Agriculture is the process of producing food, feed, fiber and many other products by the cultivation of
certain plants and the raising of domesticated animals. The practice of agriculture is also known as "farming".
Scientists, inventors and others have devoted to improving farming methods and implements. More people in
the world are involved in agriculture as their primary economic activity than in any other, yet it only accounts for
four percent of the world's GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
Agriculture sometimes refers to subsistence agriculture, the production of enough food to meet just the
needs of a farmer and his family. It may also refer to industrial agriculture, (often referred to as factory farming)
long prevalent in developed nations, which consists of obtaining financial income from the cultivation of land to
yield products, the commercial raising of animals, or both. Agriculture is also short for the study of the practice
of agriculture - more formally known as agricultural science. Increasingly, in addition to food for humans and
animal feeds, agriculture produces goods such as flowers, nursery plants, timber or lumber, fertilizers, animal
hides, leather, industrial chemicals (such as starch, sugar, ethanol, alcohols, and plastics), fibers, fuel, and
both legal and illegal drugs (biopharmaceuticals, tobacco, marijuana, opium, cocaine). Genetically engineered
plants and animals produce specialty drugs.

Think about your daily life. Do you follow the same road to work every day? Do you sit in the same
place in class? When you get dressed, do you always put the same leg or arm in first? You probably do,
because we all have routines in our lives.
Routines save time and energy because you do them without thinking, that's why they are so
important in the morning when your brain isn't active. Here's Jo talking about her morning routine.
'Oh yes. I always do exactly the same things. I wake up at seven o'clock every morning, but I don't get
up till quarter past seven. I switch on the radio and listen to the news. Then I go to the loo and I brush my
teeth. I have a shower and dry my hair. Then I choose my clothes and I get dressed. I don't eat anything for
breakfast. I just have a cup of coffee. Then I go to work. Yes, it's always the same.'
Routines are very useful, but they also make you uncreative. So sometimes it's a good idea to break
your routines. Get out of bed on the opposite side. Listen to a different radio station. Take a different route to
work. Eat something different for breakfast. Change your routine. You never know, it could change your life.
46. This passage is mainly concerned with _____.
A. our usual ways of doing things B. our daily activities

A. Routines make us unable to create things or to have new ideas.
B. Routines may change our life.
C. Routines make a habit of never thinking before doing.
D. Routines make us do the same things day after day.
50. Which of the sentences is true?
A. Routines make our brain creative. B. People who have routines are unable to think.
C. We shouldn't break our routines. D. Our lives could be changed if we change our routines.

The making and showing of motion pictures became a source of profit almost as soon as film was
invented. In 1898, some first commercial movies were ever produced. Other films soon followed, and motion
picture became a separate industry that was greater than any other industries. Several theaters and
companies were formed specifically to produce and distribute films, while film stars became famous and often
asked for huge salary for their performances. In 1917, Charlie Chapin had a contract that called for an annual
salary of one million dollars. In the United States today, much of the film industry is centered around
Hollywood. Other centers exist in many parts of the world, and the film industry produces the largest number of
films in the world every year. It is expensive to make movies so some film producers are sometimes dependent
on movie studios. However, recent advances in film making equipment have allowed film producers to be more
independent. A typical Hollywood-style filmmaking production cycle consists of five main stages: Development,
Preproduction, Production, Post-production, and Distribution. This production cycle typically takes three years.
The first year is taken up with development. The second year comprises preproduction and production. The
third year includes post-production and distribution. Profit is a key force in the industry. Because filmmaking is
expensive, many filmmakers try to create works of lasting social significance. The Academy Awards, also
known as The Oscars, are the most prominent film awards in the US, providing recognition each year to films,
based on their artistic values.

