FOREWORD
The lessons for this quarter are entitled THE CHRISTIAN
AND HIS RELATIONSHIPS.
Man does not live for himself. All human beings are inter-
related and interdependent. As Christians, however, we have a
much wider field of connections than those who do not profess
our faith. Besides, if we want to be conquerors at every step, we
must know the difference between right and wrong in the field
of our relationships.
The purpose of this quarterly, therefore, is to draw the atten-
tion of our people to different areas where many believers have
problems and where we all have responsibilities and aims.
As concerned followers of Christ who are preparing for His
second coming, many of us certainly have questions, such as:
How do I stand before God?
What is necessary to insure the stability of the home and hold
the family together?
How can we (as parents) communicate positive attitudes to
our children?
What is the main concern that we should have for our chil-
dren?
What aims should we endeavor to reach in the education of
our children?
What works will characterize the life of every true Christian?
What training would enable our church leaders to shut out
many difficulties?
The present lessons will help you find answers, from the Bible
and the Spirit of Prophecy, to these and many other vital questions.
It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit and the angels of God will
be present with our Sabbath school members as they study
these lessons.

13th SABBATH OFFERING

FOR ZAMBIA

The Republic of Zambia is a prosperous country in Central Africa.

It is very rich in copper. It covers an area of 287,640 square miles. Its
population is 6,5 million.
The work of reformation in Zambia received a new impetus about
thirteen years ago, when an important group of independent Seventh-
day Adventists, who called themselves the Seventh Day Gospel Church,
joined the Reform Movement.
Our message is gaining ground in that country, too. Publications
have been translated into some of the local languages in view of the
requirements set forth in Matthew 24:14. As 72 different languages
are spoken in the country, it is not easy for our brethren to cope with the
problem of translations. This applies, especially, to the Sabbath school
quarterlies.
The center of the work in Zambia is in Mufulira, close to the border
with Zaire. Some time ago the brethren applied for a plot of ground in
what is known as church row, where almost all the churches are grouped.
By the grace of God, we were allotted a plot of land in that area.
Our people struggled for some time with the preparations to start
building, but as they are poor, theirs has been an uphill battle. Even-
tually they managed to get plans drawn up for a chapel, and early in
1984, they started a new fund-raising campaign to get the project going.
They set a target for all members: Those who have better possibilities
are to set aside 10 Kwacha per month, and those who are very poor are
to lay by at least 5 Kwacha per month. At current exchange rates (Au-
gust 1984), 1 Kwacha is the equivalent of about 50 cents of an American
dollar.
They already began to lay the foundations, but had to stop build-
ing when they got through the small sum of money they had raised.
And unless they have money to continue the construction, they may
lose the plot of land.
Therefore, dear brethren and friends, plan ahead and give boun-
tifully and cheerfully for the work in Zambia. May the Lord bless you!

Lesson 1 Sabbath, July 6, 1985

THE CREATOR AND THE WORLD

"After the earth with its teeming animal and vegetable life had been called into
existence, man, the crowning work of the Creator, and the one for whom the beau-
tiful earth had been fitted up, was brought upon the stage of action."-Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 44.

KEY TEXT: "God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let
them have dominion over ... all the earth.... So God created man in
his own image, ... male and female created he them" (Genesis 1:26,
27).

Creation D Sunday
June 30
1. What was the quality of the creation? Genesis 1:31.

"The creation was now complete. 'The heavens and the earth were finished, and
all the host of them.' 'And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was
very good.' Eden bloomed on earth. Adam and Eve had free access to the tree of life.
No taint of sin or shadow of death marred the fair creation." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 47.
"As the earth came forth from the hand of its Maker, it was exceedingly beautiful.
Its surface was diversified with mountains, ... noble rivers and lovely lakes....
Graceful shrubs and delicate flowers greeted the eye at every turn."-Ibid., p. 44.

2. How does the evidence around us demonstrate that God is a good God and has
done all things well? Psalm 139:14.

"The real evidence of a living God is not merely in theory; it is in the conviction that
God has written in our hearts, illuminated and explained by His word. It is in the living
power in His created works, seen by the eye which the Holy Spirit has enlightened."-
Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 325.
"The Creator of all things, He is the original proprietor. We are His stewards. All
that we have is a trust from Him, to be used according to His direction."-Edttcation, p.
137.

Purpose of Our World D Monday

July 1

3. What does Scripture teach regarding the origin of all created things? Genesis
2:4; Colossians 1:16; Revelation 4:11.

"The Sovereign of the universe was not alone in His work of beneficence. He had
an associate-a co-worker who could appreciate His purposes, and could share His joy

-5-
in giving happiness to created beings.... The Father wrought by His Son in the crea-
tion of all heavenly beings." -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 34.

4. For what purpose did God create the world? Isaiah 45: 18. What plan did God
have for man? Genesis 1:26; Psalm 8:5, 6.

Jehovah, the True and Living God D Tuesday

July 2

5. How does the Lord, the true God, differ from other gods? Jeremiah 10:11, 12.

"On every leaf of the forest or stone of the mountains, in every shining star, in earth
and air and sky, God's name was written. The order and harmony of creation spoke to
them of infinite wisdom and power." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 51.

6. Why does God deserve all our obedience and reverence above all other things?
Isaiah 42:5, 8; 45:5.

"Jehovah, the eternal, self-existent, uncreated One, Himself the Source and Sus-
tainer of all, is alone entitled to supreme reverence and worship. Man is forbidden to
give to any other object the first place in his affections or his service. Whatever we
cherish that tends to lessen our love for God or to interfere with the service due Him,
of that do we make a god." -Patriarchs and Prophets. p. 305.

God, the Life Giver D Wednesday

July 3

7. In what ways is God "the fountain of life"? Psalm 36:9. How is life maintained?

"For all the objects of His creation the condition is the same-a life sustained by
receiving the life of God, a life exercised in harmony with the Creator's will. To trans-
gress His law, physical, mental, or moral, is to place one's self out of harmony with the
universe, to introduce discord, anarchy, ruin." -Education, pp. 99, 100.
"The beating heart, the throbbing pulse, every nerve and muscle in the living or-
ganism, is kept in order and activity by the power of an ever-present God."-TheMinistry
of Healing, p. 417.

8. How will the Creator's power be manifested in the future? Romans 8: 11; Phi·
lippians 3:20, 21; 1 Corinthians 15:51-54.

"The living saints are changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, and caught
up with the risen ones, and together they meet their Lord in the air."-Early Writings, p.
287.

Man Is Made in God's Image D Thursday

July 4

9. What family relationships were seen in our first parents? Genesis 1:27; Luke
3:38. How were Adam and Eve in harmony with the divine will?

"Man was to bear God's image, both in outward resemblance and in character.
Christ alone is 'the express image' (Hebrews 1:3) of the Father; but man was formed in

-6-
the likeness of God. His nature was in harmony with the will of God. His mind was ca-
pable of comprehending divine things. His affections were pure; his appetites and pas-
sions were under the control of reason. He was holy and happy in bearing the image of
God and in perfect obedience to His will.
"As man came forth from the hand of his Creator, he was of lofty stature and per-
fect symmetry. His countenance bore the ruddy tint of health and glowed with the light
of life and joy. Adam's height was much greater than that of men who now inhabit the
earth. Eve was somewhat less in stature; yet her form was noble, and full of beauty.
The sinless pair wore no artificial garments; they were clothed with a covering of light
and glory, such as the angels wear."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 45.

10. What freedom does God give to every soul? Romans 14:12,5 (last part).

"In matters of conscience the soul must be left untrammeled. No one is to control
another's mind, to judge for another, or to prescribe his duty. God gives to every soul
freedom to think, and to follow his own convictions. 'Every one of us shall give account
of himself to God.' No one has a right to merge his own individuality in that of another.
In all matters where principle is involved, 'let every man be fully persuaded in his own
mind.' Rom. 14:12, 5. In Christ's kingdom there is no lordly oppression, no compul-
sion of manner. The angels of heaven do not come to the earth to rule, and to exact
homage, but as messengers of mercy, to cooperate with men in uplifting humanity."-
The Desire of Ages. pp. 550, 551.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, July 13, 1985

HUSBANDS AND WIVES

"The home that is beautified by love, sympathy, and tenderness is a place that
angels love to visit, and where God is glorified. "-The Adventist Home, p. 19.
KEY TEXT: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
. . . Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church,
and give himself for it" (Ephesians 5:22, 25).
Husbands and Wives D Sunday
July 7
1. What relationship between husbands and wives will be found in the Christian
marriage? Ephesians 5:22, 25. How is this relationship to be maintained?

"The family relationship should be sanctifying in its influence. Christian homes,

established and conducted in accordance with God's plan, are a wonderful help in form-
ing Christian character."- The Adventist Home, p. 19.
"The wife is to respect her husband. The husband is to love and cherish his wife;
and as their marriage vow unites them as one, so their belief in Christ should make
them one in Him. What can be more pleasing to God than to see those who enter into
the marriage relation seek together to learn of Jesus and to become more and more
imbued with His Spirit?" -Ibid., p. 114.
2. How is the husband-and-wife relationship to be strengthened in the Lord?
Colossians 3:12-19.

"Let not the husband or the wife permit another to share the confidences that be-
long solely to themselves.
"Let each give love rather than exact it. Cultivate that which is noblest in yourselves,
and be quick to recognize the good qualities in each other. The consciousness of being
appreciated is a wonderful stimulus and satisfaction. Sympathy and respect encourage
the striving after excellence, and love itself increases as it stimulates to nobler aims.
"Neither the husband nor the wife should merge his or her individuality in that of
the other. Each has a personal relation to God. Of Him each is to ask, 'What is right?'
'What is wrong?' 'How may I best fulfill life's purpose?' Let the wealth of your affection
flow forth to Him who gave His life for you. Make Christ first and last and best in every-
thing. As your love for Him becomes deeper and stronger, your love for each other will
be purified and strengthened."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 361.
Order in the Home D Monday
July 8
3. What responsibilities are extended to husbands and wives in the Christian
home? 1 Peter 3:1-7.

