FOREWORD
As you can deduct from the title, LES~ONS FROM THE
MOUNT OF BLESSINGS, this quarterly is bas~d on the first sermon
of Christ-the sermon on the mount. It is evident that one quarterly
would not provide enough space for a comprehensive discussion
about the truths brought out in this sermon. Therefore, only the first
part of Christ's sermon, namely, the BLESSINGS, will be studied in
these lessons.
In the days of Christ, the Jewish nation had a wrong conception of
the promised Redeemer and His work. The Jews were looking for a
political Messiah who would deliver them from foreign oppression by
breaking the Roman domination over Israel. Even the disciples clung
to this idea. Therefore, when it became evident that Jesus had come,
not as a conqueror planning to establish the supremacy of Israel over
the neighboring countries, but as "the Lamb of God, which taketh away
the sin of the world," the great majority of leaders and people were not
prepared to receive Him.
Jesus foresaw that this would happen as a result of their wrong in-
terpretation of some of the prophecies relating to the Messiah. So, in
the presence of many people who had gathered on an unnamed moun-
tain to listen to the new Teacher, He made it clear that the message,
"The kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 4:17), was not a pro-
mise to bring about the political, social, and economic changes that
they expected to see. To the disappointment of many scribes and
Pharisees who hoped to hear that the hated Roman dominion was
soon coming to an end, and of many poor peasants who were looking
for some assurance of days of plenty and ease ahead, Jesus, instead,
proclaimed the basic principles and conditions of the spiritual
kingdom He had come to establish.
In Christ's sermon on the mount, especially in the BLESSINGS,
the main qualifications required of the subjects of Christ's kingdom
are clearly set forth.
As we send out these lessons, it is our hope and prayer that the
Spirit of God will impress the hearts of our people everywhere with
the principles to be considered during this quarter.

THIRTEENTH SABBATH OFFERING
FOR THE PHILIPPINES
Philippines is a group of islands in South-East Asia. It is a strategic
connecting point between Asia and Europe and the U.S.A. The popula-
tion is about 50 million. The climate is tropical. The popular food is rice
and fish. Our people eat rice, vegetables, and fruit. There is an abun-
dance of tropical fruits. The people are generally poor, but there are
good opportunities to spread the truth through our books and tracts.
Since the establishment of the work of the Reform Movement in
that country, little was done to distribute our publications. At present
they have a few colporteurs, but our literature is scarce. We have only
one health book there. Together with this health book they distribute
also The Great Controversy, Health and Happiness, The Desire of Ages,
and Steps to Christ.
In 1981 the General Conference Executive Committee decided that
a new book should be prepared for the Philippines. That book has just
been printed, but the Philippine Union do not have enough money to
pay the cost. The General Conference gave them a loan until a 13th
Sabbath offering should be collected. This was done already, but it was
not enough. Therefore, another 13th Sabbath offering was allocated
for that purpose. This is the reason for our new appeal in behalf of the
Philippines.
In the Philippines the Government is promoting the use of medi-
cinal plants. Health books have easy acceptance. Now is a golden op-
portunity to distribute our literature containing the health message and
the present truth. This work will be promoted with the help of God and
with your cooperation.
In the name of the Philippine Union Conference we thank you in
advance for your generous offering. May the Lord reward abundantly
all those who made a sacrifice for such a noble purpose.

BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT

"The gospel is to be preached to the poor. Not to the spiritually proud, those who
claim to be rich and in need of nothing, is it revealed, but to those who are humble
and contrite. One fountain only has been opened for sin, a fountain for the poor in
spirit."-The Desire of Ages, p. 300.

KEY TEXT: "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"
(Matthew 5:3).

God Hates Pride D Sunday

September 29

1. What is human pride in the sight of God? Proverbs 16:5 (first part); Luke
16:15. How does God look upon pride? Proverbs 8:13.

"While you make yourselves appear like the world, and as beautiful as you can,
remember that the same body may in a few days be food for worms. And while you
adorn it to your taste, to please the eye, you are dying spiritually. God hates your vain,
wicked pride, and He looks upon you as a whited sepulcher, full of corruption and un-
cleanness within."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 134.

2. What does pride in the heart of man do to him? Obadiah 3 (first part). How
will pride be·punished?Proverbs-29:23; 16: 18;' Luke 14: 11 (first part).

Self-Exaltation and Defeat D Monday

September 30

3. What led to the downfall of the Jewish nation? Isaiah 3:16-26; 65:5; Luke
18:9-11.

"In the days of Christ the religious leaders of the people felt that they were rich in
spiritual treasure. The prayer of the Pharisee, 'God, I thank Thee, that I am not as the
rest of men' (Luke 18:11, RY.), expressed the feeling of his class and, to a great degree,
of the whole nation." - Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing, p. 6.

4. How did even Peter, in his early experience, cherish pride in his heart? Ma'rk
14:27-31. How is pride destroying many professed believers in our days?
Revelation 3:17. What fate will befall the proud and lofty? Isaiah 2:12.

"The evil that led to Peter's fall and that shut out the Pharisee from communion
with God is proving the ruin of thousands today. There is nothing so offensive to God
or so dangerous to the human soul as pride and self-sufficiency. Of all sins it is the
most hopeless, the most incurable." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 154.

-5-
"He who feels whole, who thinks that he is reasonably good, and is contented with
his condition, does not seek to become a partaker of the grace and righteousness of
Christ. Pride feels no need, and so it closes the heart against Christ and the infinite
blessings He came to give. There is no room for Jesus in the heart of such a person.
Those who are rich and honorable in their own eyes do not ask in faith, and receive the
blessing of God. They feel that they are full, therefore they go away empty."- Thoughts
From the Mount of Blessing. p. 7.

Christ's Example o Tuesday

October 1

5. What example of humility did Christ show when He came into the world?
Philippians 2:5-8.

"Jesus emptied Himself, and in all that He did, self did not appear. He subor-
dinated all things to the will of His Father. When His mission on earth was about to
close, He could say, 'I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work
which Thou gavest Me to do.' John 17:4. And He bids us, 'Learn of Me; for I am
meek and lowly in heart.' Matthew 11:29."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing. p. 14.

6. To what position did Christ attain by humbling Himself? Philippians 2:9-11.

Christ's Example in Us o Wednesday

October 2

7. How will the true followers of Christ be benefited by His example? Matthew
11:28-30.

"If you are willing to learn meekness and lowliness of heart in Christ's school, He
will surely give you rest and peace. It is a terribly hard struggle to give up your own
will and your own way. But this lesson learned, you will find rest and peace. Pride,
selfishness, and ambition must be overcome; your will must be swallowed up in the
will of Christ." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1091.

8. By what means did Christ illustrate true humility to His disciples? Matthew
18:2-4.

"It was not enough for the disciples of Jesus to be instructed as to the nature of
His kingdom. What they needed was a change of heart that would bring them into
harmony with its principles. Calling a little child to Him, Jesus set him in the midst of
them; then tenderly folding the little one in His arms He said, 'Except ye be con-
verted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
The simplicity, the self-forgetfulness, and the confiding love of a little child are the at-
tributes that Heaven values. These are the characteristics of real greatness."-The
Desire of Ages. p. 437.

Humbleness and Victory o Thursday

October 3

9. How can we ensure the favor and presence of the Lord? Isaiah 66:2; 57:15.
Who are the poor in spirit? ' .

-6-
"Those who know that they cannot possibly save themselves, or of themselves do
any righteous action, are the ones who appreciate the help that Christ can bestow.
They are the poor in spirit, whom He declares to be blessed."- Thoughts From the MOlmt of
Blessing, p. 7.

10. What other conditions go along with true Christian humility? Colossians
3:12-17. What promise belongs to the poor in spirit? 1 Peter 5:6; Luke 14:11
(second part); Matthew 5:3.

"Not only the wise, the great, the beneficent, will gain a passport to the heavenly
courts; not only the busy worker, full of zeal and restless activity. No; the poor in spirit,
who crave the presence of an abiding Christ, the humble in heart, whose highest ambi-
tion is to do God's will,-these will gain an abundant entrance. They will be among that
number who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
-The Desire of Ages, pp. 301, 302.

Recapitulation D Friday
October 4

a. What is generally the inward condition of people who endeavor to adorn their
outward appearance for show?
b. What is the most offensive and hopeless sin before God? What does it cause?
c. To what extent did Christ, as a man, humble Himself?
d. What will we find when we have learnt two of the most important lessons in
the school of Christ?
e. Who will gain an abundant entrance into the kingdom of God? •

Lesson 2 Sabbath, October 12,1985

BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN

"By every sin Jesus is wounded afresh; and as we look upon Him whom we have
pierced, we mourn for the sins that have brought anguish upon Him. Such mour-
ning will lead to the renunciation of sin."-The Desire of Ages, p. 300.

KEY TEXT: "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted" (Matthew
5:4).

God's People Not Free From Affliction D Sunday

October 6

1. What is said of those who are always mourning, even without a cause? (Note.)
What scriptural evidence shows, however, that God's people are not free from
affliction? Psalm 34: 19; Hebrews 12:6-9.

"Those professed Christians who are constantly whining and complaining, and who
seem to think happiness and a cheerful countenance a sin, have not the genuine article
of religion. Those who look upon nature's beautiful scenery as they would upon a dead
picture, who choose to look upon dead leaves rather than to gather the beautiful living
flowers, who take a mournful pleasure in all that is melancholy in the language spoken
to them by the natural world, who see no beauty in valleys clothed with living green and
grand mountain heights clothed with verdure, who close their senses to the joyful voice
which speaks to them in nature and which is sweet and musical to the listening ear-
these are not in Christ. They are not walking in the light, but are gathering to themselves
darkness and gloom, when they could just as well have brightness and the blessing of
the Sun of Righteousness arising in their hearts with healing in His beams."-Testimonks,
vol. 3, pp. 334, 335.

2. What does Peter say about the trials of our faith? 1 Peter 1:6, 7.

"Trial is part of the education given in the school of Christ, to purify God's
children from the dross of earthliness. It is because God is leading His children that
trying experiences come to them. Trials and obstacles are His chosen methods of
discipline, and His appointed conditions of success. He who reads the hearts of men
knows their weaknesses better than they themselves can know them. He sees that
some have qualifications which, if rightly directed, could be used in the advancement
of His work. In His providence He brings these souls into different positions and
varied circumstances, that they may discover the defects that are concealed from
their own knowledge. He gives them opportunity to overcome these defects and to fit
themselves for service. Often he permits the fires of affliction to burn, that they may
be purified."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 524.

