FOREWORD
It is decision time. As the message of Elijah touches our
hearts and consciences by the study of these lessons, there is a
call to choose for or against the truth. As believers in the
threefold angels' message, some of us may have known many
aspects of the Elijah message. But how much of it have we put in-
to practice? "How long halt ye between two opinions?" echoes
the voice of Elijah down to our time. We cannot be undecided. "A
doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8).
As we study the lessons this quarter, God's call to us is very
direct and startling: "Cboose you this day whom ye will serve"
(Joshua 24:15). By the grace of God let us:
CHOOSE to practice all the health reform principles con-
sistently (Romans 12:1; CD 341-342).
CHOOSE to have daily personal contact with Christ through
prayer and study of His Word (Psalm 46:10; DA 363).
CHOOSE to be minutemen and help find the "7,000" who
have not bowed their knee to Baal (Luke 14:23; PK 171).
CHOOSE to take special interest in our personal preparation
and in that of our families to meet our God (Amos 4:12; 2SM 116).
CHOOSE to be a genuine Reformer; one who practices what
he preaches, in every aspect of life (Isaiah 61:4; 4BC 1151).
CHOOSE to represent Christ in the family circle not only by
precept, but especially by example (Malachi 4:6; PP 140, 141).
CHOOSE to be sanctified by cheerfully performing daily
duties in perfect obedience to God (Matthew 25:23; COL 360).
CHOOSE to daily enter with Christ into the Most Holy place
by faith and personal experience (Hebrews 10:19, 20; 7BC 933,
934).
CHOOSE to invest time, money and resources in the estab-
lishment of "schools of the prophets" (Isaiah 58:12; 6T 441).
If we, by God's grace, have a close, personal relationship with
Christ, and live and practice the truths outlined in this quarterly
entitled Choose Ye This Day, we will be caught up as was Elijah
when the small black cloud appears in the eastern sky (GC 640).
"When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced
in His people then He will come to claim them as His own."

Lessons for Today

Seeing the tremendous increase in requests for

Sabbath Bible Lessons, we are awestruck by the
solemn import of these quarterlies as tools in the hand
of God today. Even in this hour of great spiritual crisis,
when there are "gods many and lords many," when
"every wind of doctrine" is blowing (5T 80), when
"there is a spirit of opposition to the plain word of God
and to the testimony of His Spirit" (5T 79), faithful
Adventists can find comfort in the assurance that there
is "nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall
forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in
our past history" (LS 196).
"The Sabbath school should be a place where the
jewels of truth are searched for and rescued from their
environment of error, and placed in their true setting
in the framework of the gospel. Precious gems of
truth, long lost sight of, are now to be restored to the
children of God." -Counsels on Sabbath School Work, p. 12.
The Sabbath Bible Lessons are based solely on
the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy, and are carefully
designed to foster deep spiritual enrichment. As pub-
lishers and distributors of these lessons, we seek to
prepare studies that will genuinely strengthen God's
final remnant. In order to better serve you and your
missionary needs, please send us your comments,
questions, suggestions, or any recommendations you
may have for improving the Sabbath Bible Lessons.
Your response is most welcome!

Restoration
Through Natural Remedies
"The burden of disease and wretchedness and sin [Christ] came to re-
move. It was His mission to bring to men complete restoration; He
came to give them health and peace and perfection of character."-
The Ministry of Healing, p. 17.

KEY TEXT: "For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy
wounds, saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 30: 17).

GOD'S PROVISIONS FOR GOOD HEALTH March 27

1. What provision did God make to keep Elijah supplied with fresh,
pure water? 1 Kings 17:4 (first part).

"In health and in sickness, pure water is one of heaven's choicest bless-
ings. Its proper use promotes health."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 237.

2. From what other provision did Elijah benefit? Matthew 5:45. Men-
tion one more natural remedy that was abundantly used by Elijah
and that works as a blessing to all those who live in the country.

"Air, air, the precious boon of heaven which all may have, will bless you
with its invigorating influence if you will not refuse it entrance. Welcome it,
cultivate a love for it, and it will prove a precious soother of the nerves. Air
must be in constant circulation to be kept pure. The influence of pure, fresh
air is to cause the blood to circulate healthfully through the system. It
refreshes the body and tends to render it strong and healthy, while at the
same time its influence is decidedly felt upon the mind, imparting a degree of
composure and serenity. It excites the appetite, and renders the digestion of
food more perfect, and induces sound and sweet sleep."- Testimonies, vol. 1,
p.702.
"If you would have your homes sweet and inviting, make them bright
with air and sunshine. Remove your heavy curtains, open the windows,
throw back the blinds, and enjoy the rich sunlight, even if it be at the ex-
pense of the colors of your carpets. The precious sunlight may fade your

-5-
carpets, but it will give a healthful color to the cheeks of your children."-
Ibid., vol. 2, p. 527.

D Monday
LAWS TO PROMOTE HEALTH March 28
3. What natural remedy did the exhausted, depressed servant of God
use for his physical restoration? 1 Kings 19:5; Ecclesiastes 5:12.

"Some make themselves sick by overwork. For these, rest, freedom

from care, and a spare diet, are essential to restoration of health. To those
who are brain weary and nervous because of continual labor and close con-
finement, a visit to the country, where they can live a simple, carefree life,
coming in close contact with the things of nature, will be most helpful.
Roaming through the fields and the woods, picking the flowers, listening to
the songs of the birds, will do far more than any other agency toward their
recovery."- The Ministry of Healing, pp. 236, 237.

4. What form of physical exercise did Elijah frequently have to take?

1 Kings 18:46 (last part); 19:8. What is written about the impor-
tance of physical exercise?

"Morning exercise, in walking in the free, invigorating air of heaven, or

cultivating flowers, small fruits, and vegetables, is necessary to a healthful
circulation of the blood. It is the surest safeguard against colds, coughs, con-
gestions of the brain and lungs, inflammation of the liver, the kidneys, and
the lungs, and a hundred other diseases." -My Life Today, p. 136.

D Tuesday
ELIJAH'S DIET March 29

5. How had the diet of Elijah progressively changed? 1 Kings 17:6,

10-13; 19:6. What is the ideal diet for the people of God in these
last days?

"Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by
our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as
possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a
power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more
complex and stimulating diet."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 296.

6. What implications does Elijah's progressively more simple dietary

pattern have for us? With what words did Solomon recommend
moderation and regularity in eating? Ecclesiastes 10:17.

"If ever there was a time when the diet should be of the most simple
kind, it is now."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 352.
"As a people, with all our profession of health reform, we eat too
much." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 135.

CHRIST REFORMS PHYSICAL HABITS March 30

7. How did Christ begin the work of redemption for man? Why? Mat-
thew 4:1-4.

"Christ knew that in order to successfully carry forward the plan of

salvation He must commence the work of redeeming man just where the
ruin began. Adam fell by the indulgence of appetite. In order to impress
upon man his obligations to obey the law of God, Christ began His work of
redemption by reforming the physical habits of man."- Testimonies, vol. 3,
p.486.
"Only hy the inexpressible anguish which Christ endured, can we esti-
mate the evil of unrestrained indulgence. His example declares that our only
hope of eternal life is through bringing the appetites and passions into sub-
jection to the will of God."-The Desire 0/ Ages, p. 122.

8. How did Christ teach the importance of economy and a simple diet?
John 6:5-12.

"Christ could have spread for the people a rich repast, but food
prepared merely for the gratification of appetite would have conveyed no
lesson for their good. Through this miracle Christ desired to teach a lesson
of simplicity. If men today were simple in their habits, living in harmony
with nature's laws, as did Adam and Eve in the beginning, there would be an
abundant supply for the needs of the human family. But selfishness and the
indulgence of appetite have brought sin and misery, from excess on the one
hand, and from want on the other."-The Ministry 0/ Healing, p. 47.
"After the multitude had been fed, there was an abundance of food left.
Jesus bade His disciples, 'Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing
be lost.' John 6:12. These words meant much more than putting the food in-
to baskets. The lesson was twofold. Nothing is to be wasted. We are to let
slip no temporal advantage. We should neglect nothing that would serve to
benefit a human being. Let everything be gathered up that will relieve the
necessities of earth's hungry ones. With the same carefulness are we to
treasure the bread from heaven to satisfy the needs of the soul. By every
word of God we are to live. Nothing that God has spoken is to be lost. Not
one word that concerns our eternal salvation are we to neglect. Not one word
is to fall useless to the ground."-Ibid., p. 48.

o Thursday
HEALTH AND GODLINESS March 31

9. What relationship exists between physical and spiritual health?

3 John 2; Isaiah 40:30,31.

"The relation that exists between the mind and the body is very inti-
mate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the

-7-
mind affects the health to a far greater degree than many realize. Many of
the diseases from which men suffer are the result of mental depression.
Grief, anxiety, discontent, remorse, guilt, distrust, all tend to break down
the life forces and to invite decay and death."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 241.
"The better you observe the laws of health, the more clearly can you
discern temptations, and resist them, and the more clearly can you discern
the value of eternal things." -My Life Today, p. 141.

10. Who is the Author of all physical law? On what condition did God
promise to protect His people from disease? Exodus 15:26.

"Every law governing the human machinery is to be considered just as

truly divine in origin, in character, and in importance as the word of God.
Every careless, inattentive action, any abuse put upon the Lord's wonderful
mechanism, by disregarding His specified laws in the human habitation, is a
violation of God's law."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 17.
"God has formed laws to govern every part of our constitutions, and
these laws which He has placed in our being are divine, and for every trans-
gression there is affixed a penalty, which must sooner or later be realized."
·-Ibid., p. 19.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, April 9, 1994

The Right Arm

of the Elijah Message
"The world needs today what it needed nineteen hundred years ago
- a revelation of Christ. A great work of reform is demanded, and it
is only through the grace of Christ that the work of restoration,
physical, mental, and spiritual, can be accomplished." - The Ministry
of Healing, p. 143.

KEY TEXT: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God, which is your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1).

o Sunday
THE RIGHT ARM OF THE MESSAGE April 3

1. How is the work of modern Elijah described? Malachi 4:5,6. Why is

health reform part of the Elijah message? Luke 17:26, 27; Matthew
I 17:11.
( "Those who are to prepare the way for the second coming of Christ are
represented by faithful Elijah, as John came in the spirit of Elijah to prepare
the way for Christ's first advent. The great subject of reform is to be agi-
tated, and the public mind is to be stirred. Temperance in all things is to be
connected with the message, to turn the people of God from their idolatry,
their gluttony, and their extravagance in dress and other things."- Testimo-
nies, vol. 3, p. 62.
"I was again shown that the health reform is one branch of the great
work which is to fit a people for the coming of the Lord. It is as closely con-
nected with the third angel's message as the hand is with the body."-lbid.,
p. 161.

2. Why do we believe that health reform is part of our preparation for

the loud cry? Hosea 6:1-3. What is the great object of health
reform?

