7. An open cylindrical container can hold 16 𝑚3 of rice. If the radius of the container is x

m and its height is y m, show that 𝑦 = 𝜋𝑥 2 and find the surface area of the container in
terms of x.
A conical cover of slant height 2x m is placed on top of the container to form a silo as
shown in Figure 1 below.

Given that the cost per unit area of the cylindrical container is p ringgit per square
metre. If the cost per unit area of the cover is 50% more than the cost per unit area of
the cylindrical container, show that the total cost, C, of the silo is

Hence, show that the total cost, C, is minimum when = √𝜋 . [15 marks]

8. Two iterations suggested to estimate a root of the equation 𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 + 1 = 0 are

1
𝑥𝑛+1 = 5 (𝑥𝑛3 + 1), 𝑥𝑛+1 = 3√5𝑥𝑛 − 1.

(a) Show that the equation 𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 + 1 = 0 has a root between 0 and 1.

(b) Using 𝑥0 = 0.5, show that one of the iterations converges to the root whereas the
other does not.
(c) Use the iteration which converges to the root to determine the root correct to three
decimal places. [15 marks]