Learning Through Affliction o Monday
October 7

3. What change did affliction bring in king David's life? Psalm 119:67, 71.

"Through affliction God reveals to us the plague spots in our characters, that by
His grace we may overcome our faults. Unknown chapters in regard to ourselves are
opened to us, and the test comes, whether we will accept the reproof and the counsel
of God. When brought into trial, we are not to fret and complain. We should not rebel,
or worry ourselves out of the hand of Christ. Weare to humble the soul before God."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 301.

4. How does affliction work as a means to an end? 2 Corinthians 4:17. What

warning and promise should we bear in mind? 1 Corinthians 10:12, 13.

"The trials of life are God's workmen, to remove the impurities and roughness
from our character. Their hewing, squaring, and chiseling, their burnishing and polish-
ing, is a painful process; it is hard to be pressed down to the grinding wheel. But the
stone is brought forth prepared to fill its place in the heavenly temple."- Thoughts From
the Mount of Blessing, p. 10.

God and Affliction o Tuesday

October 8

5. For what purpose are calamities permitted to come also upon nations? Isaiah
26:9 (second part). What assurance is given us that the Lord does not delight
in afflicting any? Lamentations 3:31-33; Ezekiel 33:11.

6. When the Lord permits afflictions to come upon us, what else is He willing to
do in our behalf? Job 5:17, 18; Hosea 6:1 (d. Isaiah 61:1-3).

"To every stricken one, Jesus comes with the ministry of healing. The life of bereave-
ment, pain, and suffering may be brightened by precious revealings of His presence.
"God would not have us remain pressed down by dumb sorrow, with sore and
breaking hearts. He would have us look up and behold His dear face of love. The
blessed Saviour stands by many whose eyes are so blinded by tears that they do not
discern Him. He longs to clasp our hands, to have us look to Him in simple faith, per-
mitting Him to guide us. His heart is open to our griefs, our sorrows, and our trails.
He has loved us with an everlasting love and with loving-kindness compassed us
about. We may keep the heart stayed upon Him and meditate upon His loving-
kindness all the day. He will lift the soul above the daily sorrow and perplexity, into a
realm of peace." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 12.

Genuine Sources ofMourning o Wednesday

October 9

7. What cause prompted David's mourning? Psalm 38:6,7; 51:1-4. Over what
should we mourn in the first place if our mourning is to find acceptance
before God? Joel 2:12-17; James 4:9. How can we see our sinfulness?

"The prayer of David after his fall, illustrates the nature of true sorrow for sin. His
repentance was sincere and deep. There was no effort to palliate his guilt; no desire to

-9-
escape the judgment threatened, inspired his prayer. David saw the enormity of his
transgression; he saw the defilement of his soul; he loathed his sin. It was not for pardon
only that he prayed, but for purity of heart. He longed for the joy of holiness-to be
restored to harmony and communion with God."-Steps to Christ, pp. 24, 25.
"One ray of the glory of God, one gleam of the purity of Christ, penetrating the
soul, makes every spot of defilement painfully distinct, and lays bare the deformity
and defects of the human character. It makes apparent the unhallowed desires, the in-
fidelity of the heart, the impurity of the lips. The sinner's acts of disloyalty in making
void the law of God, are exposed to his sight, and his spirit is stricken and afflicted
under the searching influence of the Spirit of God. He loathes himself as he views the
pure, spotless character of Christ." -Ibid., p. 29.

8. What other cause of mourning should we also bear in mind? Ezekiel 9:4.

"The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and the
salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful character. They will
always be on the side of faithful and plain dealing with sins which easily beset the peo-
ple of God. Especially in the closing work for the church, in the sealing time of the one
hundred and forty-four thousand who are to stand without fault before the throne of
God, will they feel most deeply the wrongs of God's professed people. This is forcibly
set forth by the prophet's illustration of the last work under the figure of the men each
having a slaughter weapon in his hand."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 266.

The Promised Comfort D Thursday

October 10

9. What promise is made to those that mourn? Matthew 5:4. Who is the source
of all true comfort? John 14:16-18; 1 Peter 5:7.

"The mourning here brought to view [Matthew 5:4] is true heart sorrow for sin.
Jesus says, 'I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.' John 12:32.
And as one is drawn to behold Jesus uplifted on the cross, he discerns the sinfulness
of humanity. He sees that it is sin which scourged and crucified the Lord of glory. He
sees that, while he has been loved with unspeakable tenderness, his life has been a
continual scene of ingratitude and rebellion. He has forsaken his best Friend and
abused heaven's most precious gift. He has crucified to himself the Son of God afresh
and pierced anew that bleeding and stricken heart. He is separated from God by a gulf
of sin that is broad and black and deep, and he mourns in brokenness of heart.
"Such mourning 'shall be comforted.' God reveals to us our guilt that we may flee
to Christ,. and through Him be set free from the bondage of sin, and rejoice in the
liberty of the sons of God. In true contrition we may come to the foot of the cross, and
there leave our burdens." - Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing, pp. 9, 10.

10. What should we do when we are comforted in tribulation? 2 Corinthians 1:3,

4; Romans 12:15; James 1:27.

"Blessed are they also who weep with Jesus in sympathy with the world's sorrow
and in sorrow for its sin. In such mourning there is intermingled no thought of self.
Jesus was the Man of Sorrows, enduring heart anguish such as no language can por-

BLESSED ARE THE MEEK

"If we possess the humility of our Master, we shall rise above the slights, the
rebuffs, the annoyances, to which we are daily exposed, and they will cease to
cast a gloom over the spirit. The highest evidence of nobility in a Christian is
self-control."-The Desire of Ages, p. 301.

KEY TEXT: "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5).

Christ and His Followers oSunday

October 13

1. What is said of the character of Christ? Matthew 21:5; 2 Corinthians 10:1.

"Meekness is a precious grace, willing to suffer silently, willing to endure trials.

Meekness is patient and labors to be happy under all circumstances. Meekness is
always thankful and makes its own songs of happiness, making melody in the heart to
God. Meekness will suffer disappointment and wrong, and will no retaliate. Meekness
is not to be silent and sulky. A morose temper is the opposite of meekness; for this only
wounds and gives pain to others, and takes no pleasure to itself."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p.
335.

2. What is one of the basic traits of the character of Christ's followers? Ephesians
4:1,2; Colossians 3:12. What is their most important argument in favor of
the truth?

"The servants of Christ are not to act out the dictates of the natural heart. They
need to have close communion with God, lest, under provocation, self rise up, and they
pour forth a torrent of words that are unbefitting, that are not as dew or the still show-
ers that refresh the withering plants, This is what Satan wants them to do; for these are
his methods. It is the dragon that is wroth; it is the spirit of Satan that is revealed in
anger and accusing. But God's servants are to be representatives of Him. He desires
them to deal only in the currency of heaven, the truth that bears His own image and
superscription. The power by which they are to overcome evil is the power of Christ.
The glory of Christ is their strength. They are to fix their eyes upon His loveliness.
Then they can present the gospel with divine tact and gentleness. And the spirit that is
kept gentle under provocation will speak more effectively in favor of the truth than will
any argument, however forcible."- The Desire of Ages, p. 353.

Meekness Does Not Stand Alone o Monday

October 14

3. Of what is meekness a fruit? Mention the other fruits. Galatians 5:22, 23.

-11-
4. With what other principles and values is meekness associated? 1 Timothy
6: 11. Of what does strength of character consist?

"Strength of character consists of two things-power of will and power of self-

control. Many youth mistake strong, uncontrolled passion for strength of character;
but the truth is that he who is mastered by his passions is a weak man. The real great-
ness and nobility of the man is measured by the power of the feelings that he subdues,
not by the power of the feelings that subdue him. The strongest man is he, who, while
sensitive to abuse, will yet restrain passion and forgive his enemies. Such men are
true heroes."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 656.

Meekness in Action o Tuesday

October 15

5. How will meekness induce us to esteem others? Philippians 2: 1-5. How does
the spirit of Satan contrast with the Spirit of Christ?

"Lucifer desired God's power, but not His character. He sought for himself the
highest place, and every being who is actuated by his spirit will do the same. Thus
alienation, discord, and strife will be inevitable. Dominion becomes the prize of the
strongest. The kingdom of Satan is a kingdom of force; every individual regards
every other as an obstacle in the way of his own advancement, or a steppingstone on
which he himself may climb to a higher place....
"Before honor is humility. To fill a high place before men, Heaven chooses the
worker who, like John the Baptist, takes a lowly place before God. The most childlike
disciple is the most efficient in labor for God. The heavenly intelligences can cooperate
with him who is seeking, not to exalt self, but to save souls.... He is anointed for his
mission; and he succeeds where many of the learned and intellectually wise would
fail. "-The Desire of Ages, pp. 435, 436.

6. What mutual relationship will characterize those who are controlled by the
spirit of meekness? Romans 12:10, 16; 1 Peter 5:5. Again, how can the
aforementioned contrast be seen?

"The independence and self-supremacy in which we glory are seen in their true
vileness as tokens of servitude to Satan. Human nature is ever struggling for expres-
sion, ready for contest; but he who learns of Christ is emptied of self, of pride, of love
of supremacy, and there is silence in the soul. Self is yielded to the disposal of the Holy
Spirit. Then we are not anxious to have the highest place. We have no ambition to
crowd and elbow ourselves into notice; but we feel that our highest place is at the feet
of our Saviour." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 15.

Meekness in Action (continued) o Wednesday

October 16

7. In what spirit should we labor for any church member who does something
wrong? Galatians 6:1. What is the most beautiful adorning that a Christian
woman can put on? 1 Peter 3:3, 4. What condition will be seen in the home
where the meekness of Christ is fostered?

"The meekness of Christ, manifested in the home, will make the inmates happy; it
provokes no quarrel, gives back no angry answer, but soothes the irritated temper and

-12 -
diffuses a gentleness that is felt by all within its charmed circle. Wherever cherished,
it makes the families of earth a part of the one great family above."- Thoughts From the
Mount of Blessing, pp. 16. 17.