"I was shown that if God's people make no efforts on their part, but
wait for the refreshing to come upon them and remove their wrongs and cor-

-9-
rect their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of
the flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel,
they will be found wanting. The refreshing or power of God comes only on
those who have prepared themselves for it by doing the work which God
bids them, namely, cleansing themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and
spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 619.
"The work of health reform is the Lord's means for lessening suffering
in our world and for purifying His church." -Ibid., vol. 9, pp. 112, 113.
"Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic
reform is to secure the highest possible development of mind and soul and
body." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 23.
o Monday
THE BLESSING OF HEALTH REFORM April 4
3. What does the Lord promise to those who live the principles of the
health message on a consistent basis? Deuteronomy 7: 15. What in-
fluence will a faithful example have upon those who hear the third
angel's message?

"God has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us in these
last days, that by walking in the light we may escape many of the dangers to
which we shall be exposed."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 22.
"Much of the prejudice that prevents the truth of the third angel's
message from reaching the hearts of the people, might be removed if more
attention were given to health reform. When people become interested in
this subject, the way is often prepared for the entrance of other truths. If
they see that we are intelligent with regard to health, they will be more
ready to believe that we are sound in Bible doctrines." -Ibid., p. 76.
"[God] has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us, that
we may see our sin in violating the laws which He has established in our
being. All our enjoyment or suffering may be traced to obedience or trans-
gression of natural law. Our gracious heavenly Father sees the deplorable
condition of men who, some knowingly but many ignorantly, are living in
violation of the laws that He has established. And in love and pity to the
race, He causes the light to shine upon health reform."- Testimonies, vol. 3,
p. 161.

4. When prayers for the sick are offered, what must precede the ex-
pected healing? James 5:16; Psalm 103:1-3.
o Tuesday
FACING THE FACTS April 5
5. With the increased interest in healthful living among the scientific
community and the general public, what great responsibility rests
upon God's people? Deuteronomy 28: 13.

"I feel sad when I see those who ought to be zealous for our health prin-
ciples, not yet converted to the right way of living. I pray that the Lord may

-10 -
impress their minds that they are meeting with great loss. If things were as
they should be in the households that make up our churches, we might do
double work for the Lord."- Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 163, 164.

6. What is the result of neglecting the light on health reform? Deuter-

onomy 28:15, 22, 35, 60, 61.

"Seventh-day Adventists are handling momentous truths. More than

forty [now nearly one hundred and forty] years ago the Lord gave us special
light on health reform, but how are we walking in that light? How many have
refused to live in harmony with the counsels of God! As a people, we should
make advancement proportionate to the light received. It is our duty to un-
derstand and respect the principles of health reform. On the subject of tem-
perance we should be in advance of all other people; and yet there are among
us well-instructed members of the church, and even ministers of the gospel,
who have little respect for the light that God has given upon this subject.
They eat as they please and work as they please."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 158.

o Wednesday
AN URGENT CALL April 6
7. What call in reference to health reform is directed to every church
member? Romans 12: 1.

"The Lord calls for volunteers to enter His army. Sickly men and women
need to become health reformers."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 39.
"God calls upon every church member to dedicate his life unreservedly
to the Lord's service. He calls for decided reformation. All creation is groan-
ing under the curse. God's people should place themselves where they will
grow in grace, being sanctified, body, soul, and spirit, by the truth. When
they break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will have a
clearer perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful change
will be seen in the religious experience."- Ibid., p. 34.

8. Where does genuine health reform begin? Why? Proverbs 14:30

(first part); Mark 7:21-23.

"Circumstances cannot work reforms. Christianity proposes a reforma-

tion in the heart. What Christ works within, will be worked out under the
dictation of a converted intellect. The plan of beginning outside and trying to
work inward has always failed, and always will fail. God's plan with you is to
begin at the very seat of all difficulties, the heart, and then from out of the
heart will issue the principles of righteousness; the reformation will be out-
ward as well as inward." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 35.
o Thursday
A TIME TO CHANGE April 7

9. What is one of our greatest needs where there has been a neglect to
follow the light on health reform progressively? James 4:8, 9.

-11-
"There is need of decided changes. It is time for us to humble our
proud, self-willed hearts, and seek the Lord while He may be found. As a
people we need to humble our hearts before God; for the scars of incon-
sistency are on our practice."-Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 40.

10. What evidence shows that Christ was a strict health reformer
among men? 1 Peter 1:19; 2:22.

"Jesus was an earnest, constant worker. Never lived there among men
another so weighted with responsibilities. Never another carried so heavy a
burden of the world's sorrow and sin. Never another toiled with such self-
consuming zeal for the good of men. Yet His was a life of health. Physically
as well as spiritually He was represented by the sacrificial lamb, 'without
blemish and without spot.' 1 Peter 1:19. In body as in soul He was an exam-
ple of what God designed all humanity to be through obedience to His laws."
- The Ministry of Healing, p. 51.

D Friday
THOUGHT AND REVIEW QUESTIONS April 8

a. How are mind, soul, and body to be developed to God's highest

ideal, as a result of following all the laws of health?

b. Why is consistency important when following the health reform

principles? Do we have reason to believe that we have not been con-
sistent health reformers?

c. Could it be that we have been concentrating too much on conform-

ing outwardly, while neglecting to allow the grace of Christ to work
an inward change in our hearts?

d. What specific changes do we need to make in our health reform

practices to follow more closely in the footprints of our self-denying
Master?

e. How does this lesson bring us closer to Christ?

Lesson 3 Sabbath, April 16, 1994

"What Doest Thou Here, Elijah?"

"Not a pause for a moment in His presence, but personal contact
with Christ, to sit down in companionship with Him-this is our
need." - Education, p. 261.

KEY TEXT: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

D Sunday
GOD REVEALS HIMSELF April 10

1. Why did God ask Elijah the reason for his being at mount Horeb
and what answer did the prophet give? 1 Kings 19:9, 10.

"Often those who suffer reproach or persecution for their faith are
tempted to think themselves forsaken by God. In the eyes of men they are in
the minority. To all appearance their enemies triumph over them. But let
them not violate their conscience. He who has suffered in their behalf, and
has borne their sorrows and afflictions, has not forsaken them."-Christ's Ob-
ject Lessons, p. 172.

2. How did God reveal Himself to His discouraged servant? 1 Kings

19:11, 12.

"Not in mighty manifestations of divine power, but by 'a still small

voice,' did God choose to reveal Himself to His servant. He desired to teach
Elijah that it is not always the work that makes the greatest demonstration
that is most successful in accomplishing His purpose. While Elijah waited
for the revelation of the Lord, a tempest rolled, the lightnings flashed, and a
devouring fire swept by; but God was not in all this. Then there came a still,
small voice, and the prophet covered his head before the presence of the
Lord. His petulance was silenced, his spirit softened and subdued. He now
knew that a quiet trust, a firm reliance on God, would ever find for him a
present help in time of need."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 168, 169.

D Monday
THE STILL, SMALL VOICE April 11

3. What lesson does the presence of God through a still, small voice
have for us? Isaiah 30:21.

-13 -
"It is not always the most learned presentation of God's truth that con-
victs and converts the soul. Not by eloquence or logic are men's hearts
reached, but by the sweet influences of the Holy Spirit, which operate quiet-
ly yet surely in transforming and developing character. It is the still, small
voice of the Spirit of God that has power to change the heart." -Prophets and
Kings, p. 169.
"There is need of personal labor for the souls of the lost. In Christlike
sympathy we should come close to men individually, and seek to awaken
their interest in the great things of eternal life. Their hearts may be as hard
as the beaten highway, and apparently it may be a useless effort to present
the Saviour to them; but while logic may fail to move, and argument be
powerless to convince, the love of Christ, revealed in personal ministry, may
soften the stony heart, so that the seed of truth can take root." -Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 57.

4. How can we hear the still, small voice speaking to us? Psalms 37:3,
7; 46:10.

"We must individually hear Him speaking to the heart. When every
other voice is hushed, and in quietness we wait before Him, the silence of the
soul makes more distinct the voice of God. He bids us, 'Be still, and know
that I am God.' Psalm 46:10. Here alone can true rest be found. And this is
the effectual preparation for all who labor for God. Amid the hurrying
throng, and the strain of life's intense activities, the soul that is thus
refreshed will be surrounded with an atmosphere of light and peace. The life
will breathe out fragrance, and will reveal a divine power that will reach
men's hearts."-The Desire of Ages, p. 363.

o Tuesday
PERSONAL COMMUNION April 12

5. How can we receive the blessings that God has in store for us?
Isaiah 55:3 (first part). How can we fail of receiving the blessings of
real communion with God even in our devotions?

"Many, even in their seasons of devotion, fail of receiving the blessing

of real communion with God. They are in too great haste. With hurried steps
they press through the circle of Christ's loving presence, pausing perhaps a
moment within the sacred precincts, but not waiting for counsel. They have
no time to remain with the divine Teacher. With their burdens they return to
their work.
"These workers can never attain the highest success until they learn
the secret of strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, to
wait upon God for a renewal of physical, mental, and spiritual power."-
Education, pp. 260, 261.

6. Wherein can we find spiritual strength, peace, and assurance?

Isaiah 30:15; 32:17.

-14 -
"We need a calm waiting upon God. The need of this is imperious. It is
not the noise and bustle we make in the world which proves our usefulness.
See how silently God works! We do not hear the noise of His steps, and yet
He is walking about us, laboring for our good."- The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1144.
"The Lord wants human beings to take time to rest, time to think of
and appreciate heavenly things. Those who do not value the things of heaven
sufficiently to give time to them will at last lose all." -Ibid.

D Wednesday
ELIJAH'S NEW ASSIGNMENTS April 13

7. How did God instruct Elijah to continue the work of reformation?

1 Kings 19:15-17.

"The Lord answered Elijah that the wrongdoers in Israel should not go
unpunished. Men were to be especially chosen to fulfill the divine purpose in
the punishment of the idolatrous kingdom. There was stern work to be done,
that all might be given opportunity to take their position on the side of the
true God. Elijah himself was to return to Israel, and share with others the
burden of bringing about a reformation."-Prophets and Kings, p. 169.

8. What fact did God impress upon Elijah to show him that his com-
plaints, as expressed in 1 Kings 19:10, were not justified? 1 Kings
19:18.

"Elijah had thought that he alone in Israel was a worshiper of the true
God. But He who reads the hearts of all revealed to the prophet that there
were many others who, through the long years of apostasy, had remained
true to Him. 'I have left Me,' God said, 'seven thousand in Israel, all the
knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not
kissed him.' "-Prophets and Kings, p. 170.

D Thursday
THE 7,000 TODAY April 14

9. What parallel exists between the days of Elijah and our time?
Romans 11:5.

"[The] apostasy, widespread as it has come to be, is not universal. Not

all in the world are lawless and sinful; not all have taken sides with the
enemy. God has many thousands who have not bowed the knee to Baal,
many who long to understand more fully in regard to Christ and the law,
many who are hoping against hope that Jesus will come soon to end the reign
of sin and death. And there are many who have been worshiping Baal igno-
rantly, but with whom the Spirit of God is still striving." -Prophets and Kings,
p. 171.

-15 -
"Let no man attempt to number Israel today, but let everyone have a
heart of flesh, a heart of tender sympathy, a heart that, like the heart of
Christ, reaches out for the salvation of a lost world."-Ibid., p. 189.