"The husband should manifest great interest in his family. Especially should he
be very tender of the feelings of a feeble wife. He can shut the door against much dis-

-8-
ease. Kind, cheerful, and encouraging words will prove more effective than the most
healing medicines."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 306.
"A wife and mother cannot make home agreeable and happy unless she possesses
a love for order, preserves her dignity, and has good government; therefore all who fail
on these points should begin at once to educate themselves in this direction and culti-
vate the very things wherein is their greatest lack. Discipline will do much for those
who are lacking in these essential qualifications."-Ibid., vol. 2, pp. 298, 299.
4. What outstanding characteristics will be revealed by every true Christian
family? 1 Corinthians 14:40. How should husbands and wives cooperate with
each other in maintaining order in the home?

"Many things are needed in the family for convenience and comfort. The lack of ap-
preciating order and system in the arrangement of family matters leads to destructive-
ness and working to great disadvantage. Every member of the family should realize that
a responsibility rests upon him individually to do his part in adding to the comfort, order,
and regularity of the family. One should not work against another. All should unitedly
engage in the good work of encouraging one another; they should exercise gentleness,
forbearance, and patience, speak in low, calm tones, shunning confusion, and each doing
his utmost to lighten the burdens of the mother. Things should no longer be left at loose
ends, all excusing themselves from duty, leaving others to do that which they c'an and
should do themselves. These things may be trifles; but when all are put together, they
make great disorder and bring down the frown of God. "-Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 699, 700.
An Overview of Christian Marriage o Tuesday
July 9
5. How can marriage between Christians become an instrument of salvation to
others? Ephesians 5:23, 24, 28; Titus 2:4, 5.

"From every Christian home a holy light should shine forth. Love should be re-
vealed in action. It should flow out in all home intercourse, showing itself in thoughtful
kindness, in gentle, unselfish courtesy." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 144.
"The best test of the Christianity of a home is the type of character begotten by its
influence. Actions speak louder than the most positive profession of godliness." -Ibid.,
p.579.

6. What principles did Jesus reaffirm in each of the following passages? John
2:1-11; Mark 7:10-13; Luke 11:11-13.

"The Scriptures state that both Jesus and His disciples were called to this marriage
feast [at Cana]. Christ has given Christians no sanction to say when invited to a marriage,
We ought not to be present on so joyous an occasion.... He never discouraged the
innocent festivities of mankind when carried on in accordance with the laws of Heaven."
- The Adventist Home, p. 100.

The Marriage Relationship Indissoluble o Wednesday

July 10
7. What did Jesus teach about the indissolubility of the marriage vow? Luke
16:18; Mark 10:9-12. Why is marriage for life? Matthew 19:6.

"God celebrated the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the
Creator of the universe. 'Marriage is honorable' (Hebrews 13:4); it was one of the first
gifts of God to man, and it is one of the two institutions that, after the Fall, Adam brought
with him beyond the gates of Paradise. When the divine principles are recognized and

-9-
obeyed in this relation, marriage is a blessing; it guards the purity and happiness of the
race, it provides for man's social needs, it elevates the physical, the intellectual, and
the moral nature." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 46.
"This [marriage] vow links the destinies of the two individuals with bonds which
nought but the hand of death should sever."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 507.
8. Why is the marriage institution important for individuals in the light of God's
word? 1 Corinthians 7:2, 3. What is the duration of the marriage covenant? 1
Corinthians 7:39.

"Every marriage engagement should be carefully considered, for marriage is a

step taken for life. Both the man and the woman should carefully consider whether
they can cleave to each other through the vicissitudes of life as long as they both shall
live." - The Adventist Home, p. 340.
The Role ofHusband and Wife D Thursday
July 11
9. In what sense is the husband the head of the household? 1 Corinthians 11:3;
1 Peter 3:7. What is the true definition of husband? What is the role of the
husband?

"The Lord has constituted the husband the head of the wife to be her protector;
he is the house-band of the family, binding the members together, even as Christ is the
head of the church and the Saviour of the mystical body. Let every husband who claims
to love God carefully study the requirements of God in his position. Christ's authority
is exercised in wisdom, in all kindness and gentleness; so let the husband exercise his
power and imitate the great Head of the church."- The Adventist Home, p. 215.
10. Why did God select a "help meet" for the husband? Genesis 2:18; Proverbs
18:22; 19:14. What is the role of the wife?

"There is a sacred circle around every family which should be preserved. No other
one has any right in that sacred circle. The husband and wife should be all to each other.
The wife should have no secrets to keep from her husband and let others know, and
the husband should have no secrets to keep from his wife to relate to others. The heart
of his wife should be the grave for the faults of the husband, and the heart of the hus-
band the grave for his wife's faults. Never should either party indulge in a joke at the
expense of the other's feelings I have been shown that there should be a sacred
shield around every family Friends and acquaintances we may have, but in the
home life they are not to meddle."-The Adventist Home, p. 177.
"The true wife and mother ... will perform her duties with dignity and cheerful-
ness, not considering it degrading to do with her own hands whatever it is necessary
to do in a well-ordered household."-Ibid., p. 244.
Recapitulation D Friday
July 12
a. How does the Bible set forth the duties of husband and wife within the mar-
riage bond?
b. What is one of the best medicines that the husband can provide for his wife?
c. What principle is calculated to insure the stability of the home and hold the
family together? .
d. What did Jesus mean when He said, "What therefore God hath joined together~
let no man put asunder"?
e. Why are the differing roles of responsibility essential for the family firm? •

Lesson 3 Sabbath, July 20, 1985

PARENTS AND CHILDREN

"Lead them [the children] to behold Christ and His loveliness; then they will turn
aside from everything that will draw their affections away from Him. This is the
principle upon which parents should work in the training of their children."-The
Adventist Home, p. 305. •

KEY TEXT: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. ... And, ye
fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the
nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:1, 4).

Our Responsibility o Sunday

July 14

1. What lesson did Jesus teach by His parable of the lost piece of silver? Luke
15:8-10.

"If there is in the family one child who is unconscious of his sinful state, parents
should not rest. Let the candle be lighted. Search the word of God, and by its light let
everything in the home be diligently examined, to see why this child is lost. Let parents
search their own hearts, examine their habits and practices. Children are the heritage
of the Lord, and we are answerable to Him for our management of His property."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 195.

2. With what aim should we work for our households? Isaiah 8: 18.

"Parents, God desires you to make your family a sample of the family in heaven.
Guard your children. Be kind and tender with them. Father, mother, and children are
to be joined together with the golden links of love. One well-ordered, well-disciplined
family is a greater power in demonstrating the efficiency of Christianity than all the
sermons in the world. When fathers and mothers realize how their children copy them,
they will watch carefully every word and gesture."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 6, p. 1118.

Our Responsibility (continued) o Monday

July 15

3. How should parents deal with their children? Ephesians 6:4. What kind of at-
titudes should parents communicate to their children? 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

"The home that is beautified by love, sympathy, and tenderness is a place that
angels love to visit, and where God is glorified."- The Adventist Home, p. 19.
"The chief requisite of language is that it be pure and kind and true-'the out-
ward expression of an inward grace.' . . . The best school for this language study is the
home." -Ibid., p. 435.

-11-
4. What form of communication is very effective in teaching love and respect in
the family? Mark 9:50; Colossians 4:6.

"The unstudied, unconscious influence of a holy life is the most convincing sermon
that can be given in favor of Christianity."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 511.
"Tell the children that you want to help them to prepare for a holy heaven, where
all is peace, where not one jarring note is heard. Be patient with them in their trials,
which may look small to you but which are large to them.
"When fathers and mothers are converted, there will be a thorough conversion of
their principles of management. Their thoughts will be converted; their tongues will
be converted." -The Adventist Home, p. 436.

Character Building o Tuesday

July 16

5. Whose example should we hold up before our children? 1 Corinthians 11:1.

"Jesus did not shirk care and responsibility, as do many who profess to be His fol-
lowers. It is because they seek to evade this discipline that so many are weak and inef-
ficient." - The Desire of Ages, p. 73.
"Jesus is our example.... And every youth who follows Christ's example of
faithfulness and obedience in His lowly home may claim those words spoken of Him
by the Father through the Holy Spirit, 'Behold My Servant, whom I uphold; Mine
Elect, in whom My soul delighteth.' Isa. 42:1."-Ibid., p. 74.

6. What is one thing that is instrumental in the work of soul saving in the fami-
ly? 2 Thessalonians 3:12.

"As Jesus worked in childhood and youth, mind and body were developed.... He
was perfect as a workman, as He was perfect in character. ... God appointed work
as a blessing, and only the diligent worker finds the true glory and joy of life. The ap-
proval of God rests with loving assurance upon children and youth who cheerfully take
their part in the duties of the household, sharing the burdens of father and mother.
Such children will go out from the home to be useful members of society."-The Desire of
Ages, p. 72.

Work Essential to Christians o Wednesday

July 17
7. How did Paul emphasize the importance of work? 1 Thessalonians 4: 11; Col-
ossians 3:23, 24. What example should we set before our children as far as
work is concerned?

"The Lord knew what was for man's happiness when He gave him work to do.
The sentence that man must toil for his bread, and the promise of future happiness and
glory, came from the same throne. Both are blessings."-Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 529, 530.
"The youth need to be taught that life means earnest work, responsibility, care-
taking. They need a training that will make them practical-men and women who can
cope with emergencies. They should be taught that the discipline of systematic, well-
regulated labor is essential, not only as a safeguard against the vicissitudes of life, but
as an aid to all-round development." -Child Guidance, p. 347.
"If the children share the labor with their mother, they will learn to regard useful
employment as essential to happiness, ennobling rather than degrading." -Ibid., p. 349.

