homosexual people.

Many old people in the United States are homophobic, but fewer
young people are.

Gay: a sexually preference for people of the same sex

My uncle is gay, so he was ecstatic when the United States


approved same-sex marriage.

Transgender: someone who does not have the same gender


identity of their sex

My friend was born a woman, but identifies as a man, so she is


transgender.

Lesbian: a woman who has romantic relationships with other


women

Many lesbian women attend an annual Gay Pride Festival in New


York City.

Conceal: to hide

Gay youths in conservative societies often conceal their sexual


orientation so they are not discriminated against.

ROLEPLAY
Using the prompts below, defend your position and try to
create a compromise with your classmates.

SITUATION
A learner or  the instructor will play the role of
a religious man who has just learned that his
brother is gay.  His classmates will give him
advice on the situation.
ROLES
Brother: You love your brother, but you are
also very religious.  In your religion,
homosexuality is a sin, so you are not sure
how to treat your brother.

Classmates: You are friends with the brother.  


You could be religious, non-religious, liberal,
conservative, etc.  You're job is to advise the
brother on what to do in this complicated
situation.