10. What methods does Satan use to prevent us from seeking God's
faithful ones in the world and the fallen churches? Luke 21:34;
Mark 4:19.

"Much depends on the unceasing activity of those who are true and
loyal, and for this reason Satan puts forth every possible effort to thwart the
divine purpose to be wrought out through the obedient. He causes some to
lose sight of their high and holy mission, and to become satisfied with the
pleasures of this life. He leads them to settle down at ease, or, for the sake of
greater worldly advantages, to remove from places where they might be a
power for good. Others he causes to flee in discouragement from duty,
because of opposition or persecution. But all such are regarded by Heaven
with tenderest pity. To every child of God whose voice the enemy of souls
had succeeded in silencing, the question is addressed, 'What doest thou
here?' I commissioned you to go into all the world and preach the gospel, to
prepare a people for the day of God. Why are you here? Who sent you?"
-Prophets and Kings, pp. 171, 172.

still, small voice?

c. Let us review the times when, 'in discouragement and loneliness,

God sent human companionship and help to us.

"Compel Them to Come In"

"If the servants of God will walk with Him in faith; He will give
power to their message. They will be enabled so to present His love
and the danger of rejecting the grace of God that men will be con-
strained to accept the gospel." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 236.

OUR DUTY April 17

1. What plan does the Lord have for the honest souls that are scat-
tered in the world and the churches? Ezekiel 34:11-16; John
10:16. What will be the result of doing our duty?

"As those who have an understanding of Bible truth try to seek out the
men and women who are longing for light, angels of God will attend them.
And where angels go, none need fear to move forward. As a result of the
faithful efforts of consecrated workers, many will be turned from idolatry to
the worship of the living God. Many will cease to pay homage to man-made
institutions and will take their stand fearlessly on the side of God and His
law."-Prophets and Kings, p. 171.
"We are not to wait for souls to come to us; we must seek them out
where they are. When the word has been preached in the pulpit, the work
has but just begun. There are multitudes who will never be reached by the
gospel unless it is carried to them."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 229.

2. How can individuals and families be personally involved in seeking

out the honest ones? Luke 14:23. How will their efforts be rewarded?

"Brethren who wish to change their location, who have the glory of God
in view, and feel that individual responsibility rests upon them to do others
good, to benefit and save souls for whom Christ withheld not His precious
life, should move into towns and villages where there is but little or no light
and where they can be of real service and bless others with their labor and
experience.... The brethren should not flock together because it is more
agreeable to them, but should seek to fulfill their high calling to do others
good, to be instrumental in the salvation of at least one soul. But more may
be saved than one."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 115.

LESSONS FROM THE PAST April 18

3. What can we learn from Christ about reaching those in darkness?

Hosea 11:8 (first part). How effective is His method?

"Although His love is driven back by the stubborn heart, [Christ]

returns to plead with greater force, 'Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.'
The wiiming power of His love compels souls to come in."-Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 235.
"Thousands can be reached in the most simple and humble way. The
most intellectual, those who are looked upon as the world's most gifted men
and women, are often refreshed by the simple words of one who loves God,
and who can speak of that love as naturally as the worldling speaks of the
things that interest him most deeply." -Ibid., p. 232.

4. What lesson should we learn from the tendency of the early Chris-
tians to colonize in Jerusalem? Acts 8: 1. What are two major problems
resulting from colonization into large churches and institutions?

"The policy of consolidation, wherever pursued, tends to the exaltation

of the human in place of the divine. Those who bear responsibilities in the
different institutions look to the central authority for guidance and support.
As the sense of personal responsibility is weakened, they lose the highest
and most precious of all human experiences, the constant dependence of the
soul upon God. Not realizing their need, they fail of maintaining that con-
stant watchfulness and prayer, that constant surrender to God, which alone
can enable men to hear and to obey the teaching of His Holy Spirit."-
Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 172.
D Tuesday
TREES PLANTED TOO CLOSELY April 19
5. How does Christ illustrate His plan for His church? Matthew 5: 13-
16. How does colonization hinder this plan?

"God designs that His people shall be the light of the world, the salt of
the earth. The plan of gathering together in large numbers, to compose a
large church, has contracted their influence, and narrowed down their
sphere of usefulness, and is literally putting their light under a bushel. ...
The plan of colonizing, or moving from different localities where there is but
little strength or influence, and concentrating the influence of many in one
locality, is removing the light from places where God would have it shine."-
Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 633.
" 'True missionary workers will not colonize. God's people are to be
pilgrims and strangers on the earth. The investment of large sums of money
in the building up of the work in one place is not in the order of God. Plants
are to be made in many places. Schools and sanitariums are to be established
in places where there is now nothing to represent the truth. These interests

-18 -
are not to be established for the purpose of making money, but for the pur-
pose of spreading the truth.' "- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 215.
6. How does colonization in one place affect our spiritual life? In what
sense are the righteous compared to the palm trees? Psalm
92:12-15.

"Trees that are crowded closely together do not grow healthfully and
sturdily. The gardener transplants them that they may have room to develop.
A similar work would benefit many of the members of large churches. They
need to be placed where their energies will be called forth in active Christian
effort. They are losing their spiritual life, becoming dwarfed and inefficient,
for want of self-sacrificing labor for others. Transplanted to some mission-
ary field, they would grow strong and vigorous."-The Ministry of Healing,
p. 152.
D Wednesday
WISE NURSERYMEN NEEDED April 20
7. How can those in leading positions help to open new fields and pre-
vent future colonization? Matthew 22:9; Isaiah 54:2.

"All the preaching in the world will not make men feel deeply the need
of the perishing souls around them. Nothing will so arouse in men and
women a self-sacrificing zeal as to send them forth into new fields to work
for those in darkness. Prepare workers to go out into the highways and
hedges. Do not call men and women to the great center, encouraging them to
leave churches that need their aid. Men must learn to bear responsibilities.
Not one in a hundred among us is doing anything beyond engaging in com-
mon, worldly enterprises. Weare not half awake to the worth of the souls
for whom Christ died.
"We need wise nurserymen, who will transplant trees to different
localities and give them advantages that will enable them to grow. It is the
positive duty of God's people to go into the regions beyond."- Testimonies,
vol. 8, pp. 147, 148.
8. What practical method can be used to move lay members to new
locations and thus establish new centers of worship? What example
did Abraham leave for us? Hebrews 11:8-10.

"Oh, how I seem to hear the voice day and night, 'Go forward; add new
territory; enter new territory with the tent, and give the last message of
warning to the world. There is no time to be lost. Leave My memorial in
every place where ye shall go. My Spirit will go before you, and the glory of
the Lord shall be your rearward.' "-Evangelism, p. 61.
D Thursday
MOTIVATION April 21
9. What should motivate lay members to sacrifice convenience and
move to new locations, carrying the message of salvation? Psalm
126:5,6; Isaiah 55:11, 12.

-19 -
"In view of what Christ has done for us, and what He has suffered for
sinners, we should, out of pure, disinterested love for souls, imitate His ex-
ample by sacrificing our own pleasure and convenience for their good. The
joy set before Christ, which sustained Him in all His sufferings, was the
salvation of poor sinners. This should be our joy and the spur of our ambition
in the cause of our Master. In so doing we please God and manifest our love
and devotion to Him as His servants."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 115, 116.

10. How did Christ exemplify in His life the importance of moving to
new locations? Matthew 4:23; Luke 13:22.

"The Majesty of heaven journeyed from place to place on foot, teaching

out of doors by the seaside, and in the mountain. Thus He drew the people to
Him. Are we greater than our Lord? Was His way the right way? Have we
been working unwisely in maintaining simplicity and godliness? We have not
learned our lesson yet as we should. Christ declares, Take My yoke of
restraint and obedience upon you, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For
My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."-Evangelism, p. 58.

PREPARING A PEOPLE April 24

1. Once we find the "7,000" faithful souls that have not bowed their
knee to Baal, what is to be our mission for them? Isaiah 40:3, 4.

"In this age, just prior to the second coming of Christ in the clouds of
heaven, God calls for men who will prepare a people to stand in the great day
of the Lord."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1184.
"The Lord is coming. We hear the footsteps of an approaching God, as
He comes to punish the world for its iniquity. We are to prepare the way for
Him by acting our part in getting a people ready for that great day." -Evange-
lism, p. 219.

2. What should be our message? To whom is this message to be first

addressed? Amos 4:12.

"Our message is not to be one of peace and safety. As a people who

believe in Christ's soon appearing, we have a definite message to bear-
'Prepare to meet thy God.' "- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 4, p. 1184.
"Our work is to proclaim the commandments of God and the testimony
of Jesus Christ. 'Prepare to meet thy God' (Amos 4:12), is the warning to be
given to the world. It is a warning to us individually." -Selected Messages, book 2,
p.116.

CHURCH MEMBERS, AWAKEI April 25
3. What personal preparation must church members make before
they can be ready to sound the message of Christ's coming? Mat-
thew 24:44.

"The great burden of every soul should be, Is my heart renewed? Is my

soul transformed? Are my sins pardoned through faith in Christ? Have I been
born again?" -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 117.
"Let church members bear in mind that the fact that their names are
registered on the church books will not save them. They must show them-
selves approved of God, workmen that need not be ashamed. Day by day
they are to build their characters in accordance with Christ's directions. 'I
They are to abide in Him, constantly exercising faith in Him. Thus they will
grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ-wholesome, cheer-
ful, grateful Christians, led by God into clearer and still clearer light. If this
is not their experience, they will be among those whose voices will one day
be raised in the bitter lamentation: 'The harvest is past, the summer is end-
ed, and my soul is not saved!"- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 48.
"Go to your rest at night with every sin confessed. Thus we did when in
1844 we expected to meet our Lord. And now this great event is nearer than
when we first believed."-Ibid.
4. What should God's people be doing now with their time? John 5:39;
Luke 21:36; 10:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

"The law of God should be loved and honored by His true people now
more than ever before. There is the most imperative necessity of urging the
injunction of Christ upon the minds and hearts of all believers, men and
women, youth and children: 'Search the Scriptures.' Study your Bible as you
have never studied it before. Unless you arise to a higher, holier state in your
religious life, you will not be ready for the appearing of our Lord. As great
light has been given, God expects corresponding zeal, faithfulness, and
devotion on the part of His people. There must be more spirituality, a deeper
consecration to God, and a zeal in His work that has never yet been reached.
Much time should be spent in prayer, that our garments of character may be
washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 717.

PROMPTED BY ELIJAH'S ZEAL April 26
5. What can we learn from John the Baptist as we present the message
of Christ's return? Luke 1:17; Revelation 14:7.

"In this time of well-nigh universal apostasy, God calls upon His mes-
sengers to proclaim His law in the spirit and power of Elias. As John the
Baptist, in preparing a people for Christ's first advent, called their attention
to the Ten Commandments, so we are to give, with no uncertain sound, the
message: 'Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is
come.' With the earnestness that characterized Elijah the prophet and John

- 22-
the Baptist, we are to strive to prepare the way for Christ's second advent."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1184.