-12 -
8. What are some of the purposes served by work? Ecclesiastes 5:12. Compare
with Proverbs 19:15; Ecclesiastes 10:18.

"God appointed labor as a blessing to man, to occupy his mind, to strengthen his
body, and to develop his faculties .... Those who regard work as a curse, attended
though it be with weariness and pain, are cherishing an error. ... Our Creator, who
understands what is for man's happiness, appointed Adam his work. The true joy of
life is found only by the working men and women." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 50.

Obedience to Parents D Thursday

July 18

9. How can parents help their children overcome disobedience? Proverbs 22:6.

"Parents have a great work to do in the matter of correcting and training their
children, and in bringing them to God and claiming His blessing upon them.... When
children realize that their parents are trying to help them, they will bend their energies
in the right direction." -Counsels to Parents. Teachers, and Students, p. 118.
"God's method of government is an example of how children are to be trained.
There is no oppression in the Lord's service, and there is to be no oppression in the
home or in the school. Yet neither parents nor teachers should allow disregard of their
word to pass unnoticed. Should they neglect to correct the children for doing wrong,
God will hold them accountable for their neglect. But let them be sparing of censure.
Let kindness be the law of the home and of the school." -Ibid., p. 155.

10. What example did JesusJeave us as a young child? Luke 2:51.

"The parents of Jesus were poor, and dependent upon their daily toil. He was famil-
iar with poverty, self-denial, and privation. This experience was a safeguard to Him.
Jesus was placed where His character would be tested. It was necessary for Him to be
constantly on guard in order to preserve His purity. He was subject to all the conflicts
which we have to meet, that He might be an example to us in childhood, youth, and
manhood."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 71, 72.

Recapitulation D Friday
July 19

a. What lesson did Jesus teach regarding our responsibility toward our family
members?
b. Why is it important for parents to convey a positive attitude in their com-
munication with their children?
c. How should we review our relationships in the home?
d. Why is a positive attitude to work essential to Christians?
e. Why is it important for parents to be faithful in discharging their responsibil-
ities in the home circle? •

Lesson 4 Sabbath, July 27,1985

EDUCATION AND THE HOME

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It lies at the foundation of a prop-
er education. Those who, having a favorable opportunity, have failed to learn this
first great lesson, are not only disqualified for service in the cause of God, but are
a positive injury to the community in which they live."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 208.

KEY TEXT: "Thou shalt teach them [the commandments] diligently unto thy chil-
dren" (Deuteronomy 6:7).

The Divine Teacher D Sunday

July 21

1. What system of education was first established on earth? Who directed the
learning experiences of Adam and Eve in Eden? Genesis 3:8. What plan does
the Lord have for the education of His people? Psalm 32:8.

"The system of education established in Eden centered in the family. Adam was
'the son of God' (Luke 3:38), and it was from their Father that the children of the Highest
received instruction. Theirs, in the truest sense, was a family school." -Education, p. 33.
"The system of education instituted at the beginning of the world was to be a model
for man throughout all aftertime. As an illustration of its principles a model school was
established in Eden, the home of our first parents. The Garden of Eden was the school-
room, nature was the lesson book, the Creator Himself was the instructor, and the
parents of the human family were the students."-Ibid., p. 20.

2. Through what instrument is the human mind brought in contact with the
thoughts of the Infinite? Isaiah 34:16.

"Man, created for fellowship with God, can only in such fellowship find his real life
and development. Created to find in God his highest joy, he can find in nothing else that
which can quiet the cravings of the heart, can satisfy the hunger and thirst of the soul.
He who with sincere and teachable spirit studies God's word, seeking to comprehend
its truths, will be brought in touch with its Author; and, except by his own choice, there
is no limit to the possibilities of his development." -Education, pp. 124, 125.

3. What responsibility does God place upon parents, teachers, and church mem-
bers concerning the education of the youth? Deuteronomy 4:9, 10. How can
parents and teachers be successful in this enterprise? Deuteronomy 6:6, 7;
Psalm 78:5-7; 1 Corinthians 10:11.

-14 -
"If ever we are to work in earnest, it is now. The enemy is pressing in on all sides,
like a flood. Only the power of God can save our children from being swept away by the
tide of evil. The responsibility resting upon parents, teachers, and church members,
to do their part in cooperation with God, is greater than words can express." -Counsels
to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 166.
"Parents and teachers do not estimate the magnitude of the work given them in
training the young. The experience of the children of Israel was written for us 'upon
whom the ends of the world are come.' 1 Corinthians 10:11. As in their day, so now the
Lord would have the children gathered out from those schools where worldly influences
prevail, and placed in our own schools, where the word of God is made the foundation
of education." -Ibid.

4. How should Christian parents bring up their children? Isaiah 38:19 (second
part); 2 John 4.

"In the training of their children they [the parents] have a joint responsibility, and
it should be their constant endeavor to act together. Let them yield themselves to God,
seeking help from Him to sustain each other. Let them teach their children to be true
to God, true to principle, and thus true to themselves and to all with whom they are con-
nected. With such training, children when sent to school will not be a cause of distur-
bance or anxiety. They will be a support to their teachers, and an example and encour-
agement to their fellow pupils." -Education, p. 283.

5. How did Abraham train his children and encampment? Genesis 18:19.

"Abraham, 'the friend of God,' set us a worthy example. His was a life of prayer.
Wherever he pitched his tent, close beside it was set up his altar, calling all within his
encampment to the morning and evening sacrifice." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 128.

6. On what condition will parents have success in their efforts to educate their
children? Deuteronomy 11:1, 18, 19.

"Not until parents themselves walk in the law of the Lord with perfect hearts will
they be prepared to command their children after them. A reformation in this respect
is needed-a reformation which shall be deep and broad. Parents need to reform; min-
isters need to reform; they need God in their households. If they would see a different
state of things, they must bring His word into their families and must make it their coun-
selor. They must teach their children that it is the voice of God addressed to them, and
is to be implicitly obeyed. They should patiently instruct their children, kindly and un-
tiringly teach them how to live in order to please God. The children of such a household
are prepared to meet the sophistries of infidelity. They have accepted the Bible as the
basis of their faith, and they have a foundation that cannot be swept away by the in-
coming tide of skepticism." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 143.

7. On what basis may we infer that Jochebed earnestly trained Moses in spiritual
matters during the early years he was with her? Cf. Hebrews 11:24-26 with
Acts 7:22. How important are the early years for child training?

-15 -
"The whole future life of Moses, the great mission which he fulfilled as the leader
of Israel, testifies to the importance of the work of the Christian mother. There is no
other work that can equal this. To a very great extent the mother holds in her own hands
the destiny of her children. She is dealing with developing minds and characters, work-
ing not alone for time, but for eternity.... The impressions now made upon their de-
veloping minds will remain with them all through life.... They are placed in our care
to be trained, not as heirs to the throne of an earthly empire, but as kings unto God, to
reign through unending ages." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 244.
"She [Jochebed] endeavored to imbue his [Moses'] mind with the fear of God and
the love of truth and justice, and earnestly prayed that he might be preserved from
every corrupting influence. She showed him the folly and sin of idolatry, and early
taught him to bow down and pray to the living God, who alone could hear him and
help him in every emergency."-Ibid., pp. 243, 244.
"Too much importance cannot be placed on the early training of children. The
lessons that the child learns during the first seven years of life have more to do with
forming his character than all that it learns in future years." -Child Guidance, p. 193.

8. What do we know about the childhood education of Jesus? Luke 2:39, 40, 47,
52. How did the mother of Jesus take special interest in the development of
her child?

"With deep earnestness the mother of Jesus watched the unfolding of His powers,
and beheld the impress of perfection upon His character. With delight she sought to
encourage that bright, receptive mind. Through the Holy Spirit she received wisdom
to cooperate with the heavenly agencies in the development of this child, who could
claim only God as His Father."- The Desire of Ages, p. 69.

9. How was Joseph educated in the fear of the Lord? What mistake did Jacob
make in the education of his children? Genesis 37:2-4.

"Joseph listened to his father's instructions and feared the Lord.... His hatred
of sin was such that he could not endure to see his brethren sinning against God. He laid
the matter before his father, hoping that his authority might reform them. This exposure
of their wrongs enraged his brethren against him. They had observed their father's
strong love for Joseph, and were envious of him. Their envy grew into hatred, and fi-
nally to murder."- The Story of Redemption, p. 100.
"Jacob unwisely manifested his preference for Joseph, and this excited the jealousy
of his other sons.... The father's injudicious gift to Joseph of a costly coat, or tunic,
such as was usually worn by persons of distinction, seemed to them another evidence
of his partiality, and excited a suspicion that he intended to pass by his elder children,
to bestow the birthright upon the son of Rachel." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 209.

10. How solicitous was Hannah for the education of her son? How can parents
learn from her example? Psalm 103:13; Isaiah 49:15; 66:13.

"From the earliest dawn of intellect she [Hannah] had taught her son to love and
reverence God and to regard himself as the Lord's. By every familiar object surround-
ing him she had sought to lead his thoughts up to the Creator. When separated from her
child, the faithful mother's solicitude did not cease. Every day he was the subject of
her prayers." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 572.

-16 -
"Happy the child in whom such words as these [Ps. 103:13; Isaiah 66:13] awaken
love and gratitude and trust; the child to whom the tenderness and justice and long-
suffering of father and mother and teacher interpret the love and justice and long-
suffering of God; the child who by trust and submission and reverence toward his
earthly protectors learns to trust and obey and reverence his God. He who imparts to
child or pupil such a gift has endowed him with a treasure more precious than the wealth
of all the ages-a treasure as enduring as eternity."-Education, p. 245.

