The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is a global organization of more than 37,000

Society’s members use risk-based approaches to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses.

Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA)


The Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA) is a not-for-profit trade association serving the fire
alarm and smoke detection industry. AFAA believes in a balanced approach, using the correct

passive fire protection through proper building materials.

National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA)

KITCHEN HOOD SYSTEMS – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

The cooking line is the leading cause of all restaurant building


fires, which is why being prepared and having a proper
restaurant fire suppression system is crucial. According to
studies conducted by the NFPA, leading types of equipment
involved in restaurant building fires include deep fryers and
ranges.

When deciding on the right safety equipment and fire


suppression system for your restaurant’s kitchen, keep in
mind the areas where fires are most likely to occur. Due to
their importance, Fire and Safety Code requires that some
commercial properties have them installed.

Once a Kitchen Hood suppression system is required, it has to


be installed and maintained as per NFPA 17A: Standard for
Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems and NFPA 96: Standard
for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial
Cooking Operations.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Fire extinguishers are designed to release a chemical agent that can deplete fires in their incipient
stage. Due to their importance, every commercial property is required to have atleast one, according
to the TCI Building Code.

Once you are required to have an extinguisher, you must ensure that it is Inspected and Maintained
in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 10 – Standard for Portable Fire
Extinguishers, current edition.

Bi-Annual (6-Monthly) External Examination

 Reference – Turks & Caicos Islands Fire & Rescue Service General Policy

A bi-annual (6 months) external visual examination of all fire extinguishers shall be made to
detect obvious physical damage, corrosion, or nozzle blockage to verify that the operating
instructions are present. This examination must be performed by certified, trained and
approved individuals.

Six-Year Examination

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 7.3.6

Every six (6) years, stored-pressure fire extinguishers that require a twelve (12) year hydrostatic
test shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable internal and external examination
procedures as detailed in the manufactures service manual. This examination must be
performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

Extinguisher Recharging

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 7.8

All rechargeable-type fire extinguishers shall be recharged after any use or when the need is
indicated by an inspection or servicing. Recharging ensures that the extinguishers is ready to
be used in the event of an emergency. This process must be performed by certified, trained
and approved individuals.

Hydrostatic Testing

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 8.1

Pressure vessels used as fire extinguishers shall be hydrostatically tested in accordance with
this chapter. This process must be performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

According to the National Fire Protection Association
