economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards.

American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP)

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is a global organization of more than 37,000
occupational safety and health (OSH) professional members who manage, supervise, research
and consult on work-related OSH concerns in all industries, government and education. The
Society’s members use risk-based approaches to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses.

Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA)

The Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA) is a not-for-profit trade association serving the fire
alarm and smoke detection industry. AFAA believes in a balanced approach, using the correct
technology for the application whether it is smoke detectors, fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers or
passive fire protection through proper building materials.

National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA)

For over a century, the National Fire Sprinkler Association has been advocating for the
widespread acceptance of fire sprinkler systems throughout the United States. The NFSA works
closely with lawmakers to pass legislation that will make homes and businesses safer, media
appearances, and live fire sprinkler demonstrations.

National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED)

The National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED) is a trade association serving
companies that sell, distribute, and service fire equipment. Nearly all of our members sell and
service portable fire extinguishers in addition to a full range of fire protection services. You can find
NAFED members working in commercial, industrial, and residential settings making buildings safe.

Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE)

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) is a worldwide body that provides research, training,
conferences and professional qualifications for persons working in fields related to firefighting,
the science of prevention, and related technology. The IFE was established in 1918 and upholds
professional standards within all public and private fire sectors by offering assessment of knowledge.

KITCHEN HOOD SYSTEMS – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

The cooking line is the leading cause of all restaurant building

fires, which is why being prepared and having a proper
restaurant fire suppression system is crucial. According to
studies conducted by the NFPA, leading types of equipment
involved in restaurant building fires include deep fryers and
ranges.

When deciding on the right safety equipment and fire

suppression system for your restaurant’s kitchen, keep in
mind the areas where fires are most likely to occur. Due to
their importance, Fire and Safety Code requires that some
commercial properties have them installed.

Once a Kitchen Hood suppression system is required, it has to

be installed and maintained as per NFPA 17A: Standard for
Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems and NFPA 96: Standard
for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial
Cooking Operations.

Inspection, Testing & Maintenance Requirements:

 FIRE EXTINGUISHER – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Fire extinguishers are designed to release a chemical agent that can deplete fires in their incipient
stage. Due to their importance, every commercial property is required to have atleast one, according
to the TCI Building Code.

Once you are required to have an extinguisher, you must ensure that it is Inspected and Maintained
in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 10 – Standard for Portable Fire
Extinguishers, current edition.

Bi-Annual (6-Monthly) External Examination

 Reference – Turks & Caicos Islands Fire & Rescue Service General Policy

A bi-annual (6 months) external visual examination of all fire extinguishers shall be made to
detect obvious physical damage, corrosion, or nozzle blockage to verify that the operating
instructions are present. This examination must be performed by certified, trained and
approved individuals.

Six-Year Examination

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 7.3.6

Every six (6) years, stored-pressure fire extinguishers that require a twelve (12) year hydrostatic
test shall be emptied and subjected to the applicable internal and external examination
procedures as detailed in the manufactures service manual. This examination must be
performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

Extinguisher Recharging

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 7.8

All rechargeable-type fire extinguishers shall be recharged after any use or when the need is
indicated by an inspection or servicing. Recharging ensures that the extinguishers is ready to
be used in the event of an emergency. This process must be performed by certified, trained
and approved individuals.

Hydrostatic Testing

 Reference – NFPA 10 – 8.1

Pressure vessels used as fire extinguishers shall be hydrostatically tested in accordance with
this chapter. This process must be performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

A Fire Alarm System has a number of devices
working together to detect and warn people
through visual and audio appliances when
smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other
emergencies are present. Due to their
importance, the TCI Building Code requires that
some commercial properties have them installed.
Even though Fire alarm systems are expected to
help protect people, property, and assets, you
can’t tell if they’re fully operational just by looking
at them. As with any other system, electronics
and other components can degrade over time
and compromise the system’s operation. The
good news is that with proper testing, inspection,
and maintenance you can keep your fire alarm
system at optimum operating performance.
The frequency of maintenance of Fire Alarm
System equipment shall depend on the type
of equipment and the local ambient conditions.
Inspection and Testing Frequencies are detailed
in NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code.

Inspection Requirements

All systems shall be Inspected in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 14. This examination
must be performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

All systems shall be tested in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 14. This examination must be
performed by certified, trained and approved individuals.

 FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS – INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

According to the National Fire Protection Association

(NFPA), a business that has a fire sprinkler system
installed increases the likelihood that injuries to human
lives will be avoided. The primary reason why fire
sprinklers are so effective is that it is an automatic
system meant to protect your building from fire and
give occupants more time to get to safety.

Due to their importance, the TCI Building Code requires

Once a Fire Sprinkler and Fire Pump system is required
and installed, it has to be maintained as per NFPA 25:
Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance
of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.
