Description
WOW... What an eye opener.
I have done parent teacher interviews a few times
(and even sat in on ILP meetings), but being at a
private school was a different experience.
The parents were in some cases very demanding
and wanting more and more from teachers. The
teachers handled this very well and if they claimed
that the student in question (for example) was being
disruptive in class that they showed evidence or had
clear examples of when and where this takes place.
I also learnt that if you put an emotional twist on this
news IE "im worried about ... because of his
disruptive behaviour", it means that the parents are
more likely to be supportive because it shows that
you as a teacher care about their child. But only to
do this when it is truthful.

I was given the opportunity throughout the night to

speak to the parents of my two commerce classes
(years 9 and 10) and speak to their parents about
how their child was travelling in the class. I spoke to
some parents about:-

1. Work - content being covered and why;

2. Justification of studying commerce and how it is
important for future studies and life;
3. How their child was going - with the content;
4. Where their child sits (physically) in the class and
if this needs to be changed to enhance the learning;
5. When parents asked what they could do to help
with this subject I suggested that they get the
student to download the BBC news app on their

phone and maybe go through some world news

items every night or morning for 5 or so minutes. It
means that they can bring in some real world issues
into our discussion.

Most parents were actually really nice when

speaking to me about the student. I am not sure if
this is due to them being told about me being a
student myself or not.
I was pleasantly surprised when a few parents also
said that their child had come home on a few
occasions and specifically mentioned that they have
been loving my classes on "The Law in action".
I discussed these comments with my supervisor who
said that it is because the students can clearly see
that I have a passion for this topic and it shows.
