Section B: Summary
[10 marks]
Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

English is used widely throughout the world today. It has become the most
popular language of communication between countries and in many fields of human
endeavour. It is therefore important that we learn to use English properly, or otherwise
be at a severe disadvantage.
The only effective way of improving English is to use it as often as possible. In
school, the only time when English is used is during English lessons. This is certainly not
sufficient. So, wherever possible, try to speak English with friends and teachers who will
or can speak English.
Reading books, magazines and newspapers are good ways of improving
English. On the whole, these forms of media use grammatically correct English. We may
speak incorrect English and get away with it.
However, it is not so with printed words, as it has to be edited. Through reading,
we can also indirectly learn to use correct English while writing and speaking. Watching
television and listening to the radio are two more ways of improving English. English as it
is spoken by the English, Americans, Malaysians and others are distinctly different, due
to the localised accent. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously use English, that is, to
hear, read, speak and write it.

Rewrite on the ways to improve English:

• in continuous writing form.
• in one paragraph.
• in your own words as far as possible.
• in not more than 60 words including the 10 words given below.
Begin with:
We should improve our English as it has become the ...

PAPER 2
Section A: Guided Essay (30 marks)
One afternoon Samad was going home from school. He had to pass a river which is very
close to his house.
That afternoon he noticed a little boy. about five years old , playing near the river bank . All of a
sudden, Samad saw the boy fall into the river. The boy did not know how to swim as he was
struggling in the water.
Samad quickly jumped into the river to save the boy. Samad was a good swimmer. He swam
quickly to the boy and grabbed hold of him. Samad managed to bring the boy safely to the river
bank. The boy was unconscious.
Samad called the ambulance from a telephone boot nearby. The ambulance arrived shortly
after that and the boy was sent to the hospital.
Samad learnt that the little boy's name is Wei Chong who lives in the neighbourhood. Samad
contacted his parents. They were informed of what had happened to Wei Chong. The parents
rushed to the hospital to see their son.
Later, Wei Chong's parents thanked Samad for saving their son. They wanted to reward Samad
but he refused to accept the offer. He said he was glad that Wei Chong is now safe and sound.

Section C: Short Story (10 marks)

The Phantom of the Opera

In the novel The Phantom of the Opera, I admire Christine Daae the most as she is a gifted
singer who can win the heart of her audience with her lovely voice.
I also admire her because of her determination to work hard to develop her voice and singing
career. Christine is not afraid to be ambitious and wants to be the best opera singer in Paris.
Although she is poor and all alone in Paris, she has great determination to be the best singer in
Paris. She works very hard to improve her singing.
A third reason why I admire Christine is because she is really innocent and pure at heart. She is
kind and compassionate. She feels genuine sympathy for the lonely, hideous Phantom. She
kisses him on the mouth because she feels so sad and sorry for him. She can look beyond his
physical ugliness. She understands that he is a man who has the feelings and desires of any
other man.