Although computers are considered the most perfect and effective devices in our modern time, we
cannot avoid some certain problems when we are working on a computer. Letters and phone conversations
are private. It is against the law to open someone's mail without permis sion or to listen secretly to someone's
telephone conversation. And now there are laws to protect the privacy of e-mail. It is also against the law to
read the messages that a person sends or receives on a computer. Although each person has a secret
password for his or her e-mail, sometimes the passwords are discovered by hackers and the mail box is
opened. Recently several companies that do business on the Internet have been attacked. The attackers sent
huge amounts of useless e-mails to the websites of these companies. The effect was to slow or stop the ability
of the companies to do their business. Such actions are known as "denial of service" attacks. The companies
say they may have lost millions of dollars because they were not able to provide goods and services during the
attacks. Most of the companies were able to solve the problem in about three hours. The victims of the attacks
included some of the largest and most successful companies on the Internet, such as Yahoo, Amazon, and
Com and E-Trade. The police have investigated the attackers. The computer industry leaders have discussed

This is part of a report by the Chairman of the Charities Committee of a Club.
By Match this year, we shall have raised enough money, we hope to buy the equipment for the Youth
Club. When we have raised the money, we are planning to go back to the Youth Club leaders in order to
discover exactly what is needed most. Plans have been made for the Book Sale which will be held on 15 th
February. This means that many of us will be spending the first two weeks of February collecting books. The
event is likely to be held in the Town Hall. If there are problems here, however, we hope that other Club
members might come up with some alternative suggestions.
As we are proposing to sponsor a student from Africa on a three-month language course in this
country, we also intend to hold a Charity Dance in the spring. Such events are apt to be difficult to organize, so
all members of the Club are invited to contribute or help in any way they can.
The moment I was asked if we could possibly help in some way with the new Club for the Disabled, I
said yes. As Chairman, I am bound to say that this is the sort of social work many Club members would like to
do, other than simply raising money. We are therefore planning to ask members if they can perhaps help out
on one Saturday every month (on a rota basis).
Finally, by January next year the Club will have been going for twenty years, and the Committee intend
to mark this anniversary with some kind of dinner, a dance or a party. We have already been offered
(unofficially) the use of the dance hall at 'The Forest Hotel'. However, we shall be devoting one of our meetings
in the near future to full discussion on the form of the event, etc. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Few men have influenced the development of American English to the extent that Noah Webster did.
Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1758, his name has become synonymous with American dictionaries.
Graduating from Yale in 1778, he was admitted to the bar in 1781 and thereafter began to practice law in
Hartford. Later, when he turned to teaching, he discovered how inadequate the available schoolbooks were for
the children of a new and independent nation.
In response to the need for truly American textbook, Webster published A Grammatical Institute of the
English Language, a three-volume work that consisted of a speller, a grammar, and a reader. The
Compendious Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1806.
In 1807 Noah Webster began his greatest work, An American Dictionary of the English Language. In
preparing the manuscript, he devoted ten years to the study of English and its relationship to other languages,
and seven more years to the writing itself. Published in two volumes in 1828, An American Dictionary of the
English Language has become the recognized authority for usage in the United States. Webster's purpose in
writing it was to demonstrate that the American language was developing distinct meanings, pronunciations,
and spelling from those of British English. He is responsible for advancing simplified spelling forms: develop
instead of the British form develope; theater and center instead of theatre and centre; color and honor instead
of colour and honour.

Crop rotation is the practice of growing different types of crops in the same field in sequential seasons
to avoid a decrease in soil fertility, as growing the same crop repeatedly in the same place eventually depletes
the soil of various nutrients. Crop rotation helps to balance the fertility demands of various crops. By crop
rotation farmers can keep their fields under continuous production, without the need to let them lie fallow, and
reducing the need for artificial fertilizers, both of which can be expensive. In subsistence farming, it also makes
good nutritional sense to grow beans and grain at the same time in different fields. Crop rotation is also used to
control pests and diseases that can become established in the soil over time. Plants within the same family
tend to have similar pests and pathogens. By regularly changing the planting location, the pest cycles can be
broken or limited. This principle is of particular use in organic farming, where pest control may be achieved
without synthetic pesticides. The choice and sequence of rotation crops depends on the nature of the soil, the
climate, and precipitation which together determine the type of plants that may be cultivated. Other important
aspects of farming such as crop marketing and economic variables must also be considered when choosing a
crop rotation. Crop rotation was already mentioned in the Roman literature, and referred to by great
civilizations in Africa and Asia. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 20 th century, the three-year rotation
was practised by farmers in Europe.

