Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

9th Grade ELA class of 45 students, with 25% of them being special needs.
This cooperative learning lesson plan will use the Jigsaw Method.

II. Subject/Skill:

Introduction to Shakespeare.

III. Objective(s)

After individual students of each group gathers information at each station,


students will be able to come together to prepare (application) a visual
presentation about Shakespeare.

IV. Procedures
1. Class will open with a quick game of “Who Said it: Tupac or
Shakespeare?”, which will be projected at the front of the class
(approximately 5 minutes).
2. Prerequisites: Research Skills, Note Taking, Reading for Comprehension,
using Google Slides
3. Jigsaw Activity:
a. Students will be separated into nine homogenous groups of five
students
b. There are five stations around the classroom, 1) The Renaissance,
2) Life of Shakespeare, 3) The Globe Theatre, 4) Shakespearian
Language, and 5) 15-minute Plays
i. Each station will contain articles, handouts and videos on
their particular topic and they have to explore them all, but
in any order they like.
c. Groups will decide which member will go to what station and
become the “resident expert” on that subject.
d. They will have about 35 minutes to gather all the information they
can at that station.
e. After they have completed their research students will go back to
their groups and compile the information they have all gathered
f. Students will use the information they have gathered to complete a
visual presentation in Google Slides with no more than 6 slides.
i. They will start this in class and complete at home.

2) QR Codes will be printed at each station for students to scan with their
phones and watch the videos with their own phones/headphones. Each QR
code will have a link to a video pertaining to that station’s topic. Links

VI. Grouping Structures


Students will be in groups of five. This lesson will take place in the classroom

VII. Modifications

Each station has a variety of ways to interact with the information. Students
can choose what to use that would best help them understand the info. (pg.
217)

VIII. Assessment
Successful completion of the visual presentation. This presentation should give
students an understanding of the attitude, behavior and environment Shakespeare
was writing for/in. This shouldn’t be verbatim facts. Instead the facts should be
used to gain a better understanding of why and how Shakespeare wrote so they
can use that when they begin reading Shakespeare.