PRINCIPLES OF TRUE EDUCATION

"True knowledge comes from God and returns to God. His children are to receive
that they may give again. Those who through the grace of God have received intel-
lectual and spiritual benefits, are to draw others with them as they advance to a
higher excellence."-Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 18.

The Lord Commands: "Teach" D Sunday
July 28
1. Why was God so particular about having parents teach their children? Deuter-
onomy 32:46.

"Since the Israelites were to be, in a special sense, the guardians and keepers of
God's law, the significance of its precepts and the importance of obedience were espe-
cially to be impressed upon them, and through them, upon their children and children's
children." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 468.
2. What were the parents to say to their children concerning God's statutes?
Deuteronomy 6:20-25.

"When their children should ask in time to come, 'What mean the testimonies, and
the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?' then
the parents were to repeat the history of God's gracious dealings with them."-Patriar-
chs and Prophets, p. 468.

God's Heritage D Monday

July 29
3. What does the psalmist mean when he says, "Children are an heritage of the
Lord"? Psalms 127:3-5. What do you know about the educational system in
ancient Israel?

"Children are the heritage of the Lord, and we are answerable to Him for our man-
agement of His property.... In love, faith, and prayer let parents work for their
households, until with joy they can come to God saying, 'Behold, I and the children
whom the Lord hath given me.' "- The Adventist Home, p. 159.
"From the earliest times the faithful in Israel had given much care to the education
of the youth. The Lord had directed that even from babyhood the children should be
taught of His goodness and His greatness, especially as revealed in His law, and shown
in the history of Israel. Song and prayer and lessons from the Scriptures were to be
adapted to the opening mind. Fathers and mothers were to instruct their children that
the law of God is an expression of His character, and that as they received the princi-
ples of the law into the heart, the image of God was traced on mind and soul. Much of

-18 -
the teaching was oral; but the youth also learned to read the Hebrew writings; and the
parchment rolls ofthe Old Testament Scriptures were open to their study."-TheDesire
of Ages, p. 69.

4. What type of environment should be chosen by the remnant people of God

especially for the benefit of the young people? Psalm 144:11, 12.

"Let the youth be placed in the most favorable circumstances possible; for the com-
pany they keep, the principles they adopt, the habits they form, will settle the question
of their usefulness here, and of their future, eternal interests, with a certainty that is
infallible."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 545.
"Parents should remember that association with those of lax morals and coarseness
of character will have a detrimental influence upon the youth. If they fail to choose
proper society for their children, if they allow them to associate with youth of ques-
tionable morals, they place them, or permit them to place themselves, in a school where
lessons of depravity are taught and practiced." -Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p.
120.

Educational Goals o Tuesday

July 30
5. What is true education? What is its object? Who is the source of such educa-
tion? Job 12:13; Colossians 2:3.

"True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means
more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and
with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development
of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers." -Education, p. 13.
"The true object of education is to restore the image of God in the soul." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 595.
"The source of such an education is brought to view in these words of Holy Writ,
pointing to the Infinite One: In Him 'are hid all the treasures of wisdom.' Colossians
2:3. 'He hath counsel and understanding.' Job 12:13."-Education, p. 13.
6. Why should Christians be cautious about the so-called wisdom of this world?
1 Corinthians 3:19. How does the Bible exalt the highest education? Job 22:21;
Psalm 111:10.

"Whatever line of investigation we pursue, with a sincere purpose to arrive at

truth, we are brought in touch with the unseen, mighty Intelligence that is working in
and through all. The mind of man is brought into communion with the mind of God, the
finite with the Infinite. The effect of such communion on body and mind and soul is
beyond estimate.
"In this communion is found the highest education. It is God's own method of de-
velopment. 'Acquaint now thyself with Him' (Job 22:21), is His message to mankind.
The method outlined in these words was the method followed in the education of the
father of our race. When in the glory of sinless manhood Adam stood in holy Eden, it
was thus that God instructed him."-Education, p. 14.
Discipline, Knowledge and Action o Wednesday
July 31
7. What lessons should we learn from the experience of Eli and his family? 1
Samuel 3: 12, 13. Why is discipline essential?

-19 -
"When parents sanction and thus perpetuate the wrongs in their children as did
Eli, God will surely bring them to the place where they will see that they have not only
ruined their own influence, but also the influence of the youth whom they should have
restrained." -Child Guidance, p. 275.

8. To what extent is there a close correlation between truth and action? John
13:17. What did Jesus teach about action? Matthew 21:28-31. How can par-
ents and teachers cooperate with the divine purpose for our children?

"It is the work of parents and teachers, in the education of the youth, to cooperate
with the divine purpose; and in so doing they are 'laborers together with God.' 1 Corin-
thians 3:9." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 595.
"Higher than the highest human thought can reach is God's ideal for His children.
. . . He who cooperates with the divine purpose in imparting to the youth a knowledge
of God, and molding the character into harmony with His, does a high and noble work."
-Education, pp. 18, 19.

Schools and Their Purpose o Thursday

August 1

9. How does a Christian school differ from secular schools? What admonition
applies also to worldly schools? 2 Corinthians 6:14-16.

"The great work of life is character building, and a knowledge of God is the founda-
tion of all true education. To impart this knowledge and to mold the character in har-
mony with it should be the object of the teacher's work."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 596.
"How few schools are to be found that are not governed by the maxims and cus-
toms of the world! There is a deplorable lack of proper restraint and judicious disci-
pline. The existing ignorance of God's word among a people professedly Christian is
alarming. Superficial talk, mere sentimentalism, passes for instruction in morals and
religion. The justice and mercy of God, the beauty of holiness and the sure reward of
rightdoing, the heinous character of sin and the certainty of its terrible results, are not
impressed upon the minds of the young. Evil associates are instructing the youth in
the ways of crime, dissipation, and licentiousness." -Ibid., pp. 594, 595.

10. What type of education did Daniel and his friends receive? Daniel 1:17-20.

"Daniel and his companions had been faithfully instructed in the principles of the
word of God. They had learned to sacrifice the earthly to the spiritual, to seek the
highest good.... At the end of their training, in their examination with other candi-
dates for the honors of the kingdom, there was 'found none like Daniel, Hananiah,
Mishael, and Azariah.' Daniel 1: 19."-Education, p. 55.

THE BIBLE: A UNIFYING FORCE

"The teaching of the Bible has a vital bearing upon man's prosperity in all the
relations of this life. It unfolds the principles that are the cornerstone of a na-
tion's prosperity-principles with which is bound up the well-being of society, and
which are the safeguard of the family- principles without which no man can at-
tain usefulness, happiness, and honor in this life, or can hope to secure the future,
immortallife."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 599.

God's Purpose in Creating Man o Sunday

August 4

1. What endowment, given to man, should have enabled him to control his own
environment? Genesis 1:26,27.

"When Adam came from the Creator's hand, he bore, in his physical, mental, and
spiritual nature, a likeness to his Maker. 'God created man in His own image' (Genesis
1:27), and it was His purpose that the longer man lived the more fully he should reveal
this image-the more fully reflect the glory of the Creator." -Education, p. 15.

2. What divine mandate was given to our first parents? Cf. Genesis 1:28; 2:15
with Isaiah 65:21-23. Why did man forfeit his right to control and shape the
earth? Genesis 6:5, 6; Mark 7:21-23.

"In order to understand what is comprehended in the work of education, we need

to consider both the nature of man and the purpose of God in creating him. We need
to consider also the change in man's condition through the coming in of a knowledge
of evil, and God's plan for still fulfilling His glorious purpose in the education of the
human race." -Education, pp. 14, 15.

God's Plan to Restore Man o Monday

August 5

3. What textbook have we received from God? Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 3:16; 1
Peter 1:22-25. How were Biblical truths transmitted by men under the in-
fluence of different cultures through the ages?

"Written in different ages, by men who differed widely in rank and occupation,
and in mental and spiritual endowments, the books of the Bible present a wide contrast
in style, as well as a diversity in the nature of the subjects unfolded." - The Great Contro-
versy, p. 8.

- 21-
4. What is one of the differences between the Ten Commandments and the Holy
Scriptures? Cf. Deuteronomy 4:13 with John 1:45.

"The Ten Commandments were spoken by God Himself, and were written by His
own hand. They are of divine, and not of human composition. But the Bible, with its
God-given truths expressed in the language of men, presents a union of the divine
with the human. Such a union existed in the nature of Christ, who was the Son of God
and the Son of man. Thus it is true of the Bible, as it was of Christ, that 'the Word was
made flesh, and dwelt among us.' John 1:14."-The Great Controversy, pp. 7, 8.
Barriers Broken Down o Tuesday
August 6
5. What national barriers existed in the days of Christ and the apostles? John
4:7-9; Acts 11:1-3. What wall was broken down by the Gospel? Ephesians
2:11-14; Galatians 3:28.

"The command, 'Go ye into all the world,' is not to be lost sight of. We are called
upon to lift our eyes to the 'regions beyond.' Christ tears away the wall of partition,
the dividing prejudice of nationality, and teaches a love for all the human family."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 823.

6. Why is the Christian culture superior to all other cultures? 2 Corinthians

5:16 (first part); Ephesians 2:17-19. What invitation, without national
distinction, is extended to all men? Acts 17:30; Romans 10:11-13.

"He [Christ] lifts men from the narrow circle which their selfishness prescribes;
He abolishes all territorial lines and artificial distinctions of society. He makes no dif-
ference between neighbors and strangers, friends and enemies. He teaches us to look
upon every needy soul as our brother, and the world as our field." - The Desire ofAges, p.
823.
"Caste is hateful to God. He ignores everything of this character. In His sight the
souls of all men are of equal value."-lbid., p. 403.
Religion in Face of Cultural and Ethnic Differences o Wednesday
August 7
7. What issue caused some problems at Antioch? Acts 15:1. How was the An-
tioch problem resolved in regard to circumcision? Acts 15:2,22-31.