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Telecommuting is some form of computer communication between employees' homes and offices. For
employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the
location of the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can communicate over tele phone lines, when
the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer and transmit the material to their employers. A
recent survey in USA Today estimates that there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters. But although
the numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business
Week published "The Portable Executive" as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn't telecommuting
become more popular?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of
many managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large workforce scattered
across the country would be too difficult, or at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed there
by complicating the manager's responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are often reluctant to accept
the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned that
they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting.
Some people feel that even when a space in their home is set aside as work area, they never really get away
from the office.
46. With which of the following topics is the passage primarily concerned?
A. The advantages of telecommuting. B. A definition of telecommuting.
C. An overview of telecommuting. D. The failure of telecommuting.

I rang up several of my friends and we decided to go to London for the day. I was really excited as I
hadn't been to London since I was ten. We decided to go by coach as this was by far the cheapest means of
transport that was available even though it meant that we needed to get up very early. Once in London we
decided to take a sightseeing tour as we wanted to see some of the famous buildings. After the tour we bought
some sandwiches and ate them in a small park. In the afternoon two of us went shopping and the others went
to the theater. We met up again at 6:30 p.m. and went to a small restaurant in Soho. The meal was really good
but, unfortunately, it took much longer than we had expected. We had to get a taxi back to the coach station.
Luckily, we got there just two minutes before our coach left.

The natural world is under violent assault from man.
The seas and rivers are being poisoned by radioactive wastes, by chemical discharges and by the
dumping of dangerous toxins and raw sewage. The air we breathe is polluted by smoke and fumes from
factories and motor vehicles; even the rain is poisoned.
It's little wonder forests and lakes are being destroyed and everywhere wildlife is disappearing. Yet the
destruction continues.
Governments and industries throughout the world are intensifying their efforts to extract the earth's
mineral riches and to plunder its living resources.
The great rainforests and the frozen continents alike are seriously threatened despite the warnings of
the scientific community and the deep concern of millions of ordinary people.
Despite the fact, too, that we can create environmentally-clean industries, harness the power of the
sun, wind and waves for our energy needs and manage the finite resources of the Earth in a way that will
safeguard our future and protect all the rich variety of life forms which share this planet with us.
But there is still hope. The forces of destruction are being challenged across the globe - and at the
spearhead of this challenge is Greenpeace.
Wherever the environment is in danger, Greenpeace has made a stand. Its scientific presentations and
peaceful direct actions at sea and on land have shocked governments and industries into an awareness that
Greenpeace will not allow the natural world to be destroyed. Those actions, too, have won the admiration and
support of millions.
Now you can strengthen the thin green line; you can make your voice heard in defence of the living
world by joining Greenpeace today. Thank God someone's making waves.

Movies are a kind of storytelling. They try to describe an idea or record an observation about our

accurately and realistically, whereas other movies find visual symbols to (39) _____ those situations.

Many people now think that teachers give students too much homework. They say that it is
unnecessary for children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, they argue that most teachers do not
properly plan the homework tasks they give to students. The result is that students have to repeat tasks which
they have already done at school.
Recently in Greece many parents complained about the difficult homework which teachers gave to
their children. The parents said that most of the homework was a waste of time, and they wanted to stop it.
Spain and Turkey are two countries which stopped homework recently. In Denmark, Germany and several
other countries in Europe, teachers cannot set homework at weekends. In Holland, teachers allow students to
stay at school to do their homework. The children are free to help one another. Similar arrangements also exist
in some British schools.
Most people agree that homework is unfair. A student who can do his homework in a quiet and
comfortable room is in a much better position than a student who does his homework in a small, noisy room
with the television on. Some parents help their children with their homework. Other parents take no interest at
all in their children's homework.
It is important, however, that teachers talk to parents about homework. A teacher should suggest
suitable tasks for parents to do with their children. Parents are often better at teaching their own children!
46. According to the writer, _____.
A. many parents would like their children to have less homework
B. homework is unnecessary for children
C. parents think that students should have to do a lot of work in their leisure time
D. teachers used to give their students less homework than they do now
47. According to many parents, _____.
A. most homework is different from the work the students have done in class
B. their children have to plan the homework tasks
C. a lot of homework has not been planned properly
D. most teachers give homework that has already been done at school
48. Which of the following sentences is NOT true?
A. Children do not have homework now in Turkey.
B. In some countries in Europe teachers are allowed to give children homework only at weekends.
C. Children can do their homework at school and help one another in some schools in Britain.
D. Greek parents thought their children’s homework was too difficult.
49. Only a small number of people _____.
A. can help their children with their homework B. take interest in their children’s homework
C. agree that homework is unnecessary D. think that homework is fair
50. According to the passage, teachers should _____.

