Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I can address Universal Design for Learning principles to extend and support the learning for all students by
providing multiple means of representation and engagement. I will provide multiple means of representation
by providing the students with a narrated PowerPoint, visual images, written work, and verbal
communication. I will provide multiple means of engagement by having the students complete different tasks
during the lesson. This way, they are not working on one thing for the duration of the lesson. This also will
help all students in my class because I know some students will not be able to complete one task during the
entire lesson.

Lesson idea implementation:

Before we start the lesson, I will ask my students if they know the difference between upper and lowercase
letters. I will give them time to answer and then I will tell them that today we will be learning the difference
between upper and lower-case letters. I will tell them that they will be able to recognize and name all upper
and lowercase letters by the end of the lesson. As I address the standard, I will show my students the
narrated PowerPoint that I have made of the entire alphabet. The PowerPoint displays all upper and lower-
case letters of the alphabet. The students will hear me say each letter out loud and I will give them an
example of a word that starts with that letter.

After I show the PowerPoint to my students, I will have them practice writing their upper and lowercase
letters on paper. I will walk around the classroom making sure that my students are writing their upper and
lower-case letters correctly on their sheet of paper. They will use the paper that has the dotted line in the
middle of it so that it is easy for them to make their big and small letters. After they have written their letters,
I will have my students practice saying the letters they have written down. Once they have practiced saying

their letters out loud, I will show my students the upper and lower-case letters on the SmartBoard to see if
they are able to recognize them. This lesson should take approximately an hour to complete. I will assess
student learning in three different ways: 1.) if they are able to copy all letters of the alphabet in upper and
lower-case letters on their paper, 2.) if they are able to correctly pronounce their letters out loud, and 3.) if
the students are able to recognize the upper and lower-case letters of the alphabet when I show them.

I will use the final product to differentiate learning by figuring out which students need re-teaching. I will get
my students to a higher level of learning by having them recognize letters in a sentence that need to be either
upper or lower case. I will conclude the lesson by going over what an upper-case letter is and what a lower-
case letter is and when we use them. I will provide feedback to my students by telling them if their work is
correct and if not, we will go over what they did wrong together.

Reflective Practice:
The activities that I have created could impact student learning in a positive way. I know that no two students
learn the same way. In this lesson, I have verbal and auditory communication, along with visuals, and written
work. I believe this lesson helps all student learning. To extend this lesson, I would have my students pick a
letter of the alphabet that is their favorite. They would paint the upper and lower-case letter on a piece of
white computer paper. Once they painted the upper and lower-case letter, they would glue it on construction
paper. I would also give them an assignment to complete. I would have pictures like apples and bananas and
have the students match what letter the picture starts with. I could use technology to do so. Students could
come up to the SmartBoard and draw the letter or drag the picture to the letter that it starts with.