6. While we must rouse the people with zeal and earnestness, what
other important element is necessary? Why? Psalm 5:11; 1 Thes-
salonians 5: 16.
"The Lord is coming. Lift up your heads and rejoice. Oh, we would
think that those who hear the joyful news, who claim to love Jesus, would be
filled with joy unutterable and full of glory. This is the good, the joyful news
which should electrify every soul, which should be repeated in our homes,
and told to those whom we meet on the street. What more joyful news can
be communicated!" -Evangelism, p. 218.
D Wednesday
BEWARE OF DANGER April 27
7. What dangerous attitude may exist among long-time Sabbath-
keepers, as they wait for the return of their Lord? Luke 12:45 (first
part).
"Weare now upon the very borders of the eternal world, but it is the
purpose of the adversary of souls to lead us to put far off the close of time.
Satan will in every conceivable manner assail those who profess to be the
commandment-keeping people of God and to be waiting for the second
appearing of our Saviour in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
He will lead as many as possible to put off the evil day and become in spirit
like the world, imitating its customs."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 306.
8. Although we must be daily prepared to meet our Lord, how are we
expected to handle our daily duties and business transactions?
Luke 16:10.
"Belief in the near coming of the Son of man in the clouds of heaven will
not cause the true Christian to become neglectful and careless of the ordi-
nary business of life. The waiting ones who look for the soon appearing of
Christ will not be idle, but diligent in business. Their work will not be done
carelessly and dishonestly, but with fidelity, promptness, and thoroughness.
Those who flatter themselves that careless inattention to the things of this
life is an evidence of their spirituality and of their separation from the world
are under a great deception. Their veracity, faithfulness, and integrity are
tested and proved in temporal things. If they are faithful in that which is
least they will be faithful in much."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 309.

IT WILL TAKE ALL April 28
9. In what activities is the heavenly host involved during this solemn
time of preparation? 1 Samuel 2:3 (last part); Daniel 7:9, 10.

"I have seen an angel standing with scales in his hands weighing the
thoughts and interest of the people of God, especially the young. In one scale

- 23-
were the thoughts and interests tending heavenward; in the other were the
thoughts and interest tending to earth. And in this scale were thrown all the
reading of storybooks, thoughts of dress and show, vanity, pride, etc. Oh,
what a solemn moment! the angels of God standing with scales, weighing the
thoughts of His professed children-those who claim to be dead to the world
and alive to God. The scale filled with thoughts of earth, vanity, and pride
quickly went down, notwithstanding weight after weight rolled from the
scale. The one with the thoughts and interest tending to heaven went quick-
ly up as the other went down, and oh, how light it was! ... Said the angel:
'Can such enter heaven? No, no, never. Tell them the hope they now possess
is vain, and unless they speedily repent, and obtain salvation, they "must
perish.' "- Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 124, 125.

10. What will it cost us to enter heaven? Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:17.

"Christ became one flesh with us, in order that we might become one
spirit with Him. It is by virtue of this union that we are to come forth from
the grave-not merely as a manifestation of the power of Christ, but because,
through faith, His life has become ours. Those who see Christ in His true
character, and receive Him into the heart, have everlasting life. It is through
the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God, received into the
heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternal."- The Desire of Ages, p. 388.
"Heaven will be cheap enough, if we obtain it through suffering. We
must deny self all along the way, die to self daily, let Jesus alone appear, and
keep His glory continually in view."-Early Writings, p. 67.
"A form of godliness will not save any. All must have a deep and living

RESTLESSNESS AND APOSTASY May 1

1. What conditions are evident among the professed people of God to-
day? 2 Corinthians 11:3. Why is there restlessness and no peace
with so many? Psalm 38:3 (last part).

"Weare in continual danger of getting above the simplicity of the

gospel. There is an intense desire on the part of many to startle the world
with something original, that shall lift the people into a state of spiritual
ecstasy, and change the present order of experience. There is certainly great
need of a change in the present order of experience; for the sacredness of
present truth is not realized as it should be, but the change we need is a
change of heart, and can only be obtained by seeking God individually for
His blessing, by pleading with Him for His power, by fervently praying that
His grace may come upon us, and that our characters may be transformed.
This is the change we need today, and for the attainment of this experience
we should exercise persevering energy and manifest heartfelt earnestness."
-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 23.

2. How has this condition affected the Laodicean ministry? Isaiah

30:9-11; 47:10. What is the result? Hosea 4:6-9.

"A new order of things has come into the ministry. There is a desire to
pattern after other churches, and simplicity and humility are almost
unknown. The young ministers seek to be original, and to introduce new
ideas and new plans for labor. Some open revival meetings, and by this

- 25-
means call large numbers into the church. But when the excitement is over,
where are the converted ones? Repentance and confession of sin are not
seen. The sinner is entreated to believe in Christ and accept Him, without
regard to his past life of sin and rebellion. The heart is not broken. There is
no contrition of soul. The supposed converted ones have not fallen upon the
Rock, Christ Jesus."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 18, 19.

o Monday
FAITH AND OBEDIENCE VS. SPLENDOR May 2

3. How only can God's people have personal and corporate rest?
Isaiah 48: 18. What should ministers be preaching?

"The Lord desires His servants today to preach the old gospel doctrine,
sorrow for sin, repentance, and confession. We want old-fashioned sermons,
old-fashioned customs, old-fashioned fathers and mothers in Israel. The sin-
ner must be labored for, perseveringly, earnestly, wisely, until he shall see
that he is a transgressor of God's law, and shall exercise repentance toward
God, and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 19.

4. When the splendor of religious institutions is exalted above the

power of faith and obedience, of what is this attitude a sure indica-
tion? Hosea 10:1; 8:14.

"[God] taught His church to rely, not on worldly rank and splendor, but
on the power of faith and obedience. The favor of God is above the riches of
gold and silver. The power of His Spirit is of inestimable value.
"Never are we to rely upon worldly recognition and rank. Never are we,
in the establishment of institutions, to try to compete with worldly institu-
tions in size or splendor....
"The Lord will guide all who humbly walk with Him. Humble men who
trust in Him will be the most successful workers in His cause. We shall gain
the victory, not by erecting massive buildings, in rivalry with our enemies,
but by cherishing a Christlike spirit of meekness and lowliness. Better far
the cross and disappointed hopes, than to live with princes and forfeit heav-
en. Truth will be bitterly opposed, but never will it lose its vitality."-

"A BEDLAM OF NOISE" May 3

5. Why should God's people keep clear of the influences of the world?
John 15:19; 17:15; James 4:4.

"Y ou have thought that if we would be less exclusive and would mingle
more with the world, their opinions and impressions of us would be greatly
modified. But no greater mistake could affect the human mind."- Testi-
monies, vol. 5, p. 433.

6. What type of worship services were seen by E. G. White as taking
place among believers in the third angel's message just before the
close of probation? What warnings apply to spurious charismatic
manifestations? Amos 5:23; Isaiah 8:19; 1 Corinthians 14:9,23.

"The things you have described as taking place in Indiana, the Lord has
shown me would take place just before the close of probation. Every un-
couth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums,
music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused
that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the
moving of the Holy Spirit.
"The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam
of noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for
making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, ennobling, sanctifying
truth for this time.... A bedlam of noise shocks the senses and perverts
that which if conducted aright might be a blessing. The powers of satanic
agencies blend with the din and noise, to have a carnival, and this is termed
the Holy Spirit's working." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 36.

MIND CONTROL May4

7. How is Satan infiltrating congregations through the use of psychol-

ogy and hypnosis? Colossians 2:8. How only can we be safe from
this type of mind control? Isaiah 26:3; 1 Peter 1:13.

"This entering in of Satan through the sciences is well devised.

Through the channel of phrenology, psychology, and mesmerism, he comes
more directly to the people of this generation, and works with that power
which is to characterize his efforts near the close of probation. The minds of
thousands have thus been poisoned, and led into infidelity." -Selected Mes-
sages, book 2, p. 351.
"It is dangerous for anyone, no matter how good a man he is, to en-
deavor to influence another human mind to come under the control of his
mind. Let me tell you that the mind cure is a satanic science." -Ibid., p. 349.

8. How dangerous is it to study or be manipulated by the sciences

dealing with the mind? Romans 1:28; Isaiah 3:12 (last part).

"The whole philosophy of this science [hypnosis] is a masterpiece of

satanic deception. For your souls' sake, cut loose from everything of this
order. Every time you put into the mind of another person ideas concerning
this science, that you may gain control of his mind, you are on Satan's
ground, decidedly cooperating with him. For your souls' sake, break loose
from this snare of the enemy."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 349, 350.
"We do not ask you to place yourself under the control of any man's
mind. The mind cure is the most awful science which has ever been advo-

sonate Christ, and work miracles?" -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 58.
"False doctrines will sap the foundations of many, because they have
not learned to discern truth from error. Our only safeguard against the wiles
of Satan is to study the Scriptures diligently, to have an intelligent under-
standing of the reasons of our faith, and faithfully to perform every known
duty." -Ibid.

GOD'S CALL FOR SEPARATION MayS
1. In view of some of the problems besetting the professed people of
God (including Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Celebration, Ecu-
menism, New Theology), what call is given to the true believers?
Why? 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.
"Let the watchmen on the walls of Zion not join with those who are
making of none effect the truth as it is in Christ. Let them not join the con-
federacy of infidelity, popery, and Protestantism in exalting tradition above
Scripture, reason above revelation, and human talent above the divine influ-
ence and the vital power of godliness."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 4, pp. 1141, 1142.
"You are exhorted to touch not the unclean thing; for in touching this,
you will yourself become unclean. It is impossible for you to unite with those
who are corrupt, and still remain pure."-Ibid., vol. 6, p. 1102.
"The angel is to place a mark upon the forehead of all who are sepa-
rated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel will follow, to slay ut-
terly both old and young."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 505.
2. What can be expected by those who want to separate from sin and
sinners? Luke 6:22. How are they to respond to ridicule and perse-
cution? Luke 9:23.
"If you go forward toward heaven, the world will rub hard against you.
At every step you will have to urge your way against Satan and his evil
angels, and against all who transgress God's law."-The SDA Bible Commen-
tary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1102.
"The satanic agencies are constantly at work, sowing and watering the
seeds of rebellion against the law of God, and Satan is gathering souls under
his black banner of revolt. He forms a confederacy with human beings to
contend against purity and holiness."-Ibid., vol. 4, p. 1141.

STANDING FOR TRUTH May 9

3. As honest souls see the apostasy in the nominal churches, how are
they to respond before coming out? Jude 3; Proverbs 1:10.

"Dare to be a Daniel. Dare to stand alone. Thus, as did Moses, you will
endure the seeing of Him who is invisible. But a cowardly and silent reserve
before evil associates, while you listen to their devices, makes you one with
them."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 3, p. 1155. I.
I'We should never give sanction to sin by our words or our deeds, our
silence or our presence."- The Desire of Ages, p. 152. •

4. Why must the true followers of Christ separate from any denomina-
tion that is in apostasy? Amos 3:3.

"To yoke up with those who are unconsecrated, and yet be loyal to the
truth, is simply impossible. We cannot unite with those who are serving
themselves, who are working on worldly plans, and not lose our connection
with the heavenly Counselor."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 5, p. 1086.
"Even if they have to walk as did Enoch-with God alone-his children
must separate from those who do not obey Him, who show that they are not
in vital connection with Him."-Ibid., vol. 2, p. 1037.

