Short Story Title: poison

Directions: Read the short story given to you. Complete the entire table for ELEMENTS; however, for
the PLOT LINE, your teacher will assign ONE part of the plot for you to analyze. In your plot line
analysis, ensure to explain in details what is asked for. Please edit your work before submission.
Upload your analysis in your individual GDrive folder.

ELEMENTS
(Identify what is asked for in each number)

1. Main characters
Timber, Harry(The man who said there is a snake on his stomach) and Ganderbai
(identify the roles of the characters like how you identified Harry)
protagonist? antagonist?

2. Setting
Place- At the Timber and Harry’s house and in the room of Harry’s.
When- The situation occurs around midnight.

3. Plot Summary
Harry said there was a krait on his stomach then Timber was trying to help by calling the doctor
but in the end there wasn’t. (what?)

4. Type of Conflict
It is “ Man versus self” due to in the end of the story he just panic by himself there was no krait on
his stomach so he just thought by himself or else he just awoke from dreaming. (what do you
mean? how else is the ‘man vs. self’ shown in the story?)

5. Theme / Moral (lesson)

Accept the truth If you are actually wrong, don’t blame others. (like in what situation?)

6. POINT OF VIEW

First Point Of View: Characters narrating the story and dialogue.

PLOT LINE
(BRIEFLY explain what is asked for in each number)

1. EXPOSITION
A. How do the characters’ physical, emotional, and mental characteristics affect the other parts of
the story?

- Characteristics of the characters in this story are very important for the story because Harry’s
characteristic is a main thing for the story because if this story doesn’t have a characteristic of
Harry’s so there would be nothing (your answer is philosophical; identify which characteristics
would you like to elaborate and make connection with)

B. Do you think that setting is important in other parts of the story? Why or Why not?

-The place for this story is also important too, due to the situation happened on the bed and he
couldn’t move so it can’t take place outside the bed (how is this so?)

C. Identify ONE figure of speech or idiom used by the writer in this part of the plot, and explain its
meaning.

- I can’t find any idioms and figures of speech in the exposition of the story so I use the
word “bloody” instead. Bloody is a british common word that intensifies a noun, usually
one with negative meaning such as “Hours and bloody hours and hours”.
(there are figures of speech used by the writer)

ELEMENTS
(Identify what is asked for in each number)

7. Main characters
•Timber- The person who saw Harry was lying on the bed and called a doctor for Harry so I think
he is a protagonist.
•Harry-The man who said there was a snake on his stomach. I’m not sure that he is an antagonist
or not because he didn’t do any bad things and I can’t judge him just because he taught there was
a krait on his stomach.
•Ganderbai- He is a doctor who helped Harry in removing a krait from his stomach even though
there was no krait on Harry’s stomach. He is a protagonist because he helped Harry.

8. Setting
Place- At the Harry’s house and in the room of Harry’s.
When- The situation occurs around midnight.

9. Plot Summary
Harry said there was a krait on his stomach then Timber was trying to help by calling the doctor
but in the end there was no krait in the situation.

10. Type of Conflict

It is “ Man versus self” due to in the end of the story he just imagined by himself, there was no
krait on his stomach so in my opinion I think that he dreamt about a krait so when he woke up he
thought that it was real.

11. Theme / Moral (lesson)

When you blame and criticize others, you are avoiding some truths about yourself like the
situation that there was no krait on his stomach he didn’t accept about his mistake or his lie.
12. POINT OF VIEW

First Point Of View: Characters narrating the story and dialogue.

PLOT LINE
(BRIEFLY explain what is asked for in each number)

1. EXPOSITION
A. How do the characters’ physical, emotional, and mental characteristics affect the other parts of
the story?

-Characteristics of the characters for the story are very important especially Harry’s characteristic.
If Harry didn’t imagine about the krait the story would be very boring. (weak analysis)

B. Do you think that setting is important in other parts of the story? Why or Why not?

-Setting for this story is very important because the situation needs to be in the room
due to the characters need to lay on the bed and stay stationary or else the story
wouldn’t be happened. (weak reasoning)

The figure of
speech that the writer used was imagery like in “His whole face was wet and the pillow
around his head was sodden with moisture” it means that Harry was sweating so hard.