8. In what spirit should we answer anyone who asks from us a reason for our
faith? 1 Peter 3:15. What deportment will characterize every one who, sitting
at the feet of Jesus, learns to be meek and lowly in heart? Matthew 5:39-44.

"Far better would it be for us to suffer under false accusation than to inflict upon
ourselves the torture of retaliation upon our enemies. The spirit of hatred and
revenge originated with Satan, and can bring only evil to him who cherishes it.
Lowliness of heart, that meekness which is the fruit of abiding in Christ, is the true
secret of blessing." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 17.

God's Promises to the Meek D Thursday

October 17

9. What promise is made to the meek? Matthew 5:5.

"Those who reveal the meek and lowly spirit of Christ are tenderly regarded by
God. They may be looked upon with scorn by the world, but they are of great value in
His sight."- The Desire of Ages, p. 301.

10. How is this promise enlarged by David and Isaiah? Psalm 37:11; 149:4; Isaiah
29: 19 (first part).

Recapitulation D Friday
October 18

a. How is meekness described?

b. By what is real greatness and nobility measured?
c. What evidence shows that a person is controlled: (a) by the spirit of Satan?
(b) by the Spirit of Christ?
d. Where is the true secret of blessing to be found?
e. Who will enjoy abundance of peace? •

Lesson 4 Sabbath, October 26, 1985

BLESSED ARE THEY WHICH HUNGER

AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS

"The sense of unworthiness will lead the heart to hunger and thirst for righteous-
ness, and this desire will not be disappointed. Those who make room in their hearts
for Jesus will realize His love. All who long to bear the likeness of the character of
God shall be satisfied."-The Desire of Ages, p. 302.

KEY TEXT: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for
they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6).
Spiritual Food and Drink D Sunday
October 20
1. What food and drink do we need for our souls? Isaiah 55: 1-3; John 6:35,57,
58; 4:14.

2. Who causes us to hunger for this food and thirst for this drink? Revelation
3:20. Give two examples: Luke 19:2, 3, 8, 9; John 3:1-3.

"If you have a sense of need in your soul, if you hunger and thirst after righteous-
ness, this is an evidence that Christ has wrought upon your heart, in order that He
may be sought unto to do for you, through the endowment of the Holy Spirit, those
things which it is impossible for you to do for yourself."- Thoughts From the Mount of Bless-
ing, p. 19.

Bread of Life and Water of Life D Monday

October 21
3. What is the bread of life and how should it be eaten? John 6:51, 63; Matthew
4:4.

"The Saviour Himself explains this matter: 'It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the
flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are
Ii/e.' The word of God must be interwoven with the living character of those who
believe it. The only vital faith is that faith which receives and assimilates the truth till
it is a part of the being and the motive power of the life and action. Jesus is called the
Word of God. He accepted His Father's law, wrought out its principles in His life,
manifested its spirit, and showed its beneficent power in the heart. Says John: 'The
Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of
the Only Begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.' The followers of Christ
must be partakers of His experience. They must assimilate the word of God. They
must be changed into its likeness by the power of Christ and reflect the divine at-
tributes. They must eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God, or there is no
life in them. The spirit and work of Christ must become the spirit and work of His
disciples." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 576.

4. What is the water of life and how should it be drunk? Revelation 22:17; 21:6;
John 7:37, 38.

"The words of God are the wellsprings of life. As you seek unto those living springs
you will, through the Holy Spirit, be brought into communion with Christ. Familiar
truths will present themselves to your mind in a new aspect, texts of Scripture will
burst upon you with a new meaning as a flash of light, you will see the relation of other
truths to the work of redemption, and you will know that Christ is leading you, a divine
Teacher is at your side." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 20.
Empty Souls Are Filled D Tuesday
October 22
5. What promise is made to those that hunger and thirst after righteousness?
Matthew 5:6. What should be understood by "receiving Christ" in contrast
with the popular concept? 1 John 3:24; John 14:23, 15-17; 1:12.

"Christ became one flesh with us, in order that we might become one spirit with
Him. It is by virtue of this union that we are to come forth from the grave,-not merely
as a manifestation of the power of Christ, but because, through faith, His life has
become ours. Those who see Christ in His true character, and receive Him into the
heart, have everlasting life. It is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the
Spirit of God, received into the heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eter-
nal."- The Desire of Ages, p. 388.
6. What transformation is wrought in those who receive Christ into their lives?
John 16:13 (first part); Ephesians 2:4-6; 2 Corinthians 5:17.

"As we discern the perfection of our Saviour's character we shall desire to become
wholly transformed and renewed in the image of His purity. The more we know of God,
the higher will be our ideal of character and the more earnest our longing to reflect His
likeness." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 19.
Progressive Experience D Wednesday
October 23
7. What is the experience of those who feed on the truth continually? Mark 4:28;
2 Corinthians 3:18. .

"As in nature, so in grace; there can be no life without growth. The plant must
either grow or die. As its growth is silent and imperceptible, but continuous, so is the
development of the Christian life. At every stage of development our life may be
perfect; yet if God's purpose for us is fulfilled, there will be continual advancement.
Sanctification is the work of a lifetime. As our opportunities multiply, our experience
will enlarge, and our knowledge increase. We shall become strong to bear respon-
sibility, and our maturity will be in proportion to our privileges." -Christ's Object Lessons,
pp. 65, 66.
"The heart that has once tasted the love of Christ, cries out continually for a deeper
draft, and as you impart you will receive in richer and more abundant measure. Every
revelation of God to the soul increases the capacity to know and to love."- Thoughts From
the Mount of Blessing, p. 20.

8. What attributes must be developed in us, through our intimate association

with Christ, before we can be admitted into the kingdom of heaven? 1 Corin-
thians 1:30; Hebrews 12:14; 2 Peter 1:4-11.

-15 -
"Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this character He
offers to impart to us. 'All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.' Isa. 64:6. Everything
that we of ourselves can do is defiled by sin. But the Son of God 'was manifested to take
away our sins; and in Him is no sin.' Sin is defined to be 'the transgression of the law.'
1 John 3:5,4. But Christ was obedient to every requirement of the law. He said of Him-
self, 'I delight to do Thy will, 0 My God; yea, Thy law is within My heart.' Ps. 40:8.
When on earth, He said to His disciples, 'I have kept My Father's commandments.'
John 15:10. By His perfect obedience He has made it possible for every human being to
obey God's commandments. When we submit ouselves to Christ, the heart is united
with His heart, the will is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the
thoughts are brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be
clothed with the garment of His righteousness. Then as the Lord looks upon us He sees,
not the fig-leaf garment, not the nakedness and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righ-
teousness, which is perfect obedience to the law of Jehovah."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp.

The Indelible Mark of God D Thursday

October 24

9. What is the significance of the name borne by the 144,000 who are saved
under the third angel's message? Revelation 14:1; Jeremiah 23:6 (d. Exodus
34:5,6).

"John saw a Lamb on Mount Zion, and with Him 144,000 having His Father's name
written in their foreheads. They bore the signet of heaven. They reflected the image
of God. They were full of the light and the glory of the Holy One. If we would have the
image and superscription of God upon us, we must separate ourselves from all iniquity.
We must forsake every evil way, and then we must trust our cases in the hands of
Christ. While we are working out our own salvation with fear and trembling, God will
work in us to will and to do of His own good pleasure." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 978.
"This scripture [Rev. 14:1-4] represents the character of the people of God for
these last days."-Ibid.

10. What "passport" will be given to the 144,000? Revelation 3:12.

"The indelible mark of God is upon them [the saints]. God can plead that His own
name is written there. The Lord has shut them in. Their destination is inscribed-
'GOD, NEW JERUSALEM.' They are God's property, His possession.... Let your
souls answer the question, Does my character correspond to the qualifications essential
that I may receive a passport to the mansions Christ has prepared for those who are
fitted for them? Holiness must be inwrought in our character." - Testimonies to Ministers, p.

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL

The Holy Spirit that abides in the soul and is manifest in the life will soften hard
hearts and awaken sympathy and tenderness. You will reap that which you sow."
-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 23.

KEY TEXT: "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy" (Matthew 5:7).

The Source ofMercy o Sunday

October 27

1. Who is the source of all mercy? Psalm 103:8.

"God is Himself the source of all mercy. His name is 'merciful and gracious.' Ex-
odus 34:6. He does not treat us according to our desert. He does not ask if we are wor-
thy of His love, but He pours upon us the riches of His love, to make us worthy. He is
not vindictive. He seeks not to punish, but to redeem. Even the severity which He
manifests through His providences is manifested for the salvation of the wayward. He
yearns with intense desire to relieve the woes of men and to apply His balsam to their
wounds. It is true that God 'will by no means clear the guilty' (Exodus 34:7), but He
would take away..t he guilt."...,. Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 22.

2. What proves that the Lord is merciful? Lamentations 3:22.

Christ's Ministry ofMercy o Monday

October 28

3. Wherein can we see mercy associated with Christ's mission on earth and with
His ministry in heaven? Luke 4:18; Hebrews 2:17.

4. What is more important, in the eyes of God, than sacrifices and penances?
Matthew 12:7.

"Come close to the great Heart of pitying love, and let the current of that divine
compassion flow into your heart and from you to the hearts of others. Let the
tenderness and mercy that Jesus has revealed in His own precious life be an example
to us of the manner in which we should treat our fellow beings, especially those who
are our brethren in Christ." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 612.

-17 -
Partakers of the Divine Nature D Tuesday
October 29

5. What is one of the attributes that will characterize the partakers of the
divine nature? Psalm 37:23-26; Luke 6:36.

"The merciful are 'partakers of the divine nature,' and in them the compassionate
love of God finds expression. All whose hearts are in sympathy with the heart of Infinite
Love will seek to reclaim and not to condemn. Christ dwelling in the soul is a spring
that never runs dry. Where He abides, there will be an overflowing of beneficence.
"To the appeal of the erring, the tempted, the wretched victims of want and sin,
the Christian does not ask, Are they worthy? but, How can I benefit them? In the most
wretched, the most debased, he sees souls whom Christ died to save and for whom God
has given to His children the ministry of reconciliation." - Thoughts From the Mount ofBless-
l.
ing, p. 22.