"While the apostles united with the ministers and lay members at Antioch in an
earnest effort to win many souls to Christ, certain Jewish believers from Judea 'of the
sect of the Pharisees' succeeded in introducing a question that soon led to widespread
controversy in the church and brought consternation to the believing Gentiles. With
great assurance these Judaizing teachers asserted that in order to be saved, one must be
circumcised and must keep the entire ceremonial law."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 188, 189.
8. How did the Lord clarify to Peter and other believers the question of ethnic
differences in the church? Acts 10:15, 28, 45. What does this message
demonstrate to us?

"This message showed that God was no respecter of persons, but accepted and
acknowledged all who feared Him. Peter told of his astonishment when, in speaking the
words of truth to those assembled at the home of Cornelius, he witnessed the Holy Spirit
taking possession of his hearers, Gentiles as well as Jews." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 193.
- 22-
"The worker in foreign fields will come in contact with all classes of people and all
varieties of minds, and he will find that different methods of labor are required to meet
the needs of the people. A sense of his own inefficiency will drive him to God and to
the Bible for light and strength and knowledge." -Gospel Workers, p. 468.

Unity in Diversity o Thursday

August 8

9. When tensions exist regarding personal attitudes where there is no transgres-

sion of principles, what rule should we follow? Romans 14: 10, 13; Philippians
3:15, 16.

"There are rights which belong to every individual. We have an individuality and
an identity that is our own. No one can submerge his identity in that of any other. All
must act for themselves, according to the dictates of their own conscience."- Testimonies
to Ministers, p. 422.

10. How does the Holy Spirit work, through the Bible, to unify God's people?
John 16:13 (first part); 17:17,21. On what condition can we as Christians
have harmony in a diversity of cultures? 1 John 1:7. What illustration teaches
the existence of oneness in diversity in the church? John 15:1-11.

"There are no two leaves of a tree precisely alike; neither do all minds run in the
same direction. But while this is so, there may be unity in diversity. Christ is our root,
and all who are grafted into this root will bear the fruit which Christ bore. They will
reveal the fragrance of His character in the talent of speech, in the cultivation of hospi-
tality, of kindness, of Christian courtesy and heavenly politeness.
"Look at the flowers in a carpet, and notice the different colored threads. All are
not pink, all are not green, all are not blue. A variety of colors are woven together to
perfect the pattern. So it is in the design of God."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 6, p. 1083.
"The branches in the True Vine are the believers who are brought into oneness by
connection with the Vine.... The branches of the vine cannot blend into each other;
they are individually separate; yet every branch must be in fellowship with every other
if they are united in the same parent stock. They all draw nourishment from the same
source; they drink in the same life-giving properties. So each branch of the True Vine
is separate and distinct, yet all are bound together in the parent stock. There can be no
division. They are all linked together by His will to bear fruit wherever they can find
place and opportunity."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p 1143.

August 11

1. How does James point out that there must be a correlation between faith and
works if faith is to be meaningful? James 2:21. What place do faith and works
have in the life of the Christian? James 2:22.

"Those who are justified by faith must have a heart to keep the way of the Lord.
It is an evidence that a man is not justified by faith when his works do not correspond
to his profession." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 397.

2. What is faith without works of obedience? James 2:17. What role does obedi-
ence have in the plan of God? John 8:39; Genesis 26:5.

"But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is secure
against presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's
promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises,
but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression."- The Desire of Ages, p. 126.

3. What principles of Christ's kingdom did the Roman centurion possess? Luke
7:1-10.

"The centurion said of himself, 'I am not worthy.' Yet he did not fear to ask help
from Jesus. Not to his own goodness did he trust, but to the Saviour's mercy. His only
argument was his great need.... We have nothing to recommend us to God; the plea
that we may urge now and ever is our utterly helpless condition, which makes His re-
deeming power a necessity."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 65.

they can to make the world better for their stay in it." -Steps to Christ, p. 78.

5. What is taken into account in the judgment? Matthew 25:31-46.

"The Saviour has given His precious life in order to establish a church capable of
caring for sorrowful, tempted souls. A company of believers may be poor, uneducated,
and unknown; yet in Christ they may do a work in the home, the neighborhood, the
church, and even in 'the regions beyond,' whose results shall be as far-reaching as
eternity."- The Desire of Ages, p. 640.

6. What balance is to be maintained between the welfare work and the spiritual
work? John 6:25-27.

"The Saviour bade them [those who were gathered about Him], ... Seek not
merely for material benefit. Let it not be the chief effort to provide for the life that
now is, but seek for spiritual food, even that wisdom which will endure unto
everlasting life. This the Son of God alone can give; 'for Him hath God the Father

7. How does the love of Christ bind believers together in one family? 1 John
4:17; 3:18. How did the apostles show that they were interested also in the
physical needs of the people? Galatians 6:10; Titus 3:8; 3 John 5, 6.

"All who have been born into the heavenly family are in a special sense the brethren
of our Lord. The love of Christ binds together the members of His family, and wherever
that love is made manifest there the divine relationship is revealed."- The Desire ofAges,
p.638.

8. What did the apostles do when they realized the need of helpers to take care
of the fledgling church? Acts 6:3.

"The appointment of the seven [deacons] to take the oversight of special lines of
work, proved a great blessing to the church. These officers gave careful consideration

- 25-
to individual needs as well as to the general financial interests of the church, and by
their prudent management and their godly example they were an important aid to their
fellow officers in binding together the various interests of the church into a united

God's Servants Rewarded o Thursday

August 15

9. How are we assured about the reward that will be allotted to us? 1 Corinthians
15:58; Psalm 58:11; Matthew 5:12.

"It is not the length of time we labor but our willingness and fidelity in the work
that makes it acceptable to God. In all our service a full surrender of self is demanded.
The smallest duty done in sincerity and self-forgetfulness is more pleasing to God than
the greatest work when marred with self-seeking. He looks to see how much of the
spirit of Christ we cherish, and how much of the likeness of Christ our work reveals.
He regards more the love and faithfulness with which we work than the amount we
do." -Christ's Object Lessons. p. 402.
"However trying their labor, the true workers do not regard it as drudgery. They
are ready to spend and to be spent; but it is a cheerful work, done with a glad heart.
Joy in God is expressed through Jesus Christ.... This is the spirit of all true service
for God. Through a lack of this spirit, many who appear to be first will become last,
while those who possess it, though accounted last, will become first." -Ibid., pp. 402, 403.

10. How do the wages outweigh the service rendered? Luke 18:28-30.

"The Lord desires us to rest in Him without a question as to our measure of reward.
When Christ abides in the soul, the thought of reward is not uppermost. This is not the
motive that actuates our service. It is true that in a subordinate sense we should have
respect to the recompense of reward. God desires us to appreciate His promised bless-
ings. But He would not have us eager for rewards nor feel that for every duty we must
receive compensation." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 398.

LEADERSHIP

"Let not one man feel that his gift alone is sufficient for the work of God; that he
alone can carry through a series of meetings, and give perfection to the work. His
methods may be good, and yet varied gifts are essential; one man's mind is not to
mold and fashion the work according to his special ideas."-Evangelism, p. 104.

KEY TEXT: "And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant"
(Matthew 20:27).

Divine Leadership D Sunday

August 18

1. What guidelines did Jesus exemplify for church leadership and unselfish
ministry? Matthew 20:28; Luke 22:27.

"The exercise of force is contrary to the principles of God's government; He desires

only the service of love; and love cannot be commanded; it cannot be won by force or
authority. Only by love is love awakened. To know God is to love Him; His character
must be manifested in contrast to the character of Satan. This work only one Being in
all the universe could do. Only He who knew the height and depth of the love of God
could make it known. Upon the world's dark night the Sun of Righteousness must rise,
'with healing in His wings.' Mal. 4:2."-The Desire of Ages, p. 22.
"In His life and lessons, Christ has given a perfect exemplification of the unselfish
ministry which has its origin in God."-lbid., p. 649.

2. How will a consecrated minister act? Mark 10:42-45.

"So long as he remains consecrated, the man whom God has endowed with dis-
cernment and ability will not manifest an eagerness for high position, neither will he
seek to rule or control. Of necessity men must bear responsibilities; but instead of
striving for the supremacy, he who is a true leader will pray for an understanding heart,
to discern between good and evil." -Prophets and Kings, p. 31.

Principles ofLeadership D Monday

August 19

3. What principles were the foundation on which Paul built his ministry? 1 Corin-
thians 9:19; 10:33.

-27 -
"In the kingdoms of the world, position meant self-aggrandizement. ... Christ was
establishing a kingdom on different principles. He called men, not to authority, but to
service, the strong to bear the infirmities of the weak." - The Desire of Ages, p. 550.

4. What obligation does talent and influence involve? Mark 9:35.

"Power, position, talent, education, placed their possessor under the greater obli-
gation to serve his fellows. To even the lowliest of Christ's disciples it is said, 'All things
are for your sakes.' 2 Cor. 4:15.... The principle on which Christ acted [practicing
self-denial] is to actuate the members of the church which is His body."- The Desire of
Ages, p. 550.

Leadership Qualifications o Tuesday

August 20

5. For what offices and activities were men qualified by the Holy Spirit? 1 Corin-
thians 12:28.

"Every member was exhorted to act well his part. Each was to make a wise use of
the talents entrusted to him. Some were endowed by the Holy Spirit with special gifts
-'first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts
of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.' 1 Corinthians 12:28. But all
these classes of workers were to labor in harmony." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 92.

6. What condition is essential for the success of the work? Colossians 2:2; Ephe-
sians 4:3.

"Those who do labor together should seek to be in perfect harmony. And yet no
one should feel that he cannot labor with those who do not see just as he sees, and who
do not in their labors follow just his plans. If all manifest a humble, teachable spirit,
there need be no difficulty. God has set in the church different gifts. These are precious
in their proper places, and all may act a part in the work of preparing a people for
Christ's soon coming." -Gospel Workers, p. 481.