In 1970, Norman Borlaug won a Nobel Prize for his work in the Green Revolution in agriculture. The
Green Revolution is an agricultural plan which has been developed as part of the effort to transfer agricul tural
technology to less agriculturally advanced areas. In his research, Norman developed high-yielding varieties of
wheat which have made the amount of wheat increase significantly. In addition to his research on wheat, he
and his colleagues also developed high-yielding varieties of other grains, such as rice and corn.
Everybody agrees that there is always a need to produce more food for the growing human population.
It seems that the Green Revolution could end hunger and ensure an adequate supply of food far into the
future. However, not all farmers can get benefits from the Green Revolution. Two important parts of the plan
are irrigation and the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides at certain times during the growth cycle.
Because the plan requires irrigation of crops, that means digging a well. The poor farmers are not rich enough
to afford a well, fertilizers, and pesticides as the plan requires. Moreover, if their wealthy neighbors apply the
plan, they produce more grains to sell, get more money to buy machinery. And the machinery, in turn, helps
them to get more grains and money. The poorer farmers cannot compete with their neighbors and their
economic situation will become worse. Some of them even give up their land.
36. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Poor farmers do not appreciate the Green Revolution.
B. The advantages and disadvantages of the Green Revolution.
C. The Green Revolution cannot help to increase the amount of grain.
D. Only poor farmers need to apply the Green Revolution.
37. The Green Revolution _____.

In the primary school, a child is in a comparatively simple setting and most of the time forms a
relationship with one familiar teacher. On entering secondary school, a new world opens up and frequently it is
a much more difficult world. The pupil soon learns to be less free in the way he speaks to teachers and even to
his fellow pupils. He begins to lose gradually the free and easy ways of the primary school, for he senses the
need for a more cautious approach in the secondary school where there are older pupils. Secondary staff and
pupils suffer from the pressures of academic work and seem to have less time to stop and talk. Teachers with
specialist roles may see hundreds of children in a week, and a pupil may be able to form relationships with
very few of the staff. He has to decide which adults are approachable; good schools will make clear to every
young person from the first year what guidance and personal help is available - but whether the reality of life in
the institution actually encourages requests for help is another matter.
Adults often forget what a confusing picture school can offer to a child. He sees a great deal of
movement, a great number of people - often rather frightening-looking people - and realizes that an increasing
number of choices and decisions have to be made. As he progresses through the school the confusion may
become less but the choices and decisions required will increase. The school will rightly expect the pupil to
take the first steps to obtain the help he needs, for this is the pattern of adult life for which he has to be
prepared, but all the time the opportunities for personal and group advice must be presented in a way which
makes them easy to understand and within easy reach of pupils.
46. According to the passage one of the problems for pupils entering secondary schools is that _____.
A. they are taught by many different teachers
B. they do not attend lessons in every subject
C. the teachers do not want to be friendly
D. the teachers give most attention to the more academic pupils
47. In secondary schools every pupil having problems should _____.
A. be able to discuss his problems in class B. be able to discuss his problems with any teacher
C. know how to ask for help D. be freed from any pressure of academic work
48. Talking about secondary schools, the author is mainly concerned about _____.
A. academic standards B. the personal development of pupils
C. the role of specialist teachers D. the training of the individual teachers
49. The word 'approachable' means most nearly the same as _____.

