CI 280 Strategy Presentation: Assessment

Lesson Plan
Kelsey Morris, Deanna Bird, Susie Muth, Dana Winthrop, Anthony Shramko

Topic: Math: How to Solve Systems of Equations

1) Opener: (3 MIN)
Math trick- grab attention. The goal is to capture the attention of the audience, get them
interested in math for the rest of the lesson.

2) Pre-assessment/Overview of Objectives: (5 MIN)

Assessment to see what the class knows before the lesson. #3 is designed to be very difficult to
define the level of math the students know. We will reinforce that #3 is another math topic that
would be learned if one continued their math education. Directions are given in non-native
language with no aid, as a new ELL might experience.
After pre-test, see where the class is and go over what we will be learning in today’s lesson.

Objectives:
● Learn how to solve for variables
● Learn how to solve systems of equations
● Learn how to relate these concepts to real-world examples
● Learn and infuse a relevant Spanish vocabulary
● Create an engaging learning environment
● Create chances for students to learn from a few different
learning styles
● Use translanguaging techniques while teaching
● Create ways to assist language learner students during
assessment to ensure the assessment is content based and
not based on their proficiency of the new language

3) Vocabulary Lesson: (5 MIN)

Words on google slides, say context examples for each
Instructing proper translation and pronunciation of new words given in context. The purpose for
this is so vocabulary can be used in the word problems.

4) Lesson: (20-25 MIN, 5-6 MIN at each station)

How to solve problems: Going over the pre-test plus extra examples.
We will be stationed around the room to get the class up and moving.
Explaining how to relate systems of equations into real world context. Incorporating Spanish
vocabulary into word problems and testing the knowledge of vocabulary words during lesson.
5) Come back together as a group, ask for additional questions, hand out final
assessment (8 MIN)
Answer any additional questions before handing out the final assessment. The final assessment
is based directly on problems covered during the lesson, and intended to test strictly content
knowledge, giving language learners the vocabulary reference slide. After assessment, check
answers and confirm concepts were learned.
6) Explain the procedures and strategies used (5 MIN)
Explain to fellow students why we used the procedures and strategies we did in order to inform
fair, more effective ways of assessing emergent bilinguals.
