog walking
services, to residential and commercial cleaning,
catering and food trucks, professional organiz-
ing, personal shopping and moving services all
offered by, and available to, people on the go.
If you’ve already opened a mobile-based busi-
ness, or are thinking about starting one, the fu-
ture success of your enterprise must be skillfully
linked to technology in order to meet the de-
mands of the “I want it yesterday” world we live in.

any mobile business. Before letting people know
about you, you need to know about them by creat-
ing a clearly defined target audience to whom you

these targets are not specific enough. You have to
carefully and specifically identify a niche market(s)
— an important factor that will play a significant
role in the success or failure of your business.

insights into the gender, age, geographic loca-
tion, and more about your customers, which
could help identify others that may want what

expensive items or services? Does there appear
to be a specific time of year that certain items
sell or that customers come to you for service?
Considerations like these may also provide in-
sights into your target market.
Following these steps to carefully research and
identify your target market will go a long way in
helping you speak to those potential customers,
while also maximizing your overall outreach ef-
forts, marketing dollars, and of course, the all-im-
portant Return on Investment (ROI).

he term “gig economy” was coined
around 2009 during the Great Reces-
sion, to address the growing number
of people making or supplementing their liv-
ing through a series of part-time, freelance or
consulting engagements. During the econom-
ic downturn, gigs were a way of making extra
money, but over the last ten years it has become
a career path that many choose in order to not
just make a living but be their own bosses.
Many companies are even shifting their own
structures to incorporate more contractors
to keep their overhead costs lower. Remote
work tools and the increasingly paperless pro-
cesses of most organizations have helped make
this arrangement more practical for workers
and managers.
The proliferation of online sites and mobile
applications designed to facilitate contract
employment has contributed to the growth of
the gig economy as well. Uber was one of the
pioneers, quickly followed by other ridesharing

So, with contracting becoming more of a norm

for success in an industry that can be dog-eat-
dog. In just two years, artists have already
been creating a buzz including Jenkins-Smith’s
17-year-old son, Cyrus, who has worked with
heavy-hitting producers (“some of the same
producers Migos, Gucci, and T.I. use,” she add-
ed proudly) and opened for Cardi B late last
year. She is committed to giving young artists
a head-start.
The ambitious entrepreneur started out in At-
lanta, working from her home office looking
for artists and creating/developing her business
plan for her new record label. She knew that she
was going to have to create an amazing brand
and have a pure key messaging to help mold
these new artists into well-respected brands.
She later branched out to the west coast to re-
connect with some of her former colleagues
in the entertainment business. She did a lot of
talent scouting and got some help from R&B
legend Keith Sweat to guide her in the way she
should go with the business. He also signed on
as the President of Young Millennium Records,
along with his son being an artist.
Failure is not the alternative to success. It’s
something to be avoided, but it’s also only a
temporary setback on a bigger, more signifi-
cant course. Everybody encounters failure at
one point or another. What truly matters is
how you react to and learn from that failure.
Jenkins-Smith has taken every failure she en-
countered and turned it into triumph. People
you have helped in the past will not always be
willing to return the favor when needed, she
quickly learned. The golden rule is big in her
life and she thought if by just treating people

in return. Well she learned the hard way that
even though you may get a blessing, it may not
always be from those whom you have blessed.
With building a successful business, you have
to have an eager team behind you that believes
in your vision and wants your brand to succeed.
Jenkins-Smith’s advice for emerging CEOs is to
listen to your employees, even if you don’t make
your decisions based off of what they say. Learn
what their gripes are and their complaints, and
balance them out with what makes them happy.
Find their skills and try to build the position
around those. Don’t have people continue to do
what they are not good at. Everyone is happi-
er that way and employees will do a better job
once they know you are taking notice of their
strengths and using them to the company’s ad-
vantage. And smile, as it never hurts to smile.

Cuddy says that the biggest challenge he’s had to
overcome in launching his business (like all busi-
nesses starting out) was finance. He was lucky
to have and continue to have another profitable
business that allowed them to prop up the Field
toy business during the crucial launch phase. The
Field toy now stands on its own two feet and all
funds are reinvested for business development
and growth. “Unlike other small businesses, we
retain 100% equity in the business,” Cuddy says.
“This has allowed us to move from initial launch
stage back in September 2015 to market expan-
sion in a relatively short period of time. We are in
total control of our business and where it moves
to next. While this is stressful at times I wouldn’t
have it any other way!”
Cuddy introduced The Field toy to the mar-
ket just three years ago and they’re already on
their way of achieving their goal of becoming
the number one farming toy for children aged
3+. Their Field toys are also now available in
America as of this September. To market The
Field, Cuddy says that direct marketing via
social media has been effective. “We utilize
our social media platforms to speak directly
to consumers and grow our audience that loves

or clock on or off from. This suits me and how
I operate. It doesn’t suit everyone and that’s
why I feel you are either born an entrepreneur
or not.”
According to Cuddy, launching The Field has
been his greatest business achievement thus
far. “I am extremely proud we have created a

tional and creative toy products which have not
been created before anywhere in the world!”