The Braille system, devised in 1821 by Louis Braille, is a method that is widely used by blind people to
read and write. It was based on a method of communication originally developed by Charles Barbier in
response to Napoleon's demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently and without light at
night called night writing. Barbier's system was too complex for soldiers to learn, and was rejected by the
military. In 1821 he visited the National Institute for the Blind in Paris, France, where he met Louis Braille.
Louis identified the major failing of the code, which was that the human finger could not encompass the whole
symbol without moving, and so could not move rapidly from one symbol to another. His modification was to use
a 6 dot cell - the Braille system - which revolutionized written communication for the blind. Though Braille is
thought to be the main way blind people read and write, in Britain, for example, out of the re ported 2 million
visually impaired population, it is estimated that only around 15-20 thousand people use Braille. Younger
people are turning to electronic text on computers instead; a more portable communication method that they
can also use with their friends. A debate has started on how to make Braille more attractive and for more
teachers to be available to teach it. Approximately 600 years before the invention of Braille a Syrian Muslim
had created his own system. The distinguished blind Arab professor, Zain-Din Al Amidi in the 14 th century
improvised a method by which he identified his books and made notes. Although he was blind soon after birth,
he led a studious life, interesting himself particularly in foreign languages.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer - A, B, C, or D.
Last week I made the mistake of visiting the village where I grew up. It was a small, friendly community
with two farms and a number of old cottages round the village green. I realized very quickly that although in
many ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same. All the pretty cottages are there, of
course, and both the picturesque farmhouses. But none of the inhabitants are country people. All of them are
commuters, who leave early every morning for the nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a
farm these days; the land has been sold and is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little
interest in the village itself. There are a few new houses, but they have no local character; you can see the
same style anywhere in the country. The whole of the village, in fact, has been tidied up so much that it has
become nothing more than just another suburb.

Galileo Galilei, one of the first modern scientists, was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1564. About twenty years later
he attended the University of Pisa. At first he studied philosophy, but later he studied mathematics and astronomy.
He was interested in the way the earth and other planets move around the sun. He made the telescope, which
made far-away things look larger and easier to examine. He also started the new way of working in science.
Before Galileo, scientists did not do experiments. They just guessed about how something happened. Galileo was
different. He did not make guesses. He did experiments and watched to see what happened.
Galileo was famous for his study of how things fall. He was the first person to do experiments about
this problem. Before, people thought that heavy things always fell faster than light things. He found out that this
was not true. He took a heavy ball and a light ball and he dropped them both from a high place. They fell at the
same speed. This meant that weight is not important. This is the law of falling bodies. It is an important law for
understanding our world.
The life of the scientists was not always easy in the 1500s. For example, Galileo got into trouble
because of his scientific ideas. His ideas were not the same as the religious ideas at the time. Many religious
people did not agree with him. During his whole life he had to worry about this. He even went to prison for a
while. But no one could stop him from thinking. He continued to look for scientific answers to his questions
about the world.

Most people are afraid of sharks, but they usually do not know much about them. For example, there
are about 350 species of sharks that live in oceans over the world. All of the sharks are carnivores, but most of
them don't attack people. Some sharks are very small - the smallest shark is about 6 inches long - about as
long as your hand. But some sharks are very large. The largest species of sharks may be 60 feet long and
weigh 15 tons. Unlike many other kinds of fish, sharks do not have bone. Their bodies are made up of a kind of
tough white flexible material (called cartilage). Sharks do not have ears. However, they 'hear’ sounds and
movements in the water. Any sound or movement makes the water vibrate. Sharks can feel these vibrations,
and they help the sharks find food. Sharks use their large eyes to find food, too. Most sharks see best in low
light. They often hunt for food at dawn, in the evening, or in the middle of the night.
Nowadays scientists want to learn more about sharks for several reasons. For example, cancer is
common in many animals, including people. However, it is rare in sharks. Scientists want to find out why
sharks almost never get cancer. Maybe this information can help people prevent cancer too.

Man is a land animal, but he closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs
of man. The sea provided man with food and convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly
two thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources
on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas
explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of mineral exist on the ocean floor
ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by the Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves
offer possible use as a source of energy. Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the
sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2020 the
problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals and energy sources of the sea will be largely
solved.