6. What is one of the characteristics of heavenly wisdom? James 3:17.

Mercy in Action D Wednesday

October 30

7. What is true religion? James 1:27; Psalm 72:12; Isaiah 1:17. How did Job
practice true religion? Job 29:12-16.

"The merciful are those who manifest compassion to the poor, the suffering, and
the oppressed....
"There are many to whom life is a painful struggle; they feel their deficiencies
and are miserable and unbelieving; they think they have nothing for which to be grate-
ful. Kind words, looks of sympathy, expressions of appreciation, would be to many a
struggling and lonely one as the cup of cold water to a thirsty soul. A word of sym-
pathy, an act of kindness, would lift burdens that rest heavily upon weary shoulders.
And every word or deed of unselfish kindness is an expression of the love of Christ for
lost humanity." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 22, 23.

8. How are we to use mercy toward suffering mankind? Isaiah 58:7; Matthew
25:34-40. What does the parable of the good Samaritan teach? (Luke
10:30-37.)

"In the story of the good Samaritan, Christ illustrates the nature of true religion.
He shows that it consists not in systems, creeds, or rites, but in the performance of
loving deeds, in bringing the greatest good to others, in genuine goodness." - The Desire
of Ages, p. 497.
"His [Christ's] followers are not to feel themselves detached from the perishing
world around them. They are a part of the great web of humanity; and Heaven looks
upon them as brothers to sinners as well as to saints. The fallen, the erring, and the
sinful, Christ's love embraces; and every deed of kindness done to uplift a fallen soul,
every act of mercy, is accepted as done to Him."-Ibid., p. 638.

God's Promises to the Merciful D Thursday

October 31

9. What promises are made to the merciful? Matthew 5:7; Psalm 41:1-3;
Philippians 4:19.

-18 -
"He who has given his life to God in ministry to His children is linked with Him
who has all the resources of the universe at His command. His life is bound up by the
golden chain of the immutable promises with the life of God. The Lord will not fail
him in the hour of suffering and need."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 24.

10. What promise will be very precious to us in the time of trouble? Psalm
91:1-10; Isaiah 33:16.

"And in the hour of final need the merciful shall find refuge in the mercy of the
compassionate Saviour and shall be received into everlasting habitations."-Thoughts
From the Mount of Blessing, p. 24.

tray. His spirit was torn and bruised by the transgressions of men. He toiled with self-
consuming zeal to relieve the wants and woes of humanity, and His heart was heavy
with sorrow as He saw multitudes refuse to come to Him that they might have life. All
who are followers of Christ will share in this experience. As they partake of His love
they will enter into His travail for the saving of the lost. They share in the sufferings
of Christ, and they will share also in the glory that shall be revealed. One with Him in
His work, drinking with Him the cup of sorrow, they are partakers also of His

BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART

"The carnal heart must be crucified; for its tendency is to moral corruption, and
the end thereof is death. Nothing but the life-giving influences of the gospel can
help the soul."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 267.

unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is de-
filed" (Titus 1:15). •.
The Unregenerate Heart D Sunday
November 3
r
1. Why is it unsafe to follow the dictates of the heart? Jeremiah 17:9. Give an
example of self-deception.

"The impenitent sometimes excuse themselves by saying of professed Christians,

'I am as good as they are. They are no more self-denying, sober, or circumspect in their
conduct than I am. They love pleasure and self-indulgence as well as I do.' Thus they
make the faults of others an excuse for their own neglect of duty. But the sins and de-
fects of others do not excuse anyone, for the Lord has not given us an erring human
pattern. The spotless Son of God has been given as our example, and those who com-
plain of the wrong course of professed Christians are the ones who should show better
lives and nobler examples. If they have so high a conception of what a Christian should
be, is not their own sin so much the greater? They know what is right, and yet refuse
to do it." -Steps to Christ, p. 32.
2. How does Paul show the contrast between the pure and the polluted? Titus
1:15. Describe the condition of an unconverted heart. Mark 7:20-23. Give
one more example of self-deception.

"As God has prospered you, has not the indulgence of pride and vanity been steadily
increasing? While you are devoting precious time to the study of dress, the inward
adorning is neglected; there is no growth in grace. Instead of becoming more heavenly-
minded, you are becoming more and more earthly-minded. Foolish and hurtful lusts,
groveling appetites, becloud your sense of sacred things. Why will not everyone who
professes to love Jesus flee from these soul-destroying indulgences! The world is crazy
after show and fashion and pleasure. Licentiousness is steadily and fearfully on the in-
crease. Why will not Christians be true to their high profession!"- Testimonies, vol. 4, pp.
646,647. J
"All who are not decided followers of Christ are servants of Satan. In the unregen-
erate heart there is love of sin and a disposition to cherish and excuse it."- The Great
Controversy, p. 508.

The Days ofNoah/Our Days D Monday

November 4
3. What sins brought on the Flood in the days of Noah? Genesis 6:1,2,5, 11-13.
What did Christ say about the condition of the world in these last days? Luke
17:26; Matthew 24:12.

-20 -
"Because iniquity abounds, the love of many waxes cold. The word 'many' refers
to the professed followers of Christ. They are affected by the prevailing iniquity and
backslide from God, but it is not necessary that they should be thus affected. The
cause of this declension is that they do not stand clear from this iniquity. The fact that
their love to God is waxing cold because iniquity abounds shows that they are, in
some sense, partakers in this iniquity, or it would not affect their love for God and
their zeal and fervor in His cause.
"A terrible picture of the condition of the world has been presented before me.
Immorality abounds everywhere. Licentiousness is the special sin of this age. Never
did vice lift its deformed head with such boldness as now. The people seem to be
benumbed, and the lovers of virtue and true goodness are nearly discouraged by its
boldness, strength, and prevalence. The iniquity which abounds is not merely confin-
ed to the unbeliever and the scoffer. Would that this were the case, but it is not. Many
men and women who profess the religion of Christ are guilty. Even some who profess
to be looking for His appearing are no more prepared for that event than Satan
himself."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 346.
4. Against what are the people of God to be warned repeatedly? Ephesians 5:3,
4; Galatians 5: 19. What are the far-reaching claims of the seventh command-
ment? Matthew 5:27, 28.

"But the words of Jesus, 'Blessed are the pure in heart,' have a deeper meaning-
not merely pure in the sense in which the world understands purity, free from that
which is sensual, pure from lust, but true in the hidden purposes and motives of the
soul, free from pride and self-seeking, humble, unselfish, childlike."- Thoughts From the
Mount of Blessing, p. 25.
Spiritual Blindness D Tuesday
November 5
5. What is the cause of spiritual blindness? Isaiah 59:2; Ephesians 4:17-19; 2
Corinthians 4:4. When men close their eyes to the evidences of the truth and
refuse to obey the Lord, in what condition do they walk? Zephaniah 1:17
(first part); John 3:19, 20.

"Every impure thought defiles the soul, impairs the moral sense, and tends to
obliterate the impressions of the Holy Spirit. It dims the spiritual vision, so that men
cannot behold God."- The Desire of Ages, p. 302.
"It is not God that blinds the eyes of men or hardens their hearts. He sends them
light to correct their errors, and to lead them in safe paths; it is by the rejection of this
light that the eyes are blinded and the heart hardened. Often the process is gradual, and
almost imperceptible. Light comes to the soul through God's word, through His servants,
or by the direct agency of His Spirit; but when one ray of light is disregarded, there is a
partial benumbing of the spiritual perceptions, and the second revealing of light is less
clearly discerned. So the darkness increases, until it is night in the soul." -Ibid., p. 322.
6. As a consequence of their wrong choice, what feelings and thoughts do they
often cherish regarding God and His requirements? Psalm 10:4, 11; 14:1.

"It is the effect of sin to deaden the moral perceptions, so that the wrong-doer does
not realize the enormity of transgression; and without the convicting power of the Holy
Spirit he remains in partial blindness to his sin. It is the duty of Christ's servants to
show these erring ones their peril. Those who destroy the effect of the warning, by
blinding the eyes of sinners to the real character and results of sin, often flatter them-
selves that they thus give evidence of their charity; but they, are working directly to op-
pose and hinder the work of God's Holy Spirit; they are lulling the sinner to rest on the

- 21-
brink of destruction; they are making themselves partakers in his guilt, and incurring
a fearful responsibility for his impenitence. Many, many, have gone down to ruin as
the result of this false and deceptive sympathy." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 361.
Dangerous Associates D Wednesday
November 6
7. What is our duty toward associates who show godless behavior? Ephesians
5:11; 1 Corinthians 5:11.

8. Why are they to be avoided? 1 Corinthians 15:33. What example, adduced by

the Spirit of Prophecy, should be taken as a warning especially by our young
people?

"I might mention the cases of many others, but will forbear, except in a few in-
stances. J is a dangerous associate. He is a subject of this vice [self-abuse]. His influ-
ence is bad. The grace of God has no influence upon his heart. He has a good intellect,
.J
and his father has trusted much to this to balance him; but mental power alone is not .ft
a guarantee of virtuous superiority. The absence of religious principle makes him cor- ,
rupt at heart and sly in his wrongdoing. His influence is pernicious everywhere. He is
infidel in his principles and glories in his skepticism. When with those of his own age,
or those younger than himself, he talks knowingly of religious things and jests and
sneers at truth and the Bible. This pretended knowledge has an influence to corrupt
minds and lead young men to feel ashamed of the truth. Such companions should be
wholly avoided, for this is the only sure course of safety."-Testimonies. vol. 2, pp. 406, 407.
Sowing and Reaping D Thursday
November 7
9. What consciousness often prompts fears in the hearts of backsliders and sin-
ners in general? Psalm 50:21, 22; 139:7, 8; Galatians 6:7, 8. How did Sister
White warn a brother who was haunted by such fears?

"Every man will be rewarded according as his wor1}s have been, whether good or
evil. That which a man sows will he also'reap. 1'here will be no failure in the crop. The
harvest is sure and plentiful. You have tried to blind your brethren in regard to your
course. How could you do so, when you knew that you were guilty in the sight of God?
If you value your soul's salvation, make thorough work for eternity....
"You have possessed a spirit which has led you from the path of rectitude, and
now you are troubled. Doubts, and fears, and despair seize you. There is but one way
out, and that is by the way of confession."- Testimonies, vol. pp. 300, 301.
10. Where will those who remain impure and blind find no admittance? Revela-
tion 21:27; 22:15; 1 Corinthians 6:9, 10.

their own sins?

