Cacti & Succulents
Light
Indoors, most cacti & succulents prefer the brightest light possible; this usually means a South or
West-facing window. If these plants receive too much light, scarring will appear on the leaves.
Plants which receive too little light become etiolated, growing lankier and towards the light.
Watering
The leading cause of domestic plant death is overwatering. Most succulents/cacti prefer to be
watered only once soil has dried out completely. Overwatered succulents drop leaves, become
mushy and turn black at the base.
Propagation
Most succulents and cacti can be propagated by cuttings. For succulents, cut the leaf at the base
and simply drop the leaf onto potting media. It will root and produce a plantlet, as the mother
leaf shrivels.
Pests
The most devastating and common pest which affects succulents are mealy bugs. The presence
of mealy bugs is indicated by a opaque white cotton-like substance at the base of leaves. Mealy
bugs can be controlled by persistently spraying a solution of water and either neem oil or
rubbing alcohol on the leaves. Be sure to spray in the morning or evening, or the droplets may
burn the plant when exposed to light.
Media
Succulents & cacti require well draining media. Specialized potting soil mixes for cacti &
succulents can usually be found at garden supply stores. Coarse perlite and turface can be
ordered online; these are favorites of desert plant collectors who mix their own soils.
Drainage pots
The most important characteristic of pots for succulents is drainage. All pots should have a
drainage hole. Holes in ceramic or glass pots can be drilled with a regular hand drill and a
diamond drill bit. The second most important pot factor is size. Over-potting a plant can cause
overwatering. Pots should only extend a couple inches around the root zone. Many desert plants
are slow-growing and likely require a pot similarly sized to the pot they came home in.

Indoor Tropical Plants
Watering
The leading cause of domestic plant death is overwatering. Overwatered plants will have a heavy
pot, slightly wilted or yellow leaves, burnt leaf tips, and mushiness of the stem. Under-watered
plants will wilt dramatically and individual leaves will turn yellow or crispy.
Pests
The most common pest is spider mites. The presence of spider mites is indicated by the
presence of fine transparent webs, and subtle yellow spots on leaves. Remove spider mites by
periodically spraying the foliage of plants with soapy water.
Potting
Use a well-draining potting soil rich in organic matter. Typical potting soils available at gardening
centers will do. Use a pot with a drainage hole, or drill one yourself using a diamond drill bit.
Another option is to simply keep the plant in its plastic pot, and set it inside of the ceramic pot
without drainage, removing the plant to water it occasionally. Be careful not to overpot, as
overpotting results in overwatering. Plants want to be repotted once they become rootbound,
when roots are growing out of the drainage holes. When repotting, only increase the pot size by
approximately 2-4 inches.
Propagation by Cutting
Some plants can be propagated by cuttings. Identify a segment of the plant with at least 2 nodes
and 1 leaf. Using a sharp clean cutting tool, cut at the node of the segment to separate it from
the parent plant. Remove excess leaves so there is only one leaf. Optionally, dip the end of the
cutting in rooting hormone. Stick the end of the cutting into moist potting media, ideally perlite
and sand. Place a plastic bag over the potted cutting to maintain humidity. Water the cutting
occasionally to prevent it from drying out.

In the absence of compost treatments, use an organic fertilizer. Fertilizer

The USDA classifies regions according to first and last frost
dates. When selecting appropriate landscape plants for the
region, their zone classification should be considered. Central
Texas is categorized as zone 8b. Plants with a minimum zone
range above this number should be kept in pots so they can be