We are all slowly destroying the earth. The seas and rivers are too dirty to swim in. There is so much
smoke in the air that it is unhealthy to live in many of the world's cities. In one well-known city, for example,
poisonous gases from cars pollute the air so much that traffic policemen have to wear oxygen masks.
We have cut down so many trees that there are now vast areas of wasteland all over the world. As a
result, farmers in parts of Africa cannot grow enough to eat. In certain countries in Asia there is too little rice.
Moreover, we do not take enough care of the countryside. Wild animals are quickly disappearing. For instance,
tigers are rare in India now because we have killed too many for them to survive. However, it isn't enough

Chen likes to get his news from the paper. Lemma turns on the television to find out what's going on in
the world. Eve subscribes to more magazines than she can keep track of, whereas Kobi chooses to listen to
radio talk shows that cover issues thoroughly to tap into what's going on in the world. All these people are

What is the media? What constitutes the media? The media consists of all the ways that news and
information is distributed to a mass audience. The media covers everything from hard news, which is
investigative reporting, to stories that are purely entertaining, such as whether your favorite movie star was on
the "Best Dresser / Worst Dresser" list. Whether in print or broadcast on TV, the stories are the product of the
reporting of many journalists who write the stories, and editors who give out the assignments, assess the
quality of the writing and research, and make the decisions about where and when the stories run.
The news has immediate impact. The Internet puts global news onto the personal computer on your
desk. Almost all browsers have links to up-to-the-minute news stories from various news services. You can

Read the following passage and choose the best answers.
Rainforests circle the globe for twenty degrees of latitude on both sides of the equator. In that relatively
narrow band of the planet, more than half of all the species of plants and animals in the world make their
home. Several hundred different varieties of trees may grow in a single acre, and just one of those trees may
be the habitat for more than ten thousands kinds of spiders, ants, and other insects. More species of
amphibians, birds, insects, mammals and reptiles live in rainforests than anywhere else on earth.
Unfortunately, half of the world's rainforests have already been destroyed, and at the current rate,
another 25 percent will be lost by the year 2020. Scientists estimate that as many as fifty million acres are
destroyed annually. In other words, every sixty seconds, one hundred acres of rainforest is being cleared.
When this happens, constant rains erode the former forest floor, the thin layer of soil no longer supports plant
life, and the ecology of the region is altered forever. Thousands of species of plants and animals are
condemned to extinction and since we aren't able to predict the ramifications of this loss to a delicate global
ecology, we don't know what we may be doing to the future of the human species as well.
46. What is the point of view that the author expresses in this passage?
A. The author believes that the rainforest will survive.
B. The author believes that preserving the rainforest is important to the global ecology.
C. The author believes that he can predict the future of global ecology.
D. The author believes that the extinction of species is a natural process.
47. According to the passage, more than half of all the species of plants and animals _____.
A. live in twenty rainforests B. live in several hundred different varieties of trees
C. live in a forty-degree band of latitude D. live in areas where the rainforest has been cleared
48. How many of the world’s rainforests are projected to be destroyed by the year 2020 if the current rate
continues?
A. All of them will be gone. B. Three-quarters of them will be gone.
C. Half of them will be gone. D. One-quarter of them will be gone.
49. The word 'this' refers to _____.
A. the destruction of the acres B. the reading of the passage
C. the erosion of the forest floor D. the constant rains
50. What will NOT happen if the rainforest continues to be cleared?
A. The land will be eroded by the rains.
B. Many species of plants and animals that depend on the rainforest will become extinct.
C. The future of the human species may be changed.
D. The rainforest will grow, but at a much slower rate.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. For many Americans it is
the most important holiday apart from Christmas. Schools, offices and most businesses close for
Thanksgiving, and many people make the whole weekend a vacation.
Thanksgiving is associated with the time when Europeans first came to North America. In 1620 the
ship the Mayflowers arrived, bringing about 150 people who today are usually called Pilgrims. They arrived at
the beginning of a very hard winter and could not find enough to eat, so many of them died. But in the following
summer Native Americans showed them what foods were safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next
winter. They held a big celebration to thank God and the Native Americans for the fact that they had survived.
Today people celebrate Thanksgiving to remember these early days. The most important part of the
celebration is a traditional dinner with foods that come from North America. The meal includes turkey, sweet
potatoes (also called yams) and cranberries, which are made into a kind of sauce or jelly. The turkey is filled
with stuffing or dressing, and many families have their own special recipe. Dessert is pumpkin made into a pie.
On Thanksgiving there are special television programs and sports events. In New York there is the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, when a long line of people wearing fancy costumes march through the
streets with large balloons in the shape of imaginary characters. Thanksgiving is considered the beginning of
the Christmas period, and the next day many people go out to shop for Christmas presents.