Everything Lies Bare Before God o Sunday
November 10
1. What lies completely exposed before the eyes of God? Hebrews 4:13; Jeremiah
17:10.

"The discrimination revealed by Christ in weighing the characters of those who

have taken to themselves His name, as Christians, leads us to realize more fully that
every individual is under His supervision. He is acquainted with the thoughts and in-
tents of the heart, as well as with every word and act. He knows all about our religious
experience; He knows whom we love and serve."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 7, p. 959.

2. What event, which is taking place in the heavenly sanctuary, will disclose even
the secret motives of men? Romans 2: 16. How does Sister White describe the
judgment?

"Sins that have not been repented of and forsaken will not be pardoned and blotted
out of the books of record, but will stand to witness against the sinner in the day of God.
He may have committed his evil deeds in the light of day or in the darkness of night;
but they were open and manifest before Him with whom we have to do. Angels of God
witnessed each sin and registered it in the unerring records. Sin may be concealed,
denied, covered up from father, mother, wife, children, and associates; no one but the
guilty actors may cherish the least suspicion of the wrong; but it is laid bare before the
intelligences of heaven. The darkness of the darkest night, the secrecy of all deceptive
arts, is not sufficient to veil one thought from the knowledge of the Eternal. God has an
exact record of every unjust account and every unfair dealing. He is not deceived by
appearances of piety. He makes no mistakes in His estimation of character. Men may
be deceived by those who are corrupt in heart, but God pierces all disguises and reads
the inner life."- The Great Controversy, p. 486.

God's Call to All Men o Monday

November 11
3. What call is extended to sinners while the door of probation is open? Isaiah
55:7.

- 23-
"God has a perfect photograph of every man's character, and this photograph He
compares with His law. He reveals to man the defects that mar his life, and calls upon
him to repent and turn from sin."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p.
1085.

4. What call comes to us who profess to know the truth? 1 Peter 1:15, 16; Mat-
thew 5:48.

"Weare sons and daughters of God. In order to know how to behave ourselves
circumspectly, we must follow where Christ leads the way. For thirty years He lived
the life of a perfect man, meeting the highest standard of perfection."- The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, pp. 1085, 1086.

Self-Examination D Tuesday
November 12

5. What are we admonished to do in order to find out how far we are from the
goal that is set before us (Philippians 3:13, 14)? 2 Corinthians 13:5. By whose
help are we to search our hearts? Psalm 139:23, 24.

"And while we are not to mourn over the time of trouble to come, let us, as Christ's
followers, search our hearts as with a lighted candle to see what manner of spirit we
are of. For our present and eternal good, let us criticize our actions, to see how they
stand in the light of the law of God. For this law is our standard. Let every soul search
his own heart."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 986.

6. Before what mirror should we examine ourselves? James 1:21-25; Hebrews

4:12; 1 Peter 1:22.

"God's law reaches the feelings and motives, as well as the outward acts. It reveals
the secrets of the heart, flashing light upon things before buried in darkness. God
knows every thought, every purpose, every plan, every motive. The books of heaven
record the sins that would have been committed had there been opportunity. God will
bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing. By His law He measures the
character of every man."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1085.

Joint Operation D Wednesday

November 13

7. How restricted is our ability to change ourselves? Job 14:4; John 15:5. Who
is able and willing to purify us if we are willing to cooperate? Ezekiel 36:26,
27; 1 John 1:9.

"It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to escape from the pit of sin in which we are
sunken. Our hearts are evil, and we cannot change them.... Education, culture, the
exercise of the will, human effort, all have their proper sphere, but here they are
powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of behavior, but they cannot l'

change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life. There must be a power work-
ing from within, a new life from above, before men can be changed from sin to
holiness. That power is Christ." -Steps to Christ, p. 18.

8. How are we to cooperate with the Holy Spirit? 2 Corinthians 7:1; Philippians
2: 12; 4:8. What can we achieve in association with Christ? Philippians 4: 13.

- 24-
"God alone can give us the victory. He desires us to have the mastery over our-
selves, our own will and ways. But He cannot work in us without our consent and
cooperation." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 142.
"The work of gaining salvation is one of copartnership, a joint operation. There is
to be cooperation betweeen God and the repentant sinner. This is necessary for the
formation of right principles in the character. Man is to make earnest efforts to over-
come that which hinders him from attaining to perfection. But he is wholly dependent
upon God for success. Human effort of itself is not sufficient. Without the aid of
divine power it avails nothing. God works and man works."-TheActsoftheApostles, p. 482.

God's Promises o Thursday

November 14

9. What is promised to the pure in heart? Matthew 5:8. How are the power and
love of God revealed to us in this life?

"The Holy Spirit takes the truth concerning God and Him whom He hath sent, and
t'
opens it to the understanding and to the heart. The pure in heart see God in a new and
endearing relation, as their Redeemer; and while they discern the purity and loveliness
of His character, they long to reflect His image....
"The pure in heart discern the Creator in the works of His mighty hand, in the
things of beauty that comprise the universe. In His written word they read in clearer
lines the revelation of His mercy, His goodness, and His grace. The truths that are hid-
den from the wise and prudent are revealed to babes. The beauty and preciousness of
truth, which are undiscerned by the worldly-wise, are constantly unfolding to those
who have a trusting, childlike desire to know and to do the will of God. We discern the
truth by becoming, ourselves, partakers of the divine nature."- Thoughts From the Mount
of Blessing, pp. 26, 27.

10. How will the promise of the Lord be fulfilled at His second coming?Isaiah
25:9; 1 John 3:1, 2.

"When Christ shall come in His glory, the wicked cannot endure to behold Him.
The light of His presence, which is life to those who love Him, is death to the ungodly.
The expectation of His coming is to them a 'fearful looking for of judgment and fiery
indignation.' Hebrews 10:27. When He shall appear, they will pray to be hidden from
the face of Him who died to redeem them. But to hearts that have become purified
through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, all is changed."-ThoughtsFrom the Mount ofBless-
ing, p. 26.

The Fall of Lucifer oSunday

November 17

1. What condition prevailed in the universe before Lucifer's rebellion? (Note.)

How was the peace of the universe disturbed? Ezekiel 28:15, 17; Revelation
12:7,8.

"So long as all created beings acknowledged the allegiance of love, there was per-
fect harmony throughout the universe of God. It was the joy of the heavenly host to
fulfill the purpose of their Creator. They delighted in reflecting His glory and showing
forth His praise. And while love to God was supreme, love for one another was con-
fiding and unselfish. There was no note of discord to mar the celestial harmonies. But
a change came over this happy state. There was one who perverted the freedom that
God had granted to His creatures. Sin originated with him who, next to Christ, had
been most honored of God and was highest in power and glory among the inhabitants
of heaven.... Little by little Lucifer came to indulge the desire for self-exaltation....
Now the perfect harmony of heaven was broken."-Patriarclts and Prophets, p. 35.

2. What happened to Satan as a result of his rebellion against the government

of God? What is Satan's self-appointed mission in this world? Revelation
12:9. What situation has he succeeded in creating on earth? 1 John 5:19;
Psalm 14:2,3; Isaiah 48:22.

"From the very beginning of the great controversy in heaven it has been Satan's
purpose to overthrow the law of God. It was to accomplish this that he entered upon his
rebellion against the Creator, and though he was cast out of heaven he has continued
the same warfare upon the earth. To deceive men, and thus lead them to transgress
God's law, is the object which he has steadfastly pursued. Whether this be accom-
plished by casting aside the law altogether, or by rejecting one of its precepts, the result
will be ultimately the same. He hat offends 'in one point,' manifests contempt for the
whole law; his influence and example are on the side of transgression; he becomes
'guilty of all.' James 2:10."-The Great Controversy, p. 582.

Peace Destroyed D Monday
November 18

3. What destroys our individual peace? Psalm 38:3-6.

"It is the love of selfthat destroys our peace."- Thoughts From the MOlmtofBlessing, p. 16.
"Sin has destroyed our peace. While self is unsubdued, we can find no rest."-The
Desire of Ages, p. 336.

4. What ruins the peace of the home? Proverbs 16:28 (first part). Whereby is
the peace of the church often sacrificed? Give an example. Mark 9:33, 34.

"Do not try to compel each other to do as you wish. You cannot do this and retain
each other's love. Manifestations of self-will destroy the peace and happiness of the
home." -The Adventist Home, p. 107.
"Upon the occurrence of trials in the church let every member examine his own
heart to see if the cause of trouble does not exist within. By spiritual pride, a desire to
dictate, an ambitious longing for honor or position, a lack of self-control, by the in-
dulgence of passion or prejudice, by instability or lack of judgment, the church may
be disturbed and her peace sacrificed."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 241.

Religious Persecution D Tuesday

November 19

5. What does the Gospel cause when it is accepted by some and rejected by
others iiI the same family? Matthew 10:34-36. How do we explain the perfect
harmony existing between the words of Christ in Matthew 10:34-36 and His
declaration in John 14:27?

"The gospel is a message of peace. Christianity is a system which, received and

obeyed, would spread peace, harmony, and happiness throughout the earth. The
religion of Christ will unite in close brotherhood all who accept its teachings. It was
the mission of Jesus to reconcile men to God, and thus to one another. But the world
at large are under the control of Satan, Christ's bitterest foe. The gospel presents to
them principles of life which are wholly at variance with their habits and desires, and
they rise in rebellion against it. They hate the purity which reveals and condemns
their sins, and they persecute and destroy those who would urge upon them its just
and holy claims. It is in this sense-because the exalted truths it brings occasion
hatred and strife-that the gospel is called a sword." -The Great Controversy, p. 47.

6. What must the true followers of Christ expect on the part of the world? John
17:14.

"There is another and more important question that should engage the attention of
the churches of today. The apostle Paul declares that 'all that will live godly in Christ
Jesus shall suffer persecution.' 2 Timothy 3:12. Why is it, then, that persecution seems
in a great degree to slumber? The only reason is that the church has conformed to the
world's standard and therefore awakens no opposition." - The Great Controversy, p. 48.

