Welcome
from the editor
s write this, a wintery, wet squall is
throwing itself at our office windows
and I realise why I couldn’t resist
including Gwen Scott's tutorial, Say it with Green, in this month's
issue (pages 10 to 13). Let's prepare for early spring landscape
painting by practising colour mixing, making sheets of colour
swatches and tonal charts (don’t forget to label them), and finding
‘out how to temper some of the less-than-subtle readymade greens
in your paintboxes, Confident colour mixing is a vital skill if you
want to paint successfully, and time in experimenting and honing
this skill is always well spent, Painting should be fun, but to move
forward, some serious effort is also needed.
With the colour sheets ready, try Gwen’s exercise at the top of
page 11. It’s a valuable lesson in simplifying what often looks like
‘a jumble of colours and tones in a landscape,
Although Steve Strode has barely started on colour theory and
practice, his 13-part series, All about Colour (pages 46 to 49), is
proving immensely popular. If you have a question relating to
colour or colour mixing, contact me and one of our experts will
answer it. | would also love to hear from anyone who has advice or
painting practices that they think would benefit other readers.
For a change of pace, you'll find two articles on monochrome this
month. Tony Paul reports on a high-quality charcoal (pages 14 to
15) and explains a host of techniques used to draw portraits with
this much-valued medium. Linda Birch (pages 28 to 29) offers a
tutorial on painting black and white subjects using water-soluble
media, including an image that looks like a linocut, but was simply
produced using white gouache and ink,
Sometimes these snippets, found in panels and captions within
these pages, will make all the difference to your own paintings. Try
something new this month and see where it leads you,
