ABOUT TISS
Sir Dorabji Tata was passionate about social
upliftment, education and its reach across the
country “without any distinction of place,
nationality or creed”. Therefore he put his heart and
his wealth into the creation of premier institutes of
learning, research and social advancement through
a trust. One such institution was the Sir Dorabji Tata
Graduate School of Social Work, which had its
humble beginning in 1936 with 20 students. The
institute was a pioneering effort in the field of Social
Science study, research and practice in India. It was
set up in response to Dr. Clifford Manshardt’s vision
of a post-graduate school of social work, of a
national stature.
The school was renamed ‘Tata institute of Social

Sciences’ in 1944.
The institute made a mark in the history of social

work in India, through pioneering efforts like
publishing the Indian Journal of Social Work, which
is the first journal of social work in South Asia. The
institute then and now is known for its prompt and
efficient response in sending relief in the face of
natural and man-made disasters.
Recognized as a deemed university in 1964, and

ABOUT SHSS The School of Health System Studies is spread over the two Mumbai campuses of Tata Institute of Social Sciences - The Main Campus and
the Malti & Jal A. D. Naoroji Campus Annexe. Both the Campuses are located in Deonar in the North-east section of Greater Mumbai.

INTERNSHIPS:
Qualification Profile
Students of hospital administration undergo three rigorous internships during the course of their two year study period. Each
internship is of the duration of 5 weeks and is carried out at the end of the second, third and fourth semesters respectively.
Students are placed in public, trust and corporate hospitals respectively so as to help them understand nuances of varying natures
of health care set ups. The internships are designed in a methodical and well coordinated manner such that the first internship MBBS 29%
exposes students to basic departments of the hospital, its preliminary functioning and the associated managerial inputs. Students BAMS 20%
are expected to study 2 medical and 2 non-medical departments during this phase followed by a relevant case study of their
BDS 11%
interest. The internships to follow constitute analyzing real time cases which provide the student an opportunity to enhance
business process capabilities. Each semester that follows an internship allows the student to apply concepts imbibed during the BHMS 8%
course work in real time. It helps them draw collaterals between theory and its conceptual application in the real world. BPT 9%

The third internship brings with itself a test of the student’s capabilities to adapt and produce results in a relatively new
environment. Students are placed in corporate hospitals all over India namely; Apollo Group of Hospitals, Fortis Group of Hospitals,
Max Group of Hospitals, Manipal Group of Hospitals etc.
The final block internship towards the end of the curriculum entails every student to work in any healthcare organization of their Work Experience Profile
choice, without any compensation, for a period of 1 month. This internship reiterates the ethos of the institute that is ingrained in
each student – service to the society. Though the students have been well placed before the period of this internship, they
contribute their theoretical and practical skills to the organization.

Project work is an important academic requirement for the hospital administration students.This is undertaken by the students

The course curriculum includes core management subjects like operations management, strategic management, finance and health
management information system as well as social science courses. It sensitizes the students to the public health challenges and
administrative methods to optimize the scarce resources. The students undergoing the course are trained in the basics of social science
research, with research being part of the final dissertation mandatory for completion of the course. The inclusion of this aspect makes
the course a “one of its kind” being offered in the country.

INTERNSHIPS:
One of the most distinctive features of the curriculum at TISS is the internship, a continual program, included in 2nd, 3rd and 4th Qualification Profile
semesters. It provides hands on experience and knowledge about the health sector wherein students see the theories they learn in
classrooms being applied in real challenges. Students are assigned to organizations, based on previous education, and past work
experience. Three, five week internships for the health administration students expose them to live projects involving the national
health programs, the NGO sector, and community based health programs. It helps build capacities in planning, implementing, BHMS 36%
monitoring and evaluating those programs, and orients students to macro issues relevant to health policy and programming in the

The final block internship towards the end of the curriculum entails every student to work in any healthcare organization of their

The compulsory component of health systems research as a high credit is specifically designed to imbibe in the students a spirit of
scientific enquiry through a highly structured pedagogy of quantitative and qualitative research methodology ultimately culminating
into a dissertation judged and evaluated strictly against set protocols ,thus preparing students to find out specific answers to

The MPH course consists of three internships, one at the end of each semester. Each internship lasts for a span of five weeks.The

1st internship primarily focuses on an urban slum’s socio-demographic profiling. It is designed to give important insight into the
health issues of urban slums. Individual studies are carried out on population sub-groups residing in the community for elaborate
understanding. Detailed analysis of several factors such as, socioeconomic status, health status, morbidity pattern, utilization of
health care services and expenditure for healthcare are undertaken.

Research being the core of MPH, the entire last semester is dedicated to the dissertation, a process which commenced early in the 1-2 yrs 7%
second semester. Each student is expected to work on a current and challenging topic. These studies are carried out under the
guidance of a designated faculty member. The dissertation is duly reviewed at each step by the faculty – right from the presentation
of the proposal to data collection and to the actual analysis. The studies are qualitative, quantitative or a mix of both the types. A
wide range of health problems ranging from communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases to women’s health issues are
covered. The student applies theoretical knowledge to the selected issue to come up with remarkable results. The data collection,
analysis and application help apply the concept in the field. Published research carves out a niche for MPH at SHSS, which is known
for its research excellence.