Wars D Wednesday
November 20

7. What causes political tension and wars? James 4:1-3.

- 27-
8. What is the fundamental cause of all unrest and bloodshed? Isaiah 59:4, 7, 8;
Romans 3:11, 12, 15-18; Hosea 4:1,2.

"The world is at enmity with the law of God; sinners are at enmity with their
Maker; and as a result they are at enmity with one another."-TheDesireofAges, pp. 302-305.
"Satanic agencies have made the earth a stage for horrors, which no language can
describe. War and bloodshed are carried on by nations claiming to be Christian. A
disregard for the law of God has brought its sure result." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 974.

Wars (continued) D Thursday

November 21

9. Why do all efforts toward establishing peace in the world result in failure?
Jeremiah 6:14; Ezekiel 7:25.

"Men cannot manufacture peace. Human plans for the purification and uplifting of
individuals or of society will fail of producing peace, because they do not reach the
heart. The only power that can create or perpetuate true peace is the grace of Christ.
When this is implanted in the heart, it will cast out the evil passions that cause strife
and dissension." - The Desire of Ages, p. 305.

10. What will show in the near future that without God there can be no peace in
the world? 1 Thessalonians 5:3.

"The great mass of the world will reject God's mercy, and will be overwhelmed in
swift and irretrievable ruin." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 167.
"Satan will then [after close of probation] plunge the inhabitants of the earth into
one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds
of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be
involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old."- The Great
Controversy, p. 614.

Jesus Christ, the Prince ofPeace D Sunday

November 24

1. What is Jesus to those who receive Him into their lives? Isaiah 9:6.

2. What would Christ have given to Israel and to the world if they had received
Him? Isaiah 9:7; Luke 2:14; 19:42.

"If Jerusalem had known what it was her privilege to know, and had heeded the
light which Heaven had sent her, she might have stood forth in the pride of prosperi-
ty, the queen of kingdoms, free in the strength of her God-given power. There would
have been no armed soldiers standing at her gates, no Roman banners waving from
her walls. The glorious destiny that might have blessed Jerusalem had she accepted
her Redeemer rose before the Son of God. He saw that she might through Him have
been healed of her grievous malady, liberated from bondage, and established as the
mighty metropolis of the earth. From her walls the dove of peace would have gone
forth to all nations. She would have been the world's diadem of glory. "-The Desire of
Ages, p. 577.

Our God-Given Mission D Monday

November 25

I) 3. What is our God-given mission to the world? 2 Corinthians 5:18-20.

"Christ's followers are sent to the world with the message of peace. Whoever, by
the quiet, unconscious influence of a holy life, shall reveal the love of Christ; whoever,
by word or deed, shall lead another to renounce sin and yield his heart to God, is a
peacemaker." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 28.

4. What condition enables us to go out as ambassadors of peace to the world?

a) Peace with God: Isaiah 27:5; Romans 5:1.

- 29-
b) Peace and unity among ourselves as brethren: Mark 9:50 (second part); John
13:35; 17:21.
"When men are bound together, not by force or self-interest, but by love, they
show the working of an influence that is above every human influence. Where this
oneness exists, it is evidence that the image of God is being restored in humanity, that
a new principle of life has been implanted. It shows that there is power in the divine
nature to withstand the supernatural agencies of evil, and that the grace of God sub-
dues the selfishness inherent in the natural heart. This love, manifested in the church,
will surely stir the wrath of Satan." - The Desire of Ages, p. 678.

Warning Against False Concepts ofPeace D Tuesday

November 26

5. When we make peace with God, with whom are we at war? Ephesians 6: 11,
12.

"The Lord has singled us out and made us subjects of His marvelous mercy. Shall
we be charmed with the pratings of the apostate? Shall we choose to take our stand
with Satan and his host? Shall we join with the transgressors of God's law? Rather let
it be our prayer: 'Lord, put enmity between me and the serpent.' If we are not at en-
mity with his works of darkness, his powerful folds encircle us, and his sting is ready at
any moment to be driven to our hearts. We should count him a deadly foe."-Testimonies,
vol. 4, pp. 595, 596.
"If we will consent to lay down our arms, to lower the blood-stained banner, to
become the captives and servants of Satan, we may be released from the conflict and
the suffering. But this peace will be gained only at the loss of Christ and heaven. We
cannot accept peace on such conditions. Let it be war, war, to the end of earth's
history, rather than peace through apostasy and sin."- The Review and Herald, May 8, 1888.

6. How are we to maintain peace even through strife and contention? Romans
16:17, 18; Jude 3, 4, 16-19.

"The peace that Christ left His disciples is internal rather than external and was
ever to remain with His witnesses through strife and contention."- The Acts of the Apostles,
p.84.
"Until Christ shall appear in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory,
men will become perverse in spirit and turn from the truth to fables. The church will
yet see troublous times. She will prophesy in sackcloth. But although she must meet
heresies and persecutions, although she must battle with the infidel and the apostate,
yet by the help of God she is bruising the head of Satan." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 594.

Association With Christ D Wednesday

November 27

7. Through what relationship does a Christian enjoy perfect peace? 1 John 3:24;
Isaiah 26:3.

"When our will is swallowed up in the will of God, and we use His gifts to bless
others, we shall find life's burden light. He who walks in the way of God's command-
ments is walking in company with Christ, and in His love the heart is at rest."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 331.

- 30-
8. What evidence shows that association with Christ involves the keeping of the
commandments? 1 John 2:4. What is the connection between obedience and
peace? Isaiah 48:18; Psalm 119:165.

True Peacemakers oThursday

November 28

9. Describe, with a few examples, the character and deportment of a true peace-
maker. 2 Timothy 2:24,25; Romans 12:18-21; 1 Peter 3:16.

"He who is at peace with God and his fellow men cannot be made miserable. Envy
will not be in his heart; evil surmisings will find no room there; hatred cannot exist.
The heart that is in harmony with God is a partaker of the peace of heaven and will
diffuse its blessed influence on all around. The spirit of peace will rest like dew upon
hearts weary and troubled with worldly strife.... The spirit of peace is evidence of
their connection with heaven. The sweet savor of Christ surrounds them. The fragrance
of the life, the loveliness of the character, reveal to the world the fact that they are
children of God." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 27. 28.

10. What reward is promised to those who are peacemakers in the true sense of
the word? Matthew 5:9; Revelation 21:3, 4; Isaiah 32:18.

BLESSED ARE THEY

WHICH ARE PERSECUTED

"The world loves sin, and hates righteousness, and this was the cause of its hostil-
ity to Jesus. AU who refuse His infinite love will find Christianity a disturbing ele-
ment.... While those who yield to the influence of the Holy Spirit begin war with
themselves, those who cling to sin war against the truth and its represen-
tatives."-The Desire of Ages, p. 306.

theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:10).

Persecution Predicted in Eden D Sunday

December 1
1. What prediction is contained in the sentence pronounced upon Satan in Eden?
Genesis 3:15.

"The divine sentence pronounced against Satan after the fall of man was also a
prophecy, embracing all the ages to the close of time and foreshadowing the great
conflict to engage all the races of men who should live upon the earth." - The Great Con-
troversy. p. 505.

2. Who will be persecuted by the agents of Satan to the close of time? John
15: 18-20; 2 Timothy 3: 12. What promise is made to the faithful, persecuted
children of God? Matthew 5:10; Daniel 7:27.

"As Satan endeavored to cast reproach upon God, so do his agents seek to malign
God's people. The spirit which put Christ to death moves the wicked to destroy His
followers. All this is foreshadowed in that first prophecy: '1 will put enmity between
thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed.' And this will continue to
the close of time."-The Great Controversy. p. 507.
"Between righteousness and sin, love and hatred, truth and falsehood, there is an
irrepressible conflict. When one presents the love of Christ and the beauty of holiness,
he is drawing away the subjects of Satan's kingdom, and the prince of evil is aroused to
resist it. Persecution and reproach await all who are imbued with the Spirit of Christ."
- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 29.

Examples ofPersecution D Monday

December 2
3. When and where did persecution start in this world? 1 John 3: 12 (first part).
Why did Cain hate and kill Abel? 1 John 3:12 (second part).

"When Cain saw that his offering was rejected, he was angry with the Lord and
with Abel; he was angry that God did not accept man's substitute in place of the

- 32-
sacrifice divinely ordained, and angry with his brother for choosing to obey God in-
stead of joining in rebellion against Him.... Reason and conscience told him that
Abel was in the right; but he was enraged that one who had been wont to heed his
counsel should now presume to disagree with him, and that he could gain no sym-
pathy in his rebellion. In the fury of his passion he slew his brother.
"Cain hated and killed his brother, not for any wrong that Abel had done, but 'be-
cause his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.' 1 John 3:12. So in all ages
the wicked have hated those who were better than themselves." -Patriarchs and Prophets,
pp. 73. 74.

4. What did the Jews do to the prophets and especially to the promised Messiah?
Acts 7:52. Why was Christ persecuted to death? Acts 3:14; 10:38.

"In an unpitying confederacy, evil men and evil angels arrayed themselves against
the Prince of Peace. Though His every word and act breathed of divine compassion,
His unlikeness to the world provoked the bitterest hostility. Because He would give
no license for the exercise of the evil passions of our nature, He aroused the fiercest
opposition and enmity. So it is with all who will live godly in Christ Jesus."-Thoughts
From the Mount of Blessing, p. 29.

1260 Years of Oppression D Tuesday

December 3

5. What period of persecution was mentioned by Daniel and John the Revelator?
Daniel 7:21, 25; Revelation 12:6, 14; 13:7; 17:6.

"In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. Its seat of power
was fixed in the imperial city, and the bishop of Rome was declared to be the head over
the entire church. Paganism had given place to the papacy. The dragon had given to
the beast 'his power, and his seat, and great authority.' Revelation 13:2.... And now
began the 1260 years of papal oppression foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and the
Revelation. Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:5-7. Christians were forced to choose either to
yield their integrity and accept the papal ceremonies and worship, or to wear away
their lives in dungeons, or to suffer death by the rack, the fagot, or the headsman's
ax.... Persecution opened upon the faithful with greater fury than ever before, and
the world became a vast battlefield. For hundreds of years the church of Christ found
refuge in seclusion and obscurity."- The Great Controversy, pp. 54. 55.