Spiritual Gifts in the Church o Wednesday

August 21

7. What gifts did the Holy Spirit bestow in the early church? 1 Corinthians 12:
8-10.

"The talents that Christ entrusts to His church represent especially the gifts and
blessings imparted by the Holy Spirit." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 327.

8. For what primary purpose were these gifts entrusted to God's people? 1 Corin-
thians 12:11, 12,25; Ephesians 4:11-13.

"The gifts of Him who has all power in heaven and earth are in store for the chil-
dren of God. Gifts so precious that they come to us through the costly sacrifice of the
Redeemer's blood; gifts that will satisfy the deepest craving of the heart, gifts lasting

- 28-
as eternity, will be received and enjoyed by all who will come to God as little children.
Take God's promises as your own, plead them before Him as His own words, and you
will receive fullness of joy." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 133, 134.

Church Administration D Thursday

August 22

9. What are the Bible requisites for appointing church leaders? 1 Timothy 3:2-7;
Titus 1:5-9.

"The same principles of piety and justice that were to guide the rulers among God's
people in the time of Moses and of David, were also to be followed by those given the
oversight of the newly organized church of God in the gospel dispensation. In the work
of setting things in order in all the churches, and ordaining suitable men to act as of-
ficers, the apostles held to the high standards of leadership outlined in the Old Testa-
ment Scriptures." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 95.

10. How were workers chosen in the early church? Acts 6:1-7; 13:3; 14:23; 1
Timothy 4:14.

"Paul and Barnabas had already received their commission from God Himself, and
the ceremony of the laying on of hands added no new grace or virtual qualification. It
was an acknowledged form of designation to an appointed office and a recognition of
one's authority in that office. By it the seal of the church was set upon the work of
God."- The Acts of the Apostles. pp. 161, 162.

FOLLOWERSHIP

"Jesus sees His true church on the earth, whose greatest ambition is to cooperate
with Him in the grand work of saving souls. He hears their prayers, presented in
contrition and power, and Omnipotence cannot resist their plea for the salvation
of any tried, tempted member of Christ's body."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 19.

KEY TEXT: "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may
obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

The Christian Goal D Sunday

August 25

1. For what purpose have we been chosen? Ephesians 1:4-6. How is the major
objective to be achieved in the Christian life? What should we do as Christians
to glorify God? 2 Thessalonians 1:11, 12.

2. What is the responsibility of every Christian? Ephesians 4:1,2.

"The world will be convinced not so much by what the pulpit teaches as by what
the church lives. The preacher announces the theory of the gospel, but the practical
piety of the church demonstrates its power."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 260.

The Essential Knowledge D Monday

August 26

3. To what spiritual development should every church member seek to attain?

2 Corinthians 7:1; Hebrews 12:14.

4. What experiential knowledge and spiritual development will make us fit for
the kingdom? Colossians 1:10; 2 Peter 1:5-11.

"The knowledge of God as revealed in Christ is the knowledge that all who are
saved must have. It is the knowledge that works transformation of character. This
knowledge, received, will re-create the soul in the image of God. It will impart to the
whole being a spiritual power that is divine.... As Jesus was in human nature, so God
means His followers to be. In His strength we are to live the life of purity and nobility
which the Saviour lived."-The Ministry of Healing, pp. 425, 426.

- 30-
Beholding Christ o Tuesday
August 27

5. What should be our constant aim in looking at the Lord Jesus Christ, our Ex-
ample? Hebrews 4:16; 12:2; 2 Corinthians 3:18.

"Men are changed in accordance with what they contemplate. If commonplace

thoughts and affairs take up the attention, the man will be commonplace. If he is too
negligent to obtain anything but a superficial understanding of truth, he will not receive
the rich blessings that God would be pleased to bestow upon him." -Counsels to Parents,
Teachers, and Students, p. 460.

6. What did the psalmist desire to behold all the days of his life? Psalm 27:4.
What will be the result as we consider Him who is our example? Hebrews 12:3;
Ephesians 3:17-19.

"Looking unto Jesus we obtain brighter and more distinct views of God, and by
beholding we become changed. Goodness, love for our fellow men, becomes our natural
instinct. We develop a character which is the counterpart of the divine character. Grow-
ing into His likeness, we enlarge our capacity for knowing God. More and more we
enter into fellowship with the heavenly world, and we have continually increasing
power to receive the riches of the knowledge and wisdom of eternity."-Chrisi's Object
Lessons, p. 355.

Spiritual Growth o Wednesday

August 28

7. How can the believer grow spiritually? Hosea 6:3.

"If our hearts are stayed upon Christ, He will come unto us 'as the rain, as the latter
and former rain unto the earth.' As the Sun of Righteousness, He will arise upon us
'with healing in His wings.' We shall 'grow as the lily.' We 'shall revive as the corn,
and grow as the vine.' "-Education, p. 106.

8. What fundamental change must be effected in the process of spiritual renewal?

Romans 12:2.

"The follower of Jesus should be constantly improving in manners, in habits, in

spirit, in labor. This is done by keeping the eye, not on mere outward, superficial attain-
ments, but on Jesus. A transformation takes place in mind, in spirit, in character. The
Christian is educated in the school of Christ to cherish the graces of His Spirit in all
meekness and lowliness."-Gospel Workers, p. 283.
"Man, fallen man, may be transformed by the renewing of the mind, so that he can
'prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.' How does he prove
this? By the Holy Spirit taking possession of his mind, spirit, heart, and character."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1080.

Daily Christian Life o Thursday

August 29

9. What is one of the things a believer must do to promote his spiritual growth?
Ephesians 4:21-24.

- 31-
"Wrongs cannot be righted, nor can reformations in character be made, by a few
feeble, intermittent efforts. Sanctification is the work, not of a day, or of a year, but of
a lifetime. The struggle for conquest over self, for holiness and heaven, is a lifelong
struggle. Without continual effort and constant activity there can be no advancement
in the divine life, no attainment of the victor's crown."-Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 312, 313.
"No man receives holiness as a birthright, or as a gift from any other human being.
Holiness is a gift of God through Christ. Those who receive the Saviour become sons
of God.... Accepting Christ as a personal Saviour, and following His example of self-
denial-this is the secret of holiness."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol.
6, p. 1117.

10. What admonition is given to church members of various age levels? Titus
2:2-7; 3:1-3. How does James sum up the essence of genuine religion? James
1:27.

"Men and women, children and youth, are measured in the scales of heaven in ac-
cordance with that which they reveal in their home life. A Christian in the home is a
Christian everywhere. Religion brought into the home exerts an influence that cannot
be measured."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.

CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE

"There was 'a strife among them [the apostles], which of them should be accounted
the greatest.' This contention, carried on in the presence of Christ, grieved and
wounded Him." -The Desire of Ages, p. 643.

KEY TEXT: "I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you"

Jesus Glorified God D Sunday

September 1

1. Who is to be our example in regard to interpersonal relationship among church

members? John 13:15-17; Philippians 2:8; Luke 22:42. How does Christ
mean His followers to be?

"Tender, compassionate, sympathetic, ever considerate of others, He represented

the character of God, and was constantly engaged in service for God and man.... As
Jesus was in human nature, so God means His followers to be. In His strength we are to
live the life of purity and nobility which the Saviour lived." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 21.

2. What examples in the life of Jesus Christ demonstrate that He indeed glorified
His Father in heaven? John 17:4. How did Christ's whole life and thought center
in God? Psalm 40:8; John 4:34.

"Love for God, zeal for His glory, and love for fallen humanity, brought Jesus to
earth to suffer and to die. This was the controlling power in His life. This principle He
bids us adopt." - The Desire of Ages, p. 330.
"He endured every trial to which we are subject. And He exercised in His own
behalf no power that is not freely offered to us. As man, He met temptation, and over-
came in the strength given Him from God. He says, 'I delight to do Thy will, 0 My God:
yea, Thy law is within My heart.' Ps. 40:8. As He went about doing good, and healing
all who were afflicted by Satan, He made plain to men the character of God's law and
the nature of His service. His life testifies that it is possible for us also to obey the law
of God."-Ibid., p. 24.

Obeying God's Will D Monday

September 2

3. How are we to identify ourselves with the kingdom of God and its righteous-
ness? Matthew 6:33; 1 Thessalonians 2:11, 12.

"The yoke that binds to service is the law of God. The great law of love revealed
in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, is that

- 33-
which binds the human worker to the will of God.... 'I came down from heaven, not
to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.' John 6:38.... He bids them
[who are serving the world] seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and
His promise is that all things needful to them for this life shall be added."- The Desire of
Ages, pp. 329, 330.

4. What will be the positive result when believers glorify God in their life and
work? Isaiah 26:3; Matthew 5:16; Romans 15:5-9.

"Those who take Christ at His word, and surrender their souls to His keeping, their
lives to His ordering, will find peace and quietude. Nothing of the world can make them
sad when Jesus makes them glad by His presence. In perfect acquiescence there is
perfect rest.... Our lives may seem a tangle; but as we commit ourselves to the wise
Master Worker, He will bring out the pattern of life and character that will be to His
own glory. And that character which expresses the glory-character-of Christ will
be received into the Paradise of God. A renovated race shall walk with Him in white,
for they are worthy." - The Desire of Ages, p. 331.

Two Basic Principles o Tuesday

September 3

5. What are the two basic principles of Christianity? Luke 10:25-28; Matthew
22:36-40. How are we to express love for our neighbor? Luke 10:29-37.

