BIG CAPACITY, BETTER COOLING

The torque and horsepower output of a 6.7L Cummins diesel engine puts a lot of

6.6L Duramax L5P
Gale Banks Weighs in on
GM’s Long-Awaited Entry
in the Consumer-Diesel
Performance Battle
UNBEKNOWNST to many of you, we have been running and
testing a defense-market version of the all-new ’17 6.6L Duramax
L5P engine on the dyno since late 2015. Based on what we’ve
learned during this time, trust me, you’ll be impressed with the consumer
version of this powerplant.
With the exception of the bore and stroke, virtually every part of this
engine is new. Designed by a GM Global Propulsion Systems team led by
a duo of engineers who each have decades of experience in diesel design
and high performance, the engine is improved from the centerline of the
crankshaft out.
With L5P’s segment-leading 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, it appears GM’s
truck guys have entered—and are expecting to win—the torque war (and,
ultimately, the heavy-towing battle) being waged by Ford and Ram. So, with
the exception of the bore-center distance and the valve-stem centerline
locations, very little of the Duramax’s Isuzu heritage remains. Having held
a number of records with our Duramax-powered Pro Stock truck and our
Banks Sidewinder Top Dragster, we knew what we wanted improved—and
it’s like they read our minds.
The block, forged-steel crankshaft, main-bearing caps, rods, aluminum
pistons, oil pump, water pump, and head gaskets are all bigger, stronger, and
more capable than the components of previous versions. The high-pressure,
common-rail direct-injection fueling system is more refined and capable of
supporting a lot more power, as is the variable-geometry turbocharger. But
the aluminum cylinder heads are really something else. Wow! I call them the
100hp heads, as they truly flow that well!
While we’re developing marine, motorsports, and military versions of
this engine, I’m confident that in the consumer sector, the 6.6L Duramax
L5P will put ’17 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HDs and 3500HDs
directly in the hunt to meet or possibly raise the bar for pickup trucks’
towing capability. The wait is over, and GM has brought us an engine that I
think is going to make its presence known in a very big way.

footprint of a heavy-duty truck but want the power and towing prowess of a

We can’t wait to see how far the aermarket will be able to push this Cummins 5.0L V-8 engine. In stock trim, it’s more than strong enough to haul the ’17 Crew Cab Titan around with a
heavy trailer, so the single cab should be one capable workhorse.

When opting for the upper trim levels, even the Titan’s new single cab looks like a decent place to spend some time (le). Crew cab seen here on the right.

PROMASTER The only front-wheel-drive diesel van available in

the U.S. market receives only a few changes to equip-
ment and feature availability for 2017: Uconnect 3.0
is now available on all models, a wide rear axle is
now standard on chassis cab and cutaway models,
and the 118-inch wheelbase van is no longer avail-
able with the 3.0L I-4 diesel engine. All models with
the diesel now get a standard electronic parking
brake, and upfit interface connectors/rear speaker
wiring is now standard on all ProMasters. What
hasn’t changed? The van’s 4,160-pound maximum
payload rating and the I-4 diesel’s output of 174 hp
and 295 lb-ft of torque. Prices for the ’17 ProMas-
ter have not been announced, but they started at
$37,070 for a van with the diesel I-4 in 2016.
Ram ProMaster’s 4,160-pound payload capacity means it can haul more than 2 tons of cargo, and the front-
wheel-drive configuration means the load floor is nice and low.

ALISHA DUKE’S ’09 Chevrolet Silverado
2500HD started life innocently enough, as
a fitting minivan alternative, shuttling her
children to and from school and soccer practice. With
a passion for performance and love of trucks, Alisha
set out to learn all she could about the world of com-
petitive sled pulling. Then, in 2014, it was time to take
her shot at competing in this male-dominated world.
Turning to her good friend Steve Hill and shop
Dynamic Diesel, Alisha worked to build her truck
into one capable of a solid podium finish at each
competition. Halfway through her first season, Alisha
discovered her tuner switch hadn’t been function-
ing. With that fixed, she went on to an undefeated
second half—even when competing in the class above
hers. With an incredible first year behind her, Alisha
needed to decide where to go next. She chose to bump
up to the 2.5-inch-inducer Class, which meant adding
a lot more power.
To support the new power she planned to make, the
stock Allison 1000 six-speed transmission needed a
rebuild. Alisha called on Chris Rosscup and Deviant
Race Parts to build a solid Stage 5 slushbox, complete
with a triple-disc torque converter and all-new inter-
nals. A Fleece Performance Engineering AlliLocker

for most work truck operators. For Clayton Ary of Bakersfield, California,
getting cash also included spending some cash in order to build a slick, eye-