6. What did Christ say about this time of religious intolerance? Matthew 24:21,
22; Luke 21:16, 17.

Beneficial Results ofPersecution D Wednesday

December 4

7. What benefit did persecution bring to the early Christian church as far as
their missionary outreach was concerned? Acts 8:1; 11:19. What will happen
in our days, when the storm of persecution breaks upon us?

"But ... when the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, the true sheep will
hear the true Shepherd's voice. Self-denying efforts will be put forth to save the lost,
and many who have strayed from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd.
The people of God will draw together and present to the enemy a united front. In view
of the common peril, strife for supremacy will cease; there will be no disputing as to

- 33-
who shall be accounted greatest. No one of the true believers will say: 'I am of Paul;
and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas.' The testimony of one and all will be: 'I cleave unto
Christ; I rejoice in Him as my personal Saviour.' "-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401.

8. For what other purpose is persecution permitted? 1 Peter 1:6, 7; 1 Corin-

thians 3: 13.

"The purification of the people of God cannot be accomplished without their suffer-
ing. God permits the fires of affliction to consume the dross, to separate the worthless
from the valuable, that the pure metal may shine forth. He passes us from one fire to
another, testing our true worth. If we cannot bear these trials, what will we do in the
time of trouble? If prosperity or adversity discover falseness, pride, or selfishness in
our hearts, what shall we do when God tries every man's work as by fire, and lays bare
the secrets of all hearts?
"True grace is willing to be tried; if we are loath to be searched by the Lord, our
condition is serious indeed. God is the refiner and purifier of souls; in the heat of the
furnace the dross is separated forever from the true silver and gold of the Christian
character. Jesus watches the test. He knows what is needed to purify the precious
metal that it may reflect the radiance of His divine love."-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 85, 86.

The Impending Conflict D Thursday

December 5

9. What prophecy will be fulfilled in the near future? Revelation 12: 17. Why
will the faithful remnant be persecuted? Acts 5:29 (second part); Revelation
14:12.

"In the near future we shall see these words fulfilled as the Protestant churches
unite with the world and with the papal power against commandment keepers. The
same spirit which actuated papists in ages past will lead Protestants to pursue a
similar course toward those who will maintain their loyalty to God."-Testimonies, vol. 5,
p.449.

10. What will be the main issue in the coming religious conflict? Revelation 13: 16,
17.

"Church and state are now making preparations for the future conflict. Protestants
are working in disguise to bring Sunday to the front, as did the Romanists. Throughout
the land the papacy is piling up her lofty and massive structures, in the secret recesses
of which her former persecutions are to be repeated."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 449, 450.

A Weapon of Satan D Sunday

December 8
1. What is one of the weapons used by Satan in his warfare against the children
of God? Revelation 12:10.

"Men's hearts are no softer today than when Christ was upon the earth. They will
do all in their power to aid the great adversary in making it as hard as possible for the
servants of Christ, just as the people did with Christ when He was upon the earth.
They will scourge with the tongue of slander and falsehood. They will criticize, and
turn against the servant of God the very efforts he is leading them to make. They will,
with their evil surmisings, see fraud and dishonesty where all is right and where perfect
integrity exists."- Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 234.

2. How did Satan employ this weapon against: (a) John the Baptist and Jesus?
Matthew 11:18, 19; John 8:48; (b) the apostle Paul? Acts 24:5; (c) the early
Christians? Acts 28:22.

"As men see that they cannot maintain their position by the Scriptures, many
determine to maintain it at all hazards, and with a malicious spirit they assail the
character and motives of those who stand in defense of unpopular truth. It is the same
policy which has been pursued in all ages. Elijah was declared to be a troubler in
Israel, Jeremiah a traitor, Paul a polluter of the temple. From that day to this, those
who would be loyal to truth have been denounced as seditious, heretical, or schismatic.
Multitudes who are too unbelieving to accept the sure word of prophecy will receive
with unquestioning credulity an accusation against those who dare to reprove fashion-
able sins. This spirit will increase more and more."- The Great Controversy, pp. 458, 459.

A Weapon of Satan (continued) D Monday

December 9
3. How did the servants of Satan fight against the truth during the sixteenth
and nineteeth centuries? (Note.) What words of Christ were then dear to the
advocates of the truth? Luke 6:22.

"In the days of the Reformation its enemies charged all the evils of fanaticism upon
the very ones who were laboring most earnestly against it. A similar course was pur-

- 35-
sued by the opposers of the advent movement. And not content with misrepresenting
and exaggerating the errors of extremists and fanatics, they circulated unfavorable
reports that had not the slightest semblance of truth."- The Great Controversy, p. 397.

4. What description illustrates the opposition and abuse that our brethren have
suffered since the beginning of the Reform Movement? 1 Corinthians 4: 12, 13.

"There has ever been a class professing godliness, who, instead of following on to
know the truth, make it their religion to seek some fault of character or error of faith
in those with whom they do not agree. Such are Satan's right-hand helpers. Accusers
of the brethren are not few, and they are always active when God is at work and His
servants are rendering Him true homage. They will put a false coloring upon the
words and acts of those who love and obey the truth. They will represent the most
earnest, zealous, self-denying servants of Christ as deceived or deceivers. It is their
work to misrepresent the motives of every true and noble deed, to circulate insinua-
tions, and arouse suspicion in the minds of the inexperienced. In every conceivable
manner they will seek to cause that which is pure and righteous to be regarded as foul
and deceptive."- The Great Controversy, p. 519.

Church Problems Misused D Tuesday

December 10

5. What problems have always a licted the church, even in her best days? 1
Corinthians 3:3; James 3:14, 16. How does Satan misuse such problems to
create greater evils?

"If Satan can employ professed believers to act as accusers of the brethren, he is
justly pleased; for those who do this are just as truly serving him as was Judas when he
betrayed Christ. ... Floating rumors are often the destroyers of unity among brethren.
There are some who watch with open mind and ears to catch flying scandal. They
gather up little incidents which may be trifling in themselves, but which are repeated
and exaggerated until a man is made an offender for a word. Their motto seems to be,
'Report, and we will report it.' These talebearers are doing Satan's work with surpris-
ing fidelity, little knowing how offensive their course is to God.... The door of the
mind should be closed against 'They say,' or 'I have heard.' "- Testimonies to Ministers, pp.
504,505.

6. What kind of "believers" have always found their way into the church? 2
Timothy 3:5-7, 13; 4:3, 4. How is this problem often misused by people who
try to find excuses for rejecting the truth and criticizing the church?

"The world has no right to doubt the truth of Christianity because there are un-
worthy members in the church, nor should Christians become disheartened because
of these false brethren. How was it with the early church? Ananias and Sapphira joined
themselves to the disciples. Simon Magus was baptized. Demas, who forsook Paul,
had been counted a believer. Judas Iscariot was numbered with the apostles." -Christs
Object Lessons, pp. 72. 73.

"To believe that evil must not be condemned because this would condemn those
who practice the evil is to act in favor of falsehood .... Those who feel so very
peaceable in regard to the works of the men who are spoiling the faith of the people of
God, are guided by a delusive sentiment."-Special Testimonies. Series B. No.2. pp. 10, 11.

8. What unpleasant work is often required? Titus 1:13; 2:15; James 5:19, 20.
When personal efforts fail to bring positive results, what step may finally
become necessary? Matthew 18:17; 1 Timothy 5:20.

"He [God] shows us that when His people are found in sin they should at once
take decided measures to put that sin from them, that His frown may not rest upon
them all. But if the sins of the people are passed over by those in responsible posi-
tions, His frown will be upon them, and the people of God, as a body, will be held
responsible for those sins. In His dealings with His people in the past the Lord shows
the necessity of purifying the church from wrongs. One sinner may diffuse darkness
that will exclude the light of God from the entire congregation. When the people
realize that darkness is settling upon them, and they do not know the cause, they
should seek God earnestly, in great humility and self-abasement, until the wrongs
which grieve His Spirit are searched out and put away."-Testimonies. vol. 3, p. 265.
"When this instruction [Matthew 18:15-17] has been followed, the church has
cleared herself before God."-Ibid.. vol. 7, pp. 262, 263.

Victorious Attitude D Thursday

December 12

9. What will be our attitude if we have Christ with us? Matthew 5:44.

"0 that men, instead of dwelling upon the faults and errors of their brethren, had
talked with God concerning their own dangers and defects of character, leaving their
fellow-workers with the Lord Jesus! 0 that those who had grievances had gone directly
to those whom they supposed had wronged them, and said, 'My brother, will you for-
give me? I have had unchristian feelings toward you, because I thought that you were
trying to hurt my influence. I know that God is working to make hearts one. If I have
grieved you in any way, will you forgive me? Christ has forgiven my mistakes, and I
will forgive everything that I have thought was an injury to me. Let us be one. Let us,
right here and in unity, offer up our petitions to the Heavenly Father.' "-Special Testimonies.
Series B. No.2, p. 27.

10. What will be the reward of those who patiently suffer criticism, accusations,
and revilement because of the truth? Matthew 5:11,12; Luke 6:23.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, December 21, 1985

YE ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH

"Though the wicked know it not, they owe even the blessings of this life to the
presence, in the world, of God's people whom they despise and oppress. But if
Christians are such in name only, they are like the salt that has lost its savor."-
The Desire of Ages, p. 306.
.
KEY TEXT: "Ye are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13).

The Salt of the Earth oSunday

December 15
1. What did Christ mean when He said to the disciples, Ye are the salt of the
earth? Matthew 5:13. (Note.) How can we become the salt of the earth? Titus
2:11, 12; 1 Peter 2:9; 3:15, 16.

"Salt is valued for its preservative properties; and when God calls His children salt,
He would teach them that His purpose in making them the subjects of His grace is that
they may become agents in saving others. The object of God in choosing a people before
all the world was not only that He might adopt them as His sons and daughters, but
that through them the world might receive the grace that bringeth salvation.... In like
manner Christians who are purified through the truth will possess saving qualities that
preserve the world from utter moral corruption."- Thoughts From the Mount 0/ Blessing, pp.
35,36.