LESSONS FROM CHRIST'S SEPARATION May 10

5. How did Christ illustrate His separation from the Jewish church?
Mark 12:1-9. How does the parable of the vineyard apply to the
"church in this generation"?

"As a people the Jews had failed of fulfilling God's purpose, and the
vineyard was taken from them. The privileges they had abused, the work
they had slighted, was entrusted to others.
"The parable of the vineyard applies not alone to the Jewish nation. It
has a lesson for us. The church in this generation has been endowed by God
with great privileges and blessings, and He expects corresponding returns."
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 296.

6. What lesson does Christ's separation from the Jewish church have
for the faithful remnant century after century? Matthew 15: 14.

"Again and again the history of Christ's withdrawal from Judea has
been repeated. When the Reformers preached the word of God, they had no
thought of separating themselves from the established church; but the reli-
gious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it were forced to
seek another class, who were longing for the truth."- The Desire ofAges, p. 232.

LESSONS FROM HISTORY May 11
7. What lessons about separation can we learn from Bible history?
Genesis 12:1; Acts 13:46; Romans 15:4.

"In order that God might qualify him for his great work as the keeper of
the sacred oracles, Abraham must be separated from the associations of his
early life. The influence of kindred and friends would interfere with the
training which the Lord purposed to give His servant. Now that Abraham
was, in a special sense, connected with heaven, he must dwell among
strangers. His character must be peculiar, differing from all the world."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 126.
"The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking
similarity in every great reformation or religious movement. The principles
of God's dealing with men are ever the same. The important movements of
the present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of the
church in former ages has lessons of great value for our own time."- The
Great Controversy, p. 343.

8. Why did the early Christians, the Waldenses and the Reformers,
separate from the churches they loved? Acts 5:29.

"After a long and severe conflict, the faithful few decided to dissolve all
union with the apostate church if she still refused to free herself from false-
hood and idolatry. They saw that separation was an absolute necessity if
they would obey the word of God."-The Great Controversy, p. 45.
"For centuries the churches of Piedmont maintained their indepen-
dence; but the time came at last when Rome insisted upon their submission.
After ineffectual struggles against her tyranny, the leaders of these chur-
ches relunctantly acknowledged the supremacy of the power to which the
whole world seemed to pay homage. There were some, however, who refused
to yield to the authority of pope or prelate. They were determined to main-
tain their allegiance to God and to preserve the purity and simplicity of their
faith. A separation took place."-Ibid., p. 64.
"It was not without a terrible struggle with himself that Luther decided
upon a final separation from the church."-Ibid., p. 143.

THE CANDLESTICK REMOVED May 12

9. How will those who have rejected Christ's message (Revelation

3:15-20) treat the light they once treasured? Isaiah 50:11.

"In rejecting Christ the Jewish people committed the unpardonable sin;
and by refusing the invitation of mercy, we may commit the same error."-
The Desire of Ages, pp. 324, 325.
"After rejecting light, [those who have been blinded by the enemy] will
originate theories which they will call 'light,' but which the Lord calls,

- 31-
'Sparks of their own kindling,' by which they will direct their steps."-The
Review and Herald, December 13, 1892.
"The cause of Christ will be betrayed. Those who have had the light of
truth, and have enjoyed its blessings, but who have turned away from it, will
fight down the Spirit of God. Inspired with a spirit from beneath, they will
tear down that which they once built up, and show to all reasonable, God-
fearing souls that they can not be trusted. They may lay claim to truth and
righteousness, but their spirit and works will testify that they are betrayers
of their Lord. The attributes of Satan they call the movings of the Holy
Spirit." -Ibid., May 24, 1898.

10. What will happen to a denomination which refuses to heed the

voice of reproof and rebuke? Luke 20: 15, 16; Revelation 2:5.

"But 0, sad picture! those who do not submit to the influence of the Ho-
ly Spirit soon lose the blessings received when they acknowledged the truth
as from Heaven. They fall into a cold, spiritless formality; they lose their in-
terest in perishing souls: they have 'left their first love.' And Christ says un-
to them, 'Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and
do the first works: or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy
candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.' He will take his Holy Spirit
from the church, and give it to others who will appreciate it.
. "There is no greater evidence that those who have received great light
do not appreciate that light, than is given by their refusal to let their light
shine upon those who are in darkness, and devoting their time and energies
in celebrating forms and ceremonies. Thoughts of the inner work, the
necessary purity of heart, are not entertained. The absence of harmony with
God becomes apparent. The light grows dim, goes out; the candlestick has
been removed."- The Review and Herald, July 16, 1895.

CHRIST'S METHOD OF REFORMATION May 15

1. How is the call for separation at the same time a call for unity? John
17:14,20,21.

"Christ calls for unity. But He does not call for us to unify on wrong
practices. The God of heaven draws a sharp contrast between pure, elevat-
ing, ennobling truth and false, misleading doctrines. He calls sin and impen-
itence by the right name. He does not gloss over wrongdoirig with a coat of
untempered mortar. I urge our brethren to unify upon a true, scriptural
basis." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 175.

2. What type of fruit does Christ expect from true reformers? Gala-
tians 5:22, 23.

"Christ hungers to receive from His vineyard the fruit of holiness and
unselfishness. He looks for the principles of love and goodness. Not all the
beauty of art can bear comparison with the beauty of temper and character
to be revealed in those who are Christ's representatives. It is the atmosphere
of grace which surrounds the soul of the believer, the Holy Spirit working
upon mind and heart, that makes him a savor of life unto life, and enables
God to bless his work.
"A congregation may be the poorest in the land. It may be without the
attraction of any outward show; but if the members possess the principles of
the character of Christ, they will have His joy in their souls. Angels will unite
with them in their worship. The praise and thanksgiving from grateful
hearts will ascend to God as a sweet oblation."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 298.

A REFORMATION NEEDED May 16

3. Under what circumstances, connected with what experience, was

the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement brought into exis-
tence? Psalm 11:3; 2 Timothy 3:12; John 16:2.

"The Lord Jesus will always have a chosen people to serve Him. When
the Jewish people rejected Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them the
kingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. God will continue to work on
this principle with every branch of His work. When a church proves un-
faithful to the work of the Lord, whatever their position may be, however
high and sacred their calling, the Lord can no longer work with them. Others
are then chosen to bear important responsibilities."- The Upward Look, p. 131.

4. What was the original position of the church with reference to par-
ticipation in war? What principle will true Christians take to heart
when asked if they are ready to bear arms (which means breaking
the commandments of God)? Luke 9:56; Matthew 5:43, 44; Romans
12:18-21.

"I was shown that God's people, who are His peculiar treasure, cannot
engage in this perplexing war, for it is opposed to every principle of their
faith. In the army they cannot obey the truth and at the same time obey the
requirements of their officers. There would be a continual violation of con-
science."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361.

THE MISSION OF REFORMERS May 17

5. What are the characteristics and mission of those who will bear the
banner of the third angel's message? Isaiah 58:8-14.

"Here [Isaiah 58:8-14] are given the characteristics of those who shall
be reformers, who will bear the banner of the third angel's message, those
who avow themselves God's commandment-keeping people, and who honor
God, and are earnestly engaged, in the sight of all the universe, in building up
the old waste places. Who is it that calls them, The repairers of the breach,
The restorers of paths to dwell in? It is God. Their names are registered in
heaven as reformers, restorers, as raising the foundations of many genera-
tions."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1151.

6. What is the basis of all true reform and how does it relate to our
mission as reformers? Isaiah 8:20.

"There is need of true reformers, who will point transgressors to the

great Lawgiver and teach them that 'the law of the Lord is perfect, convert-
ing the soul.' Psalm 19:7. There is need of men mighty in the Scriptures,
men whose every word and act exalts the statutes of Jehovah, men who seek
to strengthen faith."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 623, 624.

RECOGNIZING TRUE REFORMERS May 18

7. How has the spirit of Elijah activated reformers throughout history

to defend the law of God, even when threatened with disfellow-
shipment and/or martyrdom? Romans 8:31. How does history con-
tinue to repeat itself?

"The Spirit of God came upon [the reformers] as it came upon Elijah,
moving him to rebuke the sins of a wicked king and an apostate people; they
could not refrain from preaching the plain utterances of the Bible-
doctrines which they had been reluctant to present. They were impelled to
zealously declare the truth and the danger which threatened souls. The words
which the Lord gave them they uttered, fearless of consequences, and the
people were compelled to hear the warning."- The Great Controversy, p. 606.
"False religion may prevail, iniquity may abound, the love of many may
wax cold, the cross of Calvary may be lost sight of, and darkness, like the
pall of death, may spread over the world; the whole force of the popular cur-
rent may be turned against the truth; plot after plot may be formed to over-
throw the people of God; but in the hour of greatest peril the God of Elijah
will raise up human instrumentalities to bear a message that will not be
silenced."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 186, 187.

8. What character qualities will be evident in the lives of all true

reformers? Matthew 7:16; 2 Peter 1:5-8.

"Reformers are not destroyers. They will never seek to ruin those who
do not harmonize with their plans and assimilate to them. Reformers must
advance, not retreat. They must be decided, firm, resolute, unflinching; but
firmness must not degenerate into a domineering spirit. God desires to have
all who serve Him firm as a rock where principle is concerned, but meek and
lowly of heart, as was Christ. Then, abiding in Christ, they can do the work
He would do were He in their place. A rude, condemnatory spirit is not
essential to heroism in the reforms for this time. All selfish methods in the
service of God are an abomination in His sight."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 151.
"Of all people in the world, reformers should be the most unselfish, the
most kind, the most courteous. In their lives should be seen the true
goodness of unselfish deeds."- The Ministry oj Healing, p. 157.

9. What is often needed even among reformers? Acts 3:19.

"The reformers need to be themselves reformed, not only in their

methods of labor, but in their own hearts."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 154.
"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches. The converting
power of God must come into the church. Seek the Lord most earnestly, put
away your sins, and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from

- 35-
on high. Let God set you apart to the work. Purify your souls by obeying the
truth. Faith without works is dead. Put not off the day of preparation.
Slumber not in a state of unpreparedness, having no oil in your vessels with
your lamps. Let none leave their safety for eternity to hang upon a peradven-
ture. Let not the question remain in perilous uncertainty. Ask yourselves
earnestly, Am I among the saved, or the unsaved? Shall I stand, or shall I not
stand? He only that hath clean hands and a pure heart shall stand in that
day."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 443. [Author's italics.]

"-....... 10. What must we do individually and collectively to carryon to a suc-

cessful completion the message of reformation started by Elijah?
Revelation 3:18, 19.

"A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of
all our needs. To seek this should be our first work." -Selected Messages, book 1,
p. 121.
"The old standard bearers knew what it was to wrestle with God in
prayer, and to enjoy the outpouring of His Spirit. But these are passing off
from the stage of action; and who are coming up to fill their places? How is it
with the rising generation? Are they converted to God? Are we awake to the
work that is going on in the heavenly sanctuary, or are we waiting for some
compelling power to come upon the church before we shall arouse?" -Ibid.,
p. 122.

2. What lesson should we learn from the example of Abraham? Why

have some parents not been successful in reforming their families?
Genesis 18:19.

