Parts of a Butterfly

First Grade

Writing Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some
sense of closure.

ELD Standards:
Interacting with others in written English in various communicative forms (print, communicative technology, and
multimedia)

Materials:
● Colored pencils
● Scissors
● Butterfly worksheet
● Butterfly sentence frame worksheet
● Butterfly velcro board/pieces

Objectives:
Beginners: SWBAT interact with others orally and in written English on the topic of parts of the butterfly.They will
write at least three complete sentences on parts of a butterfly. They will also label the parts of the butterfly. They will
write these sentences using sentence frames on the worksheet in pairs and with teacher support.

Intermediate and Advanced: SWBAT interact with others orally and in written English on the topic of parts of the
butterfly. They will write at least three complete sentences with decreasing help of sentence frames. They will also
label parts of the butterfly. They will write these sentences in pairs and will record them on the worksheet. Advanced
students should lead the discussion and write longer sentences on the different parts of the butterfly.

Assessment:
Take notes while students are interacting. Collect students’ work and make sure they wrote at least three complete
sentences about parts of a butterfly and labeled the different parts of the butterfly on the butterfly worksheet.

Informative, facts, interacting, and sentences

Review Vocabulary:
Review from previous lesson:
• Thorax- tórax
• Abdomen- abdomen
• Wings- alas (not a cognate)
• Head- cabeza (not a cognate)
• Antennae- antena

Discuss and teach the academic vocabulary - use it in a sentence and record it in their vocabulary journal.

Guided Practice:
Share the objectives with the class.
Introduce the academic vocabulary.
Review the vocabulary using cognates:
1.record- grabar(not a cognate)
2.sentences- frases (not a cognate)
3.visual- visual
4.vocabulary- vocabulario

Students discuss, and write vocabulary in their science journal.


Model how to write sentences describing meaning of each word. Students write their own sentences in their journal.

Share the PowerPoint slides with the class.


Share the butterfly velcro board and model how to put together the parts as a group.

Model how to fill in and color butterfly worksheet.

Independent Practice:
Have the students interact and discuss what they know about the parts of the butterfly.
Have intermediate and advanced students work together to write at least three sentences on the parts of the butterfly.
Work with the beginners and have them complete the sentences using sentence frames. After they finish the
sentences, they can color in their butterflies.

Modeling: Put parts of the butterfly together on a poster and explain each part.

Motivation: The students get to color their own butterflies.Showcase their work for parents open house.

Scaffolding: Use cognates, visuals, discussion. Use gestures (movements representing each part of the butterfly),
repetition (discuss different parts of the butterfly), images (point out images of the butterfly), using drawings

Background Knowledge (building schema):


Sentences: review what students know about sentence writing (parts of the sentence and so on)
Supply some facts about the topic: ask students if they understand this concept. Model how to provide facts related to
a topic
KWL on what the students know about a butterfly, what they want to learn about the butterfly, and finally what they
have learned about the butterfly.

Differentiation of Instruction:
Content: Model how to effectively interact with others. Model sentence writing, vocabulary with pictures, how to label
parts of the butterfly, video and visuals.
Process: Advanced students word with intermediate students, beginning students work in small groups.
Assessment: Access to technology to find terminology, text and visuals. Beginners receive support through
sentence frames and a more structured butterfly label worksheet.