2. What miracle, wrough"t in the days of~Elisha, 'illustrates God's purpose for
us? 2 Kings 2:19-22.

"In casting salt into the bitter spring, Elisha taught the same spiritual lesson im-
parted centuries later by the Saviour to His disciples when He declared, 'Ye are the salt
of the earth.' Matthew 5:13. The salt mingling with the polluted spring purified its
waters and brought life and blessing where before had been blighting and death.
When God compares His children to salt, He would teach them that His purpose in
making them the subjects of His grace is that they may become agents in saving
others." -Prophets and Kings, p. 231.

The Love of God in Our Hearts o Monday

December 16
3. If we are the salt of the earth, what principle will inspire all our thoughts,
words, and actions? 1 Corinthians 13:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 3:12. What evi-
dence will show that we have the love of God? 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

"The savor of the salt represents the vital power of the Christian-the love of Jesus
in the heart, the righteousness of Christ pervading the life."- Thoughts From the Mount 0/
Blessing, p. 36.

- 38-
4. When other measures fail, what power may still ensure success? 1 Corinthians
13:8 (first part); 1 Peter 4:8.

"Love works not for profit nor reward; yet God has ordained that great gain shall
be the certain result of every labor of love. It is diffusive in Its nature and quiet in its
operation, yet strong and mighty in its purpose to overcome great evils. It is melting
and transforming in its influence, and will take hold of the lives of the sinful and affect
their hearts when every other means has proved unsuccessfuL" - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 135.
"No one has ever been reclaimed from a wrong position by censure and reproach;
but many have thus been driven from Christ and led to seal their hearts against convic-
tion. A tender spirit, a gentle, winning deportment, may save the erring and hide a mul-
titude of sins. The revelation of Christ in your own character will have a transforming
power upon all with whom you come in contact." - Thoughts From the Mount ofBlessing, p. 129.

Power to Move the World D Tuesday

December 17

5. For what purpose did Jesus often mingle with others? Matthew 9:10-12. How
can we have success through our influence?

"Salt must be mingled with the substance to which it is added; it must penetrate
and infuse in order to preserve. So it is through personal contact and association that
men are reached by the saving power of the gospel. They are not saved in masses, but
as individuals. Personal influence is a power. We must come close to those whom we
desire to benefit." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 36.

6. How and when shall we have power to move the world? 1 John 2:5; 5:1-3.

"The world can only be warned by seeing those who believe the truth sanctified
through the truth, acting upon high and holy principles, showing in a high, elevated
sense, the line of demarcation between those who keep the commandments of God
and those who trample them under their feet." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, p. 980.
"When those who profess to serve God follow Christ's example, practicing the
principles of the law in their daily life; when every act bears witness that they love
God supremely and their neighbor as themselves, then will the church have power to
move the world," -Christs Object Lessons, p. 340.

A Negative Attitude D Wednesday

December 18

7. How can our salt become insipid? Hebrews 12:15; Luke 21:34.

"It is in proportion to our own devotion and consecration to Christ that we exert
an influence for the blessing and uplifting of mankind. If there is no actual service, no
genuine love, no reality of experience, there is no power to help, no connection with
heaven, no savor of Christ in the life. Unless the Holy Spirit can use us as agents through
whom to communicate to the world the truth as it is in Jesus, we are as salt that has
lost its savor and is entirely worthless, By our lack of the grace of Christ we testify to
the world that the truth which we claim to believe has no sanctifying power; and thus,
so far as our influence goes, we make of no effect the word of God."- Thoughts From the
Mount of Blessing, p. 37.

- 39-
8. How do professed Christians lose their influence in the world? Romans 2:21-
24; Revelation 3: 15, 16.

"The world is full of sickness, suffering, and iniquity. Nigh and afar off are souls
in poverty and distress, weighed down with a sense of guilt and perishing for want of
a saving influence. The gospel of truth is kept ever before them, yet they perish
because the example of those who should be a savor of life to them is a savor of death.
Their souls drink in bitterness because the springs are poisoned, when they should be
like a well of water springing up unto everlasting life." -Prophets and Kings, p. 232.

The Power ofInfluence D Thursday

December 19

9. Under what symbol did Solomon refer to his own baleful influence? Ecclesi-
astes 10:1. How can our influence become a "savor of death unto death"?

"That our influence should be as savor of death unto death is a fearful thought; yet
this is possible. Many who profess to gather with Christ are scattering from Him.
This is why the church is so weak. Many indulge freely in criticism and accusing. By
giving expression to suspicion, jealousy, and discontent, they yield themselves as in-
struments to Satan. Before they realize what they are doing, the adversary has
through them accomplished his purpose. The impression of evil has been made, the
shadow has been cast, the arrows of Satan have found their mark." -Christs Object
Lessons, pp. 340, 341.

10. Therefore, what is our great responsibility when we are in contact with
others? 2 Corinthians 2:14-16.

"Every soul is surrounded by an atmosphere of its own-an atmosphere, it may

be, charged with the life-giving power of faith, courage, and hope, and sweet with the
fragrance of love. Or it may be heavy and chill with the gloom of discontent and
selfishness, or poisonous with the deadly taint of cherished sin. By the atmosphere
surrounding us, every person with whom we come in contact is consciously or un-
consciously affected,
"This is a responsibility from which we cannot free ourselves, Our words, our
acts, our dress, our deportment, even the expression of the countenance, has an in-
fluence, Upon the impression thus made there hang results for good or evil which no
man can measure. Every impulse thus imparted is seed sown which will produce its
harvest." -Christs Object Lessons, pp. 339, 340.

Lesson 13 Sabbath, December 28, 1985

YE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

"Accountable beings must walk in the light that shines upon them. If they fail to
do this, their light becomes darkness, and their darkness is great in the same
degree as their light was abundant."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 123.

KEY TEXT: "Ye are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14).

Moral and Spiritual Darkness D Sunday

December 22

1. Who has control over the wicked inhabitants of the world? John 12:31; 14:30.
What does John say concerning Satan's dominion? 1 John 5:19.

2. As a result, what is the moral and spiritual situation of the world? Isaiah 60:2
(first part). Wherein will we find safety?

"Darkness is to cover the earth, and gross darkness the people. And as nearly all
around us are being enveloped in the thick darkness of error and delusion, it becomes
us to shake off stupidity and live near to God, where we can draw divine rays of light
and glory from the countenance of Jesus. As darkness thickens and error increases,
we should obtain a more thorough knQwledge of the truth and be prepared to main-
tain our position from the Scriptures." -Early Writings, pp. 104, 105.

Christ the Light of the World D Monday

December 23

3. Who came to bring light into the world and destroy the works of darkness?
John 9:5; 1 John 3:8 (second part).

4. What is written about the unwillingness of man to receive the Light of the
world? John 1:4, 5; Luke 18:8 (second part). Why does the condemnation of
God rest upon the wicked? John 3:19, 20.

"Those whose deeds are evil, will not come to the light, lest their deeds should be
reproved and their real characters revealed. If they continue in the path of transgres-
sion, and sever themselves entirely from the Redeemer, stubbornness, and sullen-
ness, and a spirit of revenge will take possession of them, and they will say to their
own souls, Peace, peace, when there is every reason that they should be alarmed, for
their steps are directed toward destruction."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 2, pp. 1017, 1018.

Christ in His Followers D Tuesday
December 24

5. What is said of those who accept Christ? John 8:12; 2 Corinthians 4:6.

"Apart from Christ we are like an unkindled taper, like the moon when her face is
turned away from the sun; we have not a single ray of brightness to shed into the
darkness of the world. But when we turn toward the Sun of Righteousness, when we
come in touch with Christ, the whole soul is aglow with the brightness of the divine
presence." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 40.

6. What change is seen in them? Ephesians 5:8; 1 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 2:2-6.

Progressive Experience D Wednesday

December 25

7. Describe the progressive experience of those who, by the grace of God, en-
deavor to live up to the light they have received. Proverbs 4:18.

"While Christ is dwelling in the heart it is impossible to conceal the light of His
presence, or for that light to grow dim. On the contrary, it will grow brighter and
brighter as day by day the mists of selfishness and sin that envelop the soul are
dispelled by the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.
134.

8. What do such believers feel constrained to do? Acts 4:20; 2 Corinthians 4: 13.

"Who can by faith behold the wonderful plan of redemption, the glory of the only-
begotten Son of God, and not speak of it? Who can contemplate the unfathomable
love that was manifested upon the cross of Calvary in the death of Christ, that we
might not perish, but have everlasting life-who can behold this and have no words
with which to extol the Saviour's glory?"- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 43, 44.

Our Mission to the World D Thursday

December 26

9. What is the mission of God's people in behalf of the world? Matthew 5:14-16;
Philippians 2: 15.

"The people of God are His representatives upon the earth, and He intends that
they shall be lights in the moral darkness of this world. Scattered all over the country,
in the towns, cities, and villages, they are God's witnesses, the channels through
which He will communicate to an unbelieving world the knowledge of His will and the
wonders of His grace. It is His plan that all who are partakers of the great salvation
shall be missionaries for Him. The piety of the Christian constitutes the standard by
which worldlings judge the gospel. Trials patiently borne, blessings gratefully receiv-
ed, meekness, kindness, mercy, and love, habitually exhibited, are the lights that
shine forth in the character before the world, revealing the contrast with the darkness
that comes of the selfishness of the natural heart." -Patri~rchs and Prophets, p. 134.

- 42-
10. What description is given of the finishing of God's work on earth? Isaiah
60:1; 58:7, 8; Habakkuk 2:14; Revelation 18:1.

"Who will warn the world, who will show them the better way, unless those who
have had the light of truth are sanctified through it and shall let their light so shine
that others may see their good works and glorify God?"- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 278.
"When Christ reigns in the soul, there is purity, freedom from sin. The glory, the
fullness, the completeness of the gospel plan is fulfilled in the life. The acceptance of
the Saviour brings a glow of perfect peace, perfect love, perfect assurance."-Christs
Object Lessons, p. 420.
"The revelation of His own glory in the form of humanity will bring heaven so
near to men that the beauty adorning the inner temple will be seen in every soul in
whom the Saviour dwells."-Ibid.
"Thus in the night of spiritual darkness God's glory is to shine forth through His
church in lifting up the bowed down and comforting those that mourn."-Ibid., p. 417.

that is sweeping over the world?

brighter in our experience?
