Last week I talked to one of our professional artist judges, David Curtis, about what makes an award-winning painting in our exhibition. Whether painted on-site from life or from a photograph, the most successful work always shows first and foremost good drawing skills then a deftness of brush and what David calls the bravura performance. Keep submitting those large-scale paintings if that’s what you do best, but we are also looking for smaller, more high-risk paintings that ‘sing off the walls’ as he puts it. You'll find both types of work in this year's winning entries.