"Not until parents themselves walk in the law of the Lord with perfect
hearts will they be prepared to command their children after them. A refor-
mation in this respect is needed-a reformation which shall be deep and
broad. Parents need to reform; ministers need to reform; they need God in
their households. If they would see a different state of things, they must
bring His word into their families and must make it their counselor. They
must teach their children that it is the voice of God addressed to them, and is

PARENTS, AWAKE I May 23

3. Why are many parents unaware of the perils to which their families
are exposed? Mark 4:19.

"It is a sad thing when parents grow cold in their spiritual life, and,
because of waning piety and want of devotion to God, they do not realize the
high responsibility that devolves upon them to patiently and thoroughly train
their children to keep the way of the Lord."-Child Guidance, pp. 471, 472.
"Mothers may have acquired knowledge of many things, but they have
not acquired the essential knowledge unless they have a knowledge of Christ
as a personal Saviour. If Christ is in the home, if mothers have made Him
their counselor, they will educate their children from their very babyhood in
the principles of true religion." -Ibid., p. 472.

4. What must parents do to remove their families from worldly in-

fluences, time-wasting places and practices, and busy lifestyles?
What call, given to Lot, is also extended to us? Genesis 19:17.

"To parents who are living in the cities, the Lord is sending the warning
cry, Gather your children into your own houses; gather them away from
those who are disregarding the commandments of God, who are teaching
and practicing evil. Get out of the cities as fast as possible.
"Parents can secure small homes in the country, with land for cultiva-
tion where they can have orchards and where they can raise vegetables and
small fruits to take the place of flesh meat, which is so corrupting to the
lifeblood coursing through the veins. On such places the children will not be
surrounded with the corrupting influences of city life. God will help His peo-
ple to find such homes outside of the cities."-Medical Ministry, p. 310.

first priority? Ephesians 5:15-17. How should families spend their
evenings?

"Coming events are casting their shadows upon our pathway. Fathers,
mothers, I appeal to you to make most earnest efforts now for your children.
Give them daily religious instruction. Teach them to love God and to be true
to the principles of right. With lofty, earnest faith, directed by the divine in-
fluence of the Holy Spirit, work, work now. Do not put it off one day, one

"Let the evenings be spent as happily as possible. Let home be a place
where cheerfulness, courtesy, and love exist. This will make it attractive to
the children."-Counsels on Health, p. 100.

6. What steps must parents take to begin the reformation in the

home? James 4:10; 5:16.

"Parents, humble your hearts before God. Begin a thorough work with
your children. Plead with the Lord to forgive your disregard of His Word in
neglecting to train your children in the way they should go. Ask for light and
guidance, for a tender conscience, and for clear discernment that you may
see your mistakes and failures. God will hear such prayers from a humble
and contrite heart."-Child Guidance, p. 557.
"If you have failed in your duty to your families, confess your sins
before God. Gather your children about you and acknowledge your neglect.
Tell them that you desire to bring about a reformation in the home, and ask
them to help you to make the home what it ought to be. Read to them the
directions found in the Word of God. Pray with them; and ask God to spare
their lives, and to help them to prepare for a home in His kingdom. In this
way you may begin a work of reformation; and then continue to keep the
way of the Lord."-Ibid., pp. 557, 558.

instruction interesting and profitable to their children? Deuter-

"In every family there should be a fixed time for morning and evening
worship."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 43.
"It should be the special object of the heads of the family to make the
hour of worship intensely interesting. By a little thought and careful prep-
aration for this season, when we come into the presence of God, family wor-
ship can be made pleasant and will be fraught with results that eternity alone
will reveal." -Child Guidance, p. 521.

8. In addition to morning and evening worship, what else must we do in

order to make our prayers acceptable to God? 1 Corinthians 13:1-8.

"From every Christian home a holy light should shine forth. Love
should be revealed in action. It should flow out in all home intercourse,
showing itself in thoughtful kindness, in gentle, unselfish courtesy. There
are homes where this principle is carried out-homes where God is worshiped
and truest love reigns." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 144.

cern true godliness. Our young people need to be helped, uplifted, and

- 39-
encouraged, but in the right manner; not, perhaps, as they would desire it,
but in a way that will help them to have sanctified minds. They need good,
sanctifying religion more than anything else." -Child Guidance, pp. 556, 557.

10. What can we expect as we prayerfully and zealously take up the

task of reforming our families? Isaiah 49:25.

"Parents, ... use every spiritual sinew and muscle in the effort to save
your little flock. The powers of hell will unite for its destruction, but God
will lift up for you a standard against the enemy. Pray much more than you
do. Lovingly, tenderly, teach your children to come to God as their heavenly
Father. By your example teach them self-control and helpfulness. Tell them
that Christ lived not to please Himself....
"As you take hold of the work of helping your children to serve God,
the most provoking trials will come; but do not lose your hold; cling to Jesus.
He says, 'Let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with
me; and he shall make peace with me.' Isaiah 27:5. Difficulties will arise; you
will meet with obstacles; but look constantly to Jesus. When an emergency
arises, ask, Lord, what shall I do now? If you refuse to fret or scold, the Lord
will show you the way." -Child Guidance, pp. 478, 479.
"It costs something to bring children up in the way of God. It costs a

Elisha, a Prophet of Peace

"In order to accomplish this work [of soul-winning] we must follow

[Christ's] example of faithful, conscientious attention to the little

and influence." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 358.

GOD CHOOSES ELISHA May 29

1. List the main reasons why God chose Elisha to be Elijah's suc-
cessor. 1 Kings 19:19.

"Elisha's father was a wealthy farmer, a man whose household were

among the number that in a time of almost universal apostasy had not bowed
the knee to Baal. Theirs was a home where God was honored and where alle-
giance to the faith of ancient Israel was the rule of daily life. In such sur-
roundings the early years of Elisha were passed. In the quietude of country
life, under the teaching of God and nature and the discipline of useful work,
he received the training in habits of simplicity and of obedience to his
parents and to God that helped to fit him for the high position he was after-
ward to occupy."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 217, 218.

2. How did farming contribute toward the preparation of Elisha to be

a prophet and leader in Israel? Matthew 23: 12; 25:23.

"The surroundings of Elisha's home were those of wealth; but he real-

ized that in order to obtain an all-round education, he must be a constant
worker in any work that needed to be done. He had not consented to be in
any respect less informed than his father's servants. He had learned how to
serve first, that he might know how to lead, instruct, and command." -Sons
and Daughters of God, p. 93.
"By faithfulness in little things, Elisha was preparing for weightier
trusts. Day by day, through practical experience, he gained a fitness for a

- 41-
broader, higher work. He learned to serve; and in learning this, he learned
also how to instruct and lead. The lesson is for all. None can know what may
be God's purpose in His discipline; but all may be certain that faithfulness in
little things is the evidence of fitness for greater responsibilities. Every act
of life is a revelation of character."-Prophets and Kings, p. 218.

GOD CHOOSES US May 30

3. Regardless of what our occupation may be, how may we be actively

engaged in service for God? Acts 20:35; Romans 12:6-8. Compare
the responsibility of a mother with that of a minister. Proverbs
27:23.

"Wherever we may be, Christ bids us take up the duty that presents
itself. If this is in the home, take hold willingly and earnestly to make home a
pleasant place. If you are a mother, train your children for Christ. This is as
verily a work for God as is that of the minister in the pulpit. If your duty is in
the kitchen, seek to be a perfect cook. Prepare food that will be healthful,
nourishing, and appetizing. And as you employ the best ingredients in pre-
paring food remember that you are to give your mind the best thoughts. If it
is your work to till the soil or to engage in any other trade or occupation,
make a success of the present duty. Put your mind on what you are doing. In
all your work represent Christ. Do as He would do in your place." -Christ's
Object Lessons, pp. 359, 360.

4. What character qualities are important in rendering service to God

and to our fellowmen? Ecclesiastes 9:10.

"Many long for special talent with which to do a wonderful work, while
the duties lying close at hand, the performance of which would make the life
fragrant, are lost sight of. Let such ones take up the duties lying directly in
their pathway. Success depends not so much on talent as on energy and
willingness. It is not the possession of splendid talents that enables us to
render acceptable service, but the conscientious performance of daily duties,
the contented spirit, the unaffected, sincere interest in the welfare of others.
In the humblest lot true excellence may be found. The commonest tasks,
wrought with loving faithfulness, are beautiful in God's sight." -Prophets and
Kings, p. 219.

THE LITTLE THINGS May 31
5. What part does the performance of small daily tasks play in the
work of sanctification? Romans 12: 11; Luke 16: 10.

"Remember that in heaven there is no disorder, and that your home

should be a heaven here below. Remember that in doing faithfully from day
to day the little things to be done in the home, you are a laborer together
with God, perfecting a Christian character." -Child Guidance, p. 110.

- 42-
"This is true sanctification; for sanctification consists in the cheerful
performance of daily duties in perfect obedience to the will of God."-Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 360.

6. How did Christ deal with the little things in His life? Matthew
9:20-22; Mark 5:41-43; John 20:6,7.

"Christ in His life on earth taught the lesson of careful attention to the
little things. The great work of redemption weighed continually upon His
soul. As He was teaching and healing, all the energies of mind and body
were taxed to the utmost; yet He noticed the most simple things in life and in
nature. His most instructive lessons were those in which by the simple
things of nature He illustrated the great truths of the kingdom of God. He
did not overlook the necessities of the humblest of His servants. His ear
heard every cry of need. He was awake to the touch of the afflicted woman
in the crowd; the very slightest touch of faith brought a response. When He
raised from the dead the daughter of Jairus, He reminded her parents that
she must have something to eat. When by His own mighty power He rose
from the tomb, He did not disdain to fold and put carefully in the proper
place the graveclothes in which He had been laid away."-Christ's Object
Lessons, pp. 357, 358.

A QUICK RESPONSE June 1

7. What test does a call to God's work involve? 1 Kings 19:20; Luke
9:61,62.

"Elisha must count the cost-decide for himself to accept or reject the
call. If his desires clung to his home and its advantages, he was at liberty to
remain there. But Elisha understood the meaning of the call. He knew it was
from God, and he did not hesitate to obey. Not for any worldly advantage
would he forgo the opportunity of becoming God's messenger or sacrifice
the privilege of association with His servant."-Prophets and Kings, p. 220.

8. What can we learn from Elisha's prompt response to God's call as

he left behind the comforts and pleasures of home? 1 Kings 19:21.

"Elisha accepted the call to service, casting no backward glance at the

pleasures and comforts he was leaving....
"The call to place all on the altar of service comes to each one. We are
not all asked to serve as Elisha served, nor are we all bidden to sell every-
thing we have; but God asks us to give His service the first place in our lives,
to allow no day to pass without doing something to advance His work in the
earth. He does not expect from all the same kind of service. One may be
called to ministry in a foreign land; another may be asked to give of his
means for the support of gospel work. God accepts the offering of each."-
Prophets and Kings, p. 221.