Clayton works for Brinderson Construction as a contract welder on a pipeline and, as
you can see, his work rig is nothing short of badass. If we were to ask him, he’d say it
was worth every penny spent and every moment of frustration in order to construct
the daily workhorse of his dreams.

ent ways. If a DIYer is going to do it from start to finish, the
conversion parts will usually run between $4,000 and $6,000, de-
pending on the package or parts he or she needs. That’s on top
of the cost of the engine and transmission themselves. If you are

particular conversion?
Aden McDonnell: What I think people struggle with the
most is approaching it in the correct order. Dimensionally, the
Cummins is longer. To fit it in the Super Duty engine bay and
to run the correct fan, the whole drivetrain needs to be shied
back approximately 2½ to 3 inches. That doesn’t sound like a
big difference. But it really is when there’s so lile room to work
with. I’ll get DIY customers who think they’ll just pull the Ford
motor out and go to stab that 5.9L engine in without mov-
ing the transmission. Nothing lines up and the fan is
in the radiator. Get the motor, gearbox, and transfer
case out of the way; set the Cummins into place;
and then work front to back. If you do it in that order,
this is not a hard job mechanically.

with the Ford shier and the operation of the Ford transfer case.

are always the engine mounts, engine adapters, clutch kits,
or flexplates, depending on which transmission you are run-

have realized over the years we’ve worked with Indus-

VP44 lives longer, because the pump is not doing all
the work. I believe in matching fueling to air, and in
order to do that you need to put the right combination
of parts together on the pump, with the injectors, and
with the air. They all need to be matched. The days of

Super Duty’s heater box. You can kind of get by with using
the stock exhaust manifold, but the downside to going
that route is you’ll end up with about ½ inch of clearance
between the turbo, the exhaust side section, the downpipe,
and the heater box. We’ve seen trucks with this setup
come into our shop with the heater box melted. The other
downside to it is the stock turbos that come on those

require swapping the five-speed valvebody for the six-

modules are designed to control.

DP: Are there any upgrades readers should consider

for the Allison behind a 24-valve Cummins?
Aden McDonnell: The first and foremost
upgrade we recommend is the torque converter.
It’s the key to everything. We’re puing an
inline motor in that has substantial amounts of
additional torque at a lower operating range
compared to the engine it’s replacing. We always
recommend a low-stall converter for the Cummins/
Allison conversion; between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm.
That’s ideal for daily street and towing applications. Another item in the conversion package that helps make the swap easier is this lower radiator

for engines making up to 700 hp is a standard build that
includes good clutches, a shi kit, and a converter. We are
totally fine with all the other internals in an Allison. If the

DP: When someone spends this kind of money to

Ford Super Duty, what’s the payback?
Aden McDonnell: Reliability and performance.
The Cummins has always been touted as a
million-mile motor. I 100 percent believe in that.
I have a local customer with a truck that we did
the 24-valve, common-rail swap with an Allison

removing DPFs and smog hardware is that it’s illegal and voids warranties. Remember, removal is done at your own risk.

WINTER TREADS
QUESTION: I just got transferred from sunny Southern California to
Wisconsin and am looking for input on what the best tires are for the Snow
Belt? My ’14 Ford F-250 has the stock Firestone Transforce HTs. They work
fine around here, but I am a bit skeptical about how they’ll do up North.

ANSWER: The HT is a decent all-season highway tire. However,

based on our winter-driving experiences, all-season tires are pretty much
worthless when the pavement turns white. Your best bet from a safety and
performance standpoint under those driving conditions is to use dedicated
snow tires mounted on steel rims if you plan on driving a lot on packed or
plowed roads.
There are a number of winter-specific light-duty truck tires from which
to choose, as well as all-terrain/all-weather rubber such as Nitto Tire’s
