Positive aspects of speech

Synopsis

The way in which believers speak should reflect their calling as Christians. Christian speech should be
sincere, godly and honouring to God.

Ps 19:14

Psalm 19:14 (HCSB) — 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my
heart be acceptable to You, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 17:3 (HCSB) — 3 You have tested my heart; You have examined me at night.

tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my

Eph 4:29–31

Ephesians 4:29–31 (HCSB) — 29 No foul language is to come from your mouth, but
only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those
who hear. 30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the
day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must

Proverbs 4:24 (HCSB) — 24 Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don’t let
your lips talk deviously.
Ecclesiastes 5:6 (HCSB) — 6 Do not let your mouth bring guilt on you, and do not
say in the presence of the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be
angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?

Ephesians 5:4 (HCSB) — 4 Coarse and foolish talking or crude joking are not
suitable, but rather giving thanks.

Colossians 3:8–10 (HCSB) — 8 But now you must also put away all the following:
anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to

believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the
mouth, resulting in salvation.

Matthew 10:32–33 (HCSB) — 32 “Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge Me

Characteristics of godly speech in relation to others

It is gentle, gracious and tactful

Colossians 4:6 (HCSB) — 6 Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with
salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.

Judges 8:1–3 (HCSB) — 1 The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you done

to you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? 3 God
handed over to you Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian. What was I able to
do compared to you?” When he said this, their anger against him subsided.

Proverbs 10:32 (HCSB) — 32 The lips of the righteous know what is appropriate,
but the mouth of the wicked, only what is perverse.

Proverbs 15:1 (HCSB) — 1 A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs
up wrath.

Proverbs 16:24 (HCSB) — 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb: sweet to the taste
and health to the body.

Ecclesiastes 10:12 (HCSB) — 12 The words from the mouth of a wise man are
gracious, but the lips of a fool consume him.

Daniel 2:14–16 (HCSB) — 14 Then Daniel responded with tact and discretion to
Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, who had gone out to execute the wise
men of Babylon. 15 He asked Arioch, the king’s officer, “Why is the decree from the

and asked the king to give him some time, so that he could give the king the

1 Corinthians 4:13 (HCSB) — 13 when we are slandered, we respond graciously.

protect you; 25 may Yahweh make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26