"In the story of the good Samaritan, Christ illustrates the nature of true religion.
He shows that it consists not in systems, creeds, or rites, but in the performance of
loving deeds, in bringing the greatest good to others, in genuine goodness.' '-The Desire
of Ages, p. 497.
"Man's destiny will be determined by his obedience to the whole law. Supreme
love to God and impartial love to man are the principles to be wrought out in the life."
-Ibid., p. 498.

6. What should be our basis for a life of service to the world? 1 John 4:11,12;
3:16-18.

"Jesus worked to relieve every case of suffering that He saw. He had little money
to give, but He often denied Himself of food in order to relieve those who appeared
more needy than He. His brothers felt that His influence went far to counteract theirs.
He possessed a tact which none of them had, or desired to have. When they spoke
harshly to poor, degraded beings, Jesus sought out these very ones, and spoke to them
words of encouragement. To those who were in need He would give a cup of cold
water, and would quietly place His own meal in their hands. As He relieved their suf-
ferings, the truths He taught were associated with His acts of mercy, and were thus
riveted in the memory."-The Desire of Ages, p. 87.

A Model/or Us o Wednesday
September 4

7. How is Jesus' ministry in the world a model for every believer to emulate?
Philippians 2:5-11; Luke 22:24-26; Matthew 23:11, 12.

"Shall His [Christ's] disciples show less regard for the souls of their fellow men
than the Majesty of heaven has shown?"- The Desire of Ages, p. 438.

- 34-
"In His life and lessons, Christ has given a perfect exemplification of the unselfish
ministry which has its origin in God. God does not live for Himself. By creating the
world, and by upholding all things, He is constantly ministering for others."-Ibid., p.
649.

8. How did the apostle Paul relate to people in order to reach them with the gos-
pel? 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. Why do many workers meet failures where they
expected to see success?

Some "cling tenaciously to preconceived notions, making these prominent, and

thereby fail to conform their teaching to the actual needs of the people. Many do not
realize the necessity of adapting themselves to circumstances, and meeting the people
where they are. They do not identify themselves with those whom they wish to help
to reach the Bible standard of Christianity. Some fail of success because they trust to
the strength of argument alone, and do not cry earnestly to God for His wisdom to
direct them and His grace to sanctify their efforts." -Gospel Workers, p. 381.

The Promised Power o Thursday

September 5

9. What did Jesus say about the work that His followers are to carryon? John
14: 12, 13 (Cf. Matthew 4:23).

"The disciples were to have the same power which Jesus had to heal 'all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.' By healing in His name the
diseases of the body, they would testify to His power for the healing of the soul."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 821.
"SO it may be now. Instead of man's speculations, let the word of God be preached.
Let Christians put away their dissensions, and give themselves to God for the saving
of the lost. Let them in faith ask for the blessing, and it will come." -Ibid., p. 827.

10. What promise exists in the Holy Scriptures that believers may possess the
same kind of power that Jesus manifested in His day? Mark 16:16-20; Mat-
thew 17:14-20; Philippians 2:13. How can this promise be attained?

"We cannot use the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is to use us. Through the Spirit God
works in His people 'to will and to do of His good pleasure.' Phil. 2:13. But many will
not submit to this. They want to manage themselves. This is why they do not receive
the heavenly gift. Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guid-
ance and grace, is the Spirit given."-The Desire of Ages, p. 672.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, September 14,1985

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE

"Holding in His hand the Roman coin, upon which were stamped the name and
image of Caesar, He [Christ] declared that since they [the Jews] were living under
the protection of the Roman power, they should render to that power the support
it claimed, so long as this did not conflict with a higher duty. But while peaceably
subject to the laws of the land, they should at all times give their first allegiance
to God."-The Desire of Ages, p. 602.

KEY TEXT: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caeser's; and unto
God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21).

A Question ofAllegiance o Sunday

September 8
1. What principle did Jesus state regarding duty to the civil government and duty
to God? Matthew 22:21. What should our attitude be toward participation in
politics? 2 Corinthians 6: 14, 15. Why should we bury political questions?

"When the Pharisees heard Christ's answer, 'they marveled, and left Him, and
went their way.' He had rebuked their hypocrisy and presumption, and in doing this
He had stated a great principle, a principle that clearly defines the limits of man's du-
ty to the civil government and his duty to God. In many minds a vexed question had
been settled. Ever after they held to the right principle. And although many went away
dissatisfied, they saw that the principle underlying the question had been clearly set
forth, and they marveled at Christ's far-seeing discernment." - The Desire of Ages, pp. 602,
603.
"Those who stand as educators, as ministers, as laborers together with God in any
line, have no battles to fight in the political world. Their citizenship is in heaven. The
Lord calls upon them to stand as a separate and peculiar people." -Gospel Workers, p. 393.
,
2. How is the believer in the threefold message to act when there is a conflict
between church and state? Acts 5:29. What does the Spirit of Prophecy say?

"We are not to inquire, What is the practice of men? or, What is the custom of the
world? Weare not to ask, How shall I act in order to have the approval of men? or, What
will the world tolerate? The question of intense interest to every soul is, What hath God
said? Weare to read His word and obey it, not swerving one jot or tittle from its re-
quirements, but acting irrespective of human traditions and jurisdiction." - The SDA Bi-
ble Commentary [E.G. White CommentsJ, vol. 6, p. 1056.

Church and State o Monday

September 9
3. How would the tampering with the First Amendment to the Constitution of the
U.S.A. (separation of church and state) set the stage for the religio-political
power of Revelation 13? Revelation 13:11-14.

-36 -
"Such action [as the enforcement of some religious observance] would be directly
contrary to the principles of this government [of the U.S.A.], to the genius of its free
institutions, to the direct and solemn avowals of the Declaration of Independence, and
to the Constitution. The founders of the nation wisely sought to guard against the
employment of secular power on the part of the church, with its inevitable result-
intolerance and persecution. The Constitution provides that 'Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,'
and that 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office of
public trust under the United States.' Only in flagrant violation of these safeguards to
the nation's liberty, can any religious observance be enforced by civil authority."-The
Great Controversy, p. 442.

4. What condition in the early church prepared the way for the development of
the papacy? 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. What influence will this religio-political
power exert upon the world before the second advent? Revelation 13:8.

"When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the
gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God;
and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the
secular power. The result was the papacy, a church that controlled the power of the
state and employed it to further her own ends, especially for the punishment of 'heresy.'
In order for the United States to form an image of the beast, the religious power must
so control the civil government that the authority of the state will also be employed by
the church to accomplish her own ends." - The Great Controversy, p. 443.
"Paul states plainly that the 'man of sin' will continue until the second advent. 2
Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry forward the work of decep·
tion.... In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the
honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman
Church."- Ibid., p. 579.

The Christian and the State D Tuesday

September 10

5. What is to be the attitude of God's people toward civil government? Romans

13:1-4. What is the Christian to do if the state demands allegiance that is
contrary to God's law? Acts 4: 19.

"I saw that it is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they
conflict with the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from Sinai."- Testi-
monies, vol. I, p. 361.

6. What would be the condition of our society if it were brought under the re-
straining power of God's law? Isaiah 48:18; 32:17.

"In conformity to the divine requirements there is a transforming power that brings
peace and good will among men. If the teachings of God's word were made the con·
trolling influence in the life of every man and woman, if mind and heart were brought
under its restraining power, the evils that now exist in national and in social life would
find no place." -Prophets and Kings, p. 192.

Our Citizenship in Heaven o Wednesday
September 11

7. Although we are citizens here on earth and subject to rulers as ordained by

God, where is our primary citizenship? Philippians 3:20. What did Jesus say
about His kingdom? John 18:36.

"The kingdom of God begins in the heart."- The Desire of Ages, p. 506.

8. How do we enter the kingdom of God while we are on earth? Mark 1:14, 15;
Luke 10:8,9; 18:15-17. How are we as Christians to live out the principles
of the kingdom? John 1:12, 13; Luke 17:21.

"Not by the decisions of courts or councils or legislative assemblies, not by the patron-
age of worldly great men, is the kingdom of Christ established, but by the implanting
of Christ's nature in humanity through the work of the Holy Spirit. ... Here is the only
power that can work the uplifting of mankind. And the human agency for the accom-
plishment of this work is the teaching and practicing of the word of God."- The Desire of
Ages, pp. 509, 510.

September 12

9. To what extent should we foster peace with our fellow men? Matthew 5:9;
Romans 12:18.

"We should act with great caution. 'If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live
peaceably with all men.' We can obey this admonition, and not sacrifice one principle
of our faith. Satan and his host are at war with commandment keepers, and will work
to bring them into trying positions. They should not by lack of discretion bring them-
selves there."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 356.

10. In what ways can Christ's followers promote peace? Romans 12:19-21; 1
Peter 3:8-11. How should our demeanor be toward our brethren? Matthew
7:12.

" 'Love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.' Cherish a supreme reverence for

justice and truth, and a hatred for all cruelty and oppression. Do unto others as you would
wish them to do to you. God forbids you to favor self, to the disadvantage of another."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7 p. 942.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, September 21,1985

THE CHURCH: A LIGHT TO THE WORLD

"That which God purposed to do for the world through Israel, the chosen nation,
He will finally accomplish through His church on earth today."-Prophets and
Kings, p. 714.

KEY TEXT: "Ye are the light of the world" (Matthew 5: 14).

Christ's Intercession o Sunday

September 15

1. As man's great High Priest, what is Christ doing for the sins of His people?
Hebrews 2:17; 7:25; 9:24.

"As our intercessor, Christ's office work is to introduce us to God as His sons and
daughters. He intercedes in behalf of those who receive Him. With His own blood He
has paid their ransom. By virtue of His merits He gives them power to become mem-
bers of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. And the Father demonstrates
His infinite love for Christ by receiving and welcoming Christ's friends as His friends.
He is satisfied with the atonement made."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 177.

2. How do we cooperate with Christ to make His ministry effective in our behalf?
Hebrews 10:15-25.

Church Unity: Key to Success o Monday

September 16

3. What did Jesus ask the Father in behalf of the disciples so that they might
have power to witness for the truth? John 17:20,21.

