found in any dictionary. This is because the rules of international military and
diplomatic protocol require that all military ranks must be translated in
accordance with the title of the corresponding rank of the precise military
counterpart in the other country, which is a function of the number of stars,
stripes and other insignia on each officer's uniform. In this regard, the words
that constitute the title associated with each officer's rank are almost irrelevant
in determining the correct translation, a fact that confuses many otherwise
experienced translators. Thus international rules of protocol require some
translations that are quite counter-intuitive, especially among the flag officer
ranks. Please see, for example, the translations listed below for the Army and
Air Force Generals, as well as for all Marine Corps officers above the rank of