A MAN OF PEACE June 2

9. What type of character qualities did Elisha possess? James 3:17.

"[Elisha] possessed both the capabilities of a leader among men and the
meekness of one who is ready to serve. Of a quiet and gentle spirit, he was
nevertheless energetic and steadfast. Integrity, fidelity, and the love and
fear of God were his, and in the humble round of daily toil he gained strength
of purpose and nobleness of character, constantly increasing in grace and
knowledge. While cooperating with his father in the home-life duties, he was
learning to cooperate with God."-Prophets and Kings, p. 218.

10. Compare the mission of Elijah with that of Elisha. 1 Kings 18:15,
18,21,40.

"The work of Elisha as a prophet was in some respects very different

from that of Elijah. To Elijah had been committed messages of condemna-
tion and judgment; his was the voice of fearless reproof; calling king and
people .to turn from their evil ways. Elisha's was a more peaceful mission;
his it was to build up and strengthen the work that Elijah had begun; to teach
the people the way of the Lord. Inspiration pictures him as coming into per-
sonal touch with the people, surrounded by the sons of the prophets, bring-
ing by his miracles and his ministry healing and rejoicing." -Prophets and
Kings, p. 235.

A TYPE OF CHRIST June 5

1. While Elijah's mission was one of reproof and rebuke, how did
Elisha administer the balm of Gilead to sin-sick souls? What was
the first miracle wrought by God through him? 2 Kings 2:19-22.

"Elijah, the man of power, had been God's instrument for the over-
throw of gigantic evils. Idolatry, which, supported by Ahab and the heathen
Jezebel, had seduced the nation, had been cast down. Baal's prophets had
been slain. The whole people of Israel had been deeply stirred, and many
were returning to the worship of God. As successor to Elijah was needed one
who by careful, patient instruction could guide Israel in safe paths. For this
work Elisha's early training under God's direction had prepared him."-

2. How was Elisha a type of Christ? Describe a few more miracles con-
nected with the ministry of Elisha. 2 Kings 4:27-36, 38-44; 5:9-11.

Christ declared at the last supper. In this cup there is to those who drink in
faith, peace-making, soul-cleansing efficacy. It is the balm of Gilead, which
God has provided to restore health and soundness to the sin-stricken
soul."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1102.

DAILY APPLICATION OF THE BALM June 7

5. How can we be daily applying the balm of Gilead to our sinful

hearts? Hebrews 10:19, 20. What happens if we do not enter the
Most Holy place by faith?

"This is the great day of atonement, and our Advocate is standing

before the Father, pleading as our intercessor. In place of wrapping about us
the garments of self-righteousness, we should be found daily humbling our-
selves before God, confessing our own individual sins, seeking the pardon of
our transgressions, and cooperating with Christ in the work of preparing our
souls to reflect the divine image. Unless we enter the sanctuary above, and
unite with Christ in working out our own salvation with fear and trembling,
we shall be weighed in the balances of the sanctuary, and shall be pronounced
wanting."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, pp. 933, 934.

6. What happens as we acknowledge before God our appreciation of

the atonement? Hebrews 10:21,22.

"As we acknowledge before God our appreciation of Christ's merits, fra-

grance is given to our intercessions. Oh, who can value this great mercy and
love. As we approach God through the virtue of Christ's merits, we are clothed
with His priestly vestments. He places us close by His side, encircling us
with His human arm, while with His divine arm He grasps the throne of the
Infinite. He puts His merits, as sweet incense, in a censer in their hands, in
order to encourage their petitions. He promises to hear and answer their
supplications."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7-A,

IMPORTANCE OF THE ATONEMENT June 8

7. Why is it important for God's church in the last days to have an intel-
ligent understanding about the atonement? Hebrews 6:19; 9:11, 12.

"Faith in the atonement and intercession ot Christ will keep us stead-

fast and immovable amid the temptations that press upon us in the church
militant."--'- The Review and Herald, June 9, 1896.
"The great plan of redemption, as revealed in the closing work for
these last days, should receive close examination. The scenes connected
with the sanctuary above should make such an impression upon the minds
and hearts of all that they may be able to impress others. All need to become
more intelligent in regard to the work of the atonement, which is going on in
the sanctuary above. When this grand truth is seen and understood, those
who hold it will work in harmony with Christ to prepare a people to stand in
the great day of God, and their efforts will be successfuL" - Testimonies, vol. 5,
p.575.

8. What must we do to have a clear understanding of the inner work of

the atonement? Hebrews 12:1,2.

"[Christ's] death on the cross of Calvary was the climax of His humilia-
tion. His work as a redeemer is beyond finite conception. Only those who
have died to self, whose lives are hid with Christ in God, can have any con-
ception of the completeness of the offering made to save the fallen race."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7-A, p. 460.
"Do not let your thoughts dwell upon yourselves. Think of Jesus. He is
in His holy place, not in a state of solitude and grandeur, but surrounded by
ten thousand times ten thousand of heavenly beings who wait to do their
Master's bidding. And He bids them go and work for the weakest saint who
puts his trust in God. High and low, rich and poor, have the same help pro-
vided."-Ibid., vol. 7, p. 933.

OFFERING THE BALM TO OTHERS June 9

9. How can we apply the Balm of Gilead on others as we continue the ref-
ormation begun by Elijah and Elisha? Jeremiah 8:22; Galatians 6:1.

"There are many from whom hope has departed. Bring back the sun-
shine to them. Many have lost their courage. Speak to them words of cheer.
Pray for them. There are those who need the bread of life. Read to them
from the word of God. Upon many is a !?oul sickness which no earthly balm
can reach nor physician heal. Pray for these souls, bring them to Jesus. Tell
them that there is a balm in Gilead and a Physician there." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 418.

- 47-
"It is of little use to try to reform others by attacking what we may
regard as wrong habits. Such effort often results in more harm than good."-
The Ministry of Healing, p. 156.
"We must offer men something better than that which they possess,
even the peace of Christ, which passeth all understanding. We must tell
them of God's holy law, the transcript of His character, and an expression of
that which He wishes them to become. Show them how infinitely superior to
the fleeting joys and pleasures of the world is the imperishable glory of
heaven. Tell them of the freedom and rest to be found in the Saviour." -Ibid.,
p.157.

10. How can we convince poor, tempted, struggling souls that Christ
can heal their mental, physical and spiritual maladies? 1 John 2:1;
Isaiah 49: 15, 16; Psalm 147:3.

"By pledging his own life, Christ has made himself responsible for
every man and woman on the earth. He stands in the presence of God, say-
ing, Father, I take upon myself the guilt of that soul. It means death to him if
he is left to bear it. If he repents, he shall be forgiven. My blood shall cleanse
him from all sin. I gave my life for the sins of the world .
. "If the transgressor of God's law will see in Christ his atoning sacrifice,
if he will believe in him who can cleanse from all unrighteousness, Christ will
not have died for him in vain."- The Review and Herald, February 27, 1900.

EDUCATION AND REFORMATION June 12

1. Why did Elijah re-establish the schools of the prophets, and what
implications does this have for us? 2 Chronicles 15:3.

"The schools of the prophets, established by Samuel, had fallen into

decay during the years of Israel's apostasy. Elijah re-established these
schools, making provision for young men to gain an education that would
lead them to magnify the law and make it honorable. Three of these schools,
one at Gilgal, one at Bethel, and one at Jericho, are mentioned in the
record." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 224, 225 ..

2. What are the fundamentals of the work of reformation and educa-

tion? 1 Corinthians 3: 10, 11; Ephesians 2:20.

"Our work is reformatory; and it is the purpose of God that through the
excellence of the work done in our educational institutions the attention of
the people shall be called to the last great effort to save the perishing."

3. What subjects were taught in the schools of the prophets, and how
was the spirit of devotion cherished? What instructions had been
given by Moses concerning the educational program to be followed
by every family? Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Psalm 78:5-7.

- 49-
"The chief subjects of study in [the schools of the prophets] were the
law of God, with the instruction given to Moses, sacred history, sacred
. music, and poetry. In the records of sacred history were traced the footsteps
of Jehovah. The great truths set forth by the types in the service of the sanc-
tuary were brought to view, and faith grasped the central object of all that
system-the Lamb of God, that was to take away the sin of the world. A
spirit of devotion was cherished. Not only were the students taught the duty
of prayer, but they were taught how to pray, how to approach their Creator,
how to exercise faith in Him, and how to understand and obey the teachings
of His Spirit. Sanctified intellect brought forth from the treasure house of
God things new and old, and the Spirit of God was manifested in prophecy
and sacred song."-Education, p. 47.

4. How did the students and teachers support themselves during the
years of study? 2 Kings 6:1,2; 4:39 (first part). What implications
does this have for our schools?

"The pupils of these schools sustained themselves by their own labor in

tilling the soil or in some mechanical employment. In Israel this was not
thought strange or degrading; indeed, it was regarded as a sin to allow
children to grow up in ignorance of useful labor.. Every youth, whether his
parents were rich or poor, was taught some trade. Even though he was to be
educated for holy office, a knowledge of practical life was regarded as essen-
tial to the greatest usefulness. Many, also, of the teachers supported them-
selves by manuallabor."-Education, p. 47.
"Those who go forth from our schools to engage in mission work will
have need of an experience in the cultivation of the soil and in other lines of
manual labor. They should receive a training that will fit them to take hold of
any line of work in the fields to which they shall be called."-Fundamentals of
Christian Education, p. 512.

REDEEMING THE TIME June 14

5. Which parable teaches that the nearness of the end should not stop
us from establishing schools for our youth? Luke 19:12, 13.

"A great work must be done all through the world, and let no one con-
clude that, because the end is near, there is no need of special effort to build
up the various institutions as the cause shall demand." - Testimonies, vol. 6,
p.440.
"Many families who, for the purpose of educating their children, move
to places where our large schools are established, would do better service for
the Master by remaining where they are. They should encourage the church
of which they are members to establish a church school where the children
within their borders could receive an all-round, practical Christian educa-
tion. It would be vastly better for their children, for themselves, and for the
cause of God if they would remain in the smaller churches, where their help

- 50-
is needed, instead of going to the larger churches, where, because they are
not needed, there is a constant temptation to fall into spiritual inactivity."-
Ibid., p. 198.

6. How is the third angel's message to be incorporated into the cur-

riculum of our schools? Revelation 1:1, 3.

"The third angel's message, the great testing truth for this time, is to
be taught in all our institutions. God designs that through them this special
warning shall be given, and bright beams of light shall shine to the world."
- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 128.
"The science of true education is the truth, which is to be so deeply im-
pressed on the soul that it cannot be obliterated by the error that everywhere
abounds. The third angel's message is truth, and light, and power, and to
present it so that right impressions will be made upon hearts should be the
work of our schools as well as of our churches, of the teacher as well as of
the minister. Those who accept positions as educators should prize more and
more the revealed will of God so plainly and strikingly presented in Daniel
and the Revelation."-Ibid., p. 131.

LEARNING FROM HISTORY June 15
7. In what sense should our schools be similar to the schools of the
prophets? Proverbs 2: 1-5.

"Just before Elijah was taken to heaven, he visited the schools of the
prophets, and instructed the students on the most important points of their
education. The lessons he had given them on former visits, he now repeated,
impressing upon the minds of the youth the importance of letting simplicity
mark every feature of their education. Only in this way could they receive the
mold of heaven, and go forth to work in the ways of the Lord. If conducted as
God designs they should be, our schools in these closing days of the message
will do a work similar to that done by the schools of the prophets." -Funda-
mentals of Christian Education, p. 512.