"As we approach the last crisis, it is of vital moment that harmony and unity exist
among the Lord's instrumentalities. The world is filled with storm and war and
variance. Yet under one head-the papal power-the people will unite to oppose God
in the person of His witnesses. This union is cemented by the great apostate.... At
such a time as this let them [the members of Christ's church] not be found at variance
with one another or with any of the Lord's workers. Amidst the general discord let
there be one place where harmony and unity exists because the Bible is made the
guide of life. Let the people of God feel that a responsibility rests upon them to build
up His instrumentalities."- Testimonies. vol. 7, p. 182.

- 39-
4. What attitude did Paul recommend in order for Christians to have harmony
within the church? Ephesians 4:1-3, 31, 32.

"God is leading a people out from the world upon the exalted platform of eternal
truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. He will discipline and fit up
His people. They will not be at variance, one believing one thing, and another having
faith and views entirely opposite, each moving independently of the body. Through the
diversity of the gifts and governments that He has placed in the church, they will all
come to the unity of the faith."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 446.

Interrelationships Among Us o Tuesday

September 17

5. How does Paul's Damascus road experience and conversion reveal God's plan
to use members of the church to save sinners? Acts 9:6, 10, 11, 15.

"The Son of God identified Himself with the office and authority of His organized
church. His blessings were to come through the agencies that He has ordained, thus
connecting man with the channel through which His blessings come."-Testimonies, vol.
3, p. 432.
"The Redeemer of the world does not sanction experience and exercise in reli-
gious matters independent of His organized and acknowledged church, where He has
a church." -Ibid., pp. 432, 433.

6. What interrelationship is enjoined on us? Ephesians 4:14-16.

"The word of God does not give license for one man to set up his judgment in op-
position to the judgment of the church, neither is he allowed to urge his opinions against
the opinions of the church. If there were no church discipline and government, the
church would go to fragments; it could not hold together as a body."-Testimonies, vol. 3,
p.428.

The Vindication of God's Work o Wednesday

September 18

7. To what extent is the church a demonstration of the wisdom and the righteous-
ness of God? Ephesians 1:5,6; Colossians 1:20.

"But the plan of redemption had a yet broader and deeper purpose than the salva-
tion of man. It was not for this alone that Christ came to the earth; it was not merely
that the inhabitants of this little world might regard the law of God as it should be re-
garded; but it was to vindicate the character of God before the universe." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 68.

8. As members of God's church, what is our duty? Acts 1:8; 1 Peter 3:15; Mat-
thew 5:14.

"The Saviour knew that no argument, however logical, would melt hard hearts or
break through the crust of worldliness and selfishness. He knew that His disciples must
receive the heavenly endowment; that the gospel would be effective only as it was pro-

- 40-
claimed by hearts made warm and lips made eloquent by a living knowledge of Him
who is the way, the truth, and the life. The work committed to the disciples would re-
quire great efficiency; for the tide of evil ran deep and strong against them. A vigilant,
determined leader was in command of the forces of darkness, and the followers of
Christ could battle for the right only through the help that God, by His Spirit, would
give them."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 31.

Calling a People for His Name o Thursday

September 19

9. What purpose is to be accomplished through the church? Ephesians 3:9-11;

Romans 1:5.

"From the beginning it has been God's plan that through His church shall be re-
flected to the world His fullness and His sufficiency. The members of the church, those
whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, are to show forth His
glory. The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through
the church will eventually be made manifest, even to 'the principalities and powers
in heavenly places,' the final and full display of the love of God." -The Acts of the Apostles,
p.9.

10. Why does each member have an obligation to be in the service of Christ? 2
Corinthians 5:18,19; John 20:21. What work does Christ want to do through
the church? Luke 19:10.

"The church is God's appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized
for service, and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world."- The Acts of the Apostles,
p.9.

Recapitulation oFriday

b. What provision is instrumental in promoting the unity of the faith?
c. What happens where church government and discipline are ignored?
d. How can we be the means for vindicating God's program and accomplishing
His work?
e. How does the Spirit of Prophecy set forth our duty as a church?

Lesson 13 Sabbath, September 28, 1985

STANDARD BEARERS: THE REMNANT

"When the Sabbath was changed by the papal power, the seal was taken from the
law. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to restore it by exalting the Sabbath of
the fourth commandment to its rightful position as the Creator's memorial and
the sign of His authory. 'To the law and to the testimony.' "-The Great Controversy,
p.452.

KEY TEXT: "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the com-
mandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12).

The Remnant o Sunday

September 22

1. What specification fits the faithful few shortly before and during the time of
the captivity? Isaiah 1:9; 2 Chronicles 30:6; Ezekiel 6:8, 9.

2. How does Paul describe the Jews of his day who had found salvation in Christ?
Romans 9:27; 11:5. Where was the remnant in apostolic times?

"Notwithstanding Israel's failure as a nation, there remained among them a goodly

remnant of such as should be saved."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 376.

The Remnant of "the Last Days" o Monday

September 23

3. What does John call those who remain faithful after the papal apostasy of the
1260 years? Revelation 12:17 (middle part).

"As the end of all things earthly should approach, there would be faithful ones able
to discern the signs of the times. While a large number of professing believers would
deny their faith by their works, there would be a remnant who would endure to the
end."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 535, 536.

4. What are some of the characteristics which distinguish the remnant in these
last days? Revelation 12:17 (second part); 14:1,4,5.

The Threefold Message and the Remnant o Tuesday

September 24

5. To what features of God's remnant people do the three angels' messages draw
attention? Revelation 14:12.

- 42-
"These truths, as prde in Revelation 14 in connection with 'the everlasting
gospel,' will distinguish the church of Christ at the time of His appearing. For as the
result of the threefold message it is announced: 'Here are they that keep the command-
ments of God, and the faith of Jesus.' And this message is the last to be given before
the coming of the Lord." - The Great Controversy, pp. 453, 454.

6. Why are we to stand as reformers before the world? Acts 3:21; Isaiah 58:13,
14.

"In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made
in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God's rem-
nant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God
is the foundation of all enduring reform and that the Sabbath of the fourth command-
ment is to stand as a memorial of creation, a constant reminder of the power of God. In
clear, distinct lines they are to present the necessity of obedience to all the precepts of
the Decalogue. Constrained by the love of Christ, they are to cooperate with Him in
building up the waste places. They are to be repairers of the breach, restorers of
paths to dwell in." -Prophets and Kings, p. 678.

The Angel ofRevelation 18 D Wednesday

September 25

7. What went wrong with those who were first called to proclaim the threefold
message? Revelation 3:14-17. What help did God promise to send, to remedy
the situation? Revelation 18:1.

"Satan has devised a state of things whereby the proclamation of the third angel's
message shall be bound about. We must beware of his plans and methods. There must
be no toning down of the truth, no muffling of the message for this time. The third
angel's message must be strengthened and confirmed. The eighteenth chapter of
Revelation reveals the importance of presenting the truth in no measured terms but
with boldness and power.... There has been too much beating about the bush in the
proclamation of the third angel's message. The message has not been given as clearly
and distinctly as it should have been." -Evangelism, p. 230.

8. What work must the angel of Revelation 18 perform in behalf of the church
before the latter rain is poured out? Revelation 3:18-20; Isaiah 58:1.

"The prophet [John the apostle] declares, 'And after these things I saw another
angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with
his glory.' Brightness, glory, and power are to be connected with the third angel's mes-
sage, and conviction will follow wherever it is preached in demonstration of the Spirit.
How will any of our brethren know when this light shall come to the people of God? As
yet, we certainly have not seen the light that answers to this description. God has light
for His people, and all who will accept it will see the sinfulness of remaining in a luke-
warm condition; they will heed the counsel of the True Witness when He says, 'Be
zealous therefore, and repent.' "- The Review and Herald, April 1, 1890.
"Satan has laid every measure possible that nothing shall come among us as a
people to reprove and rebuke us, and exhort us to put away our errors. But there is a
people who will bear the ark of God.... The truth will not be diminished or lose its
power in their hands. They will show the people their transgressions, and the house
of Jacob their sins."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 411.

God's People Sealed D Thursday
September 26

9. What condition will be reached by the people of God so they can be sealed and
stand before the throne of God? 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 2 Peter 3:13; Revela-
tion 7:13-15. What spiritual experience must be ours if we are to be ready
for the second advent? 2 Peter 1:10, 11; Galatians 2:20.

"There must be deep, faithful searching of heart. The light, frivolous spirit in-
dulged by so many professed Christians must be put away.... The work of prepara-
tion is an individual work. We are not saved in groups. The purity and devotion of one
will not offset the want of these qualities in another. ... He [God] will examine the
case of each individual with as close and searching scrutiny as if there were not
another being upon the earth. Everyone must be tested and found without spot or
wrinkle or any such thing." - The Great Controversy, p. 490.
"Resolution, self-denial and consecrated effort are required for the work of prep-
aration. The understanding and the conscience may be united; but if the will is not set
to work, we shall make a failure. Every faculty and feeling must be engaged. Ardor and
earnest prayer must take the place of listlessness and indifference. Only by earnest,
determined effort and faith in the merits of Christ can we overcome, and gain the king-
dom of heaven. Our time for work is short. Christ is soon to come the second time."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1096.

10. What will distinguish God's people from the rest of the world? Revelation
7:1-4.

"What is the seal of the living God, which is placed in the foreheads of His people?
It is a mark which angels, but not human eyes, can read; for the destroying angel must
see this mark of redemption. The intelligent mind has seen the sign of the cross of
Calvary in the Lord's adopted sons and daughters. The sin of the transgression of the
law of God is taken away. They have on the wedding garment, and are obedient and
faithful to all God's commands."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p.
968.
