Video Editing - Lesson 1

A) Introduction
 Video editing software (digital video), e.g. Adobe Premiere, Ulead Video Studio, PowerDirector
 Windows Live Movie Maker (Windows Vista/7/8) – Free!
 Common functions in video editing software: importing movie (audio/pictures), trimming video
clips, transitions effect, video effects, simple audio effects, subtitles, exporting movie, etc.

B) Workflow of Making a Video


Shooting video(s) by camera

Importing video(s) to computer

Editing the new video


(usually composed of more than 1 video clip)

Exporting the video as a single video file


(e.g. .mpg, .avi, . wmv)
C) Interface

D) Tutorial
 The following tutorials introduce the major features of Windows Live Movie Maker.
 Student may watch the video tutorial provided and finish the task at the same time.
 Get the source video files and start the tutorial!

Tutorial 1A – Importing videos (Watch: tutorial1a)


 This allows us to import video into the project

Tutorial 1B – Adding title (標題) (Watch: tutorial1b)


 This add a title at the beginning of the movie.
 You may also adjust the appearance of the text.

Tutorial 1C – Adding caption (字幕) and credits (參與名單)

Tutorial 1D – Adding music and setting video volumes (Watch: tutorial1d)


 Background music can be added to the video
 The video volumes can be also be adjusted.

 The unwanted part of video can be trimmed away.
 The video speed can be decreased or increased.

 Export (save) the video as a .wmv file.
 Different resolutions can be selected. However, the quality is determined by the source
resolution. (e.g. If the source video is of 352x288 resolution, the quality will not be improved
even though 1920 x 1080 is specified as output resolution)

1. What kinds of files are supported by Windows Live Movie Maker?

Video files:
.asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm,
and .wmv

2. Will the original video files be changed after video editing?

No!! The orginal video files will NOT be changed even it has been imported and edited. They
are only referenced by the software.

3. Can I duplicate the same video clips in one project?

Yes! You can do that. We will have such practice in later sections.

4. What should I do if I cannot finish the editing at once?

Save the project as (.wlmp file) and open it later.