8. What can we learn from the relationship that existed between

Elijah, Elisha and the students? What did the apostle Peter write
about the relationship that should exist between older and younger
workers? 1 Peter 5:2-5.

"Let the older workers be educators, keeping themselves under the

discipline of God. Let the young men feel it a privilege to study under older
workers, and let them carry every burden that their youth and experience will
allow. Thus Elijah educated the youth of Israel in the schools of the prophets;
and young men today are to have a similar training. It is not possible to
advise in every particular the part that the youth should act; but they should
be faithfully instructed by the older workers, and taught to look ever to Him
who is the author and finisher of our faith." -Gospel Workers, pp. 101, 102.

9. How can lay members be involved in supporting our educational

programs? What blessing is promised to those who do this? Prov-
erbs 3:9, 10; 2 Corinthians 9:7, 8.

"God calls for home missionaries. The workers for God, in the field or at
home, are to be self-denying, bearing the cross, restricting their personal wants,
that they may be abundant in good fruits."-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 440, 441.
"Since the Lord is soon coming, it is time to put out our money to the
exchangers, time to put every dollar we can spare into the Lord's treasury,
that institutions may be established for the education of workers, who shall
be instructed as were those in the schools of the prophets. If the Lord comes
and finds you doing this work, He will say: 'Well done, thou good and faith-
ful servant: ... enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.' "-Ibid., p. 441.

10. How are education and redemption related? Luke 10:27.

"Love, the basis of creation and of redemption, is the basis of true educa-
tion. This is made plain in the law that God has given as the guide of life....
To love Him, the infinite, the omniscient One, with the whole strength, and
mind, and heart, means the highest development of every power. It means
that in the whole being-the body, the mind, as well as the soul-the image of
God is to be restored."-Education, p. 16.

ELIJAH ON THE MOVE June 19
1. Why did God move Elijah from place to place just prior to his
translation? 2 Kings 2:1, 2, 4, 6.

"God sees that a worker needs to be more closely associated with Him;
and to bring this about, He separates him from friends and acquaintances.
When He was preparing Elijah for translation, He moved him from place to
place that he might not settle down at ease, and thus fail of obtaining
spiritual power. And it was God's design that Elijah's influence should be a
power to help many souls to gain a wider, more helpful experience."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1036.

2. How should we handle changes or moves that God may be asking us

to make? Proverbs 3:6; Jeremiah 10:23.

"Let those who are not permitted to rest in quietude, who must be con-
tinually on the move, pitching their tent tonight in one place, and tomorrow
night in another place, remember that the Lord is leading them, and that this
is His way of helping them to form perfect characters. In all the changes that
we are required to make, God is to be recognized as our companion, our
guide, our dependence."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 2, p. 1036.
"Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make this your very first
work. Let your prayer be, 'Take me, 0 Lord, as wholly Thine. I lay all my
plans at Thy feet. Use me today in Thy service. Abide with me, and let all
my work be wrought in Thee.' This is a daily matter. Each morning con-
secrate yourself to God for that day. Surrender all your plans to Him, to be
carried out or given up as His providence shall indicate. Thus day by day you
may be giving your life into the hands of God, and thus your life will be mold-
ed more and more after the life of Christ." -Steps to Christ, p. 70.

ASSOCIATION WITH GODLY WORKERS June 20
3. Why was Elisha so persistent in following Elijah from city to city?
What lesson did Paul stress when he trained Timothy? 2 Timothy
2:3-5.

"In his early labor of guiding the plow, Elisha had learned not to fail or
to become discouraged, and now that he had set his hand to the plow in
another line of duty he would not be diverted from his purpose. He would
not be parted from his master, so long as opportunity remained for gaining a
further fitting up for service."-Prophets and Kings, p. 225.
"Ministry comprehends far more than preaching the word. It means
training young men as Elijah trained Elisha, taking them from their ordinary
duties, and giving them responsibilities to bear in God's work-small respon-
sibilities at first, and larger ones as they gain strength and experience....
Young, inexperienced workers should be trained by actual labor in connec-
tion with those experienced servants of God. Thus they will learn how to
bear burdens.
"Those who undertake this training of young workers are doing noble
service. The Lord Himself cooperates with their efforts. And the young men
to whom the word of consecration has been spoken, whose privilege it is to
be brought into close association with earnest, godly workers, should make
the most of their opportunity." -Ibid., pp. 222, 223.

4. What did Elisha ask of Elijah as a parting gift and why? 2 Kings 2:9,
10.

"Elisha asked not for worldly honor, or for a high place among the great
men of earth. That which he craved was a large measure of the Spirit that
God had bestowed so freely upon the one about to be honored with transla-
tion. He knew that nothing but the Spirit which had rested upon Elijah could
fit him to fill the place in Israel to which God had called him, and so he asked,
'I pray thee, let a double portion of thy Spirit be upon me.' "-Prophets and
Kings, pp. 226, 227.

FAREWELL June 21

5. How did God choose to glorify Elijah, His lonely, faithful prophet?
2 Kings 2: 11. What is the significance of the chariots of fire? Psalm
68:17.

"In the desert, in loneliness and discouragement, Elijah had said that he
had had enough of life and had prayed that he might die. But the Lord in His
mercy had not taken him at his word. There was yet a great work for Elijah
to do; and when his work was done, he was not to perish in discouragement
and solitude. Not for him the descent into the tomb, but the ascent with
God's angels to the presence of His glory."-Prophets and Kings, p. 228.

- 54-
6. How did Elisha respond as his beloved friend and teacher was being
taken from him? 2 Kings 2:12, 13.

"When the Lord in His providence sees fit to remove from His work
those to whom He has given wisdom, He helps and strengthens their suc-
cessors, if they will look to Him for aid and will walk in His ways. They may
be even wiser than their predecessors; for they may profit by their ex-
perience and learn wisdom from their mistakes."-Prophets and Kings, p. 228.

ELIJAH, A REPRESENTATIVE June 22

7. What was the evidence that Elisha got a double portion of Elijah's
spirit? In which way was it revealed? 2 Kings 2:14, 15.

"Elisha received a double portion of the spirit that had rested on Elijah.
In him the power of Elijah's spirit was united with the gentleness, mercy,
and tender compassion of the Spirit of Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1037.

8. Why is Elijah's translation significant to God's people in the last

days? 1 Corinthians 15:51-53; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.

"Elijah was a type of the saints who will be living on the earth at the
time of the second advent of Christ and who will be 'changed, in a moment,
in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump,' without tasting of death. 1 Cor-
inthians 15:51, 52."-Pmphets and Kings, p. 227.

CHRIST, MOSES, AND ELIJAH June 23

9. What promise did Jesus make to His disciples concerning the

kingdom of glory, and how was this promise fulfilled? Luke 9:27.

"[The Saviour] pleads that [some of His disciples] may witness a mani-
festation of His divinity that will comfort them in the hour of His supreme
agony with the knowledge that He is of a surety the Son of God and that His
shameful death is a part of the plan of redemption.
"His prayer is heard. While He is bowed in lowliness upon the stony
ground, suddenly the heavens open, the golden gates of the city of God are
thrown wide, and holy radiance descends upon the mount, enshrouding the
Saviour's form. Divinity from within flashes through humanity, and meets
the glory coming from above. Arising from His prostrate position, Christ
stands in godlike majesty. The soul agony is gone. His countenance now
shines 'as the sun,' and His garments are 'white as the light.' "- The Desire of
Ages, p. 421.

- 55-
10. How did the experience of Moses and Elijah bring encouragement
to Christ just before He had to bear the cross, and how does it bring
encouragement also to God's people today? Luke 9:28-31.

"Bearing the weakness of humanity, and burdened with its sorrow and
sin, Jesus walked alone in the midst of men. As the darkness of the coming
trial pressed upon Him, He was in loneliness of spirit, in a world that knew
Him not. Even His loved disciples, absorbed in their own doubt and sorrow
and ambitious hopes, had not comprehended the mystery of His mission. He
had dwelt amid the love and fellowship of heaven; but in the world that He
had created, He was in solitude. Now heaven had sent its messengers
[Moses and Elijah] to Jesus; not angels, but men who had endured suffering
and sorrow, and who could sympathize with the Saviour in the trial of His
earthly life. Moses and Elijah had been colaborers with Christ. They had
shared His longing for the salvation of men. Moses had pleaded for Israel.
... Elijah had known loneliness of spirit, as for three years and a half of
famine he had borne the burden of the nation's hatred and its woe. Alone he
had stood for God upon Mount Carmel. Alone he had fled to the desert in
anguish and despair. These men, chosen above every angel around the
throne, had come to commune with Jesus concerning the scenes of His suf-
fering and to comfort Him with the assurance of the sympathy of heaven."-
The Desire of Ages, pp. 422-425.
"Moses upon the mount of transfiguration was a witness to Christ's vic-
tory over sin and death. He represented those who shall come forth from the
grave at the resurrection of the just. Elijah, who had been translated to
heaven without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon the
earth at Christ's second coming."-Ibid., pp. 421, 422.

Special Project Offering
for the Pacific Northwest Mission in the U. S. A.

Responding to the increased interest in the message of reformation

among believers living in the picturesque region of the northwest United
States of America, in 1986 the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement
organized the work in the states of Washington, Oregon, Montana, and
Idaho into what we call the Pacific Northwest Mission. A property suitable
for the missionary center was later secured, 35 miles southeast of Seattle, 25
miles east of Tacoma, and 55 miles northeast of Olympia, in the state of
Washington. The building is in a good location, accessible from three large
cities and several small towns, and includes a chapel and fellowship hall with
facilities for health and cooking classes.
The total population in this area is over 1.5 million, with many people of
various nationalities drawn from Asia, Australia, and other parts of the
world. Since preventive health care and naturopathy have a large number of
advocates here, our health reform principles are a wonderful entering
wedge. We believe that it is in God's special providence that the way has
been opened for the soul-saving public efforts at this missionary center to
shine as a light in these last days of earth's history.
The Spirit of Prophecy counsels: "We must do more than we have done
to reach the people of our cities. We are not to erect large buildings in the
cities, but over and over again the light has been given me that we should
establish in all our cities small plants which shall be centers of influence."
- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 115.
"There is need of all the instruction that our missions can give. Continue
in your work in the power of the same Spirit that led in its establishment.
. . . God says: 'I have words of encouragement for you.' The Lord has in our
large cities many precious souls who have not bowed the knee to Baal, and
He has those who have worshiped Baal ignorantly. On these the light of
truth is to shine, that they may see Christ as the way, the truth and the life."
-Ibid., vol. 9, pp. 141, 142.
The Pacific Northwest Mission center really needs your support at this
time. Although the area here is financially prosperous, our actual church
membership is still very small and our income is rather limited. The monthly
expenses for the mortgage, utilities, communication, and maintenance are
all quite high and must be paid from offerings and not from the tithe. There-
fore, your abundant generosity in donating to the Lord's work in the Pacific
Northwest Mission is greatly needed and will be much appreciated. May the
Lord richly bless both the gifts and the givers!
