Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). What are the
major knowledge areas of PMBOK?

The Project Management Body of Knowledge is a set of standard terminology and

guidelines (a body of knowledge) for project management. The body of knowledge evolves
over time and is presented in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge
There are ten major knowledge areas which are
• project integration management,
• Project scope management,
• project time management,
• Project cost management,
• Project quality management,
• Project human resource management,
• Project communications management,
• Project rick management,
• project procurement management,
• project steak holders management.
Every project needs the 5 Process Groups. These are the second large piece of the
foundation of the PMBOK Guide. The Process Groups are:

Initiating: These procedures help you to characterize another piece of work – either an
entire new project or the stage you are going to start. They guarantee you have authority to
continue.

Planning: These processes help you define objectives and scope out the work to be
done. They also encompass all the work around planning and scheduling tasks. Again, they
can cover a complete project or just the phase you are working on right now. Or you might
be closing one phase and planning the next in parallel.

Executing: You do these procedures as you complete your venture assignments. This is
the 'conveyance' some portion of venture administration, where the primary action
happens and you make the items.
Monitoring and Controlling: These procedures let you track the work that is
being done, audit and write about it. They additionally cover what happens when you
discover the undertaking isn't following the concurred design, so change administration
falls into this Process Group. You'll run these procedures close by those in the Executing
Group (essentially, however nearby alternate Groups as well) so you screen as you go.
Closing: At long last, these procedures let you conclude every one of the errands in
alternate Groups when you come to the heart of the matter to close the undertaking or
stage. It would be nice if your project walked through each of these Groups in a neat, linear
order. That doesn’t happen in real life. As you can see above, you’ll spend time in each
Process Group and then maybe go round again during the next phase. Monitoring and
Controlling happens from Day 1 it ramps while the project is in the delivery phases but it
goes on throughout. You can close a particular activity at any point, not just at the end of
the project.

The Process Groups are not the same thing as a project life cycle.

tell you about the nature and future of project management
The project success criteria need to be changed to include the concept of value, wealth, and
business benefits as well and innovation and creativity. The site states “Nearly 75% of
executives believe their company's performance could improve if their employees gained
certain key skills*.
One of these critical skills—project management…”
This shows us that the field will continue to grow more and more since executives see the
benefits of having a project management expert.
Project Management is a relatively old profession. Some say it is not really a profession,
but more of a line of work or collection of activities. Others say it is a discipline, a business
practice that is somewhat challenged in the complex world of business.

20th century project management has been a mostly tactical endeavor, focusing mostly on
the technical tools of the trade such as work breakdown schedules, earned value, and Gantt
charts to gauge progress. Program and Portfolio Management are practiced in most
organizations but are experiencing difficulties achieving optimal performance. Project
Management Offices (PMOs) have come and gone regularly because it is difficult to
demonstrate the value of the group. It is clear, the call to action is that we need to transform
project management practices fast to meet the challenges of the 21st century. While some
project managers work at the strategic level today driving business value, the focus of the
vast majority of the PM practitioners has been mostly:
Management vs. Leadership
Tactical orientation vs. systems thinking
Project and requirements management vs. complexity management
Linear vs. adaptive
Business as usual vs. innovation
Project outcomes vs. business/customer value

SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS
Intelligent design
Today's communities are using more electrical power than ever before, causing frequent
blackouts and breakdowns in the trusted systems that electrical utilities worldwide have
long relied on. Fortunately, there is a solution; unfortunately, this solution--smart grids-
-is one that electrical utility companies currently do not trust, mainly because the
solution lacks clear standards and roadmaps for delivering reliable service. This article
discusses how electrical utility companies can--and why they should--switch to smart
grids. It explains the purpose of switching to a smart grid and the opportunities available
to project managers in the booming clean energy industry. It describes how utility
companies can establish a smart grid, noting processes that can help project managers
effectively manage such an effort. It notes the challenges that Latin American electrical
utilities encounter when attempting to introduce a smart grid. It then overviews the
major concerns in using smart grids, looking at those concer

Underwater energy
About 60 meters (197 feet) below the surface of Lake Ontario, Canada, six giant balloons
are storing energy -- and potentially reducing Toronto's reliance on fossil fuels. The
balloon project sponsored by Canadian energy startup Hydrostor Inc. converts electrical
energy into compressed air and sends it through a 2.5-kilometer (1.6-mile) pipe
underwater to the coated-nylon balloons. The six three-story balloons, anchored by 30
straps apiece, together take up the equivalent of a basketball court

Lighting the way

Engineering manager Sam Alkhtib, PMP, coordinates projects for Cupertino Electric
Inc., in San Francisco, CA. He discusses the logistics of integrating electrical engineering
systems into a large-scale condo development project and the demands of new
sustainability regular.

Nuclear plant delays challenge project management

The growing demands for electric power have turned attention to nuclear
energy. At the present time, 55 nuclear plants are under construction. Over a
hundred more are on order, and new announcements are made frequently.
Despite a number of environmental and safety problems which need to be
overcome by the electrical power industry, nuclear plant construction will
require increasing management talents over the next decade. It will also
require solutions to some of the greatest challenges faced by project
management.
Installing a smart grid is a difficult process: The electrical utility
company must not only educate its employees and develop and define
standards and processes for running its operations, it must also manage
stakeholders and provide valuable information about the advantages of
optimizing their electrical use via the smart grid.
