The C9 marine propulsion engine from Caterpillar takes full advantage of a sophisticated fuel
system designed for high-power operation, fuel economy and low emissions. With advanced
controls and technologies, the C9 replaces the similarly rated veteran workhorse Cat® 3306
engine.
The in-line, six-cylinder C9 diesel engine is rated at 510 mhp (503 bhp) 375 bkW at 2500 rpm
with a constant, flat power curve reserve to 2000 rpm. The flat power curve allows the engine
to draw on reserve power for easy acceleration, providing more power and speed for multiple
commercial marine applications, including lobster boats, fishing boats, patrol boats, harbor
vessels and municipal boats.
The C9 is IMO compliant and capable of meeting all current emission regulations. This
capability occurs through a combination of elements in Caterpillar’s ACERT® Technology,
including the Caterpillar ADEM™ III controller and patented HEUI™ B fuel system. ACERT
Technology provides a clear path to meet future emission regulations.

The ADEM III is an electronic control module (ECM) that provides multiple control inputs and
outputs, allowing numerous parameters to be controlled and monitored. The system provides
engine speed governing, automatic air-fuel ratio control, engine parameter monitoring, cold start
strategy, engine synchronization and system diagnostics. It also allows customers to control the
engine’s trolling mode strategy and slow vessel mode, which permits a full range of throttle
motion during trolling, from a low idle speed to a maximum trolling speed.
In addition, the ADEM III provides integration with optional display systems such as the Marine
Power Display (MPD), which is a large backlit LCD screen that makes quick reading possible
for vessel operators. The display provides trip value and total values for engine hours, fuel
used, average load factor, average fuel consumption, idle hours and idle fuel. The C9 is also
compatible with Caterpillar’s Engine Vision Display (EVD) and Marine Analog Power Display
(MAPD) systems.
The HEUI B fuel system utilizes hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled unit injectors
to inject fuel into the cylinder. The system allows complete, adjustment-free electronic control
of fuel injection pressure, timing and duration. This provides greater flexibility for programmed
electronic control strategies that determine engine performance and emissions control
characteristics. The HEUI system also contributes to the C9’s outstanding acceleration and
reserve power.
Vessel owners can receive prompt service and support worldwide from Caterpillar-trained
engineers and technicians. Caterpillar supplies complete literature and service guides to enable
vessel engineers to troubleshoot and facilitate repairs while underway.
