LESSON PLAN - OCTOBER 7, 2018

I. Topic/Grade Level:

Lesson Plan: Introduction to Newton’s Laws

Physics: Grade 8

Duration: 180 Hours

II. Standards:

Standards of Learning (SOL) Virginia -2018 – Physical Science (Virginia Department of

Education, 2018)

PH.3 The student will investigate and understand, through mathematical and experimental

processes, that there is a relationship among force, mass, and acceleration. Key laws include

a) Newton’s Law of Motion; and

b) Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation.

III. Goals and Student Learning Outcomes (Objectives):

GOAL 1:
Students will understand the definition and application of Newton’s Laws by analyzing the
relationship between force, mass, and acceleration.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME 1:

Students will demonstrate ability to define Newton’s Laws by understanding the


relationship between force, mass, and acceleration through creating a concept map
analyzing Newton’s Laws and their applications.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME 2:

Students will demonstrate understanding of Newton’s Laws by analyzing the


relationship between force, mass, and acceleration through simple experimentation
and practicing mathematical calculations.

GOAL 2:

Students will understand Newton’s Laws through engaging in further exploration and
experimentation though research.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME 1:

Students will demonstrate understanding of Newton’s Laws and their application to


real-life scenarios by analyzing and evaluating an instructional video on Newton’s
laws and investigating and creating simple experiments to demonstrate Newton’s Laws.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME 2:

Students will demonstrate understanding of Newton’s Laws by creating a visual


presentation including analysis and evaluation of lesson contents from video
presentation, prescribed reading resources and research material and experimentation
scenarios on Newton’s Laws and their applications.

The lesson will be conducted in a blended learning environment with teacher/instructor facilitation

and guidance and online study.

VI. Diversity / Differentiation:

Students with special needs will be facilitated with differentiated instruction through assistive

technology (AT), accommodations and modifications as determined by individualized Education

Plans (IEP).

• Assistive technology will include hearing aids, voice recognition programs, screen readers,

and screen enlargement applications, automatic page-turners, book holders, and adapted

pencil grips, closed captioning.

• Accommodations will include accommodations to do with presentation/material, response,

setting, timing, scheduling and organization skills.

• Modifications will include instructional , assignment and curriculum modifications as

deemed appropriate.

VIII. Prior Knowledge:


Prior to this lesson, students have reviewed, learned, identified contents and material related to

Virginia Science SOL PH.2:

PH2. The student will investigate and understand, through mathematical and experimental

processes, that there is a relationship between position and time. Key topics include

a) displacement, velocity, and uniform acceleration;

b) linear motion;

c) uniform circular motion; and

d) projectile motion.

Lesson Placement in the Unit:


Physical science: Concepts in action – Chapter 12 – Forces and Motion

This lesson covers knowledge and learning content related to Virginia Science SOL PH.3:

PH.3 The student will investigate and understand, through mathematical and experimental

processes, that there is a relationship among force, mass, and acceleration. Key laws

include,

a) Newton’s Law of Motion; and

b) Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation.

IX. Procedures:

1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:

The teacher / facilitator will open the lesson reviewing prior learning through

summarizing learning contents of the previous unit based on VA SOL PH.2.

2. Direct Instruction:

The teacher will introduce new content on Newton’s Laws starting by introducing Physical Science

Concepts in Action (2016) Chapter 12.1 on Forces.

• The teacher will guide and facilitate the students to engage in discussing, analyzing,

and evaluating contents in Physical Science Concepts in Action (2016) Chapter 12

– Forces and Motion:

12.1 Forces p.362

12.2 Newton's First and Second Laws of Motion p.369

12.3 Newton's Third Law of Motion and Momentum p.377

12.4 Universal Forces p. 382

• Teacher-guided and independent practice of mathematical calculations on

Newton’s Laws.

• Teacher-guided simple experimentations related to Newton’s Laws.

The teacher will guide and facilitate the students in learning and understanding Newton’s Laws

through the instructional video Launchpad: Newton's Laws On-Board the International Space Station

• Reding and studying of Physical Science Concepts in Action (2016) Chapter 12.

• Taking part in open discussions.

• Performing mathematical calculations

• Watching the instructional video Launchpad: Newton's Laws On-Board the

International Space Station (2018).

• Note-taking during class and instructional video.

• Compiling a lesson summary.

Pair work:

Students will work in pairs researching for simple experimentations to understand Newton’s laws.

Collaborative Practice:

Students will work in groups creating a presentation on Newton’s Laws using a presentation software

such as Power Point, Prezi, Keynote etc. Students will analyze, evaluate, and synthesize lesson

contents working in collaboration to create a visual presentation.

Home Work:

Students will work independently creating a concept map using the visual learning tool Inspirations

software ®.

Practice mathematical calculations related to Newton’s Laws.

5. Review / Closure:

The teacher will ask each student to write a summary of the lesson, defining Newton’s Laws.

Teacher will then wrap up the lesson reviewing Newton’s Laws through summarizing the learning

contents.

6. Presentations:

Students will work in groups creating a presentation on Newton’s Laws using a presentation software

such as Power Point, Prezi, Keynote etc. Students will collaborate in analyzing, evaluating, and

synthesizing study material, additional research material, and scenarios for simple experimentation

and real-life application of Newton’s Laws to create a visual presentation. Each member will take part

during the oral presentations to the class.
